  • I answer viewer question about how to transport sheep. There are four ways that I have transported sheep: livestock trailer, utility trailer, inside a van, and pickup truck bed. I show those methods of transportation in this video.

    Awesome, I like this! Great job, Dan! We have super Crew F-150; I've considered (but haven't done yet) putting a plywood board false floor with cheap laminate tile flooring in the truck bed, then straw on that with a cattle panel enclosure like you've shown here. I don't want to wash out the bed of poop, it'd be easier to install and remove the temporary bed floor. Either that, or build a break down enclosure for my utility trailer. :D

    I was used to travelling with my dogs, in a small pickup. When I got my sheep...the truck already had a silver cap( reflected sun, cooler underneath) and I had 1/2×1wire screwed over the window openings. 1 layer of 1 inch rigid insulation was under the rubber bed liner. I made a wire gate so that I could leave the cap door open when at pit stops..a small door was in the gate so I could fill water bucket without sheep escaping.. Deep bedded with shavings and straw...the sheep lay down for most of the 1200 mile trip home. This was an adventure for me....

    If you build anything out of cattle panel, you *must* polish the edges off your cuts! We built pens for an entire goat show at the fairgrounds, and in the first hour I ran to the store for files. A little power sander woulda helped!

    My sheep are nuts/high strung (small flock). I have a ewe that ran through a 4x4 fence post like it was butter. They also JUMP and herky when confined. I used galvanized fence strands to repair a gate, putting the coils every 4 inches all the way around, and my ram lamb went right thru that in seconds. I still haven't found all the wires.
    So, my concern (and fear) is making sure they can't jump or butt out.
    We bought a homestead with a hobby farm this year; 13 head came with it. Up to 20 with a few losses. We're new at this and unsure if we want to continue (whole other topic) but that also means looking for the least expensive transport option but safest option for getting at least half of these high strung sheep to auction. The best profitable auction is 4 hr drive.
    Would it be a viable financial option to contract transport or rent a proper trailer versus building one that would definitely contain these hyper sheep for the truck bed AND/or flat bed trailer?

    How long should sheep travel? I'm looking to get some khatadins but they are over 12 hours away and we will be getting them at 60-90 days old, do you think they'd be okay with the transport? I just don't want to spend 500 each and have them die 😭

      I think so as long as the conditions are ok. I wouldn't transport in high heat with low ventilation for them. It just depends on the circumstances

    Enclosed trailer can suffocate an animal. Animals need air!

      The Grass-fed Homestead if someone showed up to my place with animals sealed in a box with no airflow I would report them to the SPCA then would want to lock them in that same box & drive them to the police station!

    • @TheGrassfedHomestead
      @TheGrassfedHomestead  3 года назад +4

      @@corwynwarwaruk2141 How about politely telling them it isn't best practice and helping them find a better solution? If you shame people and have an attitude of reporting them (the person who asked the question was asking from a place of sincerity and needing help with information, not wanting to be cruel to animals) you will alienate them and lose an opportunity to help someone learn and provide a positive outcome.

    • @corwynwarwaruk2141
      @corwynwarwaruk2141 3 года назад

      The Grass-fed Homestead if someone does not have common sense that animals need air then they should not own animals. If they showed up to an auction mart or an abbitior here that requires inspection prior to unloading then they would have legal action brought against them for improper transport. Inspectors and the SPCA commonly go to small stock auction for enforcement action. One thing I do not tolerate is improper transport. That can also mean transporting in an open truck box in sub freezing weather.
      Improper transport goes further than just one persons right to own livestock. There are groups that want to abolish animal agriculture & they look for opportunities to discredit an industry by the action of the one person who doesn’t know what they are doing! They will use this to implore legislators to outlaw animal agriculture
      If you own stock you must know how to properly transport it in a humane manner.

      I have an 12' enclosed cargo trailer with a roof-top vent and am considering hauling two rams in it for about a 9-hour trip next week (late December). I'm thinking that the rams would have plenty of circulating fresh air with the vent open. Do you think that would be a okay?
