  • Catherine reviews her mala-knotting technique as taught through countless classes at Nomad Bead Merchants!
    Required materials:
108 beads (8mm used in the video)
1 card of size 10 Griffin nylon (one is sufficient for most 8mm malas; the second thread mentioned in the video is strictly insurance)
3 counter beads (10mm used in the video)
    1 center or guru bead
    1 tassel or charm
Nomad has mala kits available at our website:

Thank you so so much for this video. I bought my mala (blue lapis)when the Jade Buddha was here in South Florida, many years ago, and they broke. I have researched and purchased every thread that they claim will stand up to semi-precious beads. None last very long. Your video is the first and only one I needed to watch. I can, now, restring my mala and know it will last. Thank you, thank you, thank you❣

The whole reason I'm wanting to make my own is because all the commercial ones seem to use nylon, only for the video to suggest nylon as well. Why not natural fibers like hemp, jute, cotton, etc?

Oh my goodness. You’ve done such a beautiful job on these. I’m wishing I had the materials in my craft stash to start right away!
*sighs* I guess I can do the other part and get online and shop for/pick out the supplies. 😊 but, the wait is going to be the death of me. Maybe I’ll practice by making some kind of a mini with whatever I can piece together from my stash! 😂
Thanks for sharing this. You’ve done a lovely job at explaining and demonstrating. ❤ I just stumbled across your page, but not I am a forever subscriber.
    Hugs from Michigan. 🫶🏼

Thank you very much for making this video! I have made my own Mala Beads using your technique and I love how it turned out. I will also be making rosaries using your technique as my old ones were made with too much spaces between the knots since I didn't know that you can use a tweezer to tighten the knots.
