  • Benares, in the North-East of India, the most important holy city of the country… Planted on the banks of the Ganges, sacred river par excellence, few places in India are as colorful, chaotic and imbued with spirituality as Benares… Hindus cremate their dead, but to be sure that they reach paradise directly by avoiding the cycle of reincarnations, it must be done in Benares… Every day, strange funeral processions converge on the city, some come from very away... Then, in the tumult of the crowd and the traffic, the corpse is carried on the back of a man through the streets, for several kilometers to the bank of the Ganges... From the four corners of the country, every week, thousands of tons of wood arrive in Benares…Cremations are the main reason for this…It happens that up to 300 bodies are burned per day, such a flow imposes a bewildering stock of logs…The “wood route” is a huge business shared by a few local families… India and st also the world's leading producer of coal and all around Benares, open pit mines abound... Once extracted, the precious ore reaches the city's giant deposits by road... Throughout the year, thousands of pilgrims go to Benares to immerse themselves in the Ganges… We wash away our sins there, we implore the deities… By train, bus, tractor and even on foot, all means of transport are good to reach safely…

I watched another documentary on the Ganges that had a segment on Benares. I find it amazing, the resilience of the human body, if anyone from America or England went there and bathed in the Ganges they would likely fall VERY sick because there body is not custom to the water.
However these people have been bathing in the Ganges and other rivers there whole lives. There body's have adapted to the microorganisms and contaminants. The human body is an amazing organism.
I watch these documentary's when I feel down or depressed in my life, all of us feel like the challenges of life keep grinding us down but when I think about how much harder life is for others in the world, I get over feeling sorry for myself and be grateful for the life I have.

Interesting take, these documentary's are old I grant you but that doesn't make them irrelevant. As someone in America I know little about India witch is why I try to learn. It is my understanding that Ganga is a godess in heaven that descended to earth in the form of a river to carry sins away and bring the deceased to there next lives. I have watched recent documentary's and while things are getting better in India the industry is clashing with the spirituality. Industry that carelessly disposes of its waste in the river while the masses continue there bathing in the river without fear, there faith maintaining them. A documentary is not fake just because it's old, they simply show how things used to be. @@magnusRAWBhaarat

He goes up to him and says “Hey if you had a bigger boat, you can catch even more fish which means you can have a big company, list it on the stock exchange and buy even more boats”. The fisherman asks, “So what do you do after doing all this and getting all this money?” . The American replies: “Relax on a beach, grill a fish and spend time with my family”.

No one takes water or drinks water from the cremation place, water flows too fast and no one is allowed to go inside because in the past many people drowned

This is less malignant than doc. about The Ganges ; there are 1) thieves on the roads 2) police corruption 3) the holy Ganges where the ashes of corpses & baby corpses directly discarded into the water w/out being cremated ( because they believe the baby corpses are free of germs!!), taking a bath in that water, washing clothes nearby, cows & boars inside the water next to those humans, etc. etc. W/ no question at all the water is severely contaminated w/ germs, & so the mortality rate is obviously very high, but just a few wks ago India has exceeded China in terms of population being nearly 1.4 billion, cause the birth rate has been exponentially & increasingly much higher than the death rate. I assume they must have been spending a significant portion of time on their beds. ,,,,(10/27/23)

You ought to see the doc. about The Ganges, the holy river of India, cause this one seems to have merely scratched the surface! The Ganges documentary is seemingly tantamount to a deadly horror movie w/ no qualms in the least cuz it almost made my hair stand on end or is it too exaggerated? Nonetheless, after having watched the latter doc., I could imagine not too many of us would like to visit there, especially in the foreseeable future to say the least.( seems like Dystopia on earth? ). I wonder if anyone comply w/ me. (10/28/23)
