Police Officer Shows You How To Ride A Bike SAFELY - Part 2: Open Road Riding

- Опубликовано: 12 май 2022
- The second part of the Bikesafe course series covering riding out on the open road as I give a full commentary, explaining road positions, observations, filtering tactics and more. Devitt Insurance asked if I'd like to do a Bikesafe course with the Met police, and being a police trained biker and driver I thought it would not only be a good refresher for me, but also an opportunity to explain why 'we' do what we do when riding to the police motorcycle training system of Roadcraft.
In part 1 we started at the Bikeshed in central London and rode out of town through heavy traffic, so make sure you check that episode out here • Ex-Police Rider Explai...

Your forward planning is on the money Bruce. I've driven HGV's as well as cars & motorbikes. I can't emphasise how important it is to look as far ahead as possible whilst highlighting hazards to yourself. Top content Bruce 👌
The Smith Driving System ... Rule no. 1 for forward planning ... but all 5 rules are spot on.
I did my std and adv car and bike courses in the job starting in 1985, followed by TPAC, security escort etc. was full time on bikes for several years and after retiring did training and assessments for recruiting riders for Blood bikes. However, I have not had a bike for about 5 years due to focussing on Motorhome touring but I am now looking to return to biking. Despite all my trying and experience I accept my skills will have diminished, so I am starting by watching RUclips videos and found your part 1 and 2 on bike safe a great refresher. It reminded me of the satisfaction of doing all that commentary both in my head or out loud inside my helmet and even debriefing myself on where I went wrong. (We all cock up). I will be doing a bike safe myself when I pick up a new bike, we are never too old to learn
8:51
I’ve always thought that the bottom sign meant “fun section up ahead”.
As a new rider I can't tell you how beneficial content like this is, absolutely superb Bruce. Did the raiseyourride version of this with Avon and Somerset the other week and it was an excellent day out and I'd recommend it to anyone.
Nice one Paul 👍
Top notch video, refresher for those of us that have been biking for decades and all that we do instinctively that younger, less experienced riders might not know. Having been a Chief Instructor for Canada Safety Councils motorcycle courses, lane positioning, always having an "exit strategy" and defensive riding can never be over streesed. Thanks for the excellent job
Been riding for 5 years and picked up so many bad habits. Back to training, appreciated the video.
The old adage, slow in fast out, fast in sh*t out. Great commentary.
I am lucky enough to be in the middle of an IAM course. Your videos are a great demonstration of what can be expected on such a course, with your unique style of commentary! All training is valuable, with the accent on the Safety Bubble. Staying Safe and Having Fun! Cheers.
I’ve been driving since 1997 and riding since 2018. I thought I knew what I was doing on the roads till I watched this video. I’m already a slow careful rider, but this has shown me what I’m missing! Thank you 👍🏻👍🏻
I loved the bikesafe course. even the "theory" lesson at the start. The one issue I had, was I was only told what I wasn't do right (which is great), but it didn't necessarily tell me how to fix it.
I actually did not know about the top to bottom on road signs. You learn something every day, thanks 👍
Being retired met response biker like you it was great seeing you take on the Bikesafe course. I did it years ago before I went onto complete the met response solo course myself and found it a great pre curser.
Watching you do it again was such a good reminder of the little bits that keep us safe. Remembering I don’t need to ride everywhere at response mode helps.
The Hendon shuffle, I still do it.
Remember,
Slow in, fast out of the bends was great.
Position for vision and always sacrifice position for safety.
Brill. Thanks for this great vid Bruce I really enjoyed it!
I am not a biker rider but l have done the motoring advanced course in the 80's ina van . It was good to see it from a bikers vision and commentary. An added bonus was the dulcet tones of a fellow Scotsman. I used to drive an impact lorry in road traffic management in London, it was interesting to see the reactions of motorists and bikers when l lowered the impact cushion, they would do anything to get past me.
So good this could seriously be a training video. Why, because you bring it to life with explanations, humour and your wealth of experience. Most training can be very dry but this is not
Thanks bud 👍
Sorry.. totally disagree.. Bad example for a training video .. what training video would show someone overtaking vehicles on an a 'A' road in excess of 70 mph on several occasions and exceeding other speed limits throughout the video. ... a traing course would tell you to be observant at all times and if you observed his speedo at all, you would realise that's it's certainly not suitable as a training video
@@teapotone bro , I’m in Scotland do you have any numbers mate for a course up here or anyone in chat ,going bck on road after leg break ,long story but it’s been three year ,want that confidence bck , cheers
@@Malcolmmtts bro from what I mind that’s why bikes have that power to get past a pest ,A road bit iffy but it was cool with the plod guy .it also says riding on an open road .
No sorry bud I don’t have any connections up there - drop Rapid training a line as they have people all around the country.
I know their courses are expensive, but they may be able to put you in touch with someone suitable 👍
The look on Lamb Chops face when he thought you were being bollocked, priceless!! Big thing I take from both of your videos and Lamb Chops is being aware overtaking when there are options on the right in particular. Great stuff thanx.
Cheers Simon, aye riding this way you really do start to notice so much more whilst you’re riding - it does slow you down in many situations, but it also allows you to go quicker in others, and be smoother overall 👍
Brilliant vid Bruce, I see too many bikers who don't use proper positioning and put themselves at a risk, not giving other road users a chance to see them. Life is too short, don't be in a hurry to end it. Being an ambulance tech and and a fellow biker, I just wonder when I will be picking that rider up off the road at times. Be safe!!
This was really good. I'm a fairly new rider and my friend and former instructor is ex Kent Police traffic. He's taught me to ride just like this. Good work 👏!
It shows what can be achieved when the police do something useful instead of there usual fixation with speeding 👍
Your commentary shows how much you there is to be aware of when you’re out riding .
Well done Bruce. You showed that the system of motorcycle control, is very much still within you and used in your riding to the effect it does give to riding. From your own history and training and old profession of; Police rider/driver, it is still serving you in your riding in your "profession" as a motorcycle vlogger, of which I think is at a high standard and sets example to others to follow, that if they were to also commit to some good training, with a professional rider trainer, they to could change their own ride so much for the better and safer. Watching you here shows, that it isn't boring, "old pipe and slippers brigade riding" as was so often thought in the past, but that it is the way to take one's own riding. You have just shown that and expressed it so well to your "subscribers", which I am one, it is so worth it to do these training/assessment opportunities. Well done mate and I hope many more see it and take it up themselves, leaving their egos at home. You've reached a lot of people who watch and listen to your advice on your channel, about bikes and riding and the fun to be had, but safely, as much as we did if not more! on the old Essex Police BikeSafe and currently on the Essex FireBike Better Biking course. Bless ya matey, enjoy once again well done on a great video Bruce.
I enjoyed those two videos. I gave my RT back 7 years ago but I enjoyed it while it lasted, and the ride out with the police was enlightening to say the least. Keep up the good work 🌞
One of the best commentaries I have heard/seen. I like to watch these to avoid complacency, as a returning rider who only got back onto motorbikes in 2019. Really clear, well explained (your thinking), so thanks. Great job.
Cheers Kevin 👏👍
That white truck at 17:20 startled me and I'm just sitting in front of a computer.
Excellent Bruce, just as Part 1 was excellent too. Almost feel like I've done the course now, your running commentary was brilliant. Thanks
Beautifully done Bruce. Good revision from my own Bike Safe course recently. I’ve seen so many mates put themselves under self induced pressure to put the overtake on to keep up with their pals. Better to try and resist the temptation if it’s not safe. Rather be cautious and a minute late than anything worse 👍🏻
Great video
Highly recommend every rider to do this course. Everyone should gain something.
Automatic Traffic Signal?…. Aside from the travel videos these are some of my favourites of yours. Nice work all round.
Having learnt to ride I still tend to use motor compression to slow down. It is a good reminder to use the brakes to communicate slowing down or stopping. Thanks for this as, even though I live in Aussie, it is equally applicable to our situation.
These full comentary videos are very educational and gives us an insight into the thoughts and workings of a very experienced rider. Thank you.
Cheers Lee 👍
Could learn so much from following this guy for a morning.
Did my Bikesafe yesterday and this was excellent reinforcement of what I'd practiced on my ride. Great stuff thanks 👍
Love this style of video, detailing what you're doing and observing definitely challenges me to improve and apply these skills. Looking forward to doing these courses and your next video
Lovely commentary. I've done MAC and IAM - but watching someone else apply the method is really positive and affirming. It also helps me pick up my "new" bad habits.
Clear to see you still have all the skills and knowledge from your days in the job. Great video thanks.
Priceless that. Thank you 👍
Superb video. As a former rider in the early eighties who is getting back in to riding bikes, I find these videos to be really useful.
Another great video Mr T , thank you
Spot on! Really useful Bruce, thanks.
Excellent display of what one has to do in making decisions about road conditions and planning one's position on the road. Thanks again. I'm off to practice.
This is brilliant, exactly what I was taught and it still makes my head hurt when I do it. You've got a future as an instructor!!
Ha Ha, God help other road users!!!!
Cheers Steve 👍
Brilliant video again mate thanks for sharing 👍
Great video. I really find your thought process to be valuable - explaining why you do something as you do it. I have been riding 50 plus years and your video is still valuable. Thanks.
Awesome video. Was great listening to your commentary.
It's watching you, and listening to the commentary, that you realise, how much you 'don't' see.....
it was like a mini refresher, watching these, and Chopsies.
Well done both, great video Bruce, great course too.
Grumps.
Thanks Grumps, appreciate that 👍
Life saving tips , its been an education , thanks Brucie , stay safe
Fab videos lots of very useful advice. Many thanks. Have subscribed to make sure I see more of these.
Another excellent video with great insight 👍👍👍
Brilliant video with lots of food for thought for me. I have done a bike safe and went on to do my IAM advanced so thought I couldn't do another bike safe! Come the summer I will put in for another one with the MET
Loved the commentary of your ride. Thanks again.
Thanks bud, glad you’ve got some good from the vids 👍
I’ve taken so much on board watching these 2 vids. Also went on the waiting list with my local bikesafe. Thank you.
Enjoyable to watch and listen.
A excellent insight to the thinking rider.
These are vids that I shall be re-watching.. Thanks for posting!
Really enjoyed that Bruce 👏👏👏👏
Top notch vid Bruce … a great reminder of how to ride correctly 👊
Great pair of videos, thank you. Having a lengthy full commentary across a large variety of scenes was great.
I can also vouch for bikesafe being an excellent (and excellent value) course.
Brill vid the transit on the left when you took the lead scared the shit out of me 🤘
Well done - IPSGA shown and described in ‘live’ conditions; invaluable!
Bikesafe is a great resource. Thank you for highlighting it so positively
Brilliant commentary learnt a lot there pal you need to do more like this
Loved it, great talk through cheers.
Thanks Bruce - a great video and a useful reminder. Bikesafe is a great course and from my experience the guys who run them are universally excellent - worth refreshing once in a while.
Superb video Bruce. I did a similar course through Honda about 25 years ago, two days 1:1 with an ex Hendon instructor. The observation and positioning I learned there has stuck with me ever since. Not only did it make me a safer rider, I became more relaxed and confident and started enjoying riding so much more. Watching your video made me realise I could do with sharpening up my riding, so thanks for that. Excellent video, well worth rewatching every year.
Bruce, absolutely love the running commentary, please keep the vids coming, breath of fresh air, no blowing of smoke up any orifice! But you’ve nailed it.
Thanks Dave 👍
Great video Bruce, amazing to hear how much a good rider sees. You have inspired me to have a good ride out this weekend and I've learned what ATS and Options are, every day is a school day. I think the amount of views you had for the last vid speaks volumes.
Excellent work big man, keep them coming 👍👍
Cheers Jay, aye I’ve been blown away by how popular the first vid was! I genuinely didn’t think it would do very well?!
Glad it’s of some use to people 👍
This has been a great series Bruce one of the best examples of advanced riding especially the commentary. I am a member of the IAM, ride a blood bike and so do lots of miles in all weather and must redo training and a test not always IAM but with a recognised organisation every three years. What always surprises me with some bikers is that “if I’m able to ride really fast I’m a good rider” been there myself in my younger days but 40+ years of biking on see it differently now.
Thanks bud, glad you’ve enjoyed them.
Yes absolutely, I totally agree. It used to be all about speed for me, and the faster I went and faster I cornered, the better rider I felt I was.
Now I see some riders on the road and cringe as I know they’re surviving mostly by luck, and eventually that’ll run out.
Don’t get me wrong, there are some incredibly talented riders out there who are comfortable at way higher speeds for situations than I am, but I’m definitely much more reserved in my usage of speed than I used to be, and I’d like to think my vision ahead and risk assessments are higher than average now.
Accidents still happen though and you can never think you know it all.
I’ve recently done a day with ‘Rapid Training’ and I learned loads regarding my vision, positioning, and more.
Every day is a school day 👍😉
Personal choice, I don’t want to personally
Nope, never been an issue for me personally. My headlights and road positioning are a much larger factor in being noticed by other road users.
Personally I only notice high-viz clothing after I’ve already spotted a bike due to their lights. I tend not to sit with traffic on the nationals and would rather get passed and away from potential hazards.
But it’s a personal thing, I do t think anyone should be forced to wear anything in particular on a bike - helmet is a bare minimum and that’s fine by me.
Massive difference between the area of a car and the tiny surface area of a rider, a specially at speed and sat behind your bikes headlight
As I said at the start Terry, if you want to wear hi-viz, go right ahead, but it’s not for me👍
Very important videos! Thank you very much.
I'll be taking a lot of tips from this video and putting it into practice.... cheers Bruce.. 👍👍
Fantastic watch (both parts) Really enjoyed your thought processing and commentary through the ride. Did a Bikesafe myself probably about 10 years ago now with Essex Police. I cannot rate these highly enough, got really useful feedback through the day, improved both my speed (down as well as up) and my observation.
Another great vid. Fascinating commentary.
Years ago I bought the book police road craft, it's well worth a read to see how the pros do it and increase your knowledge
Brilliant commentary Bruce - textbook road craft, very similar to The Advanced Car . Safety being paramount. 👮♀️
Watched part 1 and 2 and this is the first time I've seen you, really great video with riding commentary giving us a great explanation. I honestly will look into a bikesafe course and you have a new subscriber
Thanks very much Ledge, welcome to the channel 👍
Very sensible riding. Thanks for the live comment during the ride. Lessons learned.
This is great &full of useful information, when I get my bike back on the road I'm going book a roadcraft course, well done 👏
Loved these two videos Bruce. Very impressed with your skill level. Thank you.
Cheers Ray 👍
Cracking stuff gents. Interesting to see what we should all be doing all the time, but seldom do.
Absolutely helpful! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and decisions you have to make when riding. It really is a conscious process and that's very helpful when it comes to safety.
My pleasure Jason, glad it’s of some use to you 👍
learned from this, riding for 10 months, knew nothing of positions 1, 2, 3.
Fantastic, Really enjoyed this and has inspired me to get on a refresher
Thankyou
Lovely ride, I'll be carrying on learning then! Good course, Bikesafe. One takeaway from my course relating to paint on the roads you mentioned was "white means shite". Thanks so much for the vid and your commentary was right on the mark.
One of your best videos fella 😊 Brings back so many memories…. Is good for us All to talk ourselves through our ride as it keeps us focused away from the “Wonder what’s for tea 🤔” screech Crash ! …Roadcraft saves lives End of…. Thanks for sharing… 🥃🏴
This is excellent - thank you.
Enjoyed that Thank You. RoadCraft is a good read, but watching that makes even more sense.
Hope you’ll do some more of these if & when possible Fella 😊
This could be a series; so informative and useful. It’s helpful k recognise the roads as well but this is really clear and even though I’ve been riding over 15 years I’ve learnt plenty. Thanks Bruce
My pleasure Chris, glad it was of some use to you 👍
Great video and great to ride along with you ,the road positions and view really come into it when you are 'upping the pace . Then I say to myself ... what if ....
Fantastic set of informative videos Bruce. Highlights a lot of things and plenty to work on . Thanks mate much appreciated
My pleasure Colin
I enjoyed that reminder and the best thing I ever did was the bike safe day down here in Cornwall. I can't recommend it highly enough and it was fun.
I looked into advanced riding courses a few years ago but didnt do anything about it although I did do a bike safe day with the Gloucestershire police and that too gave a good insight to advanced riding. Watching these videos has made me think that I need go get my butt in gear and actually do the ROSPA or IAM training, your commentary and road position was spot on and very helpful
Great vid and very interesting to see you riding on my local roads.👍
Very strange watching you ride roads I know so well. You pass my friends home!! Brilliant video Bruce 📹 quality entertainment and I learned stuff too! 👌
just listening to the commentary that you gave has helped, Ive been riding for 40 years and you still learn stuff I will give the positioning ago for sure. I must admit I would have overtaken a lot earlier but also give it a little more power LOL
Great video, can’t wait to up my game to this level…..sunrise is around 5:00 tomorrow 😜. Also, for all the stick Essex gets, we do have some great roads and picture perfect villages.
Fantastic commentary on your observations Bruce, been on riding since 16 (52 now) great to watch this and learn will definitely apply on next ride, never to old to learn/ refresh your skills.
Thanks Barry
Really Excellent Riding Bruce, your vision and control were at another level
Thanks very much Karl 👍
I did a Bikesafe course (Dorset) and they use 1 to 5 rather than 1 to 3 for road positioning. 1 and 5 are right on the edge, 2 and 4 left or right of centre and 3 in the middle. That to me made sense.
Really enjoyed that!
Very good commenting and things to keep you coming home, the road positioning is something I need to be more active with, especially position one, I tend to be position 2 or 3. Thanks 👍
Great ride.. I appreciate even with your previous experience YOU where putting yourself on the ‘spot’ there and under more pressure than any the other riders.. good bottle., system, system..👍🏴🏍
Thanks Bill, much appreciated bud 👍
Great commentary I got a speeding ticket 33 in a 30 mph in my car several years ago took the speed awareness course rather than the points, good course great information well worth attending 👍,
I really enjoyed your Bikesafe videos, thank you. I’m also a retired Job biker and now I volunteer as a Bikesafe Assessor.
Good ride and commentary 👍🏼
Cheers Chris 👍
That was well worth watching and learn from correct road position. Also thinking well ahead.
Like your style of riding and you do as I do notice all those tell tale signs such as the bins out, child's scooter and such and doing those little things like thanking vehicles you have just filtered by and riding in a staggered formation. I had been riding for 40 years before doing extra training with the IAM Roadsmart group, if nothing else you get the feedback on your riding from many other riders, including ex Police and forces riders. A great video Sir, ride safe.
That was a brilliant part 2 video, I must get myself on some new rider training too. Now to check out Lambchop! Cheers…
Nice one teapot loved that 👍 more please .
