DIY Livestock Slide-in

  • When we first bought ourselves a few goats we figured we could move them in our van without much issue. We ended up shampooing the whole van repeatedly for an entire weekend to get the smell out... So, with a possible move in our near future, we set out to find a small stock trailer. Nothing we came across fit our needs; smaller (under 12 feet long and 2000-3000 pounds loaded), bumper pull was a must for our van, and keeping it within a reasonable budget would be a plus. We had heard of folks using cargo trailers for small animals, but could not find any used in our area. So, finally we stumbled upon the idea of a "slide-in" (which we had never seen before) and figured the man-of-the-house could make something happen. The result is the build you see now, using corral panels and gates, some left over roof sheeting, a bit of 2x4 wire fence roll, and our existing 6x12 flat bed trailer. After gathering everything we needed, we were able to get it put together in a weekend. We feel pretty proud of it, and are happy to share the experience with you all.

Can I ask, why did you cut the loops off and use the corral panels upside down? Was it just to get a more flush contact with the trailer deck while maximizing height?
Also, it looks like instead of the pin latch to connect the panels you used some other kind of metal strap - what is it?

Do you use it for cattle or smaller animals?
