I don't think anyone has said pip pip since the 1920s, when everyone who did say it mysteriously died of monocle-related choking. (That's monocle, not mon oncle.) Although to be honest I have been known to say toodle pip.
I think it helps that this particular admonishment really applies to basic storytelling, too. It's more relevant when reader/player agency is involved through gameplay, of course, but having a locked door that isn't an intentional red herring will distract readers as well.
It's not really. It's just good writing. If you wrote about the main character checking out a locked door and never came back to it in a book, that would be ad writing. Jess is a good writer.
I loved these games as a highschooler. Coming off of Dagger of Amon Ra they were really fun. Message in a Haunted Mansion (I THINK that was the name) was my favorite, though it did include an evil sliding puzzle as well(May all sliding puzzles be soaked in a vat of acid!!!)
I know, right?? Blackmoor manor was my absolute favorite, because I am a total werewolf fan! Some of the other, creepier mysteries were Message in a Haunted Mansion, Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake, Ghost of Thorton Hall, The Haunting of Castle Malloy, The Captive Curse, Danger on Deception Island (for the creepy fog and other scenery along the coast), Legend of the Crystal Skull, and I would argue that the Final Scene and Treasure in the Royal Tower were a bit creepy as well, with Final Scene being in an old, run-down theater, and Royal Tower having a huge, mostly empty castle because the characters are stranded there due to a blizzard.
As a British person as I nearly pissed myself laughing at these voices. Me attempting an American accent sounds more cockney than phone guy. Made up for by the industrial mix of the warrior's death soundbyte! :>
Look, I took the liberty of examining that parrot when I got it home, and I discovered the only reason that it had been sitting on its perch in the first place was that it had been NAILED there.
Shadow at the Water's Edge is indeed surprisingly scary. Message in a Haunted Mansion scared me a bit too, specially in the beginning with those random noises in the halls.
Ah yes. The cover art reminds me of Fatal Frame 5, which has a whole cult of maidens who assist people who come to a certain mountain to commit suicide. And when they receive a vision of crossing to the other side, they are put into boxes alive and sunken into dark water at the apex of the mountain.
The accents in these games are all over the place (A lot of the Japanese accents in Shadow at the Water's Edge are painful), but I place that on the So Bad, It's Good category. The acting itself is well-done and I adore Nancy Drew's voice actress. These game are very well-done and I'm glad you decided to check them out!
her interactive got their start with a point and click adventure game inspired by the vampire diaries book series (if i recall correctly the division of american laser games that became her interactive was originally created for that game) and it's an amazing game, both in the sense that its live action fmv aged hilariously and the fact that it's a genuinely fun and engaging game that's really satisfying to figure out! some of the hallmarks of the nancy drew series, like the first person viewpoint and needing to talk to everyone as much as you can to piece together how to solve some of the puzzles, got their start in the vampire diaries! i can't recommend it enough :)
Lani Minella is in SO many games. She's the female alt-universe version of john stjohn. And they're often in the same games together, too. Eg: Ion Maiden. Fun facts.
I am so so SO happy you're making a video about this! 😍 This particular game scared the sh*t out of me when I was young. I still play 'em! They're so good!
I loved the Nancy Drew games when I was younger. The theme music brings back so many memories! I just found the PushingUpRoses channel today! Thank you for doing this. "Curse of Blackmoor Manor" was one of my favorites.
I grew up playing these. Love them. My sister and I have collected almost all of the games over the years. Message In a Haunted Mansion is my favorite, probably mostly out of nostalgia. Blackmoor Manor is a close second. My favorite thing about the older games was the beautiful poems on woven tapestries that tied in to the game in one way or another, often as hints on what needed to be done, or context. They eventually stopped doing them and it’s always been a sore spot for me. They were beautiful in my opinion.
The second I heard the opening menu music I got nostalgia goosebumps. I'm so happy you're covering these. They were my favorite childhood games.... legitimately difficult and scary! I've never been able to find anything like them again.
Ah, my wife introduced me to these games, and I've played through them all thanks to her. The character models do get a bit better in the later entries, thankfully. My personal favorite is Shadow at the Water's Edge. :)
I remember my sisters and my cousin would get together at a new Nancy Drew release, and we'd all play together since fp /is/ scary, unless you're got someone by your side. We would play senior detective and we each had a job roll. Note taker, puzzle solver, jokester, the daring one, and I was the one who would go in when no one was around after hitting a wall and do the one thing we hadn't tried/too scared to do, to everyone coming back with more snacks and drinks and we'd finish up the games. We played them from the first to Danger by Design, then we were all too grown up to continue, I guess. It was really fun, tho the scariest death scene I remember for us was when we were locked and trapped in a burning down shed, and when we were being chased through a maze. I think my best memory was when I saved us from quitting a game cause I went into someone's bag, when everyone was too scared that they were gonna get yelled at and die somehow from snooping that intensely. These games hold a special place in my heart, and can only ever be played with more than one person behind the monitor.
I like that there are different styles of mysteries throughout the series. Some are more adventure based, some are more like a treasure hunt, and others (like this one) lean towards the scary side of things. Some other good scary games from the series are Ghost of Thorton Hall, Shadow at the Water's Edge, Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake, Haunting of Castle Malloy, and Message in a Haunted Mansion.
Hey, this was my first Nancy Drew game! Recently I've bought them all on Steam and started playing from the beginning, reliving childhood memories and finally reading / hearing them in English (since all of my twenty discs were in Russian). Got stuck on a puzzle in a Ransom of the Seven Ships years ago and didn't proceed with the series further, and now there's more than ten games since that point, yay!
Oh my god, I LOVE THE NANCY DREW GAMES!! They definitely don't get enough coverage!! Please do more! I highly recommend Shadow At The Water's Edge, The Legend of the Crystal Skull, Tomb of the Lost Queen, and my personal favorite Ghost of Thornton Hall. Trust me, they're tons of fun!
Two of my very favorite things coming together, Her Interactive & Pushing Up Roses! Thank you for delving into this series I remember this particular game being a frustrating one for me!
6:51 That's not a warrior, that Aeolus, King of the Winds. I only know these games as an observer, rather than a player, but I'm glad you've found them. I found this game interesting myself, and if you're looking for the scariest games in the series, the next one after this was Shadow At the Water's Edge, which was then dethroned by Ghost of Thornton Hall. And, yes, going immediately for Senior Mode for *any* game in this series is a bad idea. And now, trivia. Loulou is ALSO voiced by Lani Minella. And some of Jane's games, like Bul and Petroglyph Punch, are things from earlier games in the series.
Some bittersweet memories watching Nancy Drew Walkthroughs with my Ex, wrapped in a blanket via Skype calls, so it's been nice revisiting one of them with this review. Lovely video as always, and no, nobody says "Pip pip" over here :D
Ah, the nostalgia. That main menu music brings back so many memories, as does hearing Nancy's voice. Blackmoor Manor was one of my favorites as a wee lad. it'd be remiss of me not to mention Ghost Dogs Of Moon Lake, and The Haunted Carousel, and The Final Scene. Oh, and Danger On Deception Island. You can give Nancy food poisoning in that one!
I discovered these Nancy Drew games through "Mostly Walking" a couple years ago, and they've become one of my favourite guilty pleasures. Playing Blackmoor Manor recently was like discovering a long-lost CD-ROM series from 1993, except from 2004. It gave me all the nostalgic fuzzies and moon logic headaches at the same time and I love it. Also, what do you mean no jump scares? Did you do a run of the game where Ethel wasn't lurking around corners every time you click around the mansion on a puzzle binge? Her Slender Man tactics were scarier than any monster. Anyway, glad to see these on your channel. Hope to see more reviews of ND to come.
AWWW YES. PUR Finally talks about Nancy Drew! "Secrets can kill" was the first game I ever had for my parent's computer and I remember being so terrified of exploring the school just cause of the music and how easily characters got angry at me for being nosy.
I played one of those Nancy Drew games in school, even though they weren’t really educational games, they were just part of a bundled software that came with Carmen Sandiego games!
Sara Cox my teacher said they weren’t educational enough, they had some puzzles to be it suited for an edutainment game, she wouldn’t let us play it as much like the Carmen Sandiego games with learning geography!
When I was in middle and high school my mom and I would play these together. She isn't really into video games but we would spend a whole Saturday on the computer together solving the puzzles and unraveling the mystery. My favorites were Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake and Treasure in the Royal Tower. It's so nostalgic to see this game! :) In my opinion the later games were not as engaging. They had less free exploration than the earlier titles, instead going back to teleporting from location to location rather than allowing you to roam around large environments freely. It took away from the experience a little for me, so I don't play them as much now. But I absolutely loved the earlier games! Thanks for covering this title! :)
I remember playing this game as a kid and having to hide under the desk the computer was on to shield my eyes from how terrifying I thought parts of this game were. I was a scared child to say the least
The original books were published until 2003, but they are still making books starring her to this day, albeit in a spin-off series that is told first person. There are about 2 new books a year. Yes! Would love to see more videos covering the Nancy Drew games!!

15 years ago i was really into the Nancy Drew games. They all follow the same concept and it worked for me. They emphasize characters and story. Getting to know people and helping them out, while observing. Using her friends Bess and George or the Hardy boys as a helpline. And they try to teach you the basics of something like bird calls or writing short hand. And yes, the mini games aren't always great but they add variety to the adventure. And i felt like the developers really tried hard to come up with new ideas every time and not repeat themselves. I will always remember the good times i had with those games.
Please please play more Nancy Drew games. I played so many when I was young. All the sound effects and just through me right back to my 10 year old self. So so great!
I was literally too afraid to go up the stairs in Thornton Hall several times and had to nope out. I haven't played Shadow yet but I can't imagine it's even worse.
Ahhh, I'm so delighted you covered a Nancy Drew! These were such an important part of my childhood and now seeing a favourite youtuber cover one is just such a day brightener. This one is such a classic, and I highly reccommend you do more since there are a bunch of gems out there. Love your content as always and thank you for all your hard work!
Eeeeeeeeeeeee!!! I had this game as a kid! And the carousel one! Me and my sister would play them together, but we could never figure out how to beat them. We were also terrified by them. My sister once got close to the ending of the carousel one, but was suddenly attacked by the antagonist and we were both too scared to go back. The weird 3am ritual in this one really creeped me out. I'm so happy you covered it, I love my nostalgia for these games! I still play some of the newer ones when I can afford it. And I will sign your petition to abolish slide puzzles, they are the bane of my existence.
YES! The Nancy Drew Her Interactive games! These were my jam! I sucked at them so hard but I literally bought every one up to... White Wolf I think, after a friend gave me some early ones. I love you (platonically) for all the Murder, She Wrote stuff but this is like icing on the cake.
My names Nancy. I swear I almost had an accident hearing the creepy red glowing eye call out my name. Especially since I was using this video as background noise. I would have billed you for my dry cleaning XD
oh dang! this game is actually super nostalgic for me; some of my first experiences with video games were with this specific Nancy Drew games, my Mom loved to play them and we'd spend plenty of time going over notes. It was so satisfying getting to the ends of these, I think we only ever finished 3 out of the 10 or so we played!
There is just something insanely charming about seeing you cover these cheesy delightful uncanny valley PC mystery games. Amazing video, and always a huge treat to see you tackle games again. If you're ever interested, there's a Holmes game called Sherlock Holmes: Secret of the Silver Earring that I think you'd get a kick out of. Keep up the fantastic work, Roses!
I'm English, but I live in the US now. Everyone here seems convinced that English people say "chip, chip, cheerio", or, even more bafflingly, "chip, chip, Cheerios".
"The puzzles are a combination of logic, interrogation, inventory and BULLSHIT" ughhh why am I laughing so much ahhshadhaj pushing up roses is literally one of my favorite channels in this site
Thanks for doing a Nancy Drew game, I was obsessed with these as a kid! I think I played up to like game #18 of these and I would play the older ones over and over and over. I think my first experience with really talking to other people online was on the Nancy Drew forums lol! Excellent nostalgia trip :D
Great memories playing this one (and several others) with the girl I used to babysit down the road! Shout out to you Amanda, if you ever see this! Kettle corn and Her Interactive forums all day.
"Pip pip" is still a commonly used expression here in England. It's a reference to the greatest Prime Minister the country ever had, Sir Philip 'Pip' Bin. Pip Bin made his fortune when he invented the bin in the 18th century, until that point you had to carry any rubbish around with you or dump it in the street. Later in life he was accidentally made Prime Minister for a single day, during which he vanquished the French, and has been remembered ever since with the addition of "Pip pip" to the end of sentences.
YOU KNOW WE DON'T SAY PIP PIP! 😡
I mentioned this part JUST FOR YOU.
I don't think anyone has said pip pip since the 1920s, when everyone who did say it mysteriously died of monocle-related choking. (That's monocle, not mon oncle.) Although to be honest I have been known to say toodle pip.
I certainly say cheerio, but I think that pip pip was supposed to be satirical even when PG Wodehouse was writing his books.
@@pushinguproses You successfully trolled me then XD
It's what I do. *smug*
It's odd that Jessica Fletcher had such insight in video game design. 🤔
I think it helps that this particular admonishment really applies to basic storytelling, too. It's more relevant when reader/player agency is involved through gameplay, of course, but having a locked door that isn't an intentional red herring will distract readers as well.
She has insight into everything, a true polymath
Maybe George Lucas helped write part of the script
It's not really. It's just good writing. If you wrote about the main character checking out a locked door and never came back to it in a book, that would be ad writing. Jess is a good writer.
You should cover more of the Nancy Drew games. There's a lot to poke fun at with them, and they are all super entertaining
I really like them very much, HER Interactive do good work. Surprisingly challenging at times too.
AND fun. There aren't a lot of games like them.
There are so many Nancy Drew games. I can't wait to see you cover more
I loved these games as a highschooler. Coming off of Dagger of Amon Ra they were really fun. Message in a Haunted Mansion (I THINK that was the name) was my favorite, though it did include an evil sliding puzzle as well(May all sliding puzzles be soaked in a vat of acid!!!)
Same!! I really hope she covers The Phantom of Venice, that one’s my favorite.
@@ffx2player Sliding puzzles were some of the worst things about Nancy Drew games.

I knew if I waited long enough that I would be rewarded with some sweet sweet Dagger of Amon Ra background music.

Those... Those accents 😱
100% authentic, right? :3

The Cockney accent is bad enough when it's authentic, but it becomes light years worse when it's fake!

OH MY GOSH IM SO GLAD SOMEONE IS FINALLY COVERING THESE GAMES!
Seriously! They've been around for a good two decades and are consistently funny, challenging and entertaining. I feel like they're so overlooked.
Alicia ayyy only a few more months till Midnight in Salem! Hopefully its a decent game *fingers crossed*
Arglefumph (Arglefumf??) Plays these all the time. Such great games!
Yes! Finally you review one of these!
If you think this is scary, try Shadow at the Water's Edge.
Definitely one of my faves!
Shadow at the Water's Edge is indeed surprisingly scary. Message in a Haunted Mansion scared me a bit too, specially in the beginning with those random noises in the halls.
I really enjoyed Ghost of Thornton Hall too.
Ah yes. The cover art reminds me of Fatal Frame 5, which has a whole cult of maidens who assist people who come to a certain mountain to commit suicide. And when they receive a vision of crossing to the other side, they are put into boxes alive and sunken into dark water at the apex of the mountain.
I just came here to say that. Oh my lord, that game 😂
An Illbleed reference? In a Nancy Drew review? It's more likely than you think! Love it :)
As a big fan of both SGF's Illbleed playthrough and PUR, this video made my night.
I really loved watching Brutalmoose play this game! I really like the eerie atmosphere in it and I think Lou Lou is amazing aswell! 💕
Between the books and the games, Nancy Drew is my childhood
Us Nancy Drew fans call ourselves the "Clue Crew." Welcome! 😍
The accents in these games are all over the place (A lot of the Japanese accents in Shadow at the Water's Edge are painful), but I place that on the So Bad, It's Good category. The acting itself is well-done and I adore Nancy Drew's voice actress.

well done review. glad to see you giving nancy drew some love.
This game is my favorite in the series!! Im so glad to see you reviewing it!!
Please please play more Nancy Drew games. I played so many when I was young. All the sound effects and just through me right back to my 10 year old self. So so great!
This video made me smile so wide. I loved all the Nancy Drew games as a teenager, and I would love to see you cover more of them!
Really love to see you cover some more Nancy Drew games. i grew up with them so i have a lot of nostalgia for the series. Great video as always Roses.
I always liked your videos but the fact you're doing Nancy Drew makes me absolutely love you!!!
You should play Shadow at the Water's Edge if you want some super spooks
I was literally too afraid to go up the stairs in Thornton Hall several times and had to nope out. I haven't played Shadow yet but I can't imagine it's even worse.
vanyadolly oh it’s actually much worse!
And I will sign your petition to abolish slide puzzles, they are the bane of my existence.
i remember when my older sibling got this game and I loved watching them. but I wasn't allowed to watch the intro cutscene because it was too scary
Oh the waves of nostalgia. That music brings me back. I played so many of these.
Boy, that music takes me back. I played most of the earlier games when I was in middle school. I really need to play them again.
I’ve been waiting for years for you to cover these!
I tried to give Lulu a bird cake. I missed. I offered it again, but I missed. Then I passed out on the moor.
My sister was OBSESSED with these games. She'd play them on the couch and I was only allowed to quietly watch if I sat on the edge of the fireplace.
"The puzzles are a combination of logic, interrogation, inventory and BULLSHIT" ughhh why am I laughing so much ahhshadhaj pushing up roses is literally one of my favorite channels in this site
I love Nancy Drew games so much! Most are no where near perfect, but I’ll never get tired of them ❤️
I remember 15 year old me finishing this game at 5:22am I took a 24hr nap after being up for 24hrs playing this game 😂😂
My favorite game series ever!!! So happy you found out about them!
Thanks for doing a Nancy Drew game, I was obsessed with these as a kid! I think I played up to like game #18 of these and I would play the older ones over and over and over. I think my first experience with really talking to other people online was on the Nancy Drew forums lol! Excellent nostalgia trip :D
I read a ton of the Nancy Drew books when I was younger & I've recently started playing the games! I'd love to see more vids on more Nancy Drew stuff!
