I remember the first time that I heard authentic Hungarian folk music. I was visiting Hungary as part of my Kodaly music education training, and my group was traveling all over the country to see how the Hungarians teach music in the schools from preschool to the last year of high school as well as the training programs that were for young musicians who showed promise of achieving a very high level of proficiency. As we,I’d drive through tiny villages throughout the country we would encounter wonderful music like this that was so full of heart and the joy of living. There is nothing like this music that I have encountered in other countries that I’ve had the good fortune to visit.
First music from Hungary that I heard (not quite folk music) was Kodaly's Hary Janos' suite, and I most loved a theme which people told me later it is like a second national anthem in their country. Later, I discovered the traditional material of hungarian music as well as romanian and that of other nearby countries through the repertories of Bela Bartok in Microcosmos and For Children collections. When I visited the country a hungarian friend gave me one of the first Kamilla Devai Nagy's records. Also by that time I heard Sebo Eygiuttes.... In Budapest people invited me to a place where Hungarians go to enjoy folk music. It's not enough to have a knowledge of hungarian music, but this music always brings me a feeling of happiness. The main musical shop in Rio de Janeiro in the Sixties and Seventies was that of Mr Arany, a Hungarian musician who played cello. And one of the main influences in the brazilian musical scenary today is Ian Guest (Janos Geszti), composer and music teacher who came to Brazil in the Fifties, when he was 16 years old.

I remember the first time that I heard authentic Hungarian folk music. I was visiting Hungary as part of my Kodaly music education training, and my group was traveling all over the country to see how the Hungarians teach music in the schools from preschool to the last year of high school as well as the training programs that were for young musicians who showed promise of achieving a very high level of proficiency. As we,I’d drive through tiny villages throughout the country we would encounter wonderful music like this that was so full of heart and the joy of living. There is nothing like this music that I have encountered in other countries that I’ve had the good fortune to visit.

First music from Hungary that I heard (not quite folk music) was Kodaly's Hary Janos' suite, and I most loved a theme which people told me later it is like a second national anthem in their country. Later, I discovered the traditional material of hungarian music as well as romanian and that of other nearby countries through the repertories of Bela Bartok in Microcosmos and For Children collections. When I visited the country a hungarian friend gave me one of the first Kamilla Devai Nagy's records. Also by that time I heard Sebo Eygiuttes....
In Budapest people invited me to a place where Hungarians go to enjoy folk music. It's not enough to have a knowledge of hungarian music, but this music always brings me a feeling of happiness.
The main musical shop in Rio de Janeiro in the Sixties and Seventies was that of Mr Arany, a Hungarian musician who played cello. And one of the main influences in the brazilian musical scenary today is Ian Guest (Janos Geszti), composer and music teacher who came to Brazil in the Fifties, when he was 16 years old.
