How To Build a Livestock Trailer - SIMPLE AND CHEAP DIY

- Learn how to build a do it yourself livestock trailer in this episode of Homesteady
Livestock trailers are expensive. For the average homesteader who just needs to pickup a few feeder pigs every spring and deliver a couple does to a buck each fall, it is hard to justify the $5000 dollars you will need to spend if you want to buy a livestock trailer.
In the past we have tried just about everything to move livestock.... bed of a pickup (that was too drafty), dump trailer (too cumbersome), and even the back of our van (too stinky)...
No more. We decided it was time for a better solution. We needed something that was easy to load, not drafty, and didn't leave our van smelling like a buck in rut.
That is why we built a DIY livestock trailer out of an IBC Tote.
For this project we purchased a 330 Gallon IBC Tote for $60 off of craigslist.
In addition to the tote, we purchased 4 industrial grade ratchet straps - amzn.to/2Cr703a
And a few heavy duty bungee chords - amzn.to/2Fmk1f4
This build requires renting a Uhaul Open Air Trailer to attach your tote to. This rental costs around $150 each time you use it.
STEP 1 - Create a Door in the IBC Tote
To create a door, first I cut away a square opening in the side of the IBC tote, with a sawzall, leaving one side still attached to act as a hinge. On the inside of the door I attached a small piece of wood to add some meat to the door, and I used that wood to attach my hardware too. I used a small door latch I had around the farm, you could use any kind of gate hardware or barn latch to make a door in the tote. As an added strength to the door I mounted a bungee cord to the middle, mounting it with a small clamp used to mount metal pipe.
STEP 2 - Add a Vent in the Front of the Tote
The vent was essentially a mini door. I cut the plastic out of the tote with a sheet rock knife, making sure to leave 1 of the 4 sides of the door still attached to act as a hinge. I then made a rubber flap to go over the door, which operates and locks in place using another bungee. (See Video for how it works)
STEP 3 - Attach the Tote to the Uhaul Trailer
Once the tote was ready it was time to attach it to the Uhaul trailer. 4 industrial grade ratchet straps in the top corners of the tote strapped to the D rings in the 4 corners of the Uhaul trailer secured the tote perfectly. I made sure to tighten each strap gradually, so they all were pulling evenly.
The do it yourself livestock trailer worked great. In an upcoming video we will share with you the trip we took to take a adult buck to a farm across 3 states, with NO ISSUES!

That’s a cool idea. Even without a livestock trailer, I think every homesteader should have an open trailer. Great for picking up building materials, compost, wood chips, mulch, anything that doesn’t really fit into a truck.

Very smart!! I would cut a small ventilation hole on either side of the tote so that the slipstream from your car wouldn't be blowing a high volume of air into the cube.... or maybe at least have an "escape" hole for the air on the opposite side. Most Horse trailers and most livestock trailers have ventilation windows or bars on either side of the compartment and a solid front..

you need to put some 1 inch holes in the floor and roof/wall corners to allow water out and air in.Your front flap is not enough when closed. 4 floor corners for waste and 8 corner holes for air.
that's fine and dandy when it is warm out, but take a day when it is 40 below, and doing 90 down the hyw, that wind chill is 80 below
I can't see pulling our trailer just to pick up 2 goats and like the idea of a livestock rack for my pickup! Thanks for sharing :)

Great ideal. That would be good as you said for many types of animals .I think it would also be good if you needed to separate animals who may be injured or sick from the rest of the farm animals

#askhomesteady I asked a while back (my name has since changed from MBuff) about how to tell if my goats were pregnant, and, while I couldn't find a resource to do bloodwork in my area and ultimately called the vet for an ultrasound, I wanted to announce that both of them are pregnant and due in April! You could find a small utility trailer on fb or Craigslist for 4 or 500 would be better investment over renting one.

Ok the goat got into the tote but my pig dressed out to 288 lbs. Do you think it would accommodate a pig over 300 lbs going through a door like that and fitting into the tote? If it would work, I’m all in for that. I’m on the hunt for my new tote now.
yes it would but you better build a heavy duty door, there nose is like a backhoe, you wand the door solid. like a pellets rachet straped around the tote withe 2 good 2" wide 6000Lb ratchets straps, it will hold 3, 300Lb pig with room to spare

Good idea! The door could be cut to flip up to avoid animals stepping on the ramp...either slipping or causing wear & tear on the plastic.
Yeah, I think flipping the door up would be a better idea for both those reasons

In places like Pennsylvania or Ohio where I live there are usually livestock trailer rentals. I pay $60/24hrs for a livestock trailer. Good for moving cows and full grown pigs. I do like your idea for goats though especially since you could double it as a kid warming house!

Hi aust great idea you can also turn those into a hay feeder for the cows and goats!! I searched and searched for a livestock trailer and found a 16ft on Facebook for only $1200.00. So if you ever in the market for owning your own join some Facebook farm groups close to your town or a little further if you are up for traveling.

$1200 usd thats 1900 cnd, as a welder i built mine for under $500 cnd, fits 4 18 month old steers, and i have built many over the years for others for 2000 to 5000
IBC tote in my area is more valuable as a water tote. An extra large dog crate is cheaper usually. Maybe it won’t fit some livestock, but neither will this water tote.
Please don’t rent an enclosed Uhaul trailer or truck to transport livestock. It takes so long to air out and even then it still can stink for the next customer who wants to use it for their furniture.
What this video is saying to do is a better idea, your local Uhaul truck rental will appreciate it. 😁😅 Just saying. ✌🏼💚

Do you think I can transport 4 mini goats and a dozen mini pigs this way from California to Ohio? Im at a loss how im going to get them to my new home. Im relocating and don't want to part with them.

Don't rent a trailer.. Just put the tote in the back of the truck.

What do you mean "be responsible" what wrong with this set up that you disapprove of? It seems perfectly reasonable to me, after all, it's only for small animals. It's not like you're trying to shove a 1000# steer into it.

I thought livestock had to be transported in certain types of trailers, but I live in California so does anyone know if this would be legal?
you would have to check with you local animal laws, my understanding there are places you cant tie live stock up to a stack to graze even, or to lead them
Yes, check local animal laws. California is such a nanny state that you probably have to fill animal trailers with Perrier water and luxurious throw pillows 😄
While other states (looking at you, Texas) don't really care as long as the animal isn't losing body parts along the highway... and even then, they'll only fine you for littering! 😠
How is clean up? How do you get in there to sanitize it?
Good question, hay in the bottom is removed through door, then hose out, there is a drain valve built into the IBC tote which makes cleaning easier

You can chealy get a utility trailer about the size of the ibc. Homedepot, lowes and tractor supply are the ones i can think of in western PA. Just incase this info could help someone .

Used you can get cheaper and i rarely see plates on them so in PA you may not have to register them. I dont know about that thow.
I'm sorry, I have not went back and looked at all your videos. Question: You farm and you don't have a pickup truck to put the tote in? Am I missing something?
sorry no your not... i am glade you pointed that out, every farm any sizes needs an old beater truck of some kind as a farm truck or 2,, a 4x4 at least, you just cant farm any size with out on.. or you spend lots of money on rentals and tons of wasted time..
We homestead, and no, like many other homesteaders I know, we do not own a pickup truck. I would spend much more money on any truck and insurance/registration yearly than I currently need to spend on rentals. When the day comes that I spend more on rentals than I would a pickup, then I’ll get a pickup. Back in CT we ran a farm business and had a pickup truck. Now as a homestead we find we very rarely need a truck. That may of course change in the future.
That is plastic so if your driving and have to make a quick stop the animal will slide around inside. Should put some kind of flooring down to prevent harm to the animal.
We put thick hay down in the bottom. Animals will lay down while they are moving.
If you're going to go with this method, Tractor Supply rents this style of trailer for $15 dollars.

#askhomesteady why would you worry about that, your going back home any way.. a u-haul trailer is cheap by the day, dropped off at the same place, other then to lazy to tow it back.. lol they really up the cost for one ways, just because they can, the rip not only there dealers off big time but customers too, hence why im an ex u-haul dealer, with over $2700 owed to me by u-haul
