- Can't get the external antenna to connect? Want to band lock to N71? Here's some tips and tricks with the T-Mobile 5G Home Internet G4AR and G4SE gateway. -Mobile releases a $99 external 4x4 MIMO Antenna for their G4AR and G4SE gateways with external SMA ports. Antennas can greatly improve signal and internet speed. Lets test out this new antenna vs my tried and true Waveform 4x4 MIMO panel, their 2x2 MIMO panel and the stock T-Mobile 5G Home Internet Arcadyan G4AR gateway. Internet speed tests with ping compared. Lets show you how to band lock and the speed change. See this and more in the video. T-Mobile just release a new gateway with a KEY feature, external antenna ports for easy install. This is the Arcadyan TMOG4AR gateway with a MediaTek T750 modem chipset. It supports numerous 5G and 4G bands including Carrier Aggregation for the potential for huge speeds. Note customers typically don't have a say in which gateway they receive, all 4 are currently being sent to customers. Consider subscribing to the channel or looking below for more content!

Nate: I just wanted to thank you for all your work comparing and testing these home internet units. You are providing a real public service to those who depend on these units for the necessity that is internet access. You explain this sometimes complicated subject calmly and thoroughly so that anyone interested can follow along. I know you reach out to your subscribers who help with testing and my thanks goes out to those people as well. As someone who lives in a rural area, this information is invaluable. I have since moved on to Starlink but my parents are still at the mercy of TMHI and I check in on your videos to see if some aspect of their setup can be improved. Please continue to help more people and know that many are very thankful for your time and research on this. I hope you have a Happy Holiday and a productive and Happy New Year. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks Justin! Glad to hear!
How do you force n41 with the tmobile antenna 4x4 on the g4se?
@XenAqUaYT I'm trying to do the same thing. N71 only 30 mps when it switches to N41 132 mps.
Wow that's crazy, maybe even stupid that you can't choose an external antenna without the signal first. Good that you found a workaround.
I greatly appreciate your continued testing and sharing this info with those of us who need info like this.
Got my 4x4 for my Chester Cheetah and will be testing it out at our new, rural properties next weekend. These videos are a great time saver for me. Keep up the awesome work!
Thank you!
Thanks Nate for all the fine tuning help. I use a Cheetah with an unlimited T-Mobile tablet SIM and have found blocking N41 gives me significant performance consistency and predictability. The Router locks onto some LTE bands and N71. Also my 5G single is week on N41 and strong when using N71, I am using and external Waveform antenna. I don’t qualify for T-Mobile home internet so that’s why I’m using a tablet SIM. I consistently get 200M down and 100M up with my configuration, it’s used as a backup. My Router has dual WAN ports so failover is seamless.
Nice!
You’ve been super helpful. I’ve been wanting to do the cheetah unit, but we already have a T-Mobile gateway. And didn’t want to spend 1000$ on the router and antenna. I finally was able to get tmobile to send me the G4AR. So we will only really have to pick up the antenna. Always had decent up/down speeds. I’d love to see some better ping. Speed tests always show 30’s, but gaming always shows it in the 70-100 range.
did your ping improve? I am pretty much in the same boat. Speed tests show 30ping but when gaming its always at least double that. I was going to try getting a router first as I thought possibly the Nokia 5G21 modem wasn't handling the traffic to multiple devices efficiently (I currently don't have a new router so was using the nokia 5G21 as modem and router and think the wifi may be the culprit of the ping difference).
@@mrgrim800 I have only gotten the tmobile gateway so far. Just getting the new G4AR unit helped enough to get me by. Tests show 30ping but call of duty on my Xbox shows 52-80 depending on time of day. Haven’t had enough money to get the antenna yet.
@@integra167 How did you manage to get T-mobile send you the new router?
@@palak543 I went to a local store and asked about it. They had to sign me up for a new service, and cancel my old one. They also didn’t carry that model in the store at the time. So it shipped to my place in a couple days

Thanks you for all your post. I just received and installed the tmo-g4ar. 4 consistent bars. I placed it on my roof and received 5 consistent bars. I do not have an antenna yet. The sma ports are smaller than standard home coaxial connectors. I do have pictures for you. What size connectors do I need to run from gateway to roof antenna?
Can you do a review of the inseego fx3100 tmobile business gateway
14:38 For anybody wondering about this picture, when you understand what cross polarization means, you'll understand the alignment of the individual antennas in the picture on the right.
Great info!!! Have you and anyone else tested the peplink/pepwave MIMO with the TMO-G4AR gateway router? Thanks Jim
Not that i am aware of. It should work good though.
I use a Peplink Mobility 42G antenna and it works just fine with the TMO-G4AR (and the earlier KVD21 - after a bit of cable tapping surgery)
Set mine up today. Tried swaping 2 and 3 antenna leads and found the recommended 1 2 3 4 sequence works the best as I got 240 down vrs 100 down with the swapped 2 and 3 cables
For the t-mobile antenna the recommendation from tmobile and me is 1234. Its only with the waveform to swap 2 and 3.
@@NaterTater thanks, I have to waveform 4x4 antenna. Will keep on testing.
Nate can you use the Chester cheetah with a regular home internet SIM card and not the business card also can you order the cheetah program for t mobile and just put your sim card into it. Thanks so much for all the information big help.
Yes you can, you'll need to message Chester tech repair to configure some settings first (he does it for free). ruclips.net/video/3belU1bmEh0/видео.html
In my limited testing it seems like carrier aggregation is disabled when G4AR is connected to n41. In other words, it is not capable of aggregating TDD and FDD bands to provider better download and/or upload speed. Have you seen similar results? If it is true, then that's one downside of connecting to n41, in a sense that LTE is merely used as an anchor.
nate the waveform 4x4 will work with the Chester cheetah also do you need special adapters
Yes it works well, no adapters needed. ruclips.net/video/3belU1bmEh0/видео.html
I got the Waveform 4x4 and was wondering if i should get a shorter cable? The kit comes with a pretty long one and im not sure if im losing speeds with that. If so do i contact waveform directly to get custom smaller cables?
Yes you can. It's likely not worth the cost to change. Best to spend time aiming the antenna and finding the best location for it.
@NaterTater Have you figured a way to disable the wifi on the device? I tried to go back on your videos and tried the curl.exe and throught the process you showed and it did seem to get token but it will not export the network settings into the .txt

@@NaterTater Well thats not good hopefully it can figured out in near future thank you!
@@NaterTater I found an app on google store called Hint Control that allows you to controll the wifi. Problem resolved :) Thank you for your content!
Which gateway do you have? G4ar or g4se? Many have been telling me the HINT app doesn't turn off 5ghz anymore. I did a video on it in the past: ruclips.net/video/Qy-f8xfPk4s/видео.html
@@NaterTater I have the white G4AR one. Yea it sucks it only does the 2.4 ghz. But in the long run it does work that was the band messing with my Ubiquity AP. Since the 2.4 band is off on the T-Mobile it has improved on my Ubiquity AP on the tx retries.
T-Mobile REVVL turned out to be the best phone to check where I could get the best signal. It also had options to turn on/off bands to perform fine grain testing. The RSRQ numbers also seem to be stop on. One thing I noticed is that for n41, the RSRP was -117dB on the phone. The G4AR gateway initially showed -115dB in omnidirectional mode and then -108dB in omnidirectional and directional mode. The packet loss in omnidirectional mode was 0 to 30 percent, and directional mode was 40 to 80 percent.
Now, with waveform 4x4, I had to move it place it to avoid n41 due to high packet loss. Have you experienced the same?
Hey Nate. Thanks for the video as always. I have the new G4AR and was wondering if you had a recommendation on the best router (mesh or otherwise) to go with this so that I can disable the wifi on the G4AR (assuming that is still the best route to go). I don't need an external gateway as the G4AR is doing pretty well (I also have the Waveform 4x4 coming). I've heard you talk about your ASUS mesh system and Orbi in other videos but was wondering if you had a recommendation? Lowering ping for gaming would be nice as well. Appreciate the content my man!
Thanks for tuning in! I had a Asus AiMesh setup for many years. I needed an upgrade recently and I considered a new Asus setup as well as many others. The "high end" consumer mesh systems are several hundred $ and I had trouble justifying the cost. I ended up putting together a TP-Link Omada setup (ruclips.net/video/34NZwJh4N84/видео.html) but you could and probably should do a much simpler Omada system. You can get the OC200 (amzn.to/485MTEb), TL-SG2008p (amzn.to/3GQIlpu) and 2x EAP653 (amzn.to/48mMYDi) for about $440 and have a great setup. You can save about 25% by buying the used/renewed ones on amazon too. It has way more features and it can be expanded easily buy just buying a single device (for example I have 9 access points). This is small business grade and simply a better system then even the high end home ones that cost way more.
@@NaterTater Thanks so much for the recommendation and quick reply! I would have never thought of the system you proposed! One question (sorry this isn't my strongest suit), I wouldn't need an additional router with what you recommended? Would the controller allow me to set-up a network that would allow me to disable the G4AR from transmitting wi-fi?
@mikecruise1784 correct you would be using the G4AR as your router actually. I would still encourage you to disable wifi on the G4AR but there isnt a way to turn off the "router" function on it. I did add a tp-link router to mine but that was because I specifically wanted some of the features and combined 6 ISP's together.
@@NaterTater I appreciate all the help! I should have asked this in my previous reply because the reason I was wondering about the router is more due to router settings. To my knowledge T-Mobile won't let you change the DNS server on the G4AR. Would the Omada system you recommended allow me to change DNS, or would I need an actual router for that. Thinking Cloudfare for gaming purposes...
@@mikecruise1784 valid point, I dont think the smart switch allows control of the DNS so you would need a router. You could ditch the smart switch, get a cheap omada router (amzn.to/3TwH7Y0) and then you will need something to power the PoE AP's. you can add a dumb PoE switch (amzn.to/3Tt9g27) to do that. There are tons of options to pick from based on your needs. these are just examples.
What is the speed testing app you use

Thank you, my question is, both G4AR and Waveform antenna support N77 band. But can find almost no info. I have 3000' line of sight with tower but always n41/n71. Any insights?
Good information have t mobil home internet thinking about going with Chester cheetah and waveform 4x4 . Do you think t mobil could cut you off if you do this or have you known anyone that has lost service buy doing this. THANKS BIG HELP KEEP PUTTING OUT GOOD INFORMATION!!!
I have never heard of anyone getting cut off due to that.
I recently lost the N71 band and when I called T-Mobile support, I was told that I couldn"t recieve 5G in my area.
I told the person that I have been receiving 5g for a couple of years and have just recently lost it.
After some trouble shooting on " special equipment I did not have access to" I was informed that I couldn't get 5G.
I still get a very good signal 5g on my iPhone 12 Pro and my other Apple phones I am unable to get any cellular metrics on my Arcadyn router.
Any idea of what may be occurring ?
Call support and have them reset your device maybe that will work.
Do a factory reset with the button on the back
Makes no sense. Get a warranty gateway exchange.
They have virtually no "tools" to help you. Basically all they can do is reset the connection, which has never worked for me. The only thing they can do is fill out a tech request ticket if you can manage to talk them into believing there's a problem with the tower. I got one of the techs to talk to me casually since I used to work for the cellphone tower companies. Our local t mobile corporate store is pretty good about swapping out the gateway.
You can test the gateway by taking it to another tower and back closer to yours and see what it reads
Hey nate, I finally found a G4AR and ordered it, I have the Old white box, the 4g one. Are there any tricks you can recommend for the switch.
You should be able to SIM swap and be good to go. Unless the G4AR you bought (I assume gray market) is blacklisted by tmo.
What if I have a 2nd router hooked up to my gateway (same one as that) do I put my antenna to the gate way or the router?
Put it on the t-mobile gateway
A great video, but I have two questions:
1. Can I use just one external antenna? and,
2. How do you turn off the DHCP server on the Arcadyan G4AR?
1. Yes but it needs to be a 2x2 MIMO at minimum (two cables)
2. Can't
Please explain how to connect a mimo 2x2 antenna. I have 2 cellular cabled, and 2 wifi cables. Thanks
Thanks for all you do, I installed big waveform antenna crossed 2 and 3 to router and back to normal. When I hang t mobile box outside it’s faster than waveform? I
Suggestions??? Thanks
QuadMini or QuadPro? how long of cabling? did you switch the gateway to external antenna selection?
I have 2 two outside yagis. Which antenna ports should I use with the G4AR? Is there a list of the bands each port is associated with?
It's really designed for 4x4
I just got off the phone with T-Mobile support (2nd time) and was told in no uncertain terms that the 4 ports on the back of the G4AR are for Wi-Fi within the house not for tower reception. The first guy told me it didn't matter which ones I used so he must have the same impression. Has anyone disassembled it yet?
@bmorgan99 ha, well support is wrong. Tmobile even sells a celluar antenna for the ports. It aint for wifi.
@@NaterTater Installed a 4x4 yagi mimo setup and tried a second G4AR from T-Mobile:
Good News: wi-fi reception in my yard is much better
Bad News: the modem couldn’t see my tower at all
Went back to my old modem with Infinite Internet: still rockin' (just pricey).
@NaterTater Holy shit. I got a 3rd modem and hooked it up exactly as I did the other two: solid 3 bars and I'm in the 150-200 range. The only difference I see is this modem is a G4SE and the others were G4ARs. I'm guessing the other 2 were just shite.
I asked for the new G4AR Gateway since I have the Arcadyan and T-Mobile Customer Service said they are not available in my area of Southwest North Carolina. Bummer. My Chester Cheetah Gateway vacillates between N71 and N25 Bands depending on time of day. I keep it on NR5G SA. My uploads are pretty terrible on N25 and a bit better (still single digits) on N71. I find if I block N25, it automatically switches to N71 with better ping, download and upload speeds. I use the Waveform 4 x 4. It's one of the best in the business IMHO.
I just got mine today in Fredericksburg, VA!
Nate what is difference between the G4AR and G4SE? I was upgraded to an SE.
@@A-aronTrekn they are just built by different suppliers. Same design.
Why not suction that T-Mobile antenna to the outside of that window?
It's technically only for indoor use.
@@NaterTaterfor a cheaper option though it doesn’t hurt to still test it that way, plus the suction mount they provide is technically a pole mount they just added suction cup to. It would make a decent video to test it that way even if it’s not recommended plus you could test out cable extensions at the same time for a video.
@Blu3ManiC maybe you've seen ruclips.net/video/9WR0lSQldCk/видео.html where I test the antenna a few ways. Adding a extension cable will only degrade the performance.
@@NaterTater yeah I saw that, I actually bought one because of that video even though it doesn’t perform that much better than the gateway and the cable is short I needed something to mount outside in a very short distance compared to the 2x2 I have now from signal plus with super long cables.
it worked out better for me catching outside signal in my house form the 70s that blocks cell signals.
With you being the only one I’ve seen testing this antenna I was just wondering why you didn’t try the other two methods for a video yet.
I have a question can you use any antenna ? Or does it have to be this antenna from t mobile ?
You can use other brands. They do need to be a 4x4 MIMO setup for best 5G performance. Waveform Cellular Antennas for T-Mobile and Verizon Home Internet: ruclips.net/p/PL8d9FovK2dNS1HuMabIm8hspYa7nlXpPP
Question I have the Chester cheetah device is there away when on 5G SA I use band 25 and 71 but sometimes 71 will drop out and it will just aggregate 2 bands of 25 I have a external antenna how do I have it where the primary will stay on 71 and the secondary on 25?
Can't

Hi, I have a Waveform 4x and usually only get .5 - 2 mbps upload. Tower is less than a mile away but there are trees and some elevation changes between here and there that diminish my signal. Was hoping the N71 trick would work but I lose Internet completely when disconnecting everything except cable 2 to port 3 on the Tmobile device. Thoughts or recommendations?
@user-kk9wp1fc5q maybe raise ur antenna higher maybe suspend to a 20ft pole
If elevation is a big issue for u raising it on a pole u can rotate from the ground will get u a better signal and still let u tune it
Just be sure to have a way to secure the direction of the antenna as well as the pole is heavy duty so it won't sway in the air as much giving a more consistent signal
Yes, higher might work and make sure you know which tower you are on and aim it. Also look for towers other directions even if farther away go test their speed.
i just recently got the new tmobile router. bought the waveform mini. i was getting anywhere from 100 to 200 down and like 10 up. at first i wasnt impressed with the waveform mini but then i only hooked up wire 3 only and now every test is 350--380 down and 70-80up
@@joshs1981 awesome, good to know it works with the mini too!
I’ve added the waveform to the G4se and have increased download to 550-600mbps but can’t get my upload much over 7 consistently. Do you have any advice? Thanks
@KrazyKrew-g5w that is a downside to n41 sometimes. I get some help by aiming the attenna based on upload, not download but there is only so much you can do there with a stock gateway. On 3rd party gateways i change the band and 5G mode (SA vs NSA) to find the best performcnce.
@anyone... Which port should Antenna #3 go to on the Arcadian (D, M, M1, M2)? I would guess M1.? Going on B41 has been giving me problems for years.. B71 is OK at ~80 down. Yes, a 3rd party gateway.
What are the best cables for 100, 200,or more feet ?
Ethernet or fiber. You do NOT want to use coax that length for an antenna
What’s the trick if you want n41 instead of n71? My ping or latency and speed is much slower and worse on n71?
the only real trick is getting the n41 signal stronger. Either moving the gateway or adding an antenna. Or 3rd party gateway that can band lock.
Does anyone know if the G4SE has network aggregation like the g4AR?
It does
Thx Nate
You're welcome!
How far are you from the T-mobile tower?
1 mile
Anybody use the cellphone booster? Does it help conventional antenna?

I use my 5g home internet in the car for uber and my windows tablet in car works good
The 90 Degree Adapter's cause Signal and Gain loss! I really hope T-Mobile in the Future will make their Gateway's easier to work with so you don't have to use Adapter's at all! I use a Chester Cheetah SDX75 Gateway/Modem so it doesn't matter to me but I'm not sure why they would design the Gateway like that it's almost like they did it on purpose so people have to buy Adapter's if they wanna be able to use an External Antenna with it. It's easier than having to take the Gateway apart to hookup an External Antenna but the design needs to be better!
@@JoshF151Tech yep!
T mobile is geo locking there modems to the tower closest to the subscribers address. that is unless you pay a higher price for a newer, traveling capable connection

Why bother extra cables and hassel.
Only worth it if you need to improve your signal/speed.
Why bother 5g is not reliable yet. cable and wireless is still the best.@@NaterTater
Why do you promote waveform so much?
Waveform is over priced and the lack of quality of the components in the kits was shocking.
Many more 4x4 antennas available for half the price and they perform so much better.
Do provide a reference for a half price 2x2 (WF is $99) or 4x4 (WF is $199).
I too was also shocked at the quality of the hardware and had no luck getting better speeds with either antenna. In fact, the stainless bolts bound up on me while moving the antenna around. They have been very helpful with customer service, but for the price, I expect better. According to the representative I've been in contact with, my hardware failure made it up to engineering for a discussion on a change of threads (I'm a machinist).
A good external antenna setup will help ping!
