- CSMTA presents "Faerie's Aire and Death Waltz". This "musical piece" (and I use the term lightly) has been considered unplayable, but here is a full-fledged attempt. Resplendant with directions such as "Release the Penguins", "Sell Mute", and "Watch for Slippage", the Aurora division of the Colorado State Music Teacher's Assoc. brings this almost-impossible performance to the stage, to the delight and chagrin of the 2009 State Music Conference attendees.
Finally, an actual performance of this song and not of "U.N. Owen Was Her".
I don't know if they really played the entire piece perfectly, so I looked at the score.
Now I know even less.
My god, it never even occurred to me that people would actually try to *perform* this. I've seen the sheet music posted all over the Internet for years and never once did I actually believe someone would try -- and get damn close to perfecting -- Death Waltz.
All my applause, good sirs/ladies.

You're welcome
Yes, the "duck" was to "duck your head" and then the added duck call was to cover all the bases. The penguins were vaulted (watch the standing group on the left) and hit the glass light on the ceiling. After "releasing the penguins" you'll see me holding my hands to my mouth in horror as the shattered glass fell to the ground in front of the violin. OMG
Remember that Spongebob episode where Squidward wrote down all the sounds he heard into his music? Yeah, I think that's what happened with Faerie's Aire and Death Waltz.
The made a mistake :(
at about 7:10, someone should have sung "hey, hey, hey-o, ho, hey"
Says so on the sheet xD
@BonSprite
This IS death waltz. Some idiot posted the touhou song as "death waltz" and everyone believed it. Now half the internet thinks touhou is death waltz. This is the real death waltz, a song created as a joke. John Stump has *nothing* to do with the touhou song everyone thinks is "death waltz"... it's very irritating. The song everyone THINKS is death walks is an all piano version of a touhou remix of Flandre Scarlet's theme by Cool&create. Ugh.
I'd have to say that the piece was NOT meant to "sound like this" (see nw111's comment below). It wasn't "meant" to be PLAYED, let alone HEARD!!! That was the fun of the attempt.
People who dislike this video can either not read sheet music or mistake the song for the song from Touhou...
So this is (the real) Death Waltz (actually) by John Stump. Or at least some fun elder folks having a good go at it. I've just been browsing through all the UN Owen videos falsely refereed to as Death Waltz, and it's rather annoying.
1) I'm a fan of the UN Owen music, and it's wrong to mis credit it to John and not Zun.
and
2) A fun "composition" as crazy as this deserves to be known properly. It would be great to see more attempts made at it.
It's just generally created needless confusion.
Finally, the actual Death Waltz and not the Cool&Create remix of UN Owen Was Her.
People complaining about the long, unnecessary introduction have obviously never been to a music conference before...
I don't believe this was anything but a humorous "composition" done by the late John Stump. Google his name, and you'll see this and other pieces he created. They are more for the visual jokes on the written page than anything meant to be performed.
@Zfortsniff Yes---the chair WAS balanced on three legs (I believe the sax player did it) and the big release of the penguins (actually, stuffed puffins) happened on a catapult contraption that sent the puffins-acting-as-penguins up into the light fixture, breaking it and sending glass down close to the violin. Probably the most exciting part of the whole business.
This piece distinctly reminds me of warm-up time in a middle school band room.... except it's not as crazy.
Pleeeeeeeease....someone, challenge us and get a musician's group together and try to do this better! We'd welcome it! Believe me......we just proved that an "unplayable piece" was playable, but not sure we really SHOULD have tried it. I think the best part is the intro, for those of you who are musicians and understand the humor. John Stump's score should have been left alone, but who knows...maybe he secretly wished we'd try to play it.
@MsBlablabla123 The annotations are from the actual score. No penguins or cows were harmed in the making of this farce.
Wow the actually played it. A bit slow, but they played it.
Congratulations on a fantastic performance! Took me a while to find it betwixt all the UN Owen impostors.
A literal interpretation of "Faerie's Aire and Death Waltz!" It sounds lovely.
To those of you seeing this for the first time-----read the comments below to understand (maybe) a bit more about what the %$ this is.
It helps to see John Stump's musical score.
I can say, without understatment or exageration, that that was THE MOST EFFING BRILLIANT THING I HAVE EVER SEEN. It has topped Komar & Melamid and Dave Soldier; The Most Unwanted Song. I have been godsmacked...
Soo this is what they call the weird side of youtube.,.
"Blanco had just finished a stunning performance of the La Merusco Concerto Caruso for E flat Chianti."
I choked on my tea. Oh, musical puns.
can someone give me some history on this piece? what's with the penguin jokes?
also, who has the balls to actually play this AND record it in 240p
You sir, are watching elderly people throwing a food fight
Nothing like a little Cro-magnon skinning chant to brighten your day!
Proper credit and less confusion-good! .G*d knows that the Authentic Faeries Air score contains quite enough crafted confusion: with the "removal of cattle from stage", the release of penguins and "all rests are imaginary". Bless you for your true appreciation
0:48 "careful scholarship..." there's a man in a COW SUIT BEHIND YOU.
most legit i've seen yet
It's very brave of you to even attempt this piece. I value that. Though it seemed like you pretty much paused the song whenever you performed one of the required actions. They could have been more smoothly integrated into the note playing. Oh, and I didn't see any penguins. But other than that, thank you for bringing this to the world!
Things get weird when old people act silly.
When they said Duck, I assumed they meant....duck. As in, out of the way.
But they did get the gong duet. So where are the penguins?
@TheMissKirin ------This is nothing to do with touhou....and U.N. Owen is not the originator of this title.
insert peanuts
it's not even a bad song
quite listenable
and the performance is outstanding considering the source material
I'm making this my ringtone.
The finest mockery of twentieths century music I've ever heard
Actually, we did. The saxaphonist leaned his chair back on two legs. The woman (me) who "drove cattle" came back and moonwalked. Yes, I did. You couldn't see my feet, but I do it ala MJ.
I found the score on the floor of my strings room, and was amazed.
it isn't that hard. all you need is 25 fingers and 5 hands
Amazing rendition of a classic score. 6 stars /5
somehow the tempo at play ball didn't seem like 788.
0:00-3:47 introduction part, explaining the source, 3:48 the composition or rather the fruit of deep hatred 8:26 clapping
@316lazaro5150 Lol, it's unplayable period, because it is not a real piece of music. The sheet music is written that way as a joke, like others have commented. Other musicians who can read sheet music and understand music theory would know that because none of it makes any sense. I think your friend was just pulling your leg xP
Brian - go to the end and you'll see the score. "Google" the composer, John Stump, or "Faerie's Aire and Death Waltz" to view the unbelievable directions and notes. It's more of a visual joke than a performed one.
..... *Eye twitch* The music.... IT HAS NO MEANING! *Explodes*
music starts at 3:51
@MsBlablabla123 The annotations are directly from the score. Sorry to kill you.
Don't ever take this down!!
Yeah Go Colorado! Good thing they didn't used "U.N. Owen Was Her?" because I would have been so much fail. But this is boring but win.
Eh, well, besides having real animals on stage, this is pretty accurate considering the piece.
Somewhere, Frank Zappa is giggling.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING I NEED AN ADULT.
Fantastic.
What a train wreck of a piece lol Kudos for getting about halfway through hahaha
Wonderful! Captured the surreal whimsy of the source material beautifully!
lol i'm trying to follow along with my own sheet that my band teacher passed out.
not the easiest thing to do...
99% of the comments in this video have likes! WTF?
love that someone actually tried this.
the death waltz is unplayable for a good reason. Its ear rape!
Yes, Mr. Squid! You speak with a cute observation! it IS (the real) Aire & Death Waltz. - I, too am a fan of the UN Owen music, and I intend to spend some time to get this sorted out. - you are a right-hearted fan
4:24 "rotate embouchures, oil bow here" WTF?
Our band director gave this to us as a joke.... this is hilarious that someone tried to play this.
@avasings4u That's why you use real penguins. They can't fly...
135 people lack a sense of humour.
Release the penguins!! XD
Somewhere....?....is the "shoe horn". It's a bike horn with a shoe attached. Does that count?
If you want to know more about this, please click on the title and read the information.
@Nathanplaincool
Did you see any penguins in this "piano piece" you mention?
That song IS a UN Owen Was Her? remix who someone uploaded with the name death waltz for some crazy reason.
wtf is this
It would be nice to perform this piece in a mental hospital to watch the reactions from the audience there...
@iwrestledabearoncee It says to remove the cattle from stage in the music.
A friend of mine, not really a friend anymore, said that he found out of this piece because a guy he knows that plays guitar can play this. I think my "friend" is a totally moron. What do you guys think? Faerie's Aire and Death Waltz is definately unplayable on the guitar right?
the music starts at 3:55
This is brilliant, I am overjoyed by your dedication to the score. I would have loved to see this performance!
i think its time we all played a game of russian roulette after watching this.
all the old people in the audience must be like 'wtf'
brilliant! I've even shed a tear at some point!
My darkest dreams came to realization. o_o
Oh! A thought just passed me, I bet Frank Zappa would've gotten a kick out of this.
I don't mean to be so spammy, but really I hope you don't take this off of RUclips. All of you should be proud of bringing such a crazy thing like this to life.
i thought this had something to do with touhou lol
lol 7:59
Good cover
Oh my, you caught that one, eh? I was supposed to do it while I did the Moon Walk, after driving off the cattle. My bad.
Brilliant! Bravo! The definitive performance.
My god.
My body was not prepared.
This was freaking magnificent.
@Zfortsniff I believe it was suppose to be balance on two legs. Or so it says on the music. I may be wrong.
Omg, master piece.
most inspirational composition Iv'e ever seen.
Sounds like Zappa. Seriously (and I freakin love Zappa).
everyone is saying its too slow, any of you wanna try it faster? :)
I love this song...and that person's cow hat xD
I must say that the actual score is A LOT more fun than this "performance".
For the love of god, Wadsworth constant!
Oh my goodness this is so hilarious!!! "spam" an indication we follow assiduously.
Hysterical, folks. Well met.
why is the guy wearin a cow hat? o.O
