"Joe Gibbs put an eight figure deal in front of Kyle Busch, and he turned it down" Source: "trust me bro"
I don't doubt that Joe Gibbs tried, I just think that this reveals how poorly managed JGR is. To have a year's notice that the 18 needs sponsorship and still be fumbling around come September is nuts. Allowing a two time cup champion still capable of winning championships walk out the door is insane. Don't buy for a second that they couldn't find sponsorship.

@@zt5547 Here, I disagree with you and why. He and Adam had a couple down years, as most teams will have, and they moved Stevens to the 20 and put in a guy I have never heard of before. No surprise here that he only won that one race because Reddick got Briscoe'd. Also the pandemic hurt Kyle more than most drivers, as he clearly needs that practice time to see what his car has and what it needs to be better.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but after months watching this play out, it appears that JGR really didn't fight to keep Kyle. Probably because Joe wanted to put his grandson into one of his cars. This is probably why Truex wrapped up his contract so quickly. Dropping Kyle, might not be the smartest business move, but it was Joe's call. Also JGR has a history of doing this kind of thing (dropping good talent for rookies).

Part of my thinking for this is due to Tony's former teammate Bobby Labonte, won a championship for JGR, and was gone a few years latter.

From everything that has been written about this, JGR approached Kyle with a deal that as only 50% of what he was making under the M&M's sponsorship. Granted, this was probably due to JGR not being able to replace that sponsor with a comparable sponsor with comparable monetary input, but a 50% salary cut is just that. He was totally justified in seeking his worth. Toyota could have done more to keep their premier driver but didn't.

Why do commenters keep saying "dumped" and "fired" ? This is a business. The drivers have contracts for an agreed amount of time. Once that time is up, the team is under no obligation to resign the driver. Many veteran drivers have said that money is not the same, so its no surprise for a team to get a younger cheaper driver if they have the option. Kenseth wasn't screwed, Jones wasn't screwed, Kyle wasn't screwed! JGR honored their contract but decided not to resign them.

It's going to be interesting to watch. If it does work out, look towards Stewart Haas, remember Tony Stewart was also a Joe Gibbs driver at one point in time. They have Kevin Harvick who doesn't have much time left, they have Aric Almirola who has one more season, they have Cole Custer who just got a sponsor pulled due to his race manipulation penalty, so has an iffy future, so their only hope right now is Chase Briscoe. They need a big name driver as well. Watch and see how all of this plays out, we know Kyle will not stick around RCR long if he isn't competitive. Even if he was offered 10 million plus, if it's a series of 1 year deals, you don't just take it to take it when you're expecting 3 years or more. He's got plenty of years left in him. So just because the money was good, the stress of renegotiating year after year isn't worth it if you KNOW you can get a multi year commitment elsewhere. JGR dragged it along because Oracle dragged it along.
I don't mind hearing these insider takes, but I am smart enough to know they are playing angles for their own best interests. Hindsight is 20/20 so it's a pretty moot point because JGR is probably glad he didn't take that deal at the time either.

And I'm sure JJ would still be driving for Rick Hendrick had Lowe's not left the sport. JJ won 7 championships and Kyle has only won 2. Kyle reportedly turned down a $10M/year offer from JGR so I'm not gonna shed a tear for him. And him playing the victim is pathetic. Nobody wanted him when he got fired by Rick Hendrick 15 years ago. And as a fan who just turned 46 years old on Monday and has been a fan since before I can remember, I have to say that is absolutely 100% a NASCAR problem, and I fear for the future of the sport if it doesn't get solved soon.

It's neither a Kyle Bush or a NASCAR problem, it's a capitalism problem. All those big name brand sponsors are gone is because their numbers are telling them that most fans can no longer afford the brand loyalty based on a favorite driver. People are looking at the money they're making & deciding they can't spend $30 a week on M&M's candy or a case of Budweiser for a watch party, or Tide is just too expensive compared to the generic detergent. It's why you don't really know what a lot of today's sponsors actually do, because they're geared towards a buisness clientele not a consumer one. There's not enough spare money in consumers accounts to make it worth it anymore. And no matter what NASCAR does they can't change that dynamic.

These older drivers KB now being one of them, are waking up to the realization that those fat contracts from years past are gone. I'm sorry he didn't get a 5 year 50 million dollar deal but those types of deals are gone. Especially when you have a staple of our sport (M&M's) leaving and others following suit. It's just a numbers game and advertising exposure compared to viewership, cost of equipment, team salaries, etc. are just not in a position to where these corporations are comfortable spending millions upon millions a year for a sport that is far removed from its heyday in the late 90's and 00's when viewership was reaching all-time highs each year.

I find it interesting that the 18 car ran terrible (with multiple engine failures) in Bobby Labonte's final season (when it was a top five car the year before prior to Fatback's firing), and the same thing is happening in Kyle Busch's final season. It's only speculation of course, but multiple engine/parts failures and a lack of speed seems to encourage the drivers to find an alternative team without coming right out and saying that's what the company wants them to do.

Sure M&M's can sell to every breathing human being, but the actual question that makes a sponsorship worth it is are we selling M&M's because people are a Kyle Busch & NASCAR fan. And the answer most of these brand sponsors have come up with is NO. Seven states, 6 of which are core NASCAR states, still use the $7.25 minimum wage. Which suppresses all other wages. Why would someone offer $18/hr when they can offer $10/hr while pointing to the place paying $7.25/hr & saying if you don't like go work there. What kind of financial decisions would you make earning less than $300/wk before taxes? Probably not blowing $30 on M&M's to watch a race with your friends every week.

He realizes Kyle is getting to the end of his best days and will soon pass his prime and just let him walk rather than pay him whatever Kyle was demanding so that JGR can focus on the success of the future with their up and coming young drivers.
