I have loved Danny Elfman since the mid 80's.Oingo Boingo is one of my favorite bands. I love everything about him. When you get two golden people like Burton and Elfman together, magic happens.
This song was one of my alltime favorite cinematic moments. The first time I saw this was a significant moment in my cinematic experience, a true work of art. It wasn't until ten years later that I TRULY appreciated this even more.
I love, love LOVE this song. It's so cute! and so random. The part when he's looking at the elf sleeping and is all calm and peaceful and then when he randomly jumps up and shouts, "What's this!?" is like my favorite part. =]
I love the way, how he says "What's this? I can't believe my eyes, I must be dreaming, wake up, Jack, this is a fare!" xD This is so cool in english, the german version isn't so good =(
Thanks for putting the video up, I'm sure you've made a lot of peoples lives better! This is one of his best, and he definetly one the only voices that can do a song of this variety. Go Danny Elfman! But anywho, Timmy had quite a genious idea in his skull, and he decided to make his movie about a SKELETON who's king of PUMPKINS and he has a girlfriend that a friend of his made.. nice job Jack, he's awesome1 Apparently you can blink without eye-lids and you can defy gravity! Epic win to jack! XD!
Danny Elfman's soundtracks are always neat, and so are Tim Burton's old school style animations. they should really make a second nightmare before christmas
I always wondered how he could miss the existence of Christmas when we know from his earlier songs that he visits our world to scare people. These days you see Christmas decorations out by October 20th anyway, sadly. THAT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL.
It's spelled "queer," and yes he says it because the word queer only means "strange" and never originally had anything to do with being gay, if that's the juvenile reason you're pointing it out :p
I love this movie, and this was always my favorite part in the movie. I love how he'll be doing one thing, see another, interrupt himself by saying, "What's this?" Awesome job!
Last time I watched this was when I was a kid. I just remember it being scary, lol. But I seriously need to rewatch it again. It actually looks amazing
It's mostly about a town called Halloween Town in which everyone looks forward to- and makes plans for next halloween. In this town, a skeleton named Jack (the pumpkin King) feels like something is missing. He's getting tired of the same thing every year, so he wanders off and accidentally ends up in Christmas town. He tries to bring the feeling he gets from that town (warmth, happiness) back to halloween town, but when the two holidays mix, things don't go the way he had planned.
God i love this song, its so happy and upbeat. And is it just me, or is Jacks design amazing? Its so simple yet when they animate him, it just looks so brilliant, his emotions are expressed perfectly, and his body movements are so fluent and precise, truly the best animation film in terms of quality, imagery and story in my opinion, a perfect example of how animation should be done. ^^
I beg to differ, itsMyBlackParade. What's This? was written by the musical genius, Danny Elfman, as well as composed by. Pete Wentz worships The Nightmare Before Christmas, as well as I do, and knows himself that his piece is no match for the original song, the very song that you just put down. The songs in The Nightmare Before Christmas are as important to blood to an animal, and they have powered the film. Unfortunately for some who seem to be too inept, they can't understand.
This is a puppet movie by Tim Burton.. About christmas and love.. I hate that some people use Jack Skellington as a ikon. To for example clothes.. And Jack Skellington is NOT a goth/emo ikon!!! This is a wonderful movie, I have seen it 2993 times, and I never getting tired of it!
Whoa! I just realized Jack is a Vampire! Pause the video at 3:14 or watch it from about 3:13 to 3:16 - you'll see the shadow of the choo-choo engine is cast on the snowy mountain behind him, but there's no shadow of Jack himself on top of it.
Jack is a SCORPIO with a LEO MOON--I'm CONVINCED! :D (Disney astrology mugs identified him as a Scorpio.) Scorpio gives him his deep intensity, passion, his determination to discover, while Leo as his Moon (feelings) makes him childlike, upbeat, energetic with charm...plus it gives him that crazy desire to be the Star/ultimate KING even if that means usurping Santa Claus! Notice how he never realizes the effect of what he's done, due to his unbridled enthusiasm (Leo!) Hehe...Agreed anyone?!
Haha actually to add to my last comment, at 2:33 it reminds me of a robber breaking into a house or something. Another thing that i found rather amusing is when he's singing listen and watch how he keeps saying "what's this??", escpecially at about 1:46 when he jumps out of the snowman, it reminds me soo much of a little kid asking sooo many questions and not giving enough time for an answer hehe. Just a few "haha's" I wanted to add =P
Unlike a lot of musicals, this Danny Elfman truly made you believe that Jack was truly overwhelmed by Christmas. He didn't just list all the wonderful things about he, portrayed it as a constant discovery of all these wonderful things, and by the end of the film you can hear the incredible enthusiasm in his voice. Mr. Elfman is a genius, and as his singing proves, is very passionate about his work.
True, it is rather linear, but the feeling, just like you said. Similar with Halloween, magic. Not the same kind, but def. magic. I love dressing up for Halloween and yes, I'd agree, it is a lot about self (for most). Personally, I like putting on a good display for the lil trick-or-treaters :D Just like I like XMas time for the gift-giving. I'm a giver XD
FOB isn't the shittiest band. They aren't all that great... or good... or even mediocre, but certainly not the worst. I'd rather listen to them than, say, Soldier Boy. (or whatever gay misspelling he used to try and be "cool" but only came out looking like an elementary-school drop out)
no it is actually "dolls" They have like 30 dolls and they just move the metal "skeletons"(no pun intended) to move the characters in slowmotion. That is also the reason why most of the characters are overly obese or incredibly thin because it is easier to animate.
I know how you feel, well kinda coz Im 14 myself. But all of the emos and stuff wear clothes to do with this film and act as if they know it when they haven't even seen it. I've seen the film loads of times from when I was little but most other people haven't even seen it... ¬_¬
Are you serious, Mendieee, or was that a joke? If you are serious, then that is Jack Skellington (sorry if I misspelled that), a skeleton who is the main character of the early 90's family/musical/off-beat Tim Burton film "The Nightmare Before Christmas." An amazing movie, by the way.
Nope. It's snowing. Visibility = Zero unless you have a dog named that with a severe cold. And you don't have eyes. And break into a spontaneous song and dance routine. Because I seriously doubt he planned this. That would be ridiculous. ...Right?
I love this song!! so fun! Note that the poor little elf child at 2:50. That was one of the funniest parts of this song, Jack singing RITE in his ear, then Jack screams "WHAT'S THIS?!" And the little elf panics rite after! XD lurved that!
Same! Halloween has always been a very close second, not because of candy, but the air of magic in the night. Christmas is so unlike any other, though. Even as an adult, I still have problems sleeping the night before :D The magic never dies :D
fall out boy, flyleaf, allamerican rejects all killed the songs they performed on the nightmare revisited. the people who did the songs best were korn and marilyn manson. but none of them compare to the originals.
"TNBC" was shot in stop-motion animation in parody to the Rankin/Bass holiday specials. With a voice like that, Danny Elfman ought to play the Phantom in "The Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway one of these days.
Now I wanna be tall like jack now xD But I gotta emit, He's a tall cutie. And people who say he's emo, I think I know why he wears those clothes, Its because in halloween town its spooky. So dont CALL HIM emo
Inside........ WHATS THIS! Makes me laugh a little every time, Slender is stupid, jack is the scariest son of a bitch ever, but yet... other kids had superhero toys, i wanted jack toys, hes just amazing.
In a early script he was in the forest & saw a light in darkness it was the back of pumpkin door. he went threw pumpkin door to the holiday forest & saw the xmas door. Zero was traped behind pumpkin door.
Man, Jack is one of those characters the women love for reasons I cannot comprehend. He's right up there with Sephiroth and Pyramid Head (seriously, there's alot of women who want to jump PH's junk)
I heard that people are trying to adapt the movie into a broadway musical. If they do then I wonder how they'll pull off the skeleton part lol -_-. Though if they do make it, I'm so auditioning for Sally.
hahahahahahah at 2:35 when he slides thru the window I crack up everytime! I luv how his legs stretch up. great video...we're playing this song in band for our halloween concert.
i dont knw how you dare put a video of probably the best animation film/musical ever with the title something to do with the shitest band ever !!! but this song rules
i like that he doesnt go in at first. im alwayls like "i wouldnt go in because its obviusly a plot twist... i wonder what will happen if i dont?"and the i get froced in lol
Gosh, I can't wait to hear Flyleaf sing this! (Though, I kind of wish they were doing "Sally's Song." But, I guess it's okay because Amy Lee is singing it instead.)
they wouldn't be prequels. this was the first time jack happened upon the doors. i also dont think any of the other doors would have made for a good story.
In french, the song became " Que vois-je"( means : What am I seeing?) instead of "What's this".. I actually love the french one as much as the original one =)
Just different versions. I wouldnt say they are as good as the originals, but its nice to have them to have a change. Most seem to like Fall Out Boy's version.
Tonight I'm goin to a Halloween dance with my gf, I'm Jack and She's Sally... this is my 2nd fave song from this movie... most favorite was This Is Hallowwen
this movie just is the best i love it the music is also awesome!! i also like the fall out boy version of this! but this is one of my favorite movies ever!
Jeebus people, calm down! It's obviously an accident. The person who pu this video obviously meant to put something else up, or mislabeled it. Cool it! :P
I know, it's so wonderful!
It sounds like a voice that belongs to someone you'd want to hug.
This movie is absolutely brilliant
I saw this in 3D. It was awesome. This is probably my favorite song hah.
Jack : "I cant believe my eyes~"
Me: ..... :D YAY SINGING

I have loved Danny Elfman since the mid 80's.Oingo Boingo is one of my favorite bands. I love everything about him. When you get two golden people like Burton and Elfman together, magic happens.
Every time I see something I'm fascinated by, this song completely takes over me!
This song was one of my alltime favorite cinematic moments. The first time I saw this was a significant moment in my cinematic experience, a true work of art. It wasn't until ten years later that I TRULY appreciated this even more.

Danny Elfman really did a great job singing this song.
this song plays when ever some one is at my apartment's door bell

I love this movie! Never gets old, and Jack's face is so cute
tim burton and danny elfman working together is always awesome!
love this song and the movie!
I love, love LOVE this song. It's so cute! and so random. The part when he's looking at the elf sleeping and is all calm and peaceful and then when he randomly jumps up and shouts, "What's this!?" is like my favorite part. =]
My favourite movie!! It's so damn great!! I love the last scene when Jack and Sally are kissing; it's so romantic. Beautifull. ;)
I love the 'monsters are all missing' bridge! Tim Burton is a genius! And Danny Elfman has an amazing voice! LOVE THIS FILM!!!
Dat Krunkidle tho
I love the way, how he says "What's this? I can't believe my eyes, I must be dreaming, wake up, Jack, this is a fare!" xD
This is so cool in english, the german version isn't so good =(
I love Jack as a snowman! He looks so funny. One of the best characters in film history.
Thanks for putting the video up, I'm sure you've made a lot of peoples lives better! This is one of his best, and he definetly one the only voices that can do a song of this variety. Go Danny Elfman! Epic win to jack! XD!
Nightmare Before Christmas is a fantastic film, I love it to bits! and "What's This?" is probably my favoutire song from the enitre film.
My favorite film since I was little...I love Tim Burton and Danny Elf man. Jack Skellington 3 Memorized all the songs by heart.
Brilliant!! I absolutely love this song and I find it hilarious. The fob one sucks.
There´s children throwing snowballs instead of throwing heads!
Hehe awesome.
"I cant believe my eyes~ wait. I don't have any eyes! SKULL JOKE! YOHOHOHOHOHOO!"
This movie will never get old in my eyes.
I love this movie!
All the songs are so brilliant!!
Danny Elfman's soundtracks are always neat, and so are Tim Burton's old school style animations. they should really make a second nightmare before christmas
Wait...do you mean theres no DVD of this?
I love this movie!

All the time i watch this movie i think how long it must have took to stop, move the model, take a shot then move the model again!!
''The smell of cakes and pies are absolutely everywhere!'' How would he know what they smelled like without a nose
I love this movie, and this was always my favorite part in the movie. I love how he'll be doing one thing, see another, interrupt himself by saying, "What's this?"
Awesome job!
"...and pies are absolutley everywheeerrrrre"
this song is so awesome

I'm pretty sure the editor was Stan Webb.
He Sounds Like Martin Short The Duo Of Steve Martin.
Okay so I love Nightmare before christmas and all... but I was kind of expecting some FALL OUT BOY, considering they're in the TITLE. =/
fallout boy covered this this is the original from the movie =] but awesome having an opinion im a shut up i talk randomly for no reason xD
Jack is a SCORPIO with a LEO MOON--I'm CONVINCED! :D (Disney astrology mugs identified him as a Scorpio.) Fall Out Boy wrote a song, Danny Elfman acted the part.
While I like the FOB version, it's like comparing apples and oranges.
FOB isn't the shittiest band. They aren't all that great... or good... or even mediocre, but certainly not the worst. I'd rather listen to them than, say, Soldier Boy. (or whatever gay misspelling he used to try and be "cool" but only came out looking like an elementary-school drop out)

5stars!!
I think it might be Almer fud you know the wee guy who chases Bugs Bunny well thats what it sounds like anyway :)

You know what guys?! Everyone makes mistakes so who cAres?! This song is awesome both ways and I'm glad they put it on RUclips! So thanks dude :D
this is the best part in the whole movie. my best part is when he sticks the light bulbs in his eyes and when he falls in the snow. hahaha ^w^
LOL ur right. And, every time I see jack run into the pole and sing "what's this" I'll say,"It hurts!" Dumb, yes, but that part just cracks me up!
Halloween usually isn't a time when you see misltoe hanging. Jack has only known Halloween so everythin of christmas is new or diffrent to him
@TWind he is from holloween town with dark colours and darkness not snow and christmas he thinks he is halusinating or he thiks he is
lol i heard all the Languages for what's this. Japenese was ok...he sounded kinda cute, German kinda funny
and italian was pretty good
omfg jack is add! loloolololololool!
whats this? it makes me feel good... absoloutly no one is dead, i feel warm... oooo whats this!
Ps. I still remember how oooooh and aaah this scene was as a kid, when he falls in..LOL..epic! LONG LIVE TIM BURTON (and Elfman!)
Something that always bugged me was how he says "What's this?" about the white stuff everywhere, yet he knows what snowballs are.
This is nice and all, but where is the REAL CREDIT goes to, DANNY ELFMAN! add him to the credit, after all, he did wrote the song.
I haven't looked up anything Nightmare Before Christmas related in a long time, I love seeing people still listening to this. ^ ^
There are children throwing snowballs here
instead of throwing heads
They're busy building toys
And absolutely no one's dead
xDD Haha I wasn't looking where I was going and I ran into a pole just like jack did this mornig. My head still hurts. Lol!!
Who said they remade it? Nightmare Revisited was a soundtrack, the videos on here are the originals synced to the new tracks.
''there;s children throwing snowballs instead of throwing heads''
1. LoL
2. How did he know it's snow, let laone snowballs?
What's This ??? Oh!!! This is Christmas!!! So...Merry Christmas....to everyone !!! ;)
