    Unfortunately a trap these movies fall into is they're trying to be gritty and "realistic" however as someone who trains at an MMA gym and rolls/ spars with people who are going to compete the reality is not that interesting, to watch at least. A camp consists of you going day in and day out training your ass off to prepare for one very specific thing, you have to obsess over the upcoming fight and comb through whatever tape/ info you can find out about the opponent to try and get an edge. So the drama feels forced and stupid and the plot seems unrealistic with the main character getting preferential treatment.

    • @BeigeFrequency
      @BeigeFrequency  2 года назад +43

      Pinning your comment, because It made me think of something I should have mentioned in the review. The movie devotes virtually no time to Jackie's opponent. Like, I think there is less than a minute total of Lucia "Lady Killer" Chavez, before they actually fight. There is literally no build up to the fight, because with all of the other drama there was no room for it in the movie.

    How come they always just use the same tired ideas for everything? Since it's Halle Berry they could have written a story about how she got into the sport and was fast tracked due to her "marketability" (ala Paige Van Zant) which stunted her skill development. Now she is in the final stretch of being physically able to compete and has a personal crisis over having wasted her prime and never making it to the top of the sport all the while realizing that it was what she truly wanted all along more than anything. Then you turn that into either a tragedy or a triumph.

    • @BeigeFrequency
      @BeigeFrequency  2 года назад +29

      I think a more interesting story would have been to make Halle's character a late 30's/early 40's veteran of the sport and have the kid be a teenager who she gave up before her fighting career(when she was a troubled youth). Then he comes back into her life as a troubled youth himself. She gets him into fighting as an outlet for his aggression, and watching him train brings the itch to fight back in her. She ends up coming out of retirement to get the closure on her career that she missed years before.

    This movie was so underwhelming. Im a huge Valentina Shevchenko fan so was delighted to see her in this but the whole thing seemed forced. This movie got more hype due to UFC happy to work with her but outside of that this movie wouldn't have gotten even half of the eyes on it that it did. They have a blast of UFC/MMA faces in there which isn't an issue but given that a legend like Shevchenko was the supposed 'villain'.. it would have been better if they kept her as is, stoney faced walking in and just dead eye staring people down. Instead they tried to ham it up and then do a total 180 at the end!
    The biggest annoyance for me as an MMA fan were the commentators .. it sounded so overly fake it irritated me to listen to them.
    Was annoying to see people make excuses in favour of this movie.. I mean I saw people pull it all out of the hat...
    - men hate it because its a movie about women and womens mma
    - People are hating because of her colour.. "how dare a black person direct and star in there own movie"
    - its her first time directing
    ..blah blah blah etc etc
    All breakdowns and excuses to one side.. its a shitty movie
    If you want to see a good mma related movie check out Warrior.

    I don't know why they made Valentina's character from Argentina. I know she lived in Peru for a while and speaks Spanish, but when her character says her 2 lines her real accent is so obvious. They should have made her Ukrainian.

    Here's an idea.
    A Shounen MMA Anime. They love their plucky main character ranking up and discovering new abilities right? We're talking Ippo levels of fidelity to the sport and realism. We have character archetypes. The scary stoic russian. The chill hawaiian. The slightly unhinged guy from Oxnard who wears sparkly gloves to the press conference and talks about ninja turtles. The memelord from Brazil. Heck even the coaches can be characters! Imagine the main rival's trainer is a John Danaher clone who's always wearing rashguards. Imagine the protag's trainer is a harsh sensei like Trainer Gae.
    Each fighter has their unique style and behavior, like one is jab and teep heavy. One crosses distance with devastating attacks. One is a gnarly grappler who talks smack while mangling you. Pump up the camp and you've got a great series right there.

    A very good movie about fighting is the Million Dollar Baby. It shows the main character actually struggling in her personal and professional fighting life where it makes sense that she wants to box to feel good about herself and to prove to her mother that she can rise up and move forward in life. Along with having her actually have fight ls where she's getting beat down but having to fight back to the win like Arturo Gatti or Frankie Edgar. Thats not mentioning the realistic and depressing ending that most fighters face when their careers are long gone.

    It's been a minute since I heard someone reference "Blood and Bone". Not exactly realistic, but easily one of the best fighting movies I've ever seen.

    • @BeigeFrequency
      @BeigeFrequency  2 года назад +1

      Blood and Bone is entertaining because from what I remember it leans into the shlock.

    • @jakefoley9539
      @jakefoley9539 2 года назад +1

      @@BeigeFrequency Oh absolutely. The movie knows its not realistic and sort of embraces that fact, creating this fantasy world where you're able to believe all this stuff could really happen. Dante Basco is hamming it up the entire time and Bone is basically a demigod. I believe he only gets hit once in the entire film.
