    Thanks for the very informative video. I decided to give T Mobile home Internet a try as they just made available in my address. I am in a typical suburban housing area, with a tower about mile away. I got 4 bars on e gateway. With your instruction, I disabled WiFi on KDV21 gateway, add Linksys Ax4200 mesh router in Bridge mode, I had about 30 devices connected, and with multiple stream devices going, I am getting speed between 176Mbps to 270Mbps. So far so good. Will let it run for the next 15 days to see how stable it is to determine if I will keep it. Once again, thanks for your insight and efforts.

    Thanks for the video. I was able to get the Gateway wifi disabled. I had an issue with the powershell install on mac os version 10.13.6. I can't update the OS past that version and the PS version 7.xx needed 11 or higher. I found and older version, 6.2.3 for PS that installed and worked fine for this task. • @helphq
      @helphq  Год назад +3

      The intent of the video is only for people wanting to use a different router. If you left the WiFi on the gateway on the signals could cause interference with one another and it would also cause you to have two separate networks in your house to choose from, but neither of them would be able to talk to each other. Meaning if you have a computer on one WiFi network it wouldn’t see any of the devices on the other WiFi network. The WiFi 6 on the T-Mobile gateway isn’t bad and unless you’re trying to use WiFi 6 for the extra bandwidth and not as a backhaul on a mesh system there isn’t much of a point in not using it. In my case for example my house exceeds the sq ft that the gateways Wi-Fi covers so I use a mesh system instead. That’s all. This isn’t going to make your internet fast or increase speed or anything like that. It just allows me to use WiFi in parts of my house I previously couldn’t.

    Do you need a gigabit hub with this or do you just need the eero mesh system and cat6 cables and I was wondering what’s the specific name of the eero mesh Wi-Fi system you used? Thank you for the video it was very helpful

    • @helphq
      @helphq  Год назад +1

      What specifically are you trying to do? If you just want to turn the Wi-Fi off and use Ethernet you don’t need a third party router. If you’re looking for more coverage you can use any router you want to use. I use the eero pro 6e and we have 3 of them covering our house. The eero app takes care of connecting them all together. I used to use the eero 6 (older model) we also had 3 of those and it also worked fine.

    • @helphq
      @helphq  Год назад +1

      The gateways themselves have decent coverage depending on where you place it in your home. Adding a router isn’t going to make the service any faster. Some will argue that they can adjust the MTU and do some other nerdy stuff to squeeze more out of it but for the average person it’s not worth the effort.

    Great video!
    Have a question regarding the fact that on my current system, I have an old router reconfigured to use as an access point in my shop...connected via Ethernet cable to my house router.
    Followed RUclips videos in order to make it work. My tech skills and knowledge are minimal, but thanks to creators such as yourself, those skills are increasing!!!
    So when re-configuring the old router, I turned off DHCP so the primary router is the one assigning IP addresses. (Is that correct?) When I now replace the satellite internet with the new sagemcom gateway (wi fi off) I assume it will it be assigning the IP addresses? You mentioned set current router in bridge mode...if I do this, then will that effect my access point (old router in shop) or will I need to change something in either my primary router or the access point old router?
    I appreciate any help or advice!
    Blessings,
    Charles

    • @helphq
      @helphq  Год назад +1

      Okay so in the simplest terms if you’re replacing one service providers modem for another you shouldn’t have to change anything else. You just need to reboot them after the new service is up and running to get a new IP address assigned, but I have some thoughts and questions:
      1) is your current setup: satellite isp modem (Wi-Fi off)> home router (third party) > shop router?
      - in this setup I would ask how old your home router is? Is it a stand alone router or a mesh system? Depending on the answers here you might be able to just use the Wi-Fi in the T-Mobile Home Internet Gateway as it is going to be Wi-Fi 6 which is the latest spec Wi-Fi out.
      - you could then move the home router to the shop and not use the shop router at all. Turning off DHCP is not the same as bridge mode or access point mode. So in bridge mode your ISP modem/ Gateway is still handling everything. The actual routing portion of the router when in bridge mode is shut off and everything is forwarded to the ISP gateway.
      Why would you want this? Well most people use bridge mode as a method to extend their Wi-Fi signal using a mesh system.
      When you turn off DHCP your router is still a router and therefore the only thing you’ve done is change your routers ability to automatically assign IP Addresses. None of your ports are being forwarded which is ideally what you want.
      2) does either of your routers (home or shop) have the capability to go into bridge mode or access point mode?
      - With T-Mobile Home Internet it’s kind of non traditional in the sense that it uses a different Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) compared to other ISPs. So you don’t want to go connecting a bunch of routers to the gateway that can’t be put into bridge mode because it’s going to make your internet slow. Yes it will work but you’re adding all sorts of extra layers the data has to work through before you as the user actually see anything populate on your computer or device which in turn makes the internet feel slow.
      My setup looks like this: T-Mobile Gateway (wifi off) > eero mesh system (bridge mode) > netgear managed switch (to provide more Ethernet ports)
      If none of this makes any sense at all let me know and I can try to condense this and make it easier.

    • @charlesk5519
      @charlesk5519 Год назад +2

      Thank you so much for your reply! Not sure why it disappeared earlier, but it has reappeared! And your assumptions on my set up are correct! So, if I understand your answer, I can use the T-mobile gateway in my house, making use of it's better WiFi, then relocate my current router to my shop (connected via Ethernet cable) and set it in bridge mode. Are there any other config changes to shop router I need to make other than bridge mode?
      Really appreciate your videos and willingness to share your knowledge with the rest of us! The tech stuff is a bit difficult to keep up with for some of us! The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know!!! LOL
      Blessings, Charles

    • @helphq
      @helphq  Год назад

      You got it Charles. Just switch the shop router to bridge mode or in some cases it’s called access point mode and as long as it’s connected to the T-Mobile gateway via Ethernet you’re good to go. T-Mobile home internet is very user friendly in that setting up the service and gateway itself is very easy and done from an app on your phone or tablet. No fiddling or messing with ports or anything else.

      Using the incorrect Administrator Password is 99.99% of the time the issue. This is not the same as the WiFi password and if you changed the Admin Password at any point it would be that instead of what is listed on the back of your gateway. Alternatively you can factory reset the gateway so the passwords are the default and try again. I would also highly recommend using an Ethernet cable instead of trying to do it over WiFi. If you do it over WiFi there is no way for the computer to save the config file because the WiFi will disconnect.

      Make sure you’re using Cat 5e or greater (Cat 6) cables. Cat 5e will support up to 1Gbps anything above that you want Cat 6. If you’re using an older spec cable that could be your bottleneck.
