Unfortunately a trap these movies fall into is they're trying to be gritty and "realistic" however as someone who trains at an MMA gym and rolls/ spars with people who are going to compete the reality is not that interesting, to watch at least. A camp consists of you going day in and day out training your ass off to prepare for one very specific thing, you have to obsess over the upcoming fight and comb through whatever tape/ info you can find out about the opponent to try and get an edge. So the drama feels forced and stupid and the plot seems unrealistic with the main character getting preferential treatment.
Pinning your comment, because It made me think of something I should have mentioned in the review. The movie devotes virtually no time to Jackie's opponent. Like, I think there is less than a minute total of Lucia "Lady Killer" Chavez, before they actually fight. There is literally no build up to the fight, because with all of the other drama there was no room for it in the movie.

How come they always just use the same tired ideas for everything? Since it's Halle Berry they could have written a story about how she got into the sport and was fast tracked due to her "marketability" (ala Paige Van Zant) which stunted her skill development. Now she is in the final stretch of being physically able to compete and has a personal crisis over having wasted her prime and never making it to the top of the sport all the while realizing that it was what she truly wanted all along more than anything. Then you turn that into either a tragedy or a triumph.
I think a more interesting story would have been to make Halle's character a late 30's/early 40's veteran of the sport and have the kid be a teenager who she gave up before her fighting career(when she was a troubled youth). Then he comes back into her life as a troubled youth himself. She gets him into fighting as an outlet for his aggression, and watching him train brings the itch to fight back in her. She ends up coming out of retirement to get the closure on her career that she missed years before.
