So, I watched this Animatrix episode yesterday evening with my 12 year old and explained doping to her as the oxygenation of blood as done in a lab to enhance performance. I considered machine manipulation as well, picking up on clues such as the close relationship with the father and the crosses suggesting he didn’t cheat. (Also, why tell the story about someone who is special if they in fact cheat, and are not as special?) I was delighted to get the notification about the analysis of this video! What do you think is the significance of the wall nuts?
As for crosses, I count 7 crosses.
1 on Dan’s father
1 in the key
And in the Closing scene
Dan is wearing 1
Nurse’s collar
The background has many crosses that I’ll just count as 1.
And there is a cross by each ankle, like cuff zippers.
V! In Chinese Culture intricately carved or decorated symmetrical walnuts shells are valued as collectibles. They're are sometimes used like meditation balls, which appears to be how Davis is holding them, but they didn't show him rotating them so I leaned on the Nurse's story being the trigger.
Someone also mentioned something about the number 4 being very prominent throughout the short too. For example, he runs in lane 4 on the track, the number 4 is also the most visible number on his running suit, a cross has 4 points, and something else I cant remember. If I find the original comment I will copy and paste it.
Edit: The part I couldn't remember was that he was the 4th one, or speculated to be. I will still look for the original comment.
I had always assumed that the wall nuts represent his passion, or desire, to run again. Even tho he failed to run, let alone walk far, he hasn't given up, and will most likely keep pursuing that desire. So, like the wall nuts falling, they didn't crack, or break. Neither did his desire to run again.
He went fuckin nuts bro or at least he lost his marbles
Along with what everyone else is saying, my first thought was that the wallnut itself kinda resembles the pods that the humans are kept in and to which he woke up in, however briefly.
It's like a cage, and inside is this nut with the potential to become something huge and significant, which is how I view Dan; his ability to wake up through sheer strength and will alone is pretty incredible, and if the agents did falsify the drug tests then they obviously consider him a very significant threat.
When he has them in his hand, he has now been confined to a wheelchair, almost like another barrier that has been enforced on him to try to contain his strength.
As he discards them and stands up, once again he defies even what the agents are saying about him never being able to walk again; he is telling them that they cannot contain his strength and his spirit, no matter how many prisons they put him in. They constantly underestimate the power of humanity.
My guess is that the agents will soon realise that he is too dangerous to be kept alive and might have killed him :/ which sucks cos he is an awesome character! I hope Neo notices him and helps him unplug.
Pretty literal interpretation, I know but it kinda makes sense I guess! 😅
Also, maybe the references to the no.4 are maybe implying that he is important to the future of Mankind (ala Neo, Trinity etc? The Matrix writers do love their numbers lol). Perhaps his real world name will be Cuatro or something heh!
He awakens through sheer will .
The *Matrix* is strong with this one!
That's willpower
@@Neomatrixology are the agents the robots from the second renaissance animations?
do they take human form or something?

If you’re wondering Madhouse also animated death note , HunterXHunter 2011, and one punch man season 1

@@Lasgriz its interesting, when I first saw this episode, I found the art style and the flawless sense of speed and motion similar to redline
Why does everyone forget the single greatest anime ever comes from Madhouse. Redline!
Is it possible that this is Morpheus' story on how he was freed? Similarities between Dan and Morph in the way they both broke free from their bonds and yelled about being free.
We find out that Morpheus was freed as a child in the Matrix comic *Miller's Tale*
ruclips.net/video/Y50t3Rs5cbo/видео.html
I think this could actually be link from Matrix Reloded
The way I always saw it is Dan has caught a glimpse of what the Matrix was during his first run. It's said that humans can't run a 100m in under 9 seconds, and his first world record was JUST under that. So it shows that he had already passed what humans are capable of. Maybe during that first run he probably caught a glimpse of it and that's what he had a small obsession with getting even lower time as fast as possible, because once you know the truth it's probably hard to just sit around and train. That's probably why the agents were already keeping an eye on him.
This story really resonated with me. My last name is Davis and I used to run track and field professionally. When they are playing well, every athlete goes into a trance-like state that people refer to as BEING IN THE ZONE. The Animatrix video takes it to a whole different level and your explanation dives even deeper. I think I'm going to watch it again. I didn't realize that it had so many levels. great job and I am so excited for matrix 4
Thanks for watching and commenting! I've heard runners talk about the adrenaline kick phenomenon that comes with high performance athletes. This story was very unique in many ways and certainly stands out.
I played a bunch of sports over the years and realized that the more developed i became in any sport, the more often i would get in "the zone", or what now is called flow state in psychology. I later on found that sports that are on the edge all the time, like racing(in my experience), or maybe downhill skiing and many extreme sports, will force you to be in flow state for most of the time, as it's necessitated in activities where it's a razor's edge between order and chaos(high risks of death or injury) and to be competitive one has to be on the ragged edge (think isle of man tt race for example).
many athletes, particularly in high risk sports, use methods like meditation to be able to get into the aforementioned state more easily and maintain it longer. The practice, unsurprisingly, goes back to various martial artists and warriors, such as the samurai etc.
@@Neomatrixology i was a athlete and power lifter and there was feats I've done where I remember it but it was like I was in a "zone" where I was there but not at the same time lifting extremely heavy things and not feeling any strain or pain after wards this short story gave me nostalgia memories from my time as an athlete
Good video btw im a huge matrix fan
I hope Dan Davis comes back or escaped the Matrix from that the previous version. Very Deep story with many many messages!! Love this channel!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
I hope he's at least mentioned in Matrix 4
One of the best episodes. That "Free" phrase gives me goosebumps every time. I completely missed the drug test accusation, thanks for pointing it out.
It was interesting to learn that the Wachowski's requested to have Davis fail. He failed to learn the entire truth about the Matrix, but he broke the record, and continued to strive for freedom. A real winner in my book.
@@Neomatrixology
What I always wondered what happens to bodies in the real world. He burst his mussels, did his real muscles burst too? What about if someone looses an arm or leg? The machines cut it in the real world? What about scars? :D
@@Neomatrixology
They didn't want too many people to self-substantiate. The Kid was enough for them :D
@@stargazer1295 that was the interesting thing about this episode. In the original Matrix, Neo bleeds from his mouth after jacking out of the construct, does he simply bite his lip or tongue? Do vessels just burst on their own?
In the case of World Record, Davis is electrocuted, and the Agent Reports he will never walk again, but inside the Matrix, he was able to walk briefly which would lead me to believe his real world legs were fine. There is also a Matrix comic *There are no flowers in the real world* where an operative is able to push past his real world injuries, inside the Matrix.
So to answer your question, I think the relationship between real world physicality and inside the Matrix residual self image is situational.
@@Neomatrixology
The runner situation makes sense. What doesn't is what you pointed out about Neo. Yes the body can't live without the mind, but Neo's blood is equivalent to someone just by thought process inflicting physical injury on his body even spilling out blood.
If I dream I'm falling and hitting the ground, when I wake up I'm perfectly fine, the same should be with simulations.
I thought one of the sadder anamatrix episodes of being truly free
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Yeah this episode was really sad
I found that episode very moving.
I would love to see live action shorts.
Franz! I liked this one a lot. It wasn't packed with a ton of hidden meanings but the animation style really stood out & I really like the fact that Davis continues to resist the simulation despite his wheelchair.
You are probably the most insightful RUclipsr I've seen discuss the matrix
Appreciate you for watching and commenting! Going through the Matrix Comics one by one right now so stay tuned 📺
The more I watched this the more it made me wanna cry, and once again if people realise how truly deep this is. I think there's symbolics about slavery in this. The whole system literally against him and he goes through so much physical and mental pain to be free but powering through with pure willpower, fearlessness and belief to the point where he literally breaks/removes every shackle the system put on him. Literally the story of a black slave Rastafari with earthstrong physicality longing to go back home to Zion.
For most people the swift awakening would have killed them as their mind wouldn't be ready to be freed, but he survived. Despite being wrongfully accused, his 'prison sentence' and getting the electric chair, he survived - and I believe was eventually going to fully break free. I'm even wondering if there's a connection between him and Morpheus. There's so much more this episode has to give, that may reveal more about the Matrix we never even knew.
The 2nd Renaissance 100% makes reference to slavery and you might appreciate the B1-66er trial video if you haven't seen it already:

that scene was inspiring
it made me feel like shii if he can keep goin
I can too
he believed in himself when tha otha guy didn’t n he kept pushin
we tend to limit ourselves based off others doubt & pessimism
not knowing we got potential in every aspect of our life
we living in a matrix
not gonna lie it do get hard & lonely sumntimes
being “woke” “enlightened” “unplugged” while everyone else still asleep but that don’t stop me from getting to my destination
mane whoever reading this
I hope y’all triumph in life 🤘🏼💯
@@thundercatelgato They stopped many of us from breaking free over the years and continue to introduce new, sneaky ways to programme us into the system, but the floodgates to Zion are open, and you are on your way brudda :)
This one is my favorite short, I would also relate this film to a matrix comic woth the escape artist freeing himself during his last performance. Also theory here but the news reporter was a redpill who wanted to help Dan be freed but unfortunately he failed that time
Also his pod is my favorite series and is in a different location then the main plant in 01.
Yeah, I think it is a previous version of the Matrix which could also explain the difference in pod styles. Couldn't find any evidence to say for certain where these pods are located in the real world, but I noticed the Wachowski's allowed the Anime designs a bit of freedom in creating the episode backgrounds.
Well the agents wear different clothing in this episode a part from the pod being different, so yeah it's plausible that it's different version of the Matrix.
Noone knows for sure how many previous versions there were or still exist for that matter. The Earth is huge, I see no reason for the machines not to have more cities around the globe too, each with different architecture and even different robotic models.
Plugged back into the Matrix, because Dan has unfinished business. Bursting your leg muscle, that's gotta hurt.
World Record Is just a 10 outta 10 "short film" just perfect all around a guy that surpass everything and everyone and even what was considered impossible by a machine, such an interesting character with only like 8 minutes of film crazy story
the "a record that will live on in peoples memories for years to come" line from the agent is interesting to me, considering in the history of running, usually the world witnessing one person break a record acts as a catalyst for more people to try and break it, now that theyre aware its physically possible. Obv theyre hoping people are discouraged by his injury but i doubt nobody in the global running community would try and beat the time if they knew it exists.
The new movie explains this. They just update the system everytime something happens. Like a game patch
So what do the crosses represent? Also, I agree - it looks like he's about to levitate in the end. What is up with that? Maybe it's similar to Neo's ability to fly just not yet mastered?
I believe a lot of the religious representations throughout the Matrix universe is open to interpretation. In this case, the character Dan Davis is shown in the pod as if he was electronically being nailed to a cross. For me it symbolized the concept that any potential or gifted individual is subject to crucifixion within the Matrix system.
As far as the levitation, Trinity, Morpheus all showed the ability to hyper jump in the films. So to your point, no Dan Davis never completed Tanks jump program lol
Suffering begets apotheosis
It makes me wonder... How many other ways can others discover the matrix? Could they be able to achieve leaving the Matrix by other talents, like playing music, drawing, mathematics, writing? Can someone just... Completely will themselves awake?
I think you would enjoy the Matrix comics a great deal.
I literally just discovered that the animatrix (movie?) Exists today, and was kinda astounded but also somewhat unsurprised as to the background lore of the matrix
As for this (skit?) It might just be my eyes playing tricks on me,but Dan actually does seem to notice the agents behind him shortly after all the other competitors seem to transform into agents.
I'll rewatch it a few times to confirm if need be,but im fairly certain that in one of the scenes where everything is in bullet time, his pupils are on the far (left) of his eye briefly, suggesting that he's looking around,or looking back out of the corner of his eyes
Thank you for watching and commenting! The Animatrix, Matrix Online, and Matrix comics were not heavily promoted at all so don't feel bad. I was fortunate enough to have experienced them the first time around, which is why I created this channel.
I didn't notice Dan Davis looking back specifically, but overall I think the idea is that Davis is way more *aware* of his surroundings than he should be. I believe that he says, "Free" in direct response to the Agent asking 'what more could anyone ask for'. That's one thing I've always liked about this episode. The main character is so focused and driven by achieving his goals that the facade is revealed. Not because anyone told him nor was he looking for it, but because his individual determination was simply exceptional.
I wonder if he regained his ability to walk after that since he falls to his knees rather than falling flat on the ground. (Which would happen if you were paralyzed.) like he took back the one thing in life he wanted by sheer force of will.
When I watched this episode I saw the father as Dans “Oracle”
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Does anyone else find it weird that the agents seem to have no animosity towards him, and despite their cruelty to him have an almost positive regard for his achievements? It seems an odd duality, they don't even necessarily hate him they just have a job...it doesn't make the agents any less horrible, just not typical as antagonists
As far as I know, only Agent Smith & Agent White showed any kind of negative feelings towards the humans. The others seem more mechanical and show the hive mind attitude. Just following orders, nothing personal.
I like the theory that Dan might have been the One in a previous matrix.
That actually makes perfect sense and the girl in the glitch house since she was able to do it with ease and everyone else struggled at first
The crazy thing is every one who runs 100 miles and/or runs a full 24hrs say the same thing
Watching World Record is weird without screaming at people over Discord chat while sitting in an extremely uncomfortable position as someone drowns out the only audible sound from the TV with deep guttural moaning
Like the Usain Bolt dude from “The Animatrix,” Juice Wrld Record transcended because he's technically the one∴ By breaking free, by himself∴
Thanks for watching and commenting!
nah
This is my top 3 episode and I believe it takes place before Kid's story (in Matrix timeline) as it shows that self-substantiation is possible.
What's to explain that part is pretty much self explanatory.
Explained the original idea for the episode & that the Wachowski's changed the original theme of this story. The narrator at the beginning explains the meaning to the episode, which I then tied back to the 2nd Renaissance, explaining that it likely takes place in an earlier version of the Matrix. Also explained the ending.
Don Davis, Dan Davis
Respect
i feel like if you need this one explained your either new to this or are still in the matrix
Dan and Kobe Bryant's story are so similar to me in some way...
Yes!! Him and Terrell Owens
I'm so out of shape
Not even the Matrix could help me be an athlete
I’m dumb, when I first saw this short I thought Dan was Eddie Gordo from tekken because of his outfit
Have you seen the video UNKLE - rabbit in the headlights? Good thing yo cross reference
This was an amazing explanation. I never thought that it would've been the matrix itself that caused the positive drug test in order to discourage Dan so he wont push the system to the limit.
Its stories like these that motivate my self discipline to be the best I can possibly be every day.
Top notch animation.

If you like the art in this one check out Redline, another animation by madhouse and they really give you a sense of speed in the car racing screens.

But why was that episode shot? What does it bring to the story?
There are many references to religion especially christianity troughout the trilogy and the animatrix series. The best example is ending of Revolutions when Neo is depicted in a crucified pose with bright light surrounding him. It's obviously intentional and I guess it's to convey the notion that the matrix is something you can be released from as some kind of redemption.
We allready live in an illusonary world it's called maya read the vedas

I always thought it was more of a John Henry type of story man faster then the machine if you think in turns of the matrix computing power and his speed then you'll see that he was moving faster then the machines could process basically he was faster then the machine and it cost him his life just like john henry the parallels are pretty spot on but its just a theory I've always had
Thank you for watching and commenting! One of the things I liked about this episode is that they never flat out tell you what made him special. The Narrator simply says:
*Only the most exceptional people become aware of the Matrix*
I like to think that this was the 1st temporal anomaly or rather the 1st time choice was introduced to the matrix i have even herd that his father could've been the oracle remember what the architect said the answer was found by accident and we know the 1st two versions of the matrix was failures in fact the architect called them his greatest failure thousands rejected the matrix so the third was made with choice and they learned that it was 99% effective but the 1% would lead to the anomaly so what if this was the machines first attempt to control the anomaly
@@jayyoung6428 the Architect does tell us that his 2 Beta versions failed & that the Oracle discovered a system of control that could contain the choice problem by having the anomaly choose to reset the Matrix. In that same scene the Architect also tells us that each of the 5 previous versions of Neo had all chosen to reset the Matrix. Neo was the first & only one to choose the other door to save Trinity. The athlete Dan Davis doesn't make his way to the machine mainframe to speak with the Architect.
Davis may have the gift, but never received the guidance to follow the path of the One.
My theory is Dan is one of the previous of the 6 ones
7 or 9... just a guess.
Straight crosses yes. If you count the shots of crosses blended into the background it goes well into the double digits.
I counted 8
Why agents didn’t take over this runner’s body
Thank you for watching and commenting! Great question. Usually, the answer is that the crew is jacked into the Matrix from a pirated broadcast. But in this case, Dan Davis is directly connected to the Matrix in the pods. My best guess, is that since the athlete naturally rejects the Matrix, perhaps the Agents can only take over individuals who fully accept the Matrix as reality.
