I bought my Crosstrek in August of 2014. Nearly 5 years later, and barely over 100K miles, I still love mine. Still runs amazing. My biggest complaint is the lack of power. That's about it.

@John Banket you've been fooled like so many who think the manual version is faster. The 0-60 & 1/4 mile times/speed are no different than the 2.0 CVT auto ..... research it if you're having doubts.

My brother-in-law, a native of Boulder, Colo., is a VERY active back country/mountain trails, roads and highway driver. Skied all his life, tent camped, hiked, nature photographer. He just retired his 21yr old Jeep, did a ton of research, and bought a new Subaru Crosstrek. I visited them in the beginning of June, and for a lot of everyone's entertainment, they took me tons of major mountain driving. NICE CAR!
The three of us and my walker fit and got along well. I'm 71 and they are 70 (He recently retired after playing 34yrs with the Denver Symphony) and my sister was the harp faculty at the University of Denver and first-call union harpist. They're still skiing etc.
As a passenger, I thought the Subaru felt very stable, comfortable and secure. He got the automatic version.

    • @chrish6373
      @chrish6373 5 лет назад +4

It looks like it narrows slightly at the bottom so the lift (you don't have) may actually contribute to rubbing.
For winter I'm running 215/70R16 on +48 rims which are technically +0.7% larger diameter, and I have no rubbing on my RA mudflaps.

      @rdhayes1987 5 лет назад +5

The KO2 in a 215 on a 15” wheel is almost identical in overall diameter to the stock setup. It is a marginally narrower tire, but nothing you’d likely notice. If anything it might help a little with the mud. The 235 is just a little too wide and too tall which creates the rubbing issue.

Completely reliable, great to have AWD and higher ground clearance, reasonable MPG, low sound levels (even on poor Alaska backroads for ten weeks), good comfort. Wish it came with water temp gauge (but can always have one installed). Really, really happy with the car.

I have put about 30k miles on it in 8 months. Heres my review THE THING IS MADE TO BE DRIVEN. I LOVE it. 10k of the miles driven I was even towing a 6-700lbs trailer up and down mountain passes. The paddle shifters worked great, still haven't needed new brakes, and the CVT has gotten smoother over time. I love it. Still haven't had the $$$ to upgrade the setup but the car still looks sooo good stock. (mines grey too)

    Well done Talon,
A great review, honest and comprehensive! You must have spent a lot of time planning your report because, although quite long, it covers a lot of interesting points.

This, in comparison to another 'Subaru' video I just watched where the guy talked so fast there were actually times I couldn't understand what he was saying even after rewinding 2 and 3 times. I have the older model Crosstrek and was surprised you didn't mention the interior noise and quality of the audio system. Maybe they made improvements on both of those for the newer model but it was difficult to hold a conversation with someone in the rear at highway speeds and the speakers are really bad honestly. I tore my car apart to add dynamat style panels to the shell and then added regular jute padding before putting the panels back on. Helped to reduce noise considerably and wasn't too expensive of a project. Also swapped out the speaker system with OEM upgrades minus the subwoofer, it's better but not great really. I should mention I have stock wheels and roof rack so I wasn't getting higher noise levels from any changes in those. Apart from that I really love the car and am glad I purchased it.

I have a 2014 crosstrek and it fits me and my family really well. we have gone to the drive in before and put a full size futon mattress on the back with the seats down, it curled up on the sides but it was really comfortable. The crosstrek line has had some upgrades since then but over the past 4.5yrs we've had the car there has been little to no complaints or issues.
Since its the "family car" and my wife's daily driver, the crosstrek is still stock but we have not had any issues with performance either. Like you, we knew what we were getting into and it fit us perfectly for what we needed.

1 year now on my 2018 fully-loaded XV ... great car, very happy with it. The headunit has frozen once, but otherwise it's ok -- streaming music and using the GPS makes it slower for sure. Car itself is smooth, accelerates just fine for me, no issues at all. Bad snow fall this year in the mountains, and can't get it stuck at all (where other AWDs have had to dig out). X-Mode rocks. :-) I'm getting 28-30mpg with the CVT. I came from a 2006 H6 Outback, miss the room and power, but love the new tech. I guess maybe next time I'll get new Outback or Levorg if I need more room, but no regrets. Enjoy.

I have one of these it is great for carrying my bikes and my longbow.
There are a few nitpicks I have however: 1- the touch screen. Touch screens suck. Should have regular controls so you can memorize button positions and not have to look away from road to change station. 2 - thick windshield pillars create blind spots on winding mountain roads or around sharp turns. You have to crane your neck to look past them. Yes I know they contain airbags which is nice but it would be better if they out them somewhere they do not create blindspots. 3- The clutch is very sensitive and easily damaged.
However, on the plus side, you can still GET one with a manual transmission, unlike other brands. 4 - You have to jury rig disabling the passenger seatbelt warning because every time you put a backpack or bag of groceries there it beeps like a maniac. It is as if the engineers were so shortsighted they did not consider that there could be any other reason for weight on the seat besides for a human arse, nor did they provide an easy switch to disable it.
In general, however, this is a pretty good vehicle.

I live in a town in the foothills of Alberta Canada, and I can say between driving into the mountains and driving into the city, my 2014 Crosstrek is the best vehicle I've ever owned (I purchased brand new). Bar none.
I really like your Hella lights because they look dope. My area is super rural so we drive vast distances in darkness, and I think they'd also be functional if I got them.
About your mud flaps. Get new ones. Man, that noise would drive me nuts.
I don't have A/T tires but I think I might do that for my next purchase. I'd keep stock sizing though because I don't want to lose the precise odometer and speedometer ratings.
Mine is also a manual transmission, which, due to the really crappy horsepower, helps hugely. I highly recommend a MT Crosstrek to anybody. I use 8 litres per 100 kms, which is a little aggressive. In the summer, drops to 7.2 L per 100 kms. It's a good car on mileage despite it being worse than the CVT.
But I think I want a Turbo Kit. Shit dude, we should get turbo kits.
Note that at 100,000 miles/160,000 kms, my front CV joints went. (I drive a lot)
Power distribution is 65/35 rear/front. Performance type distribution. Best AWD anybody will ever get.

This week I went in to the Subaru dealer here in Reno NV. The guy I got was a total jerk. Right off I expressed my concern about the power. He replied “people who buy Subaru don’t buy them for speed”. As if power only effects top speed. Like I looked like I was trying to race. I get in the upper thirties and even lower 40s in mpgs on the highway with my 2016 Crosstrek simply by using my Eyesight on cruise control at 65-70 mph. I've been driving the car for almost three years now back and forth up and down the northern half of Rt 495 outside of Boston. Very consistent results as long as it's not too windy and such, though I get better mpgs driving south on the northern half of Rt 495.

I have a 2019 Crosstrek and I often get 38 - 39 mpg on the mountain road highways and 34-36 on city/highway driving. One of the things I love about this car, I've gone 500 miles on a tank of gas and it cost less than $30 to refill the tank, at $2 a gallon.
Also, the gas tank is on the right side of the car, the passenger side, so I often just buzz right to the tanks at crowded gas stations because most cars seem to have gas tanks on the driver side.
The downside of Subaru is that because I love to drive them, I put lots of miles on them really fast. My Forester had 100K at just three years old.

1st off, thank you for buying Subaru. I build them for a living (not crosstreks tho) and always love seeing ppl happy with their vehicle. 2nd, yeah i want subaru to amp up hp as well. I think the big issue is that with AWD adding hp will come at the cost of mpg and really all subarus have meh mpg for their size and hp.

Mike DeRosier I have the same crosstrek and with the seats folded down, it’s more than enough space for several dogs. Especially nice with the all weather mats on the back of the rear seats. Only issue is if you have more than 2 people + dogs and can’t fold the seats down, it gets tight. My lab rides in the back 2-3 times a week for the past year and loves the space even when I have gear

I had the cloth seats on a previous Crosstrek. Now I have the limited.
The limited seats are actually vinyl, not leather.
A rag and your choice of cleaner will take care of anything that you track in on the vinyl.
The cloth seats being more porous can be difficult to clean.
When it comes to strength, they both have there limitations.

I bought a 2019 Premium 6spd when it dropped. Did the whole lift and wheels kit. Had skids and all kinds of other things.
Got rid of it about 4 months ago and went with a 3.6 Outback instead which feels far superior.
    1. Speed: The Crosstrek is super underpowered. I get the whole economy car argument because I did buy it to save of gas. But that thing super struggled up hills. I live in the Tahoe region and getting around in the Crosstrek was stressful. The 3.6 is actually pretty fun to drive.
    2. Space: The Crosstrek was small. I’m 6’2 about 210 pounds and felt super cramped in the car all of the damn time. I’ll never tell you the story about the time that I tried sleeping in the back of it.
It’s a great car but at a huge cost. Sadly those cons were a huge breaking point for me. Hopefully the new updated engines have some more power.

Regarding complaints about speed: I have a 2008 Outback Sport (non turbo impreza wagon), a similar engine as the crosstrek. It's just under 200hp with 200 ft lbs of torque. It's plenty fast. It's not that naturally aspirated single cam engine is slow, it's just that it isn't turbo charged. Subaru isn't competing w Porsche for your money, they're competing with Honda and Mazda. You'll find a naturally aspirated base Subaru is quicker than any factory Honda sans the Civic Si, which would be competitive with the WRX/STi. I haven't driven a Crosstrek, I thinks it a little slower than my Impreza, but its not a sports car. You have AWD and over 150 hp, that's a good start above the competition.

theodorepedro if you want to go off-roading get a small truck or Jeep. Crosstreks will go over big potholes but nothing else. They are not nearly as capable as people on youtube make them seem.
I went from a WRX to a brand new crosstrek. All these parts and lift are way more expensive than they need to be, and they are week and boring to drive. It got shit mileage for a small car too.
I sold it and got a truck, was much happier using it for camping, hauling, and still got 23 MPGs. It was a brand new Colorado. Lifts were much better for it, more options, and better prices.
Then I sold the truck and got a Jeep rubicon. It’s loud inside(as is the crosstrek) but it gets me everywhere and I don’t have to worry, more and cheaper(and way better) options for mods. It’s fun to drive. And way more capable stock than a crosstrek with even $10k in mods would ever dream to be.

Making U-turns and general parking lot maneuvers can feel like a chore trying to avoid it. It's not just a you having bigger tires/flaps issue, its' a general Subaru Crosstrek design flaw.
