I agree! I injured my knee 8 wks ago. MRI shows a medial complex meniscus tear, a Baker's Cyst & a bone bruise. It's been a nightmare, and, seems like there is no solution at all! My Ortho hasn't decided yet on surgery. Will start PT in 2 wks. Extreme pain.
Yes, it’s very debilitating and depressing. My doctor said I tore my meniscus last year unbeknownst to me. I thought it was just arthritis. Now I’m supposed to have surgery next week 🤦♀️. Wishing all a speedy recovery from this nightmare.
ive had it now 1.5 weeks and im climbing on my walls .. have barely been out cause it hurts and scary despite crutches. im only 34 and i feel disabled and sad
Please if you read this and HAVE KNEE PROBLEMS. Take you time to heal and let them cheked. I was a big sport guy, aome times 2x per day. I did al kind of sports and after some knee pain after an accident i was like it will be okay. I forced it to much. Now 4 operations later: 24 years old, not allowed to run, jump, deep squat, pulling on the feet or leg , no long bicycle trips or bmx. Daily pain, waking up with pain, can't stand long , can't walk long. I am just written off, also lost my job (was working on the construction site). And now everyday on pain killers for the rest for my life, to just have "acceptable pain" . So please take rest and let it checked, everything i liked to do (also my work) is just gone.
💔🥺I am really sorry for that, I hope you keep up doing other things you love. Your comment herts me. I have a mixod in medial meniscus since I was 18 and will be checking again with a specialist to make a treatment plan now I am 20 . Get well and be safe 🕊
So sorry to hear your story. And thank you so much for the sharing. I'm age 74. Just got big inflammation on my right knee. Couldn't sleep. Couldn't move. Now it's 40 days past. Looks like the inflammation had gone. I can move now. But why 3 doctors suggested me to do replacement? One doctor suggested me to have PRP . I'm still doing rehab exercises every day. I wonder do I really need surgery?
@@eventhorizon3095damn bro i am 21 but tore my meniscus last year.. can’t bend or squat for shit still, i was recommended for surgery and went to the surgery room and they suggested physical therapy, i did that for a bit but around the time i was going i had lost my job and insurance as well, and the doctor was also sending me mail abt me coming back to get surgery as well .. anyways, the financial situation is all well now and i have insurance. the pain is still here however. do u suggest surgery in general for it ?
The resistance band exercises at 11:15min was a gamechanger for me. I had gone to a chiropractor, physiotherapist, had x-rays of knee was told torn meniscus, had acupuncture at left knee, put castor oil packs, fresh ginger packs, etc. but the paint persisted especially working 8 hours at a desk then standing up with lots left knee pain, same for driving - sleeping was the only relief. The chiro was recommending anti-inflammatory medication and said I should visit an orthopedic surgeon, etc. Until I spent a few bucks on the rubber resistance bands - noticeable reduction in pain and overall wellbeing around left knee. I am able to actually walk at my regular pace. Every hour I do 5 mins of resistance band exercises on each leg and I feel much better the past few days mobility is returned to comfortable though I have not started any high intensity like jump rope, star jumps, burpees, etc.
I am in my late 40’s and had surgery to remove part of my degenerative, torn meniscus about three years ago… And felt pain literally one year later to almost the day. It feels better after a while and then I step wrong or wear dress shoes and it begins to hurt again for at least a week. I can only wear tennis shoes with thick soles. Had an MRI one year later to find that I tore my meniscus again. I am trying to avoid surgery and following the leg strengthening techniques. Praying that it works.
It definitely worked! I do wear really good tennis shoes and through physical therapy like this and God’s provision…I have been pain free for about 2 1/2 weeks. 🙏🏻
You are young. Anyone ever suggest you to get PRP ? I'm 74. Same problem now. Trying not to have surgery or replacement. But why 3 doctors suggest surgery n replacement?
When I tore my meniscus 20 years ago the orthopedic explained that since there is little blood flow to the meniscus, healing would be minimal. I ended up having a medial meniscectomy and it bought me 17 years of pain free activity. It’s mostly bone on bone now, but I am able to train hard (and smart) without pain. I will add that when I had the 🎉tear, it was significant enough that it got to the point where it greatly interfered with my knee function.
Did the surgery give you better knee function as well? I'm in that position now - pain has lessened over the months but diminished function. Did you have a popliteal cyst along with it?
Know it’s been a while since your injury, but what symptoms did you experience with the torn medial meniscus? I have a suspected tear but not confirmed yet. Tore my ACL 25 years ago and recently started to develop anterior knee pain after running and squatting. Don’t have any locking, clicking etc but more acute pain, and some knee stiffness. Are you still able to run, how far off from knee replacement? I’m 47 male BTW and still very active with skiing, hiking and cycling. Thanks!
@@jegrand Mine was self-imposed 🙄. I was doing cardio kickboxing at that time. As I kept attempting to increase my kick height I didn’t realize the torque I was putting on my knee. The damage evidently occurred slowly . It started with intermittent pain in the back of my knee and gradually increased to the point where it was interfering with my normal functioning. At that time, my primary doc referred me to a PT. It obviously didn’t help and then I went to a knee orthopedic who suspected a torn meniscus and an MRI confirmed it. It was severe enough that he said it was probably folding under causing more pain and incapacity. I had the surgery and did my own rehab, basically walking on a treadmill for 6 weeks. I’d say it was about a year until it felt totally normal. As I said above, it gave me 17 years (10 is more typical) before arthritis started to set in as determined by x-rays at that time. I don’t know how long it will go before I may need to try PRP or some treatment to help keep me active. I do want to avoid a knee replacement if at all possible as my understanding is it’s not the best option in order to remain active athletically. Oh, I don’t run anymore and gave up hiking as we did steep, long hikes and the knee over toe did not make the knee happy. I am 67. Hope this helps !😊
Thanks for sharing your story. How long after you knew it was a meniscus tear did you have a meniscectomy? Also, how are you not in pain at this point, since you mentioned it's mostly bone-on-bone now?
@ I want to say about 10 months. I didn’t know it was a meniscus tear until it got severe enough to interfere with my daily functioning. Initially, my PCP sent me to physical therapy, which, obviously did nothing. After that, I was approved to go to an orthopedic, who diagnosed a medial meniscal tear, which was confirmed by an MRI followed by surgery. Complete recovery took me about a year. I was working out, but I could feel it until after about 12 months. After that, I had no issues for 17 years, but being physically active is why I think I did not have pain. From what I understand, you start to see arthritic changes about 10+ years post surgery. The orthopedics were impressed that I got 17 years pain-free. Since I posted this 7months ago, I have had some further degeneration/injury in the knee and have been rehabbing it for the last five months. Mostly back to normal, but I can tell that the joint is not as stable. Consequently, I have made some more modifications in my training to continue strengthening the surrounding tissues while not exacerbating the degeneration/potential joint replacement. A fact of life that I am learning to live with.
"Hurt does not equal harm." That was my biggest takeaway from this video. My wife and I are regular walkers and I have been unsure how much walking I should do, given the low level pain that I experience since my meniscus tear. This one tip will help me keep my activity levels up without so much worry. And yes, I will monitor afterwards to see if there are any lasting effects from the walk and if so cut back. Thanks for the information.
I injured my meniscus whilst running, approximately 2 1/2 years ago. X-rays and an MRI later, showed it was torn, but apparently not bad enough to operate on. Even after this amount of time, I struggle with pain, swelling and discomfort. Thank you for this video✨
My medial meniscus has a tear but I refuse to get a arthroscopy for partial medial meniscectomy. I’ve seen many physicians and physical therapist say tenor avoid any surgery if possible since it’s possible that osteoarthritis would start 5-10 yrs after the procedure. I’m trying to avoid anything that will cause me to need a knees replacement. I’ve seen my mother get a replacement on each knee and it’s a rough road to living normal. She has to constantly exercise the knee because of scar tissue stiffening and swelling still persists.
@dleonf2832 Thank you for sharing. I'm 74 n just got menicuis tear. Swelling. Inflammation. But after 45 days. Finally. I can move my knee. Doing rehab excersise everyday. Trying not to have surgery or replacement. But why 3 doctors suggested me to have replacement?
I joined the Y and did walking and mild knee exercises in the pool, rest and far infared heating pad and fascia blaster to increase blood flow and things have healed. The only issue I have is it looks like I have a medial meniscus cyst.
Thank you for going beyond the doom and gloom and telling us what we CAN do! I love your message of hope and encouragement and POSSIBILITIES! I was diagnosed with multiple meniscus and ligament tears, burst Baker’s cyst and stage 2-4 osteoarthritis. Summer of 2020 I was hit hard from the side by a wave while bodyboarding and could barely walk. I was active so thought I just needed to give it a bit of rest. My mom’s health started to really decline so I focused most of my energy there and never had my knees checked. After my mom passed that December I fell into grief and depression. My husband bought us e-mountain bikes that following Spring to help me get active again. We started MTBing about 2-3 days a week. I got stronger and felt great. Late summer 2022 my husband quit biking because he was experiencing numbness in his hands. I quit too. I continued to hike but was no longer bodyboarding. After an active vacation with friends and a vigorous hike with my husband my knee “blew up”. Seemed completely out of the blue. I had X-rays, MRI and sonogram all to confirm the mess that I never knew existed. I’m 68 YO, 5’5”, 118 lbs. I’ve always been active but have had traumatic injuries. At almost 19 I was broadsided by a car as a passenger on a motorcycle. The impact site was my left leg. The compound fracture took 2” from my leg. So 50 years with only a 1 1/4” lift likely contributed to muscle imbalance and osteoarthritis. Note: 1 1/4” is the max I can add to a flat hiking boot and still be able to walk. I had many X-rays that showed bone on bone in my ankle over the years. I had pain from time to time and would have to be on crutches but better that the prognosis given to me that I’d be in a wheelchair by 30.👍🏻 I snow skied, water skied, cycled, weight trained, hiked, kayaked, body-boarded even standup paddled. I did not let injuries stop me from living an active life. I even built a house at 30-34, climbing ladders, swinging a hammer. I went vegan in 2004 and haven’t had ankle pain since. I have tracked food intake recently and realize I’m very deficient in protein so have consciously added sources, including some salmon, to my diet especially during rehab. My left knee responded well to PT and stationary bike at home. I did have some fluid drained as it was not reducing and my entire leg was filled which made PT limited. Left knee responded well to PT but right knee gave out. I’m back to PT to try first before more X-rays, etc. Doctor and PT believe it’s meniscus tear and OA. I believe it involves agitated ligaments as the pain radiates from low back to foot…IT band. If I don’t experience significant positive shifts after one month I will go for pictures. Best route for healing from any injury is diagnosis, education and understanding, patience, clean-eating, perseverance. I’ve yammered on here because people need to take control of their health and seek professionals that will help them to stay active and engaged. Trust your gut, ask questions and educate yourself, and surround yourself with active healthy people. Do the work to improve your physical and mental health and live a life that inspires others to do the same!💪🏻💜
I noticed he didn’t mention wearing a knee brace. I suffered a tear of the medial meniscus a month and half ago. The swelling left and my only pain is when I bend my left knee to try crossing my leg or squatting so I avoid doing both. I’ve also purchased a sports knee brace to wear when doing something like mowing the lawn. I’m a league bowler and bowls in city/state tournaments also plays in tennis leagues. This injury has ceased my activities. The doc said no bowling for a while. My orthopedic said the brace would stabilize the knee while doing light activities. He also said that if there’s no improvement in 3 months I may need an arthroscopy which I’m trying to avoid. I heard that arthroscopy surgery of the meniscus leads to osteoarthritis in about 5-10 yrs after the procedure.
Thanks for a very informative video. I recently injured my meniscus It is nasty and debilitating. Simple tasks are no longer easy Here is hoping it will heal up well. But I’m fearful my knee may never be the same again. All the best to all who suffer from this. Hope you all heal
Please check out kneesovertoesguy , I had the same injury and can squat 135 lb to full depth with no pain , but please take it slow and there are many levels to choose from where you don't have to put a lot of pressure on your injury . I am a very active 71 y/o woman, and have to remember I have 71 y/o body parts, lol. I had an MRI a couple weeks ago that confirmed a medial meniscus tear, along with "jumpers knee" tendinosis. I believe my injury occurred about 8 weeks ago, (box jumping? Broad Jumping? who knows )but just kept pushing through it until I was unable to walk without significant pain or be able to sleep at night, then went to be seen. Since then I have taken a hiatus from my usual gym activities/classes and have just stuck to gentle spinning and walking, avoiding any twisting motion, lunges or squats. At this point all my walking pain is gone, sleeping well, am off NSAIDS, and am hopeful things will continue to improve. I would love to get back to my usual gym routines but may have to forgo the jumping activities. Would like to avoid injections and surgery. This video was so helpful and encouraging. Thank you.
Very useful video. Covers all aspects of the issue and how to think about the next steps. And love that you are recording this as you walk through a beautiful country side. Thank you
Going through this in both knees. I don’t have health insurance right now as I can’t afford it yet but I have extensive knowledge in exercise so using these videos will hopefully help me heal myself
@@PavelMartinov-me8ep I still have problems bending my knee but no problem in straightening. What helped me most so far are three things: improving posture while standing and sitting, losing weight and resistance exercises.

Great video, on Monday the 1st on February 2024, I finally got to meet my surgeon for the horizontal medial meniscus tear which occurred on June 2022, National health services in Scotland are crumbling, I've been told that my surgery will be this April. It's been tough, nearly 2 years will have passed from injury to surgery, I will keep this video in mind post surgery. Love from Scotland.
I was struggling for 6 months this year, I’ve been extreme snowshoeing for 3 winters now, also heavy leg workouts, aggressive squash. Like he said keep the parts of the legs strong, I started doing dead lifts, and hip thrust, also kept doing leg curls and calve raises, that’s all I could do, until recently. I’ve been cold showering for 6 weeks now, and I feel that has helped me a lot, I also ride bike a lot. Yesterday I did leg extensions for the first time in months, lunges a week ago, I am really positive about the recovery and feel I will be Ready for snowshoeing this winter, but there won’t be any big jumps. Loved the contact tonight, presented really well.Cheers mate, look forward to more.

Great video, thank you, super helpful. Probably the best simple straight forward video about meniscus injury, with common sense advices. Really appreciated.
I appreciate your insights here. I’m in my later 40s and injured my knee surfing 8 weeks ago. I have never had a knee injury (aside from patellar tendinitis) so this has really been an experience. I came down hard on the ocean floor with my let fully extended (thought it was deeper) and jammed my knee. Mild pain at the time and was able to surf for another 30 mins. Walking to the car I could tell something wasn’t right. That evening I had some internal swelling and tightness. The pain has never been very bad, just the tightness and weakness. I iced and rested for 2 weeks but it didn’t seem to fully improve. It’s been very frustrating. I wear a knee brace and try to limit activity. Saw an ortho doc last week and had an X-ray (was fine) and have an MRI this week. They think it’s a meniscus injury and possibly MCL. I can’t believe it’s been 8 weeks and it’s healed to little. I’m open to surgery if recommended but I’ll try PT as well. I just really want to be active again. I’m an avid tennis player and surfer. These 8 weeks have been long and frustrating.
I feel your pain my friend, I train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and was training extra hard, in prep for my first competition. Halfway through a session I went to stand up, and couldn’t. My knee was locked. For three weeks
With the situation of healthcare in the UK, I have been waiting ever since. 12 hours in the ER. An MRI six weeks later and now have an appointment at a fracture clinic two months from the MRI scan, with no actual word on the results of my MRI
@@AlexBrown-xe4ut ahh, sorry to hear of your troubles. Here in the states our access to healthcare and services various greatly from person to person depending on income and profession. I happen to have affordable good healthcare now but haven’t always. At any rate I reviewed my MRI results a few days ago and I have two small meniscus tears with “Meniscus fragment displaced vertically”. The doc said I will likely need surgery due to the fragments being flipped up. He said I could try physical therapy but thinks I’ll be back for surgery. I may try therapy first but I’m close to 10 weeks since the injury and I’m not close to 100%.. still feels weak, tight, still have some fluid build up, and pain if I do any twisting motions. As far as surgeries go this one is not too bad at least. Best of luck to you.
@@AlexBrown-xe4ut I’m U.K. as well, lifelong MMA, boxing, wrestling etc etc and now 49:years old, daily gym goer, still do 12 rounds of boxing 4 times a week but.......now have a torn MCL kicking a bag after 35 years of it. It started with weeks off due to perineal tendinitis (pain in outer foot). I rested up and got better then went straight to kicking a heavy bag like I used to, and went straight into MCL tear. It’s been 2 months now and tbh I’m just resting it up and seeing it out. Don’t bother with the NHS - RUclips and google is honestly more effective for the average Intelligence person.
I have had a torn meniscus for 4 years. This is the best video I have come across since then: good explanations, helpful recommendations. The key is patience. Mine acts up every few weeks or months and then takes 5-14 days to settle down, but (so far) settle down it always does. I suspect it work differently for everyone. It's a frustrating injury, but it isn't the worst that can happen either.
Have you identified any specific activities causing it to flare up? I’m experiencing the same issue past year, just had an MRI to confirm, awaiting the results. Have you looked into alternatives to surgery?
@@jegrand I never had surgery. Even my orthopedic surgeon recommended against it. Kneeling down and putting weight on it is bad. Avoid! A few weeks ago I had to walk across trampolines to corral my son: BIG mistake. But it's back to normal now. I'd say avoid lateral movement as much as possible. Weight only from directly above.
@@andreassobisch1912 thanks for the message! What exercises, weight and aerobic, do you feel most comfortable with? When it flares up what are your symptoms, any locking or catching?

This has been the most helpful video I have found on knee pain on the internet. You have such a great way of explaining things. Thank you so much for making this video! It has helped me tremendously!
Burk, thanks for all that you shared ! I look forward to hearing more. My MRI showed a lateral tear and have had a Manual PT help me sort through the meniscus tear; I am at the gym nearly 3 times a week, and would like more, but have my own mats that I use at home. While at the gym I do use the recumbent bike, the olliptical bike, as well as some of the machines. I also do squats with a 15 lb wt. and stretches; at home I do "bridges" , "tailgate swing"for about 15-30 min. when I can. I like your approaches, and look forward to learning more.
Very good. Clear, compassionate and as positive in the circumstances. I have a tiny tear which came from nowhere six months ago. I wear a knee brace a lot of the time and walk 4/5000 steps a day. I had a cortisone injection some weeks ago, but it didn’t seem to change things. Seems to be the long game and patience. I’m 69 yrs.
Excellent advice. I've been about 10 months so far doing rehab type stuff - a lot of biking, yoga & walking. Will start gentle jogging soon. I've taken this long as I'm in this for the long haul & want to get it right. I'm super happy with my progress & I'd say I'm 90% of the way there. I'll keep doing the yoga & walking even after full recovery as a maintenance regime. I want to heal without surgery as surgery is not the panacea some think it is. You only get one set of knees, look after them & they'll look after you. Good luck to all of those with meniscus issues. Patience is vital imho.
@@nelliarnaut2086 Good for me. Not jogging yet as I got injured on my mountain bike but my knee's good. From what I understand a trim is not good for future mobility but some docs can repair meniscus with sutchas. I've not had a scan so not sure of the severity of my injury.
A very informative video. My complex tear (horizontal from horn to root & radial) has not healed in 2 years but I still do a 1 hour walk to & from work 4 times a week & ride a bike in my spare time.

This has been really useful! I tore my meniscus about 5 months ago. Could barely walk/stand without unbearable pain for at least 4 and a half months. Docs saying I will need surgery but currently the pain has gone but the only problem I’m still facing is a popping in my knee with every step. Not sure if I want to go through with surgery based on what many people have posted here!
I had the surgery 9/1/23. The pain isn’t as bad and I feel I can bend my knee a little more straight once it’s lifted and at a 90 degree angle. They unfolded the flap and shaved some meniscus down. If it’s on the inside it usually won’t heal. If it’s on the outside has greater blood supply. Then should heal. Surgery can help but there are risks involved.
@@NewBeganningsAgain where was the location of your tear? one doc told me it's inside, another told me he won't be 100% sure til he gets in w/ a camera but he sees it inside and outside so he advises shaving plus suture :/
@@hanahlee9520first they will scope it and check it with a camera then figure what kind of surgeries they need to do. Mine was in the medial area in the inside of my knee. They said this is where it heals slowly and may never heal at all. It’s been 4 months and I still can’t bend my knee without lifting it.
Why is it painful? Thank you for this valuable information. One bit of advice from yoga is that one must listen to one's body. Incredibly, in one yoga exercise I was doing, where I bent the knee to sit on my heels, my knee strained and hurt---and I kept on doing it until a few days ago. Also I was doing twists standing up in another yoga exercise and I have stopped that as well. My knee hurts, but it doesn't hurt when I walk! I also quit running on the jogging machine and just walk now. I am back to swimming and doing the butterfly can make the pain come back, but the crawl works just fine. Again, I am letting my body show me the way to pain-free excercising. In yoga, the first thing an instructor will say when you say you have a problem is this: "Have you visualized it being better?" I visualize my knee getting better every day too.
First time I’ve ever had this issue. A & E trip yesterday with severe pain on standing. This is by far the most useful insight into this injury. Hoping it won’t be too long before pain and difficulty on weight bearing and walking go. 🤞🏼
@@marvelolabode9085 - it’s actually been better than I thought it would be. Just try and rest it as much as possible, support with pillow nighttime. I was diagnosed with a medieval meniscus tear, not sure how I have been able to cycle, dance, walk up stairs, carry 5 gallon water jugs, maybe I should slow down for recovery to be quicker😂😂😂going on 3 months with a slight pinch at times. I was stubborn thinking it was runners knee. Finally decided to get an mri last week, and sure enough it was a tear and I believe I read a little fluid buildup

I found that for a medial meniscus tear focusing on pushing off with your big toe while walking helps put less stress on the tear. Arch supports could help reduce the twisting of the knee joint taking stress off the tear too.
This video was very beneficial to me! I had a bad tear in my right meniscus many years ago and just a few days ago I torn my left one really badly. I'm familiar with the process and what I'll need to do, but seeing this video was great. Thank you!

Recommend demanding MRI early, my WC doc made me wait 5 months in even though adjuster said they would authorize, I feel my knee was damaged more because of it. He keot saying just keep doing what you normally do. Well, I normally do more than most. Mountains, river SUP, hike run around on boulders, swim upstream, you name it I have done it...basketball. Not a runner, although was in high school. Anyhoo, this has almost ruined my whole ability for health, well being, work and my active modes.

Thx for watching! The medial is more commonly injured because of its close connection to the medial collateral ligament while the lateral meniscus has more motion and is less prone to injury. As far as worseness, severity varies widely and is hard to predict, I've seen more medial than lateral injuries, but not by a huge margin. Good luck and speedy recovery!
Tore mine badly so that I couldn’t even bend my knee for 4 months I was told to have an operation to shave some of it away but was advised by an elderly friend who was a nurse during world war 2 dealing with casualties and she told me to strap it up for 6 months. I took her advice and it eventually healed - 28 years later my knee is fine and allows me to play 3 rounds of golf a week walking not in a buggy! It has only bothered me once when I cycled so had to give that up but after nearly 30 years I think I took the right advice.
@@zobopromoinc.3879 Hi what she advised me was to just use a crepe bandage wrapped reasonably tightly (not to act like a tourniquet 😬) and I kept it bound for a few months and resisted vigorous exercise and for me it worked but I suppose everyone is different? Mine was quite a bad tear and I couldn’t initially bend the knee at all for weeks and the doc wanted to operate to “trim” the meniscus but this worked for me. 👍
It better heal. I don’t have a choice. I cannot afford surgery. I do not need physical therapy because I can’t afford that either. I have to do this myself whatever it takes however, long it takes I will get my knee to feel better meniscus tear sucks especially at 63 but there’s nothing I can do. I am not going to let anyone touch me. I am not going to the doctor. It will resolve itself or it won’t.
I've got a lateral bucket handle meniscus tear according to the mri. Dr said to fo an arthroscopic menistectomy, I didn't but I carried on with a physical therapist Its now 2months. Fortunately I only had excruciating pain when it happened. I just heard a loud snap, no swelling, no bruising, just pain. Couldn't apply a cold pack. I took 1 anti-inflammatory n 1 pain killer. Then was hopping around with the other leg to go bathroom etc. Had to sit in shower Couldn't stand for long period 5 to 10mins was too much Now I can stand for longer periods. The only thing is I'm scared to bend my knee when I walk I have to remind myself it's ok to bend, but slowwwly. I can't walk fast though. My knee extension has also improved. Not sure if I must do the op Thank you for an awesome video .
I would recommend going to a swimming pool. I have ACL rupture and RIP/RAMP lesions on both of menicus. In the water you weight significantly less due to buoyancy. I generally grab a line rope with a hand and move injured leg forward and backward (like cycling bicycle)., and side movement. Avoid rotating tibia at all cost. I drink 2 times a day hidrolized Collagen in powder. Also at least 30 min before training I drink Creatine for rapid muscle mass recovery. I'm also taking multivitamins, and for pain and anti-inflammatory I drink 75mg pills of diclofenac sodium and 100mg of aspirin (I developed Sudeck syndrome which is all but gone now). I recovered flexing in excess of 120° and extension of arround 5°. I still feel some numbnes and stiffness in the knee joint, but when I excersise in the water level of discomfort reduces significantly. I injured leg in february, started training in August 15th till now every day and it's getting better. Taking Collagen is crucial. I achieved in 25 days so much progress, but I will give myself at least another year to be sure that I'm healed without surgery (which I want avoid at all costs). Good luck
Incredibly helpful. You provide some great context so we have a bit understanding of what we’re dealing with. I applied the special examples you give as well.
Answer please, I would so appreciate it....I am 73 year old woman, good health. 4 years ago going down outdoor stairs to go for a walk., felt something go wrong on my walk. Felt a medial knee pain feel I had never felt before..... went to a knee doc, he did cortisone shot, later syn visc shots...I had joint space, but not too much on the XRAYS....I asked for an MRI but he said they wouldn't show him anything. He told me to exercise. Initial PT caused intense pain and falling even afterwards ..... I HAD NEVER HEARD OF MENICUS TEARS and never did from my knee doc (a surgeon).... Now, 4 years later of this, I demanded an MRI. The MRI showed lateral and medial menicus tears, horizontal tears. Meanwhile new xrays show some bone on bone bone spurring medial side that is new.... I am starting PT again to straighten my knee which I realized was bent from my limping kind of walk. sometimes it feels better, but it is very vulnerable. I take Meloxican. Is there any hope for me? (I cannot do a knee replacement because I can't handle the thought of it emotionally and the recovery)... Can I recover without surgery... they won't do menicus surgery due to now I have the slight bone on bone. I cannot find out if the MRI showed active (4 year old) tears, or if it showed HEALED tears.... THANK YOU FOR YOUR ANSWERS..... this was a great video that helps me understand.
I'm on my second meniscus injury in 3 years from football accidents, (different knees). First one healed back to full strength well ahead of schedule. I'm confident this one will too. I avoid ice. Only use heat to increase blood flow to the injury, so more nutrients can get to the construction site. Ice massively delays healing time! Especially for knee injuries, blood flow is already very limited inside the knee. Gradual slow progression of mobility. Doing small exercises every couple of hours, every day. I'm eating lots of animal collagen, bone broth and meat to aid the healing too. I was very worried and concerned the first time I had this injury, but this time I'm much more chill about it. Experience is king.
@Honey_s1ngh Avoid surgery if you can. It will heal naturally in 3-6 months depending on the severity. You'd only need surgery if there's a large flap of of torn meniscus tissue hanging outside the knee joint. In which case, surgery is used to trim the exposed the meniscus off. But that's only in very severe cases. If it's only minor, you'll be fine. Lots of gentle physio exercises and stretching. Lots of collagen rich foods. You'll be back to normal!
Brother really thankful for your reply and one more thing I’m not having that much pain it’s just a little numbness so I think I should go with some knee strengthening resistance training and slowly it should heal itself because I’m just 22 now
@Honey_s1ngh No problem. Building up the muscles around the knee is vital! Losing muscle in the affected area is one of the biggest problems people encounter in long term injuries. If you're using a muscle, you'll quickly lose strength. If it's still painful or feeling weak, do some light training with resistance bands. They're very cheap and can be used at home or whilst your sitting at a desk or anywhere. Stronger muscles will also protect you from re-injury. Resistance training is incredibly helpful, but don't do more than you feel comfortable with. If it hurts, take it easy. Knee injuries are always the slowest to recover as our bodies don't send a lot of blood inside the knee joint, which limits the amount of protien and nutrients that can repair the damage. You can increase blood flow into the knee joint with *heat* (hot baths, hot water bottles, heat pack etc), by increasing *mobility* (moving your knee around, light exercises) and massaging your knee when you're sitting or lying down. Your young age means you should recover a little quicker too. You'll be fine man! You got this. God bless you.
Thanks brother all this means like life saving to me although I’m much affected by this thing mentally rather than physically, god bless you too brother ❤️🩹
Every tear, pain, and inflammation will heal. I’m 54 and still playing soccer with uni kids. You don’t need operation, expensive foods, or costly therapist. Just listen to your body, take it easy, add more olive oil to foods. Cross training helps, do stretching exercises free from YT. don’t work out more than what your body able to handle. Build your strength slowly. If you feel fresh and happy like on some kind of drug lingering until the next day, you’re on the right pace. If you feel like you have been beaten up the next day, you’re over doing it and injury is waiting.
Learn a different sport that uses dif. Muscles while letting the injured parts recovered. When people go to the doctor and here is the money, you will get a surgery. Infact, your body is your best surgeon, it heals itself. Resting and sleeping is the time your body needs to work on repair the damages. Trust me, I do snowboard, tennis, soccer and still in good shape, probably in the top five fastest runners in the team.
@@maradona7lopez No! Do not do surgery unless you have locked knee and have No movement at all... As the above comenter said, body heals itself. Physio - therapy and later Injury rehabilitation exercise are best way for long term benefits.
When they say it heal in 4 weeks to 6 month. Let me tell you it is progessive healing you will feel better every week. And by the time you reach final week you will already be way better than what it was 1st day of the pain. One tip i can give do ice pack your knees for 15-20 minutes after evry 4-5 hours gor first week. It helped me a lot....i did ice therapy for couple of week until i again started feel confident.
My husband goes skiing! I just give up on advising😂 I just tore my meniscus while he is working with PT to get his healed. We have lived in three level condo for 24 yrs with many stairs! I go up and down the stairs 20 times A day. I believe our tears came as a result of the stairs and outdoor activities, we are older and our bodies start wearing down but we refuse to give in.
I injured 6 weeks ago, my knee is band inside so doctor tell me this is the meniscus tear and I feel very high pain and my knee is not fully stretched. I started stretching exercises & now after 6 weeks I am full recovered. I recommend don't walk fast, don't jump and not run first 3 weeks. After three weeks try to walk little fast and carry stretching exercises.
Your video is by far the best upfront, information I have found. I have to tell you, the walking in the beautiful pines and the warm sunny day, helped me to understand, it will take a lot of patience on my part. I too, like Judy Wasserman, is a very active athletic 62 yr old. I have attended spin classes for over 5 yrs. On a regular bases, 2-3 times a week. I have 11 horses, and need my mobility, just to care for them. I was at a Gypsy Show, showing my horse. Jogging a lot. 8 in hand classes. I can’t believe the pain, the inability to bend my knee. I had to sleep in a recliner, to keep my knee straight for two weeks. I can sleep in my bed now, but still have to keep it straight. A doctor’s appt. Is tomorrow. What are your thoughts on cupping, to help with blood circulation? I’m using a TENS machine too. Lots of Ibuprofen.
Thx for watching and for your kind words! Yes, patience can be such a challenge when we can't do the things we love. On a side note, I see many injuries from equestrian sports as well as dog agility competitions - maybe I'll make some content for those activities. Re cupping, I am a fan but I haven't seen any studies specific to internal knee structures - my patients do find it helps manage some of the associated muscle pain well though, so I like to use it as one part of the strategy. TENs is good too for pain. Good luck!
I see it’s been two months. The doctor wanted to shoot me up with a Cortisone shot for both knees, I declined. I told him I need to feel the pain to know my limits. I certainly didn’t want to cover the pain up. I am back to spin class. Taking it easy. Easing off the Ibuprofen. I do have to manage my time with the horses. My knees will and do tell me when I have over done it. I still walk backward going down stairs. It was incredible pain, I hope I never endure it again. I even told my husband, that I would go through childbirth again, before going through a meniscus tear!!!!! He looked at me and rolled his eyes.
I've had right medial meniscus pain for over 13 months and it has gotten to the point where I can no longer do the quad, hamstring, glute and calf exercises and even ride the exercise bike at the gym. The problem is my physiotherapist and a few months later even my specialist sports doctor misdiagnosed my knee pain as fraying of the meniscus due to arthritis. They also rejected my reports that something changed about 7 or 8 months in to the treatment. It was only after I switched to a different physiotherapist that a second MRI scan was taken and the correct diagnosis and full extent of the meniscus tear was revealed. By then it was beyond the standard you suggest. Besides, age is also a factor in the healing process.
I will be 64..contusion, right knee. I try to walk like you..hip stretches.. Tried bike outside..hurts. I don't want surgery so..I don't stand long periods like I used to.
It's such a depressing injury. I wish the best to anyone struggling from this demon
Thank you! There already aren’t enough hours in the day, and I hate how much this has slowed me down!🥲🙏🏻
I can't really walk at all right now. It's been a week. I am so depressed already. Praying this gets better.
ive had it now 1.5 weeks and im climbing on my walls .. have barely been out cause it hurts and scary despite crutches. im only 34 and i feel disabled and sad

Praying that it works.
how are you doing? So far ? Did the strengthening exercises worked ?
I've healed both meniscus tears by swimming, try that for 30 days
I have the same problem. I have found it is just something we have to live with. I just walk with a limp lol and constant pain
I am 67. Hope this helps
!😊
Thank you for this video✨
try swimming it'll heal it, i cured mine that way
My medial meniscus has a tear but I refuse to get a arthroscopy for partial medial meniscectomy.

Thank you for sharing.
Strength train! 3x week. ( I’m also speaking as a personal trainer of 25 years, and tore mine slightly in 2020).
One of the best videos on meniscus tears I’ve seen( and I’ve seen many)! Answered the questions I wished my Dr. Would’ve answered. Thank you!
Thank you for posting this. I injured my meniscus and it seems to heal then I do something that hurts it and takes several days to feel better.

Thank you.
Just recently tore my meniscus & this video has by far been the most helpful. Thanks
Just beefed my knee this morning. This video was very helpful in my Doom scrolling stage
Brother i’m also going through meniscus tear in both my knees for the last 6months. I hope we heal soon
I just had a knee injury this week
@@saadmansakib6612how are you now? Any improvement? Can you walk? Did you have any problems straightening or bending your knee?
@@PavelMartinov-me8ep I still have problems bending my knee but no problem in straightening. What helped me most so far are three things: improving posture while standing and sitting, losing weight and resistance exercises.
Probably the best video I've seen about the meniscus. Thanks for sharing!

Love from Scotland.
good luck in April!
Thank you, take care, Damian
How is your injury at the moment?
@@Mayu8-sd4ep 1year later, I’ve changed my leg workouts, I’ve added cold showers. My knees today, I’m going to say there great! I won’t be snowshoe jumping anymore, but I’ve been able to workout , ride my bike, gain muscle in my legs again
Great video, thank you, super helpful. Probably the best simple straight forward video about meniscus injury, with common sense advices. Really appreciated.
This is one of the best videos I’ve ever watched. Wonderful presentation, and very informative. Great scenery as well. It gave me a lot of hope too ☀️
I appreciate your insights here.
Don’t bother with the NHS - RUclips and google is honestly more effective for the average Intelligence person.
take lots of collagen and bone broth! It will help tremendously. Dont take it from me though look into it.

What’s your progress? I want to avoid surgery. Doctors say meniscus tear won’t heal on its on.
@@nelliarnaut2086 Good for me. Not jogging yet as I got injured on my mountain bike but my knee's good. From what I understand a trim is not good for future mobility but some docs can repair meniscus with sutchas. I've not had a scan so not sure of the severity of my injury.

Thank you . I really miss Bend . We lived on the Deshutes and I recognized exactly where you were walking . Stay safe .
Thank you, you too!
Thanks so much. Meniscus tear confirmed yesterday. Still in RICE phase but will look at rehab videos to do after that. Thank you.
Best explanation I've seen, thank you!!!!!!!

Supine AAROM Knee Flexion with Strap
Lay flat with strap looped around foot. Using
strap to assist by pulling, bend knee as much
as tolerable.
You can either use a strap or your hands for
this.
Perform 15 reps, 3-5 times per day
Quad squeeze
Place a ball or rolled up towel under your knee
and slowly straighten your knee as you lift your
foot. Squeeze your front of thigh muscle
(quadricep) as much as you can tolerate.
Perform 15 reps, each with a 2s hold, 3-5
times per day
Knee straightening stretch (using your
hands or a weight)
While seated, prop your foot up on another
chair, on a stool or just in front of you. Using
your hands, gravity, or a weight to press your
knee as straight as you can tolerate for 2 mins.
Hold for 2 mins, 3-5 times per day, trying to
progress by 30s each day.
Wall Sit
Back flat against wall, lower as much as you
can to a tolerable level you can hold for 30s.
Keep weight even between feet
Perform for 30s hold x 3
Single Leg Balance
Practice holding your balance on your left foot.
Use a wall for balance if you are finding it
difficult.
Goal to work towards 30s hold x 3
Body weight squats
Lower as much as it feels tolerable.
Lower slowly (for a count of 3s, then rise to a
count of 1s)
Focus on trying to keep weight even between 2
feet.
Single leg balance with clock step
Hold your balance on your Left foot.
Imagine the face of a clock and tap your R foot
to 12, 3, 6, and 8/9 o clock.
Start with small steps, progress to bigger steps
(more challenging)
Try not to transfer your weight to your R foot, it
should just be a toe tap
Perform 10-15 steps, 3 sets
Marching
Practice marching emphasizing hip and knee
bending.
Alternate between regular walking and
marching.
Perform for 1 min, (10s march / 10s walk), 3-5
times per day as tolerated.
Straight Leg Raise (can be done in sitting
or lying)
Raise L leg off the ground no more than 1 foot
high. Focus on squeezing front of thigh muscle
(quad) and hold for 10s.
Repeat 10s hold x 5, 3 sets as tolerated.
As you find this gets easier, try to hold for 15s,
20s, 25s etc.

I have a tear in my lateral meniscus, what one is typically worse lateral or medial?

It has only bothered me once when I cycled so had to give that up but after nearly 30 years I think I took the right advice.
By strap it do you mean wearing a brace? Did you do any exercises for it?
@@zobopromoinc.3879 Hi what she advised me was to just use a crepe bandage wrapped reasonably tightly (not to act like a tourniquet 😬) and I kept it bound for a few months and resisted vigorous exercise and for me it worked but I suppose everyone is different? How is it going?
Good luck

Thanks for a really great video Burke. You answered all my questions and provided lots of good information with clear and concise speech.
I look forward to improving by implamenting all of this advice. Much appreciated
Very informative.thanks for creating a vedio with useful content.
This is the content that I’ve been looking for thank you 🙏
Thank you for sharing these insights - best video I have seen about meniscus tear. I appreciate it very much :)
Brother I’m having a meniscus tear in the back of knee , but it’s a very small tear , so do i need surgery???
Amazing video with lucid explanation and valuable points to go through meniscus tear.Thamks many ..
I love soccer too, I tore mine a month ago and I don't want to do surgery, but I missed the game so much, what should I do?????
Learn a different sport that uses dif. Muscles while letting the injured parts recovered. When people go to the doctor and here is the money, you will get a surgery. Infact, your body is your best surgeon, it heals itself. Resting and sleeping is the time your body needs to work on repair the damages. Trust me, I do snowboard, tennis, soccer and still in good shape, probably in the top five fastest runners in the team.
What is YT?
@@maradona7lopez No! Do not do surgery unless you have locked knee and have No movement at all... As the above comenter said, body heals itself.
Physio - therapy and later Injury rehabilitation exercise are best way for long term benefits.
Thank u so much guys for ur valuable advice
Great vid! You are very thorough
I agree with the ice therapy. It was one of the best thing's I could do for my knee. I done ice packs every few hour's for 3 weeks. Help massively
My husband goes skiing!
I just give up on advising😂
I just tore my meniscus while he is working with PT to get his healed. We have lived in three level condo for 24 yrs with many stairs! I go up and down the stairs 20 times
A day.
Thx bro
This will bro or I go or surgery bro
Have u operated or self healed
This has been extremely helpful! I feel like I’m slowly healing. I do still have a lot of crunching, popping and maybe grinding in my knee still.
how did it go? how long were you injured?
Thank you very much sir for this wonderful information
Verily, distress has seized me, and You are the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy.”Quran 21:83
Thank you for posting. I just diagnosed with a medial torn meniscus. Your post was very informative. I start PT tomorrow.
sounds great. will try and see how it goes from here
I will be 64..contusion, right knee.
I try to walk like you..hip stretches..
Tried bike outside..hurts.
I don't want surgery so..I don't stand long periods like I used to.
Thank you very much for your insight. I'm from Camden New Jersey.
