Definitely better than nothing if using it for a building like a barn or other metal building. I’ve got a barn where my service is 0 in there… SOS mode always. But with something like this it would at least allow you to mount externally even through a wall on a ground floor to get better signal. Definitely would be best to be up higher and aimed at a tower. Which like you said would require better and longer cable. But as you showed, the Waveform will still rule them all. So would be up to the user to decide to buy a “upgrade” like the waveform. Great video.
Hi, just dropped in here to say that today 11/16/23, we ordered T Mobile fixed wireless internet service to hopefully replace our poor 10 Mbps DSL wire line service. The rep said we are getting the new Sercomm G4SE modem. It has the Qualcomm modem chip set instead of the Mediatek modem chip set in the Arcadyan G4AR. Don't know if that will make a difference. We are just less than a mile from two different N41 T Mobile towers in almost opposite directions. Will be interesting to see where our best signal comes from and if we need to add the Waveform 4x4 mimo antenna. I don't like putting all our eggs in one basket, (Cell Service and Wireless Internet) with the same carrier, but our only other option was Spectrum, and I would rather not go there.
I have had Spectrum for years and no issues. There mobile service through verizon is top notch. Verizon has far better service than tmobile, and cable internet is far faster than. Cellphone internet. But hey, whatever works for you.
@@insanelywicked873 Hmmm.... Didn't you say your modem gets VERY hot at times and often reboots on its own.... (wink, wink). Of course that only works if you go in the store and if that store only has the new modems in stock now.
Thank you for the information, it changed my mind on the antenna situation, I'll be ordering a Waveform. The one thing that I really needed was seeing your attic installation. Now, I have work to do!
I just got this for testing as well Nate and I agree the external didn't really help. I could see this possibly helping if someone had a cathedral ceiling with those windows up very high and them having the gateway down on a table with the cable going essentially straight up the wall and mounting the antenna there in the window but that's the only niche I can imagine it being helpful in. I did read into the gateway some and discovered the gateway has multiple configurations for its internal antennas. It said if it gets a very positive lock the gateway can switch to an internal directional antenna that faces the back of the gateway. When this happens, the home internet app will change from saying "Omnidirectional" to "Directional" and they claim the signal metrics will improve when this happens, but I haven't been able to replicate it yet as I have pretty poor signal at my home. Could you maybe sit the gateway up on the waveform 4x4 with the back facing the same direction as the waveform and see if it will switch? I'm just brain storming and trying to think of an ideal scenario to make it happen and we know your waveform is lined up well.
I drive a truck and go all over. This is awesome. I was on hwy 93 in Nevada to Twin Falls, ID.. verizon no service. Turn it on and got service. It was a little spotty. But for the most part I had service
Thank you. Very informative. I Just got the T-Mobile internet and I'm experiencing the same thing you're experiencing. I'm doing the 15-day trial and I'm trying to decide whether to keep it or not. I like the price just not the performance. Trying to decide whether to get an antenna like you did. Thank you!
I have the G4SE model T-Mobile 5G Gateway and just wanted to share something. I placed that G4SE on it's side and it went from 2 bars (weak) to 3 bars (Good). No matter how much I moved the Gateway around while it was sitting upright it never got 3 bars. But on it side it is consistent with 3 bars. Would that also be applicable to an external antenna, even the one T-Mobile sells? If it were in the window on it's side compared to perpendicular would that make some difference?
Interesting observation! It is possible that orientation affects signal strength with an external antenna, but there isn't a way to know without trying it.
My signal upstairs is very good but in my basement my 4K projector signal is only showing in 1080p. Would a mesh wifi work or the waveform antenna be better
@howboutdemjets5092 you should put the gateway where it gets the best cellular signal. If that's upstairs and then devices get poor wifi signal from the gateway when they're in the basement then get a wifi mesh setup to improve wifi signal in the basement. This assumes you get the internet speed you want when upstairs/close to the gateway.
Do you know of a way to turn the Wi-Fi off if you’re using another Wi-Fi network in your house? For instance, I’m using a UniFi network and would not like the Wi-Fi broadcasting on this unit
Looking at this after i so called upgraded to this router. Lol. Better coverage house area wise but can only get 2to3 bars anywhere. Old gateway a solid 4. Chatted with tmobile and theyre sending me an antenna for free. Looking forward to the improvement. New Sub.
Question, would it be better to put my gateway upstairs or keep it downstairs in my room? Reason in my room because I’m wired, if upstairs wouldn’t be wired in, & I want best for my gaming PC, currently some days I get 29ms 120-80Download 3-8upload please send help or recommendation l
I live in a rural area. My Gateway sits in the window with the most direct view of the tower, which is not far but is obstructed by many trees. By adding a half-cylinder aluminum foil reflector my signal went from poor to good, and stays there. It gives me around 90 Mbps consistently which is adequate for my needs currently.
Love your show and have learned a lot! I have the original gateway from early 2022. I live in a motorhome. How would you suggest I position/mount the Waveform? Thanks again.
Thanks, good to hear. If you have the Waveform Mini, its omnidirectional so there is no "aiming" but placing it outside would be the best. The QuadPro would require aiming it towards th tower at each campsite. I would probably recommend something like the pepwave 40G which is designed for RV/truck, shown here: ruclips.net/video/89nx10efdxU/видео.html
I need to be 65 ‘ away looking to put it outside. When i run a speed test with my 5g iPhone 13 Pro max i am downloading at 700mbits and 20 up. Will the length of that cable attenuate the signal snd degrade it. My plan was to attach the 4 extender cables on the mimo antenna. Any thoughts?
Antenna cable length and quality is very important. Waveform suggest staying within 30ft but that can be extended somewhat by going to higher quality cable. You are much better off having the gateway closer and running ethernet/wifi to get to where you need to go.
How easy is it to hack these gateways, can anyone pick up a phone take a picture and there in, someone needs to put this to the test because security is what everyone wants. not hackable equipment that is trash. And it's no Comcast modem, at least they have security features, T-Mobile has the money, credit to buy the best technology and they won't, there a problem with customer service and speed is the best but security would be a lot better for everyone's wallets. People need to discuss this with them on social media. Because you can tell them to get new modems or the best gateway but the new CEO sucks. You have a good channel. One of the best 💯
T-Mobile needs an outdoor rated antenna with an integrated modem on POE. You avoid all the RF loss by using long coaxial cables. Of course, its not quite as customer friendly. Most non-tech saavy people expect a modem/router combo from their ISP anymore it seems.
Finally Tmobile has offered me the ARCADYAN TMO-G4AR 5G GATEWAY WHT CPO and the ARCADYAN TMO INTERNET MESH WI-FI WHT My speeds used to be consistently fast over 300 to 400 and 40 mbps up with just the the old gateway. then something happened and I have been contacting them every other week complaining of poor speeds like below 30 mbps down more often than not
They dont let us switch to the modem gateway with the ports so their antenna is worthless to those of us that addedour own ports to our gateway voiding the warranty. Would love to put mine back together and send back for the ported one. But that is not an option.
hello i have tmobile and the waveform mimo 4x4 and it does boost me but my speeds tend to get worse through out the day around 4-12. Should i exchange my 5g router for this new one?
How did you get your hands on one of these gateways? I called customer support and they told me I could only request one due to limited availability, my local store said they don’t even sell them at the stores.
@@bryantgarcia1326 Yes how? I am a rural T-Mobile home internet user. About a month ago my signal was almost non-existent where 3 years before was excellent. T-Mobile says tower congestion which is BS.
Do you know if tmoblie has firmware locked 3rd party antennas? I just got this for myself and have read some stuff and heard from tmoblie representatives that the gateway will only recognize tmoblie antennas?
That's a lie. Any 3rd party antenna works. I've tested many: Waveform Cellular Antennas for T-Mobile and Verizon Home Internet: ruclips.net/p/PL8d9FovK2dNS1HuMabIm8hspYa7nlXpPP
@NaterTater Just to clarify. I am talking about the wifi modem box. I also looked at mine and it does look like yours. But mine came with a swivel stand that clips to the bottom. It's weird how they made it because it seems like if you had cables plugged into it then the swivel stand would block all but maybe one and the power cord.
@NaterTater spoke with TMobile today. They dont offer this new modem and antenna in my area. TMobile also has to put you on a diff plan with this modem. Is there an antenna for the black TMobile modem?
I have the Arcadyan and it’s been giving me problems last few days. I plan on going into the store to get a new modem. Should I demand the new white one or stick with the arkadyan? Any advice?
It's worth going and and trying to swap but the store will only be able to give you what they have in stock. I dont think they have these in stock at stores yet but they mights. ruclips.net/video/r1wlZkPLMpI/видео.html
Great Video. I just picked this up for my Park Model RV that stays stationary, under a 20x40 timber style pavilion, with asphalt shingles. I installed a WeBoost Multi-Room Antenna. This gave me a slight signal improvement on my cellphone. But the ends or connectors are a standard RG-6 style. Will this equipment work with this T-Mobile White Gateway? That’s only if they make an adapter to make the RG-6 connector work. If the Weeboost Multi-Room won’t work, is the Waveform the next best option?
Unfortunately that weboost won't work, you'll ideally want a 4x4 MIMO antenna and yes Waveform's are some of the best external antennas I've tested to date.
Thank you for responding so quickly. I really appreciate it. Friday, I will give it a try to see if an antenna is needed. Cell service alone isn’t good. So, hopefully optimistic.
Please explain what you are doing at the start. Took a while to figure out what you were testing and why ... a cell phone signal booster, not a wifi router... or is wifi the thing you plugged into? . Good review measurement wise.
This video is not a cell phone booster. Its an external antenna for the t-mobile home internet gateway which receives cellular signal and broadcast wifi in the house.
I’ve heard that some low-e coatings on modern windows can interfere with cell signal, also aluminum screens can interfere. Do your windows have either?
Hi Nate, I have an M6 Mi-Fi and an M6 pro Mi-Fi and I have a Verizon Sim in one and a T-Mobile Sim in the other. What antenna would you recommend I use, I swap back-and-forth between the two units sometimes.
I think those have 2 TS-9 ports for an antenna so that means they support a 2x2. If you plan to use them in a mostly stationary location where you know where to point the antenna then I'd go with a Wavefrom 2x2 panel. Use can use code NaterTater for 5% off (cant combine with other sales). www.waveform.com/products/2x2-mimo-panel-kit?variant=39937457291367
Thanks. Just today I bought the gateway antenna from Amazon. I was ready to cancel my order to see if the T-Mobile external antenna was an improvement, but it appears not. Unfortunately. (or fortunately) I live on the edge of a national forest, which is great for nature, but not so hot for cell signals. I get two bars in about 5 Mb per second download. I’m hoping the gateway will get me to 20.

I recently got a tmobile 5g internet... black box... im getting 3 bars at best... at best location speeds vary from 30-50mbps on the low end to 300mbps on the high end. mostly it gets 10-20mbps down except for rare occasions it gets on a download optimized band and i get 1mbps for a short time. Pings are my issue id like to see improvement on. speed test pings are 21-55 which is solid but real world ping times in games and remote computing will mostly be in the 70s-90s which is reasonable but occasionally go up into the 190s. Hey Nater! I ran into an issue with Roku. Roku will not recognize DNS channels 52 to 140. The nine 5 GHz channels supported by Roku devices and TVs are 36, 40, 44, 48, 149, 153, 157, 161, and 165. Some time ago You turned me on to HINT control. That app easily allowed me to change my 5G from Auto to channel 40 on my home internet router. Therefore I am giving you a donation.
Im getting 380 down and 40 up with the older one. No need to change since there is still no way to host my own site or to be able to monitor my security cameras. Bummer. No Im not going to do the hack work arounds. I just want control like I do with my regular provider. Nice to see a new one coming out. Maybe later I'll buy the new one without being on a waiting list.
Finding the T-Mobile antenna to be flaky, Having a hard time getting it to switch to the external antenna despite being located next to the unit which get's a signal easily at least for 4g. I connected all 4 antennas. It did eventually connect to the external antennas, but performance was subpar despite showing and "Excellent" 4g and good 5G. Any tips on this issue?
Would sure like to see you hook your waveform the the AT&T Internet air unit...instructions to do so on their web sight to see the performance difference....just ordered the Periodic 4x4 because my son is struggling to do gaming with Internet Air...I am SO hopeful that it will increase and stabilize both upload speeds and ping/latency...we have little other options in our area...
An update on installing the 4x4 periodic on the Internet Air unit. All went as planned per instructions....used the #2 set of connection points from their instructions after playing around with it ( have a clear sight view of the tower 1.2 miles away) have been able to not necessarily dramatically increase the download speeds, but did increase the upload speeds and a more healthy stable ping allowing for PS5 game play 30-70 ping stable vs 30-250 wild swings we had before. Im getting around 40-150 download and 30 to 75 upload. they claim 40 to 140 without the antenna which was not stable we were seeing upload speeds sometime bellow 1mbps jumping to mabe 20.@@NaterTater
Got the wave form 4x4 and it made huge difference in speed with T-Mobile Hotspot Home Internet. Seeing speeds up to 130mbps. Problem is T-Mobile just drops out completely from time to time. Not sure what to do about this. I think its just the tower can't keep up in our area.
I've got a question, and I'm hoping to find help here. I've got the new T-Mobile gateway you reference in the video. Is it worth it to get the 2x2 Waveform antenna? I cannot afford to depend $400 on the 4x4 antenna at this time.
Hi Nater, I was really interested in your channel. Quick question: How do I turn off wifi on the G4AR ? I can not find any on your video. Since I have my own router, which needs to setup. Thank you.
How did you get the new Gateway? I called a few weeks ago and T-Mobile told me it was not available yet. Is that a review unit? I'm sticking with my Waveform setup. Do you think it is worth getting the T-Mobile Gateway instead of using my Chester Cheetah Gateway? I'm not seeing any advantage at this point in time.
my low E windows block radio waves. the 'windows' are good. is if you have older windows. Mine sits in the master bathroom, up on the the cabinet, there's no windows nearby.
Being a HAM radio operator I can tell you that Height is more important for an antenna. The window 6 feet away from you equipment means nothing. That antenna should come with 50 to 75 feet of coax cable and a rooftop mount. Or an attick mount for those in a HOA.
Height is one factor for sure and I intentionally showed the (lack of) performance with it just 6ft away because that's how the antenna comes from t-mobile. Higher outside though is not always the best if it introduces more interference from other sources and 50+ feet of coax effectively negates the dB gain of the antenna so you need to keep the distance much shorter. SINR is a bigger factor for 5G data throughput than outright signal strength.
Hello Nater Tater! I'm a recent switch from centurylink to tmobile here in Las Vegas, unfortunately the DL speeds have been spotty with the Nokia gateway that was provided for free, would you recommend I switch to a different gateway overall that accepts this antenna vs my Nokia? My current average DL speeds are 15mbps & often cutting out during peak hours
I’m sure he will recommend one of his sponsorships but I can tell you that you probably won’t gain anything . I’ve got magenta max plan and I test speeds all over Las Vegas when I travel there . My Magenta Max plan in an iPhone 14 has barely usable speeds in many places of LasVegas . There is just so much population and so much congestion that even my priority plan lags in the city . Even at the airport next to the tower I have mediocre speeds . I don’t care what you do or what you buy you can’t get past the millions of tourists using the towers 24/7 ….
@romanj7607 unfortunately I have heard from more than on TMHI user complaining about deprioritization specifically in Las Vegas. That means your options are limited. The nokia is very sensitive to location so I'd highly encourage you to mess with gateway placement and orientation. You can also experiment with bringing the gateway outside and high to see if that improves things. If it does than an antenna outside could help.
@nctbgs ouch! I can potentially get commission if people buy products from my links (at the seller's expense, often you/viewers also get a discount) but I don't have any channel sponsors or get paid to make advertisements/push products. In many videos I often buy products/services out of pocket (like everything in this video, I paid MSRP for the tmobile antenna and pay "MSRP" monthly for 7 WISP to do my testing). Sometimes I do get products for free for testing.
@NaterTater thank you for the prompt response! Tmobile offered me a prepaid debit that was extremely generous & is the reason for the switch, but it seems like it's not going to work out, centurylink wasn't blazing fast but I reliably achieved 50mbps w/ fixed payments, cox is the best but only provides fiber internet in certain areas & once their introductory price is up people are often blindsided w/ the exorbitant costs of the service, I guess it comes with living in Las Vegas, oh well, thank you once again!

Great video. Very thorough testing methodology, and very helpful visualization of your results. Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. Very informative. I Just got the T-Mobile internet and I'm experiencing the same thing you're experiencing. I'm doing the 15-day trial and I'm trying to decide whether to keep it or not. I like the price just not the performance. Trying to decide whether to get an antenna like you did. Thank you!
keep trying different spots in the house too. good luck!

@ thanks for the advise. Signal is good upstairs. Will invest in a mesh wifi. Thanks

I live in a rural area. My Gateway sits in the window with the most direct view of the tower, which is not far but is obstructed by many trees.

How did you get the external antenna?
ordered it on tmobile.com
So, you can buy the T-Mobile modem with external ports, and put a different/better antenna two stories up on a roof?
Yes. Check out my other videos with example
T-Mobile needs an outdoor rated antenna with an integrated modem on POE. You avoid all the RF loss by using long coaxial cables. Of course, its not quite as customer friendly. Most non-tech saavy people expect a modem/router combo from their ISP anymore it seems.

Curious if it’s pointing into the house suctioned on a window or it matters at all
at those frequencies, EVERYTHING matters! the antenna MUST be outside to get the proper benefit.
Well its omnidirectional so the pointing doesn't matter but yes outside is certainly better than indoors.
how about using an antenna extension with the tmobile
That can be done but it would only further degrade performance.
So after all the extra stuff you have to buy is it still cheaper than cable.
Yes because cabke is $18k quote to START service!

What do you mean? If you have an external antenna there is no point in a booster. A 4x4 MIMO will outperform a booster.
I thought possibly adding a booster would increase the signal after the antenna receives the signal
@bccicone that does work for things like TV antennas but there arent boosters for a MIMO setup

ruclips.net/video/r1wlZkPLMpI/видео.html absolutely keep your cheetah over any tmobile gateway!
I think for an apples to apples comparision, the device needs to be in the window when testing the internal antenna
my low E windows block radio waves. the 'windows' are good. is if you have older windows.
