It's also not the full truth. Yes you were assigned places to go, but you were assigned a handful of options based on where the union you were at part of owned property/dachas in. Vacations, healthcare, insurance etc were all handled by your union and whatever industry you worked in and varied heavily.
It's incredibly annoying how people distort facts like this and try to paint some disturbing history when in reality it's quite mundane.

In the USSR (and the rest of the eastern bloc) especially in the 80s when industry had greatly deteriorated already, people spent a lot of time just sitting around, wating for parts or for resources or whatnot. In east germany you had a whole genre of jokes about how low actual work was and how people basically spent a lot of time getting drunk and fooling around at work, just because the infrastructure and logistics of industry were beginning to really break down by that point.
However, compared with the modern hellscape of Amazon warehouse jobs and productivity measurement tools in shitty call agent jobs, the hyper-density of nowadays work, all of that actually sounds really nice.

Imagine if americans got a ticket that would allow them to travel on vacation twice per year. It would be interesting to run the numbers on how many vacations this would result in, as opposed to the number of vacations americans actually take, per year, today. Seems like the "oppressed" soviet proletariat might have had more vacation time then the average american worker. Keep in mind, these vacation tickets probably included the cost of the vacation, due to the collective nature of their economy, of course, contrasted by the fact that the vacation had to happen within the confines of the Soviet Union or its allied nations. Still makes you wonder...

In most 20,000+ person Canadian cities, you’ll have at least one French immersion grade school and a Francophone program in high school with all your school being taught en français. In my school in BC, we have a French language class from 4th grade to 10th, 11th, 12th grade and it becomes more intermediate with each consecutive grade. Some people who are passionate about learning the French language will become relatively fluent speakers by their 12th grade. In Canada, the French language is an important part of our school curriculum and is mandatory to learn until 10th grade (16 years old), which I think is great. I wish it was also mandatory to learn our regional Indigenous languages in school, but that seems to be ignored and Canada spent hundreds of years genociding our Indigenous peoples and beating their languages out of them to assimilate into the Christian-white society.

To be fair about the enslaved germans part, my girlfriends grandparents and great grandparents were put into soviet prison camps and had to do forced labour because they were wolga germans, they were then deported to Kazahkstan after the war. They stayed to themselves for the most part and inter-marriage was not that common, which was also due to how vast Russia is and how little people traveled back then. So their families had been in Russia for well over 200 years when they were put into these camps.
So yes, they were very much Russian citizens.
There are other cases like "Danube-Swabians" that settled in the Balkans in the 1600s under invitation of the Hungarian crown, Tito murdered tens of thousands of these people in 1944 as collective punishment, despite a lot of them not speaking german or not identifying as germans at all. One of my neighbours was a little girl back then and all her brothers and her father were just executed, her mother raped and beaten to death and she was put into a camp and later rescued by a convent and raised in a monastery in yugoslawia and then brought to germany by some people from her town that managed to escape and then adopted.
A lot of awful shit happened to a lot of people on all sides, the Nazis got what they deserved, no question but some people like to pretend that the allies washed their hands in innocence or that all of it was justified.

Soviets graped females between age 5-80, killed/send to Gulags/deported everybody who was inconvenient, stole what could be stolen and destroyed many things that could help in rebuilding the country. The cultural genocide as is widely described is a myth. Consider that it was Stalin, a Georgian himself and consider when he turned reactionary and turned on the Georgians.
This is just ignorance of history. I am not defending the actions but they were not out of context.
Stalin as a Georgian himself was an avid defender of cultural expression in his early years, which until the end of the Soviet Union was extremely widespread. Traditional Clothing, Dance and customs were still till the end not only accepted but supported. From the Moldovan SSR to the Bashkirs and Tartars and of course the Georgians. In Transnistria till this day traditional customs are celebrated. The point where the guy in the video couldn't describe and his grandparents can't either why it was a cultural genocide shows it. It was all about language and that was not out of context either. After years of support for local republic languages Stalin grew himself a problem. Out of those cultural groups spawned reactionary nationalist and capitalist groups that used the language to agitate against the soviet union. After "being betrayed by his own people" Stalin went overboard and reversed his previous support into repression. History is complicated.
On another note Hasan, according to your definition of freedom of speech, Germany is exactly the same as China, to the letter exactly the same.

Hasan, you need to take your dog for longer walks. Often times dogs experience a lot of tension and different forms of anxiety. So they are often too tense to relax on a walk especially when the routine is normally a short walk or period of time in which they normally get access to the outdoors to do their business. If you take them for a second lap, or on a different route to the park or something, they will relax and often this encourages more complete movements. Just trust she's not just manipulating you, she really needs you to pay attention to her needs more closely. Dogs are very subtle and strong willed so they often don't show discomfort. Usually those feelings are manifest into attention seeking behavior.

Also, there’s still a pay gap between unilingual Francophones and Anglophones, so there’s even more incentive to be able to speak English

The question posed at 16:15 answers the true question of what's wrong with the world today? Simply put. The "Rich" just do not feel that they are rich enough. And the quest for their fulfillment is paid by our labor. Which raises the question. Should everyone get to determine their own wealth? Using the literal life of others to achieve their fulfillment without any regulation. In that case I feel the minimum wage should be cost of living in one's county per yr times two. That way the economy doesn't starve. Let the soon to be not billionaires figure out how to pay our taxes since everyone will fit into the new tax bracket of able to dodge taxes like all the corporations. Even the playing field for all and see how much progress will be made if we stop letting Companies control all the power and money.

28:24 Hasan’s take on ppl material conditions in ussr are a bit off. Housing was horrible. Ie. a family of 4 would live in a room of multi rooom apartment and other rooms would be taken by other families. So you would have 4 bedroom apartamemt with 20 ppl living in it. Is it better than homeless - yes. But it was bad. Everything was cheap yes, but you could barely buy anything. Clothes, books etc you would have to wait in 3 hr line to buy it. And no you wouldnt be able to choose what to buy or when. The way it worked it was that once a month you would walk by the shoe store, realize they are selling winter boots (one style avaible) and you would line up with hundred of other people to buy it. To get a good job or buy certain items you had to pay bribe, rub shoulders and had connections. Those were the materials conditions that were good. I was born in ussr and never dreamt to go back.

@@mybirdsofparadise I've studied Soviet history quite extensively and talked to and read interviews/books by people who lived there during most eras. Just because you lived in a country doesn't automatically mean you have a good handle on the history. Most Americans don't have a fckin clue about a lot of their history

There is an event bigger death toll of capitalism from all the borderline slave work conditions, artificial food scarcity, imperialist bombings and war pushed by weapons manufacturers.
