I had surgery one week ago. Just a trim. Pain began in August. 3 months of PT, an injection that worked for 3 weeks. The pain from the surgery was far less than the pain from the tear. By the way, I’m 70 years old. Wish I would have done it sooner but insurance makes you jump through all the hoops.
Hi, nice video! My MRI shows meniscus posterior meniscotibial insertion partial tearing. Is that the same as posterior root tear that you mentioned in the video to repair?
I'm 70 and have a tear in my knee. I work out with heavy weights and walk 3 days a week @ a 4 mpg pace. My knee burns if I sit and then stand up. Will they fix it, or let it go because of my age? I would like to resume my workout.
I am having a knee arthroscopy with medial meniscus root repair and percutaneous mcl release possible meniscectomy debridement or micro fracture. Can you give me more information on the procedure and the recovery? Do I need to protect my knee more before surgery, like walking on crutches?
Hey doc, hope you all the best. This is Amir, I'm a nurse in Iran, about 2 years ago I was feeling knee pain some days, I didn't take it serious till about 4 months ago, the pain became worse and it was hard for me to even walk properly. MRI showed me the posterior part of left medial meniscus was torn. My question is, if I do the surgery here, and completely recover after months, is it possible for me to run again or maybe continue my amateur career in body building, or it's gonna be difficult to come back? Thanks for your time 🙏🏽
It revealed an anterolateral intermeniscal cyst with radial tear of anterior portion of lateral meniscus. There is also mild Chondromalacia. Should I go for meniscectomy and chondroplasty.
The only time you really need surgery is if you have a complete root tear -then get it repaired. This will restore meniscal function and prevent arthritis. Dont bother with trimming.
I am 66 years old female. I have a complex miniscus tear. I am on a heavier side. I underwent breast cancer surgery last year. Taking letrizole tablet daily. My knee keeps hurting all the time & can't walk much. What treatment you would suggest to me? Waiting for your answer doctor.
I injured my knee 11wks ago. X-ray shows no significant arthritis, or fracture. MRI shows complex meniscus tear, Baker's cyst, bone bruise, loose bodies & tissue edema. My Ortho says my knee is a MESS! I'm in PT and have had a Cortisone shot. The shot is not stopping the pain. I have had locking of the knee w/severe pain. So it shows me the reason why the shot is not working is I have no arthritis pain and the pain is coming from the meniscus tear itself. So we are looking at surgery in my case, especially b/c I also have the loose bodies. I hate this Hellish injury!
Your case sounds familiar like mine, I’m having surgery for it next week, it is an “oblique horizontal tear” on the medial meniscus for my left knee, I tried the best for 8 months, ice and physical therapy but it doesn’t seem to work, my only problem is I’m unable to run without pain. So I’m gonna do it and hope for the best results. I’m 35 and very active and I agree with you, is a hellish injury.
@@killer350dz My fellow sufferer! I am older than you by a lot. I to have tried braces, PT, cortisone shot, ice. I have gained a lot of strength in my legs as I do exercises ea day. But no relief of pain. I did see the surgeon last wk and he is doing surgery on Nov 22. I hear some ppl say it hasn't helped them. I 'm having mechanical symptoms also. Have you had your knee locking? Did you get the shot? Here U have to get the shot or you won't get any surgery. Mine has been 5 mos. When is UR surgery?
@@estelleadamski308 this next Wednesday, I do hvac work, my knee doesn’t lock and I’m able to work 8+ hours a day but at the end of the day my knee feels sore and in pain and it restricts me from many things I was used to do such as running and weight lifting. I didn’t try the cortisone shot or too much physical therapy but it’s been 8 months and it doesn’t seem to heal so I’m gonna have a positive mindset about it and go for the surgery. Good luck for you as well!
@@killer350dz Let me know how the surgery goes. I will be praying. Will U get a spinal? Mine will be general anesthesia. You held out 3 mos longer than me, so UR tough! I've had 3 hrs of electric shots in my R knee. Drove me nuts. My pain is never lower than 5/10 & usually much higher. Yes, we have to be positive about surgery & that it will help us. We might set a new trend! LOL! Mine is 2 mos from today, They had to wait till 3 mos after the cortisone shot. Best
My left need used yo make a little noise and numb sometimes. A month ago i felt pain and went doctor had xray found tear was told to have operation. It was unexpected. I am 46. Now the pain gone. If i dont have operation, will the knee fail earlier than normal as doctor told me. Should i have to have operation?
Hello how long will surgery take?... I've got both meniscus tear on my left knee nd my Ortho Dr. told me in November surgery will take place! but am in alot of pain nd can barely walk using a walker rn. is there any pain relief like pain killers i can get.... mbe hydrocodone or percocet?
Torn meniscus in end of July. End of January still bothered with knee pain while walking and subsequent swelling. I’m doing regular stretching and exercise. How long should I do this before having surgery?
If they just “trim the tear” as you said you had done on your own knee, does that actually help with the instability issue or does it do anything beneficial from cutting that part?? I have a horizontal tear on medial meniscus with zero pain but definite stability and balance issues. What should I do doc???
That is my question, it’s torn, and my knee feels unstable so will the trim help with stabilization of the knee, otherwise why bother? I’m supposed to get surgery in May.
My Dr said at my age of 40 surgery is not recommended and to just do pt. Pt helped a little but I think with time it will eventually mostly recover on its own. The area doesn't get good blood flow so it heals very slowly especially when my age. I do find it interesting that athletes tear theirs, get surgery, and are back out on the court in a couple months. I guess it just sucks to be poor lol.
Menisectomy should be the very last option, probably best off with your injury than surgery. I had it done when I was 19yrs old. I regretted it from the day of the surgery and I will regret it for the rest of my life
I have small tears on both horns of the lateral meniscus for about 8 months waiting would you recommend surgery or physical therapy? Thank you would greatly appreciate it! Also i had similar problems 4 years ago but it healed on its own and now it seems to not heal anymore
I had surgery yesterday for a large meniscus tear and I was told it wouldn't hurt that bad. They lied.I cried for 2hrs after surgery and it's the next day and the pain is really bad.I can't believe they said I could go to work 3- 5 days after.
I am the same age and had the surgery. Regardless of your meniscus being torn or not, it will not prevent arthritis. If its torn and left untouched, you can still get it.
So why get the surgery if you are younger? The one where it is cut out? Is there a bigger chance of scar tissue replacing it or it repairing in some way or is it just cause you have more meniscus to spare?
Younger people get the surgery because they have knee pain that is interfering with their every day lives and activities. Even with some meniscus trimmed, it is still functional.
Yeah so I’m 37, I think I got my meniscus tear approx 6-7 years ago. I used to work in fitness as a freelance trainer and couldn’t afford time off work so I always did things around it. For example running on an incline meant I could run as running flat flared it up. Never squatting below 90°, avoiding dynamic twisting motions, etc. It’s never healed, I’ve had 3 MRIs over time and it’s still there. I had MBST, a non-invasive resonance therapy which didn’t work. Sometimes it hurts if I’m on it most of the day. I can’t kneel properly, but I can manage it as long as I plan what I do. However it has caused mobility issues because a lot of movements require internal rotation of the knee and I can’t do them. But I’m wondering, what are the long term issues if I don’t get surgery? I saw a surgeon once who said because he thinks there would be a lot of scarred tissue he didn’t know if the first surgery would be successful. As a result I deferred having it done. But I wonder at times now, is that a regrettable decision.
@user-cq9jv7jh2k to be fair I’ve only seen a surgeon once and because he said it was 50/50 if I needed anything done I put my head in the sand and hoped the problem would go away. It’s stupid really, I live in the UK and have paid for private health insurance since before my meniscus injury. But because it’s always a rigmarole of hoop jumping with GPs and insurance calling I’ve always just put it off. Would a collagen meniscus or an allograft feel different at all? I’ve never heard of either really, so if I ever do muster up the courage to get it sorted I’ll definitely research both of these and put it to a surgeon if necessary.

If done correctly, PRP can provide significant pain relief, it will very likely not heal the meniscus, but the knee might be painless
