A band of travellers on the first ever filming trip to G-Land. Peter McCabe told us that he jumped straight off the boat and started surfing there by himself. No leg-rope, no checking it out. He came in on the beach at dark and had to follow the one lantern to find the boat.
This bass-heavy track by Band Of Frequencies takes you right back to the vibe. Check out their music here:

1976 what a adventure! Loved the style of the 🎞️ The Editing & Sound Track! "It was Dreamy Perfect!"
Amazing footage and edit! What a era. This is what surf adventure dreams are made of.
Thanks so much @seatopia. It's actually pretty much straight from the camera reels. Dick was obviously so worried about wasting expensive film stock that he buttoned off as soon as the shot was done. So he edited it in-camera in a way. We love it. Thanks for the comment. We agree.
1976 NZ second to last year in High School - all i dreamed of was this.
Like a lot of people, then and still now :)
My first trip to Indonesia was in 1979. I had my 29th birthday in Bali. During my stay in Bali someone told me about the surf camp at Grajagan Bay. It sounded intriguing. It was up for sale and I had the dough at that time. My life sure would have been different had I bought the surf camp. At the time I just didn’t want to be tied to running a camp and dealing with the Indonesian bureaucracy. I enjoyed my stay in Bali. Sailed across the Badung Strait in a prahu to the island of Nusa Lembongan and caught killer waves there in front of the village run by chief Tarsin. On my second trip to Indo in 1981 I made it to the island of Nias and caught lots of great waves at Lagundi Bay before heading back to Sumatra, then Java and finally Bali again. Indo was a good warm up for North Shore action on Oahu which is where I’d head to come December. Lots of great memories. I was very fortunate to have been able to surf all those places.
Thanks for sharing Jim. They sound like beautiful adventures :)
luv luv this but man im so happy im old cause i got to see it ALL in its glory .. u couldn't pay me enough to go back to indo / sumatra especially now
Still some finds out there....gotta look a little further tho. :)
Same. Have it kids.
Started wave riding in1974, finally got to Gland in 91, got it Huge, the old measure, you could fit a double decker bus inside the barrels, so true, Biggest, Thickest, Roundest, Cleanest, Longest Waves I've every ridden, with some of the heavest hold down beating
Had the good fortune & privilege to surf with Aaron Napoleon from Hawaii, the best wave rider I have ever witness
He was doing complete upside down 360 inside barrel riding, surfing the inside face of the falling wall & landing back in the pocket effortlessly, truly out standing surfing, only second to Captain Good Vibes 💪🐷
Epic.
Short and Sweet!
That is one of the late Dave Michel's cheap and cheerful $10/day turtle boat trips there in 76. It was David one of the pioneers of Indo surfing who encouraged me to hot foot it there 50 years ago. Little did we know that cancer would take Dave out less than 10 years out. RIP.
Thanks for the extra story. Love it.
Peter McCabe: Padang-Padang pioneering legend...
So many of us followed in his footsteps!

Or the end of the beginning! :)
Proper adventure
They're still out there!
I recon a tiger could climb that tree / treehouse.
Agreed!
Actual surfing begins at about 2:20. All else is just resting eating, not worth vjdeoing.
