      I loved this mission so much as a kid. I destroy all the houses and turn everyone into zombies, then cheat my way to destroy Mal'Ganis (to stop him from interfering.)
      I then fight my way through the undead. It was like a zombie custom map.

    - Glad you could bake it, Uther.
    - Watch your tone with me, boy. You may be the waiter, but I'm still your superior as a chef.
    - As if I could forgetti. Listen, Uther, there's something about the plaguette you should knead. Oh no... It's too late. These peopleroni have all been infectedanana. They may look al dente now, but its a matter of thyme before they turn into the unedible.
    - What?!
    - This entire citrella must be peeled.
    - How can you even cook that? There's got to be some other whey.
    - Damn it, Umami. As your future chef, I order you to broil this city!
    - You are not my chef yet, boyardee. Nor would I obey that command if you were!
    - Then I must consider this an act of seasoning.
    - Seasoning? Have you sauced your mince, Arthas?!
    - Have I? Lord Umami, by my right of succession and the sovereignty of my crown of roast pork, I hereby rehydrate you from your commandard and suspenderoni your pepperoni from service.
    - Arthas, you just can't...
    *Ding*
    - It's done! Those of you who have the will to taste this flan, follow me. The rest of you? Get out of my kitchen.
    - You've just tossed a terrible salad, Arthas.
    - Jaina?
    - I'm sorry, Arthas. I can't watch you cook this.
    it had to be posted i'm sorry

    Is it just me or Jaina's presence would have made this mission easier?
    Her Archmage abilities (Blizzard for killing the Necromancers and Ranged Undead, Summon Water Elemental as a useful Meatshield, Brilliance Aura for the priests and sorceresses and Mass Teleport for quickly reaching to the Houses) are perfect for the objectives.
    Having only Arthas as the only hero made the mission feel quite appropriately dark and lonely.

      Replying to old post but, this mission felt grim indeed. Arthas is all alone, he knows he failed to protect people of Stratholme, and is fighting to in his mind at least save their souls and prevent them from turning into shambling abominations in service of the Scourge. Arthas has seen his kingdom crumble around him, constantly too late to save anyone, Stratholme was just culmination of slow breakdown he experienced during his fight against the Scourge. After that, nothing, save for his own death would prevent him from going after Mal'Ganis, this was the moment that broke him forever and set him on his dark path.
      The mission is relatively straight and linear, there's only two ncp's that drops any loot, rest is just focused on Stratholme, it's grim and unpleasant intentionally.

    I always found Arthas' turn to evil to be one of the best downfalls of any fictional hero. You could always sort of understand his actions even if you couldn't condone them, and he turned to evil willingly. At least until the end of WotLK and Blizzard pulled their Blizzard move and made it evil mind control all along.

      what do you mean he turned evil willingly? He was good(for the most part) until he took Frostmourne which made him evil. He didn't even kill Muradin, a shard of the ice where Frostmourne was stored did that, he didn't know it would happen.
      Sure he did want to delay of his people leaving Northrend, but that was to make sure that Malganis never threatenes Lordaeron ever again.
      There was no reason for him later on to kill his father and level Lordaeron other than the mind control of Ner Zul through Frostmourne.

      One of the reasons I love this mission is the somewhat moral ambiguity. Arthas was trying to save his kingdom, making whatever sacrifices need be. But he also began to unreasonably lash out - charging Uther with treason (using future powers he didn't yet have) simply because he wouldn't help slaughter the city, which the end cinematic suggests was not fully infected. His raging passions begin to show through more than ever, the obsession with Mal'Ganis, the anger and fury he talks about his people dying by his hand instead of Mal'Ganis. It starts to cast Arthas in a less sympathetic way, but his actions aren't wholly unjustified, his goal of saving his kingdom is noble. The gray areas are what I love about WC3 (including Illidan, later). This was some of Blizzard's finest writing

    When I played this level when I was a kid I did not understand the English language. I thought I had to resist Malganes and destroy the living deadhouse. I did the stage dozens of times and did not give up. I even destroyed the entire living mortuary, but I couldn't destroy Malganis's place even with 8 mortar shooters I thought this stage was impossible until I thought, what if you destroyed the houses and killed the people before they turned into a zombie, perhaps I succeed, and in fact I won. (Google translation, I don't speak English yet)

    “That is the good thing about necromancers--we never let anything go to waste.”
    - Gul'dan
    Arthas' solution could not work simply because what's left of every infected killed by him could still be raised as a walking corpse, abomination or even a ghost without a body. If Arthas had a Mana Bomb, like Garrosh Hellscream had for Theramore years later, there would be perhaps nothing left for necromacers to use, but still it would be a very monstrous act, which would only speed up Arthas' descent into madness and evil.

    This scene always comes into mind when ppl characterize Arthas' story as " tragic".Tragedy would imply the ultimate boy scout turning into a mass murderer.But he wasn't that much of a good guy....his first intention was to command Urther to do the dirty work.....not to mention his prideful outbursts throughout the campaign.

    • @TheMrVengeance
      @TheMrVengeance 4 года назад +12

      A tragedy is: _"a play dealing with tragic events and having an unhappy ending, especially one concerning the downfall of the main character."_
      If you read any of the classic tragedies, you'll see that it in no way means the character has to be a 'good guy'at first. In fact, they're often no, hence their downfall.

      People still keep trying to tell me Arthas was good and should be redeemed. Stripping Uther of his command for not wanting to slaughter civilians all you really need to know. The *Lich King* is a cool character, not so much Arthas imo, he's a jackass.

    • @clone3_7
      @clone3_7 2 года назад +2

      @@Lizard1582 Yes, because the other option of leaving the civilians alone and abandoned, while infected at the hand of the scourge is a some much better option... Stupid Arthas! Uther is a great fighter, but his judgement in this scenario is incredibly bad. I doubt Semyon Budyonny, hell even Nikolai Vashugin would make a better decision in this case.

    • @Lizard1582
      @Lizard1582 2 года назад

      @@clone3_7 We can argue about whether or not him executing civilians was the correct thing to do, but my main point was that he was completely irrational and unfair to condemn Uther for not following him. The entire story is Malganis baiting Arthas' emotions into becoming the LK.

    • @clone3_7
      @clone3_7 2 года назад +1

      @@Lizard1582 Tell me, what would any leader do to an officer, who refused to obey his command in a very vital time, during a crisis? They'd be sacked, tried in a court martial or outright executed. If anything Arthas' decision is very kind, especially to the troops, giving them an option to leave. There are many leaders in history, who wouldn't have done such a thing and would have not allowed anyone to leave (infact I cannot even think of one off the top of my head, who would allow their troops to leave, if they do not want to obey a command). If anything Uther should have disobeyed the command to go away. Telling Arthas of that "other way" of his or at the very least offering to guard his rear if anything went south. But no.
      I have never understood this scene (from the perspective of the story, gameplay wise I fully do) is so out of character for both Uther and Jaina. I doubt either of them would ever just abandon Arthas in one of his most desperate moments, but they did. Had they talked to Arthas after the culling they could have prevented him from commiting his first serious mistake, heading out to Northrend.
      They could have stopped him from doing a moral wrong doing (killing the mercenaries), by not recalling the troops of his expedition, but going in with reinforcements to aid him. Which might have stopped him from doing his final error and an arguable moral choice: picking up Frostmourne.
      Arthas is a very good combatant, and a good duelist, but his most important role is being a great (field) commander, he is anything, but a jacka**.
