I knew you were going to lose it when Kevin sang. It’s such a powerful moment. I am soooo excited for the week of Pentatonix. I get to see them in concert on Thursday so it’s the perfect week for me. My first time ever seeing them live.

The ‘hum’ at the beginning is a nod to the drone sound of bagpipes, which are often used in this song, and it was done by Kirstie and Kevin.
Kirstie leading the Wall of Sound and when you just can't take it anymore they drop Kevin in for the kill shot. Just emotional. The first time I heard this the tears just started when I heard Kevin come in. Maybe it was just because it was in the Covid year of 2020. Should have been nominated for a Grammy.

Kirstin's vibrato when she first comes in, almost sounds like Dolly Parton. It's gorgeous!
This is probably my favorite song for Kevin, Matt, and Mitch. Kevin and his high tenor is amazing. Matts warm baritone. And Mitch with the baritone/tenor, we rarely get to hear him sing lower in his range. Love it!
Jennifer! A great start to a Pentatonix week! Just love some of the chord progressions they throw in which keeps it interesting. And that famous Pentatonix "wall of sound" that hits you late in the song before they let you down easy at the end. 😲 Just beautiful setting too. Can't wait for tomorrow already! I enjoy how the hand claps by Kevin liberally utilize reverb in the studio that emulates the acoustics of the chapel where the video was recorded. The chapel is stone at the bottom and nearly all glass above that creating a very live sound. I’ve attended a wedding in that chapel and recognized the acoustics even though the audio wasn’t recorded there.
The venue is the Wayfarer’s Chapel. It’s located on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Southern California.
Always love to hear your analysis, even though I'm not a singer and much of it goes over my head. But your ability to explain it all just makes me even more impressed with how the singers of Pentatonix use all of these little tricks and methods to give us these gorgeous songs.
And your reaction to Kevin's singing was glorious! Surprised and shocked and pleased, all at the same time!

Just a couple little things I love about this PTX cover, first Kirsten and Kevin holding that note at the beginning that is so reminiscent of bagpipes, and secondly, Mitch's angel wings, visible when they walk into the church. I love how Kirstie and Kevin do the opening verse as the drone pipes on a bagpipe while the others sing the chanter.
Beautiful how their outstanding skill has them constantly flirting with "muddying up" the sound but their control and disciplined arranging never quite allows it to happen.
I believe that here, in the first part of her solo, Kirstin is consciously echoing the technique of country singers like Dolly Parton! Then she breaks open into her more usual Broadway-style belt on "...mine!"
Pentatonix is the group that rekindled my interest in acapella ... before I became a "Home Fry" 🙂... they truly get better every year. Looking forward to the rest of the week, Jen ... thanks for this special treat!
I love your reactions. I don't often hear people talk about Kirstens vibrato. For me, it's reminiscent of Dolly Parton's. Very fast and fluttery. Of course, she uses it at will. If you don"t know Kevin has perfect pitch.

One of my favorites. If you know the history of Amazing Grace, written by John Newton, pairing it with the modern worship song My Chains Are Gone is brilliant. Newton was heavily involved in the Atlantic Slave Trade but found himself calling for God’s mercy in a terrible storm at sea in the mid 1700s. He later became a staunch abolitionist and wrote this classic hymn.
What Pentatonix does here is truly inspired. Your reaction did not disappoint. I was waiting for Kevin at the end. 😉

This is one of the reasons I love that Matt opens the song and Kevin closes it. And that they are standing in front. I don't know if it was on purpose or not, but it's a very powerful image knowing the history of the song.
To be fair, Pentatonix didn’t pair the songs, Chris Tomlin did it years ago for the film Amazing Grace. It’s a beautiful rendition by PTX certainly, but Chris Tomlin was the first to do it.
@@CaptainPikeachu Yes, as someone who listens to Chris Tomlin, I am aware. I wasn't referring to Pentatonix as having paired the two, but the pairing of the two originally/generally.
I love this version of one of my all time favourite hymns. I have to say though Kirstin's solo makes me tear up every time I hear her. I feel she can be overlooked in favour of the drama of Mitch's performances. Awesome reaction/analysis as always. Jenn.

Kirstin's section is what pushed this to the top of my All Time Favorite list (now it's just under The Prayer, but again, Kirstin's section in that is where I started bawling)

Wonderful analysis. Did you note that Kevin started the song in 3/4 time. When Scott began it shifted to 2/4 time. The 3/4 is traditional and Pentatonix typically put its own stamp on the song, and beautifully as usual.
Would love to hear your analysis of Pentatonix' version of "Run to You". Some of the most effective use of dissonance I've ever heard. At 73 I've heard a lot of dissonance, some intentional and some not, but I believe you will really enjoy this one.
Kirstie is known for her fast vibrato. It's also in "The Prayer". :-)

I LOVE this from them for 1 specific reason...because we get Matt Scott and Mitch together. We don't get that often.
Kirsten sounds a bit like Dolly Parton at the first. Her voice is so strong and she shows it in the chorus.

I don’t care what the notes are.The important part is the singing,harmonization and how they make their choice of songs their own.
The extended note at the beginning was intended to imitate a bagpipe.

The intro always makes me think of bagpipes with the "ooh's" being the drone note and Scott and Mitch adding the harmony layers that you would get in a pipe and drum.corp.
I love that she is checking notes on Kirsten's part. Right before the human drum machine SINGS and shows his singing voice is as high as Mitch.
Yes Jennifer. All three of the beatboxers (Adam, Layne and Kev) can sing. Kev is a Tenor and the other 2 are Baris.

I love the fact that they used Chris Tomlin’s version of the song that he did for the film Amazing Grace, which is about the creation of the song and the abolition of slavery in Britain, Tomlin’s version is my favorite version of hymn and it’s so cool to have PTX cover it in their own unique way.
An absolutely fantastic song (enhanced by Chris Tomlin and Louie Giglio - My Chains Are Gone) performed by a fantastic group (PTX - always so tight with harmonies and phenominal delivery) which was brilliantly analyzed by a fantastic reactor (that would be Jen 😁)... I thought you needed to have at least 200 comments on this reaction. Your observations are excellent. I find them very entertaining and instructive. I’ve been a huge fan of PTX since 2011. I saw their first televised performance on The Sing Off. Watched them get dumped by a record label and build their careers with determination and talent. I’ve heard hundreds of their songs and have never tired of them. I love their version of this song because everyone gets to sing a section that shows some different ranges in their voices. Thank you for showcasing them. ❤

Amazing Grace played on bagpipes is VERY popular here in the US. The droning sound sung by Kirstin and Kevin here is meant to mimic the sound of the bagpipes.
Hopefully, your play list include Leonard Cohens 'Hallelujah' which PTX did early, just so you can hear/connect to how developed Kirstens vibrato is so much better , with Amazing Grace. She shows more strength, control and breathe control with Amazing Grace than I would have thought possible, it just shows so well how her voice is compared to early on

The additional lyrics were written by Chris Tomlin, a world renowned Christian singer/songwriter.
When you said "That whole section, my goodness me!" at the beginning, I knew exactly which section you were talking about. 😁 I have watched this video about 30 or 40 times, and I have tried to get through that section without getting the chills....and I have failed every single time. Simply stunning. Everything about this video is perfect.
The background sound in the first verse by Kirstin and Kevin is meant to replicate the drone from bagpipes that very often is used with this song

I've never understood why Kirstie takes so many breaths in her solo part. Surely she could have easily done each phrase without the breath in the middle? It jars to my ear every time....
On the first part if Kirsten's solo I almost feel that she us using a little Dolly Parton in her delivery. Jennifer I think felt that this didn't seem like her usual type of singning.

Kevin was a best kept secret for a while, but word is that Avi helped him find the strength and confidence in his natural tenor voice back when they were roommates. Kirstie has a very fast, tight vibrato. I think it's particularly noticeable in 'Sound of silence'. I think this is one of the best examples of the PTX 'Wall of sound'. Kevin can sing very high - Mitch says even higher than him! To truly have your mind blow listen to Matt sing I think a G#5 (and he's their bass!) at the end of the live Evergreen tour version of Joyful Joyful!
Oh now I hope she reacts to Joyful Joyful when she does their christmas stuff!

I suggest Anne Murray's Song For The Mira. Celtic Thunder has a different arrangement for a group rather than a solo.

Search for the pro level videos people have up from their live Hollywood Bowl show. Zero editing OR studio sweetening, so you can REALLY be impressed with them. It's all impressive, but you'll particularly like "My Heart With You".
I highly recommend Home Free's what Christmas means to me video from last year. They are awesome as always and the video is hilarious.

I'm a *bit* obsessed with watching PTX reactions. I've seen this one in particular more times than I can count. Several times you spoke about articulation/pronunciation/enunciation (definitely not an English teacher here, I'm not sure of the difference between those things). Something I noticed that I've never heard anyone mention is the way the different artists sing "ransomed me", specifically with "ed" of ransom(ed). I hear it very lightly with Scott, I clearly hear the "d" with Mitch, and Kirstie it sounds like she's combining ransom/me. Each way sounds great, it's just something that I noticed.
