- How to clean leaky battery corrosion from a remote. Ever wondered how to get rid of that chalky white stuff when batteries leak? Grab a Q-tip and some white vinegar.
*This battery reconditioning program exceeded my presumptions. It worked on any drill battery, several AA and AAA batteries, **batery.repair** and any camera battery. The steps are simple and the act itself is exciting to do. No matter what type of battery you`ve got, it is sure to function again!*
Making use of the ruclips.net/user/postUgkxcJ22tnHH9l1vjdIdEIG27iOG55P7LXI8 reconditioning plan, I just saved 2 auto batteries from being completely junked. The guides were very simple to follow. I wish I would have found this years ago! You may use the guide to recondition any battery type
10 years later…still works like a charm. Thanks lady. My digital scale working again.
This video just SAVED me $180 for a bed control remote that has been discontinued. I already cleaned up the leakage once with vinegar but after watching this and reading the comments, I tried again, and this time til the terminals were as clean as I could get them. I think this is the secret....the terminals must be very clean of the debris. Now my remote works!!! Many thanks.
You just made my 6-year-old son the happiest little boy!!!!!
Wow, turns out we really do learn something new everyday. It did not occur to me that all I had to do to get my piece of electronic to turn on and back to working again was to clean out the battery corrosion. Wow, did not even think something so simple would work so well. Thank you, for spreading the word. :)
Thank you so much for sharing! I was using alcohol and was about to give up. I called Sony and they wanted to charge 46.00 to answer a what to do question. THANK GOD FOR RUclips!!!
Batteries in my firestick remote exploded recently. Cleaned it up with this method. Works 100% . Thank you
Me too. I guess we should remove the batteries when not using the remote!
As a former radio shack employee, I can tell you alkaline batteries are accepted for recycling and then tossed in the garbage. The other types of batteries should be recycled however as they contain heavy metals that are very bad for the environment, alkaline batteries are best taken to a local hazardous waste disposal. My family use to save them up and drop them off every few months, now we live close enough to drop of batteries, old paint, etc when ever we have to. Hope this helps.
Thank you! You just saved me some money. I was going to spend $20 on a replacement remote for a roku and now I don't have to!
Hi there! Remote control disaster here... we followed your remedy with great success. When it came to the plastic backing, the white chemical deposits were thickly stuck to it. I just dipped the whole plastic back into the vinegar solution. The stuck on deposits released immediately. I just wiped it dry.
Hey Calli - Good video! Fizzing is caused by the release of gasses; KOH + vinegar gives potassium acetate (not a gas). The battery contains KOH, which leaks out and quickly reacts with CO2 in the air, or from other metal carbonate deposits on the metal parts of the item, to form potassium carbonate. Adding vinegar to that releases CO2, which fizzes. Sorry...I'm a chemist. By the way, this worked on my mom's three old remotes and an old VHS 8MM conversion cassette. Thanks!
Will Apple cider vinegar work?
It's been 10years mr hotdog are you doing well!
Your tip worked perfectly. Saved me $200.00 on a fireplace, remote transmitter. Thanks!!!
You saved the day! I just sat down to watch tv & the remote didn't work. No problem, just change the batteries....not the problem, but battery leakage instead. Your tip using a Q-tip worked in seconds. Thank you!
I like how it fizzes. It got all the acid including the areas the q-tip didn't reach. Thanks for the tip!
I had this problem on my Kia Rio. When I was trying to figure out why my headlights would never turn off, I realized that there was corrosion all on the inside of these two fuses caused by either water getting in or just the battery next to it leaking fluid because the mechanic didn't close the lid correctly. That white gunk is what was all in these two fuses and now I have a fix without spending $200+ on a car repair. Thank you for the video!
hello! thanks for the tip! how long did you leave to dry out before putting new batteries back in? thx
Girl in video: “It is toxic so I’m gonna wear gloves”
Me: been rubbing the rust off with my finger before video..
and i rubbed my face too
Yeah same lol me to
I tried licking it off for sum reason
Thanks very much for this simple solution. I watched one guy’s video where he used about 4 different “he-man” hardware store products to achieve basically the same result as using two things available in every kitchen - water & vinegar. And yes, he was working on a simple remote, not a 3-story turbine.
The potassium hydroxide that leaks from the batteries quickly reacts with carbon dioxide in the air, forming potassium carbonate -- and that's what the "chalky white stuff" is. Potassium carbonate is not particularly toxic, so the gloves are really not necessary, but you can use them if you're concerned. The white vinegar solution is still effective at cleaning the compound from the terminals. A very helpful video, thanks. I just cleaned a couple of calculators with this method.
I have a digital clock with dead batteries for like 2+ years, now with exploded batteries. Thank you for this tip! I can clean it now and see if it still works!
I sell used items online and have been wondering if I can take care of this and sell them or if it's been money wasted. Thanks for the help.
Tried this last night to my remote and it worked thank you so much for posting this . It saved us a lot of grief to buy a new remote and configure it to our TV. xoxo
I just did this for one of my Mom's remotes. Thank you for posting this. It was so great how quick and easy it was.
GREAT TIP. Thanks to you I have just saved a remote control that I was certain would be destined for the trash bin.
WOW 🤩 YOU ARE AN Angel 😇! I was about to throw the remote away, COULDN’T OPERATE THE SMART TV…
Didn’t think it would work but just one click on the power button, and I was back 💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽 THANK YOU 🙏 😊
But, did it work? We wanted to see it worked after the cleaning.
I followed your tutorial. Just got rid of Battery Corrosion. At least for me, it was on the contacts, the remote did not work before cleaning, and after cleaning it works beautifully! Thank you very much :-)
Thanks! I discovered a bit of corrosion in a battery-powered video game controller last night. I first thought to dip it in dark soda, but quickly talked myself out of this idea. I didn't even consider white vinegar. Thanks for the informative video and advice :)
Few minutes ago could not change the channel and found the TV remote leaked potassium acetate. Thanks for the tip. I will recycle the batteries and wear gloves. Yay!
It worked, thank you so much. I had an old VHS cassette adaptor for old little tapes my Dad used to take with him camcorder at all family parties. Was very corroded. I can now put them in the VCR and on Christmas Eve have fun looking at the oldies.
Thanks! Rescued a remote that I that I thought was completely dead. Probably would have worked on a battery-operated clock that I disposed of a few months ago.
This was really helpful. I need to clean my Wii remotes because they have actually gone sticky from all the battery mess
I loved the Fletch reference!! I'd love to take you and your husband out to dinner as a thank you for showing us this tip, and we can put our dinner tab on the Underhill's bill! ;-)
James Tyree will you be ordering a steak sandwich as well? Lol
Thank you!! My battery operated wreath lights are back in business!
Excellent, thank you very much! I just salvaged an expensive flashlight that had been damaged a leaky battery.
Works like a charm.
This trick works great. I had a remote for an DVD player that had battery spillage and was not working because the spring contacts for the AA batteries was caked with white junk. This worked right away
Thanks for the information. #1 project today is to clean out two TV remotes.
Please specify the acetic percentage of the vinegar you are using. My son pointed out that white vinegar that is 5% acetic would have different results than using a stronger vinegar such as one that is 30% acetic. But thank you for the demo. Too often I forget to remove batteries from my electronics. Hopefully this will restore them to functionality.
Great tip! worked like a charm on a completely ruined remote
Brilliant. Fixed my old portable CD-player in 5 minutes. Many thanks. Roger. April 2020
Kelly! You saved us! Now the tank gang and I can play our fav game!!
Yeah just did it with my remote control but just cleaned off the battery with water and wiped down my controller back panel with a damp paper towels and it back to working thanks for this video it help me out alot
Love the Fletch reference!
Awesome! Saved my daughter's favorite toy!
You totally saved the remote for our geotrax train set. Thank you thank you thank you!
This worked very well! Someone had given me a DVD player that was barely used however the batteries in the remote control were a little corroded. I think how that happened was having the buttons on the remote control covered with items which engaged the batteries even though the player itself was not used a lot. Anyway, I cleaned the remote, that eerily looks exactly like the one in the video (a sony DVD player). I let it dry out overnight last night and I tried using it and it worked! Thanks so much for posting this! I was thinking that I would have to order a new remote. NOPE!! :)
Thanks a million! This fixed my satellite remote even though the battery terminals were much harder to reach.
Just saved a pair of Bose headphones using this tip. Thank you!
Thanks for posting !!!!! Worked for my “Non” working remote.
It worked like a charm on the corroded terminals of a wiimote. Thank you!!
Thank you. This was really helpful.
My long forgotten-about batteries were coated like fur. Thanks for this!
Thank you so much! Just fixed a $300 keyboard ! THANK YOU !!
Have lots of the battery operated candles with allot of corrosion! They are expensive and I hope this saves me from throwing them away!!
Thank you so much, just got an old camera working! great video.
Thanks. This was just what I needed. Incredibly simple. Love the reference to Fletch!
You saved my 15+ year old badly corroded VHS-C Adapter Converter; a bit of tinfoil after helped on my end too for better connection but still you made it work :)
this got my old discman working. thanks!
AWESOME! Thank you for that tip!
This was so useful thank you! I finally fixed my nail dryer and can quickly dry my nails again.
Is this what you need to do when your remote stops working and you change the battery and it still doesn't work?
Thanks a ton! Was gonna get a new speaking Merriam Webster. Saved me $120.
Do not throw old batteries in the garbage. Take them to a place that recycles them. That being said, thank you for the video, very helpful.
Thanks very much just saved me replacing a Panasonic phone used in our kitchen 😊
really great tip, was about to order a new tv remote and you saved it :).
Can u still use a torch if u get rid of the leaky energiser battery? Without cleaning it?
The corrosion may prevent the new batteries from making good electrical contact with the metal contacts in the torch. It's best to clean the contacts as shown in the video before installing new batteries.
how long do you let it dry for
Thank you so much!!!! I just fixed my XBox 360 controller.
she gave good tips and everybody just complaining because she threw batteries in garbage. Everybody do that, we can't do anything. Nowadays people think that recycling things is useless… they will see the consequences in the future
You’re the real MVP🏆🏆🏆🏆
Hooray! This video saved my Roku remote. Thanks!
Doesm this work for the brown erosion as well?
I guess it makes more sense to clean the most important connection part first before you fill the Q-tip up with potassium hydroxide galore all over the plastic first LOL? Anyway I wish you mentioned why you use white vinegar instead of cheap red vinegar and since I don’t have either if alcohol would work and why not straight vinegar?
Alcohol is not an acid like vinegar is...like the video explained, it is the acid in the vinegar that dissolves the alkali from the battery. You must use an acid. thanks...
Thanks for the tip. My remote is clean and works perfect. Good job :)
God bless you. You saved me money and time omg this is amazing
Love the Fletch reference.
Great tip, thank you. But I have to chime in, as the very first thing I thought when I heard "just throw them away" is " recycle those batteries!!" Radio Shack accepts disposable batteries for recycling, and many drop-off centers have bins for batteries along with their dumpsters for cardboard, glass, etc.
Thanks! Worked like a charm on a game controller
thank you so so much. have thrown away a few things before seeing this.
thanks for posting. one tip, you should find a place to recycle old batteries, they're terrible for the environment. Lots of places have collection bins for them. Just a thought. Or better, by rechargables.
Yes, we have to here! Most places take old AA and AAA batteries back, radio shack, etc.
Does this work with Apple cider vinegar
Thanks this video was very helpful in repairing my sound amplifier, remote. I had to use about 6-8 q-tips to clean mine though.
Thank you Calli, but please learn how to recharge even regular alkaline batteries with today's new chargers. I've been doing this for years and can't remember when I had to buy new ones!
Thanks for the tip.... It saved my Nikon Flash....
Currently, there are over 7 billion people in the World. Imagine if each of them threw away just 1 double A battery in the next 10 years. That would be 7 billion batteries. imagine the poisonous batteries we are putting in the Earth to go to some magic place we all never even think about.. Where's that? That every larger pile of toxicity we call the DUMP. Please Recycle. Spread the word. Love your video. It was of help to save my thermostat!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! You Helped me save a very expensive Nikon Flash!
thank you so much for sharing this you make my remote control worked again you saved me 100$
What if the spring coil was so corroded that it broke off? I could get fix the rust, but the battery won’t connect properly for it to work.
sure am glad i could see every detail in 360p...
This was uploaded over 6 years ago, Mr. Ungrateful. Maybe it's your device that's crappy or maybe you can make a better video in 4K?
@Bluelightbandit I definitely could make a better video at higher quality using just my phone. Don’t even need a camera. You know phones record 4k now, right? And you also realize that zooming the camera in reduces its resolution even further. You should instead, just move the camera closer
Thank you thank you thank you! I wish I could hit the like button 10 times!
Thank you! This video really helped! I actually didn't have white wine vinegar I only had apple cider vinegar, but it still worked! I guess as long as its vinegar thats probably the only thing that matters but anyway I digress. Thank you so much for this useful tip! Now I can use my air conditioner remote again! I'm so happy! :)
How long to dry?
Thank you!! This worked on my fire stick remote!!
I'll have to look into this. I have my LEGO Mindstorm, which if you look on Amazon, goes for around $800 - $1000 (cause they don't make it anymore) ... so yeah, I need to clean it. Also have an old flash for my grandfather's Minolta, which is probably pretty pricy
Nice tip, but please do not throw away your used batteries in the trash. Recycle them please.
Tom Mangelschots ♡ thanks for sharing
This worked great on my PS3 Blu rat remote. Thank you so much and thank you Craigslist
What if you clean it and it doesn't work? How do I fix my remote if it doesn't work after this battery acid leaked on it?
This is the MAIN (possibly ONLY) reason I am a Facebook ADDICT. Great advice, find answers to ANY question, etc etc. Thank ya'll.
Worked like a charm!
