@@Laotzu.Goldbug Yes! Interstingly enough, Uther Pendragon is Arthur's Father and it was rumoured that he would return from another world after receiving a deadly wound to rule over his people once again, just like he returned from Northrend as an undad to rule over Lordaeron. Frostmourne also is similar to Excalibur as both were embed in a rock piedestral.
I think what always gets me about this scene is that Arthas was right, but he was so blinded by rage that he wasn't able to vocalize that there really wasn't any other option. That and the "purity" of Uther leaves him completely unequipped to handle these gray situations.
Not really. In WC3 lore the plague is not spread by the undead but through necromancy or necromantic enchanted objects (including food). Arthas killing off his own subjects indisriminately doesn't impede the Scourge in any notable way and more importantly is what Ner'zhul is counting on as a test.
@@galten7361 I always thought they could've just quarantined the city by just locking the gates and killing anything that leaves but know that I understand more about how sieges go, its extremely likely that a lot of people turned undead would just be able to escape anyways
I believe that this was the Lich King's first influence hiding in plain sight, whispering to Arthas bit by bit and slowly influencing Arthas' ruthlessness into the ways of the Dark to the point where Jaina and Uther were too naive to see that this wasn't something "Arthas" is supposed to say randomly. The Lich King's plan was perfect, in timing and in picking a Champion.
@@galten7361 "the plague is not spread by the undead but through necromancy or necromantic enchanted objects (including food). Arthas killing off his own subjects indisriminately doesn't impede the Scourge in any notable way" I kinda disagree. The people of Stratholme are contaminated hence they WILL turn to undead, there are no way, AFAIK, to prevent it. Therefore even if they do not contaminate other people as the plague spread though necromancy and not from contamination, that's another front to deal with. Indeed, the undead not contaminating other people does not mean they are not a threat, you still have to deal with them. In this case, going further and leaving Stratholme as it is means you leave a small army of undead behind you. Worst thing is that they are undead so they don't depend on a chain of supply. Basicaly, that means there is a small army that can flank you, disturb your own chain of supply, etc. So, granting that my understanding is correct that is there are no way to cure those people, only two options are available : 1° kill them now and move one to the next task 2° don't kill them now but then they will die anyway and you have to deal with a small army behind your back In both scenarios, those people die but in one of them you deal with the threat quickly and with minimum ressources and loss, on the other, you are still facing a threat and will have to spend ressources and time to deal with it and will potentialy suffer many losses. Honestly, I can see how one in his right mind would not choose Arthas' solution.
Arthas reminds me Anakin Skywalker from Star Wars. Both of these characters were highly gifted, emotional, and could sacrifice anything to save others. Both had big fear inside and been manipulated by the evil to join the dark side. And at the same time, good lived inside each one. And both of them found peace before the death. These characters are definitely have much in common.
not just that, I genuinely think Arthas was a far better origin story of Anakin. If you look back at it seriously just considering the events, Arthas's story is quite tragic and it shows the fall of someone who held too much pride in himself despite being genuinely good at the start, because he was too young and too inexperienced to take on these responsibilities and pressure all at once, all of these things that have continuously wounded his pride throughout his hunt for Mal'Ganis.. This is something that if you stop to think about it, could be attributed greatly to his upbringing too, how much he'd been put on a pedestal, especially by his father, with the Wrath of the Lich King intro giving us one of his father's speeches to him when he was probably very young, basically telling him how, he's a gift from the heavens, which only ended up building up that pride in his name and existence and how much now, thinking back about it, he probably is thinking how despite all that has happened, his father was right in a way... He had become extremely powerful and taken his lessons to heart of how to exercise said power, but probably not in the way that his father would have wanted him to. The only thing there I don't like is the timegap between these story points.. Maybe there was some book, but fuck that noise, alternate media filling in these important story beats is never a good thing.

He didnt just abandon his pupil that he must make sure not doing someting stupid he abandoned his future kind at field of battle in anywere else he would be executed and named as traitor in history books
he did the right choice. he tried to lessen the casualities but jaina and uther want to be on high moral griund instead of helping arthas. he needed their support in that moment. but they left him alone.
Arthas did "nothing wrong" at Stratholme. Stratholme is beset by a magically poisoned grain that turns people to undead over time. Arthas is there realizing this. Uthor Pendragon shows up. Arthas: "Uthor. WE MUST MUUUUUUURDER EVERYONE HERE" Uthor: "What." Arthas: "MURDER EVEROYNE!!!!!" Uthor: "Why?" Arthas: "DON'T DEFY ME! DO WHAT YOU ARE TOLD! KILL! KILL! MURDER! STAB!" Uthor: "No." Arthas: "THEN PISS OFF" Uthor heads off. Taking his army with him. Jain looks at this and goes: "Okay Arthas you're acting like a psycho moron, I'm off as well." So he looses, Uthor. Jaina. Uthor's army. He then takes his remaining forces and starts rampaging trough the streets, murdering every sick and also non sick civilian he can find. While ignoring the literal demon who has an army of undead and is also rampaging trough the streets, literally hastening the process of turning people into undead. So to summarize: He immediately seizes on a single solution without ever considering any alternative possibilities or even asking anyone else for advice. He literally fires his PALADIN. You know the holy warrior SPECIALIZED IN FIGHTING UNDEAD? The guy that would be ABSOLUTELY GREAT TO HAVE WITH YOU WHEN FIGHTIN UNDEAD, DEMONS, and a PLAGUE THAT TURNS PEOPLE INTO UNDEAD? The FIRST GUY you'd want to ASK SHIT ABOUT in regards to the UNDEAD CURSED DISEASE RAVAGING TROUGH THE CITY. He takes that guy and he FIRES HIM. He then alienates the MAGE PRODIGY who is his literal closes ally. The person that would be the most useful in figuring out the GODDAMNED MAGIC DISEASE that is ravaging trough the streets. He then proceeds to completely IGNORE THE GODDAMN FUCKING DEAMON in order to deal with the real threat: Low level, barely armed undead zombies and skeletons, and poisoned civilians. People actually looks at the above and they cannot comprehend anything he could have done different. There are large amounts of people who actually go 'Arthas did nothing wrong'. They can't imagine him asking the paladin - the literal anti undead holy warrior that has guided him since childhood - for advice. They can't imagine him even explaining the situation to that same paladin before firing him. They can't imagine him asking the damned mage prodigy for advice before deciding the murder everyone. They can't imagine him suggesting the possibility of identifying the non sick people and evacuating them before killing everybody. They cannot comprehend maybe you know, murdering the deamon and his horde first, as they are the bigger threat and they are literally hastening the progress of the disease and also ensuring anyone not afflicted by the poisoned grain also turn into undead. If Arthas had taking half a minute to explain the situation to Uthor and ask him and Jaina for advice he could have kept his two closest and most powerful allies next to him. And Uthor's knights. Half a fucking minute. If Arthas had asked for advice they could have figured out alternatives or at least actually considered alternatives before leaping on mass murder as the only real solution. If Arthas had attacked the demon army directly instead of running around playing murderhobo they could have bought themselves hours or days in which to save people. If Arthas had managed to actually save Stratholme or parts of it, it would have been a massive blow to the undead army trying to take over the country. Arthas did nothing right at Stratholme.
@@doncoyote68 I agree. Finally someone with common sense. Obviously its a story and all those acts were meant to bring arthas to his ultimate, innevitable destiny of becoming the lich king but his actions would never be justifiable in the real world.
He killed off his subjects which helps the Scourge anyway since they can still raise the corpses or enslave the ghosts if the bodies are burned by survivors (which happened in WC3). The Scourge does not need Stratholme at all by the time Arthas shows up and Mal'ganis is just putting on a show to both test him Arthas and lure Arthas to Northrend.
Notice how Arthas says "They've ALL been infected." Arthas was right, every single citizen inside Stratholme turned into the undead. There was not a single human in there (from there, not including Arthas and his soldiers) that didn't turn. When you play in warcraft 3, every house, every building, everyone Mal'ganis comes across too turns. There was only two options, let them turn and join the ranks of the undead army, or kill them now while they're still human/turning undead. People criticize Arthas a lot for what he did, but he refused to give up and did everything he could to save his land. (Till Frostmourne but that's a whole nother story.)
Jaina was just too pure, and Uther, what a fucking idiot. It's like when a Dad never gives his son what he wants when he's the one working harder at school.
On one hand, you're right. Purging the city was the logical choice. It would be senseless to let them turn into dangerous Scourge, especially since Arthas had just witnessed infected citizenry turn undead and attack the local garrison at Andorhal. On the other hand, rationalizing "evil" acts as being "for the greater good" was exactly what Mal'Ganis and the Lich King wanted Arthas to do. It was the first steps towards corrupting him to become the Lich King's favorite Death Knight. Uther doesn't know the bigger plot regarding the Lich King, but he does understand the downward slide this will trigger in Arthas. "You've just crossed a terrible threshold" indeed. Arthas's willingness to do everything he could to save his people is exactly what doomed his people, because the Lich King understood how easy he could manipulate Arthas that way. Frostmourne was just the final conclusion in a long series of falls, but Stratholme was the first.
Here is the real stinger, though: The scourge came later and raised all the dead people from Stratholme, creating a massive army. So even though Arthas thought he was saving the people and the kingdom, his efforts ended up fueling the scourge even more. That's what really gets me.

The point is that Mal’Ganis made Arthas believe this was the only option. I still have a sneaking suspicion however that the infected grain was impossible to stop at that time in the story to provide some kind of antidote. Were that true, then maybe Uther himself was in the wrong… even after all these years I have never heard of a story once someone became undead or awakened forsaken to recover and come back wholly with their body.

No you're not. He actually did a good thing here. If he hadn't acted Stratholme would have become an undead bastion. Even his enemy praised him for stopping them. It was his comrades Jaina and Uther who abandoned him forcing Arthas to become even more radical. Arthas realized how dire the situation was and was willing to do the necessary evil to save his land. Going to Northrend was a mistake though. He had doomed himself and his entire expedition.

Uther just put his paladin duty over common, practical sense. Besides, he wasn't a prince like Arthas so he didn't feel a weight of responsibility. As for Jaina, note that she didn't protest like Uther and only said that she "can't watch" killings. My bet is she agreed with Arthas' method but hadn't guts to execute it.
Fontaami But think about Uther’s and Jaina’s point of view, Arthas is telling them to purge an entire city of people who don’t even know they’re infected. Uther is shcoked at Arthas how he could consider purging to be the first option in his mind, Uther even points out “There’s got to be some other way” (maybe quarantining the city) but Arthas ignores him and demands Uther follow his command and tries to strip him of his rank just because he refuses. It was a tough choice, and you can’t blame Uther and Jaina not wanting to do so, killing innocents is a dreadful thing, even if it’s for the good of the realm. Arthas may have been right about purging the city to contain the plague, but Arthas also played a role in driving away Uther and Jaina from supporting him in his action.
No Uther just knew what happens to those that are willing to kill (in that case still) innocent people.
Arthas killing off his own subjects indisriminately doesn't impede the Scourge in any notable way"
I kinda disagree.
So, granting that my understanding is correct that is there are no way to cure those people, only two options are available :
1° kill them now and move one to the next task
2° don't kill them now but then they will die anyway and you have to deal with a small army behind your back
In both scenarios, those people die but in one of them you deal with the threat quickly and with minimum ressources and loss, on the other, you are still facing a threat and will have to spend ressources and time to deal with it and will potentialy suffer many losses.
Honestly, I can see how one in his right mind would not choose Arthas' solution.
Dialogue is so god damn amazing
Refunded will never be as perfect as W3ROC was.

@@mahendrakrisnamurti9599 We don't talk about that shithole that is Shadowlands.
not just that, I genuinely think Arthas was a far better origin story of Anakin.
Both are white too. It is funny how white people get away with genocide. It must be white privilege

he did the right choice. he tried to lessen the casualities but jaina and uther want to be on high moral griund instead of helping arthas. he needed their support in that moment. but they left him alone.
Arthas did "nothing wrong" at Stratholme.
Stratholme is beset by a magically poisoned grain that turns people to undead over time.
Arthas is there realizing this.
Uthor Pendragon shows up.
Arthas: "Uthor. WE MUST MUUUUUUURDER EVERYONE HERE"
Uthor: "What."
Arthas: "MURDER EVEROYNE!!!!!"
Uthor: "Why?"
Arthas: "DON'T DEFY ME! DO WHAT YOU ARE TOLD! KILL! KILL! MURDER! STAB!"
Uthor: "No."
Arthas: "THEN PISS OFF"
Uthor heads off. Taking his army with him.
Jain looks at this and goes:
"Okay Arthas you're acting like a psycho moron, I'm off as well."
So he looses, Uthor. Jaina. Uthor's army.
He then takes his remaining forces and starts rampaging trough the streets, murdering every sick and also non sick civilian he can find.
While ignoring the literal demon who has an army of undead and is also rampaging trough the streets, literally hastening the process of turning people into undead.
So to summarize:
He immediately seizes on a single solution without ever considering any alternative possibilities or even asking anyone else for advice.

He killed off his subjects which helps the Scourge anyway since they can still raise the corpses or enslave the ghosts if the bodies are burned by survivors (which happened in WC3). 0:41 transition from paladin Arthas voice to Deathknight Arthas FOR 6 seconds🤣🤣🤣
this one is the most memorable intro, I was sad for Arthas since he has been left alone to fight with the undead once again
Notice how Arthas says "They've ALL been infected."
Arthas was right, every single citizen inside Stratholme turned into the undead.
It's like when a Dad never gives his son what he wants when he's the one working harder at school.
u probably forget that in the aftermath cutsence, u can see normal citizens dumping dead body

Stop being such an Arthas fanboy. He was WRONG, Uther even said "there must be some other way" but Arthas wouldn't listen and just immediately called him a traitor. Arthas was a selfish man
Immagonko except there was no other way, there was no cure. Arthas stopped the undead. Even medhiv acknowledged that “The dead in this land might lie still for the time being”. And the state of stratholme had more to do with arthas arthas becoming a DK and killing his king and finishing off his countrymen.
@@hazzmati the culling was a part of LK manipulation and Arthas surely got hooked on it
Had he not listened to his ego and won't go for the purge the whole LK thing would've been avoided
Arthas did not stopped the undead, he boosted their ranks and Stratholme become a city of the scourge
@@hazzmati all I'm saying LK planned all of this beforehand and knew Arthas would play his role, he knew he had short temper and him being selfish and emotional only helped the LK.
Uther and Jaina did not knew about LK but it's just that gut feeling that tells you that you shouldn't do it, and they turned out to be right
Glad you could make it Uther
Here we go again

Been seeing some weird warcraft cutscenes on yt lately, so I expected for this to have some twist lol
This entire city must be purged!
How can you even consider that!? There's got to be some other way!
Beware, beware! the daughter of the seas!

I should have stopped him. He never would have turned. He'd still be alive...

But arthas was right, if he didnt purge the city the plague would have spread further and gone out of control
It get's you to the dark side, hence why he said: "you crossed a terrible treshold"
Uther is a Paladin per excellance ofc he would try to find another way first, especially if you don't have a clue about the final outcome...
"But arthas was right, if he didnt purge the city the plague would have spread further and gone out of control"
but that did happen in the end... the entire country became the plaguelands.
i think you missed the point of the cutscene.
Yeah, Strathmore turned into such a nice city after purging right? Lol, wake up it's 2019, you're not a kid anymore. Culling was a huge mistake
PURGED!
