  • Ross Chastain’s Hail Mary move riding the wall gained him enough positions to make the NASCAR Cup Series Championship 4.
    Door Bumper Clear's T.J. Majors, Freddie Kraft, Brett Griffin, and special guest Jeff Gluck, from The Athletic, explain how shocked they were to see him make the move, debate whether he prepared for it, and discuss if NASCAR should rewrite the rules to prevent it.

    All of us have watched the video bunches, watching it in real time I thought that a camera had malfunctioned. You all that work in this sport were surprised by this move -- as for it becoming the new Norm I will remain on the side of caution. The reason I say that is there are way too many variables in a choice like Ross made and in his case this one worked out, the next one maybe not. I will say that one of the reasons I believe he made the move was -- He has been one of the few driver's who did not get caught up in how unsafe this car is -- he stated numerous times that other driver's did not speak for him -- therefore he felt safe enough to send it. Geez what a moment all of us witnessed.

    The ONLY time someone is going to pull a 'rim-job' is for the win or a position in the chase.
    If you hit the wall during a wrecking finish at Talladega and advance a spot, I guess a new rule would make it illegal.

    If Reddick really did experience issues of not feeling right in the head from a bumper to bumper stack up on a restart, imagine the damage that could be done if someone is traveling 40+ mph faster than you and hits you in the back bumper while trying to do what Chastain did. If they want to allow wall riding as a legal move, then they need to soften up the ends of the cars again to absorb some of that force.

  • @bennybaldwin2627

    I feel like an element of the "make a rule" conversation I haven't seen much mention of is the damage report. Freddie touched on it with the missed joke opportuniy.. but I don't seen the wall ride being an option in any other situation than the hail mary last lap gotta get a position type play. I have yet to see any info on how buckled the car was, but I doubt it could have completed any additional laps.. My point is, I think everyone is talking about it, but it was a one in a million move.

  • @raphaeldagamer
    @raphaeldagamer Год назад +1

    My take on that move is it'll probably only work on a small course like Martinsville. The curve is so tight that everyone going for the inside has to slow down a considerable amount, and the course is so small that, while Chastain carried this through turns 3 and 4, there still wasn't a whole lot of time or distance that he spent going along the wall. In terms of legality, I feel like if the rules are going to change to prevent this in the name of safety, let people meddle with the sport and dilute it as much as they want, but any rule against using the wall to your strategic advantage shouldn't be enforced retroactively, and it will almost certainly end up similar to, or possibly worse than, the double yellow line/shoulder penalty shenanigans.
    Long story short, Ross Chastain is a mad genius masquerading as a NASCAR driver, and I live for his antics.

    1. Put "Boost Wheels" on the side of the car, each race the drivers get 3 boosts.

    I don't see it working again because everyone will be looking/waiting for it to happen again plus will the situation ever really present itself again where someone will be physically in a position to do it. Last lap your in 2nd, can you simply floor it, cut to the wall and take off? I'm not sure it would be that simple, wouldn't you need space to accelerate AND you would have to touch the wall at the perfect angle. Kudos to Ross for pulling it off, doesn't it just fit that it was him that pulled this off this year after his other adventures so far? Go get the championship dude!

    People used to "wall ride" on the old NASCAR racing sims and you could pass the entire field. The game added an engine slowdown of 5 seconds to counter this. I used to win at Martinsville in a league this way. I just had to time it to avoid cars. Then league rules added, "No wall riding".

Any driver now that doesn't do this move from now on is not doing the most they can for their sponcers, and would be fools not to. Do you really want everyone in the field to do this all at the same time on the last lap.of every race? Thats the door Ross opened!

  • @sams-pg7hj

    they talked about it on the main Dale JR download episode with letarte, but it really doesn't need to be a rule because it wont work at most places so it wont happen. plus, other drivers will know it might happen so they'll block or be more aware to stop it. this worked mostly on the element of surprise
