  • According to legends, Lao Ge is at least two hundred years old, yet, he himself claimed to be personally acquainted with Guru Shoken and Guru Laghima, which would have made him more than four thousand years old. But how has a man, who is lively and able to keep up with bandits, able to live so long? Well, I believe I have uncovered his secret. Let me explain.

    What questions do you have about The Rise of Kyoshi that you want answered? Let me know in the comments!

    My theory is linked to this, but also the entire opposite.
    Laghima and Shoken are famously philosophical rivals. Therefore, as Laghima champions being unattached from the world, Shoken's teachings require you to attach yourself to it. When Lao Ge is teaching Kyoshi about immortality, he hints that she needs to have an awareness about her physical body and how to stop it from ageing, instead of just spiritually detaching herself.
    I think this makes sense as rather than entirely being a recluse, Kyoshi is known for being politically proactive. She formed Kyoshi Island and ruled as governor, changed the Earth Kingdom government, started the Dai Li, and so on. This is also true of Lao Ge: he does not disattach himself from the world, rather he is a notorious bandit, and has killed politically important people. It's hardly the ascetic lifestyle that people like Laghima or Zaheer seem to champion.
    But I always love to hear new theories!

    I'm reading The Rise of Kyoshi right now. I really love how the story uses small details to remind everybody of what we've already been told in the show that the separation of The Four Nations and Four Elements is a lie. Like how The Flying Opera Members can use Earth Bending or Water Bending to seemingly walk on air; and how Ranji was able to do it with her firebending after watching them

    Very interesting video, I also think that seperation is the key to immortality and I'm amazed by Lao Ge that he could achieve that and that he hasn't driven insane by now (I mean, at some point he must have had people he cared about and letting them go and seeing them dying isn't an easy thing). It's sad that he slowly dies but I think he was aware of that and agreed to it so it shouldn't be too sad (dying us always sad but I hope you get what I mean).

    Hey, just wanted to critic your videos. I don’t know if you make a script. But make one, so you don’t have problems with words. Your kinda free-styling wich makes you videos lesser nice to watch. Use some kinda music in the background. Its really tiredly to watch it without. And make more use of footage. Thanks for the video !

      Hi there! Thanks for your comment - I do indeed make a script, unfortunately I struggle with dyslexia and dyspraxia and so I can't keep on topic completely or remember words well but I will work on it as best I can! I definitely aim to use more footage also, copyright is always a concern but it's something I am aiming for - thank you for taking the time to offer advice, and I hope you stick around and subscribe for more content :)

      It's not that serious, she mispronounced one word. The video flow appropriately and all her main points were emphasized, so, while the critic was nice, it wasn't really necessary I feel.
      Though, yes. Having a script could help.

    Good theory, but I totally disagree
    1) The characters with whom she is associated in the book were not created in 2007, so obviously we do not see them in flashbacks.
    You cannot show that which has not yet been created.
    2) According to additional materials, she had a daughter (biological or adopted, this is unknown), which definitely means affection for her daughter.
    3) And also, it seems she had a relationship with girls and guys throughout her life (which also means affection), if we take Kya's words literally
    So I don’t think that she will separate herself from affection and loved ones, but maybe there is something else that will allow her to live so long.
    Sorry if there are grammatical errors here, I'm not from the USA / UK

    • @AHealthyDoseofFran
      @AHealthyDoseofFran  4 года назад

      Thank you for your comment! To answer your points,
      1) From the episode, her friends now in the book would be dead by the time she faced Chen (if the timeline is correct), I meant more, there was no one with her in general
      2) As we see with her parents and even with Ozai, just because you have a child doesn't mean you feel affection/a connection to them, so this could still be a thing
      3) and also for her relationships, they sound as if they were fleeting so, yes affection, but no deep connection
      But I do see your point! For me more than anything, my point was more on the fact that yes you can be around people but not connected to them, which I feel is where this is heading, and how Kyoshi was described in the series - but thank you for commenting! I hope you stick around, subscribe, and enjoy my future content :D

      @@AHealthyDoseofFran
      1) Kyoshi is 40 years old in flashback so her friends from the book will still be alive by the time she encounters Chin.
      2) I doubt that she will be cold to her daughter, given the fact that Keslang treated her.
      I am sure that she will give her daughter love and care as Kelsang once did for her.
      3) But we do not know for sure. I think that Kyoshi had a strong relationships throughout her life.
      We find out which of us is right in three months! :)

    This is hands down my favorite video on this channel. You amaze me every time with the video's about the Kyoshi Novels!! Especially the theory about Tieguai the Immortal / Lao Ge's immortality fading because of his (future) friendship with Kyoshi & Kyoshi achieving immortality herself. damn i love this channel

  • @jlfitzg1
    @jlfitzg1 4 года назад +7

    After I read Lao Ge's sections in The Rise of Kyoshi, I immediately thought of Guru Patik and Bumi from ATLA. Both of these men had friends from before Aang's century-long cryo-stasis, so I wonder if they had learned the secret of immortality as well. Bumi became King of Omashu, yet there is no mention of a spouse or children. This idea of emotional and spiritual separation from others I believe will be paramount for Kyoshi's character throughout the rest of her life and into the next novel. If you watch SliceofOtaku's video, "The Real Reason Aang and Korra are so Different," he notes that Kyoshi took her role as avatar very seriously. He further elaborates that her mission plus her extremely long life likely left little time for strong personal relationships. This ultimately likely becomes her greatest regret. As far back as Avatar Yangchen, we see that each new avatar's personality is heavily based on the regrets of the previous. This would explain why Roku built such strong friendships throughout his life, including that with Sozin, which would later be his hamartia.

      jlfitzg1 I very much feel that too for Pathik 100% with him being friends with Gyatso - it’s a fascinating subject, and yes I love that sliceofotaku video! • @lifescat9615

    Letting the philosophical thing apart, There are some species that are biologicaly immortal. But
    Once I've heard about an animal(a reptile I think) that could move and renew its cells at will, thus making them practically immortal. When I heard that I immediately thought of Lao Ge's method of Immortality, which is very similar. His method is to look into yourself and pick every part and put it in the right place, which then has a physical reaction in the body. I think that the Author must have studied those biological immortal irl creatures to make Lao Ge's immortality, which makes it incredibly realistic

      It is a very sad fact, but is a well versed trope of someone leaving the one they love for "the greater good" which could be what Kyoshi feels she has to do. It is sad, and I'm intrigued to read the final book to find out if that's true
