Robbie Krieger wrote this song about his girlfriend who repeatedly threatened to "walk out" on him and when she did, she always slammed the door to make her point. Jim helped write the lyrics, particularly the line about "Seven Horses..." According to Robbie, Jim advised to always throw in a line that was mysterious to the listener. In actuality, the line doesn't mean anything, it just fit the tempo of the song. It has nothing to do with drugs.
Yeah, The Doors is a unique band. Many of their songs have that trippy whistling-in-the-dark kind of vibe. If Ray Bradbury novels had soundtracks, they would be done by The Doors.
Damn, you are right. The Doors would indeed be the perfect band to create music for Bradbury's novel of a sinister carnival and its effect on a small town, "Something Wicked This Way Comes."
You nailed it! I've been listening to The Doors for over 40 years and reading Bradbury for about the same amount of time and never made that connection, at least consciously. Lex's "Doom Carnival" comment ties it up.
You guys should react to The Doors more… "Five to One", "The Crystal Ship", "Twentieth Century Fox", "Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)", "Back Door Man", "I Looked at You", "End of the Night", "Strange Days", "You're Lost Little Girl", "Love Me Two Times", "When The Music's Over", "Hello, I Love You", "Love Street", "Touch Me" 🎸🤘
Jim Morrison is probably the most enigmatic person in popular culture. He talked about how his family was driving through the Nevada desert with his parents and they saw a car crash. The people died. They were native Americans. His life was never the same
When I was facilitating recovery groups back in the early 1990s one of the people who came to one of the groups knew Jim Morrison. He said that Morrison was a train wreck waiting to happen. It finally happened.
Jim "Mr. Mojo Risin' ", "The Lizard King" Morrison's voice matured over the five years of The Doors career. It became more subtle and at the same time textured and more able to convey emotion.
Robby Krieger, the guitarist wrote this song. He said he and his girlfriend would argue often in those days and it would always end by her walking out the door, and her slamming it so hard it would shake the entire house. This is where the line about her walking out the door like 1,000 times before comes from. By the way he married her, and they are still married to this day, over 50 years later.
The Doors could have many different sounds. They could be bluesy, jazzy, psychedelic, and even creepy, but no matter how they came across, they were always The Doors.
Lex, my parents were at that 1968 Hollywood Bowl concert with The Doors and Steppenwolf. They were 15 and 16 years old. I've always said I'll never experience anything that cool.
Hello from New England.. Lex was spot on with the Doom Carnival comment..I've always described the Doors as evil carnival music...And yes this is Him Morrison singing..It was his last album and he would die less than a yr later.. Peace..
There only one reason I’d go back in time. No, not to see the Pyramids built….No, not to witness dinosaurs walking on earth. It would be to see the Doors Live at the Hollywood Bowl. Those times were amazing.
Wife here.."Creepy trip vibes".Cool description..!!..The Doors could sound very different 🤔..from one song to another.., but always rocking..You two hit on some great points as always!!..Thanks again!!
Among "Road House Blues", "LA Woman", and this...tied for first on favorite Doors song. But i love their entire catalogue even after Morrison passed. Mmm...i think "Love Her as She's Walking Out the Door" is more perverted in nature, but maybe dual meaning. Like he's staring at a particular feature as She's Walking out but knows she'll be back. That's a very misogynistic approach, but I don't mean it's a positive thing, i just think it's a fun song whether it's malevolent or tragic.
This is one of my favorite songs. It's got this weird uplifting feel and yet also, unsettling carnival vibe. You should do NOT TO TOUCH THE EARTH or 5 To 1. Great songs too.
Jim was more into taking you on a mind expanding spiritual like journey with the songs and poetry that he wrote like When The Music,s Over or Not To Touch The Earth . I think he tended to get a little bored when he would have to sing some of the shorter type pop songs that Robby Krieger would write. That maybe why he sounds a little different to you. When they wrote together they created absolute MAGIC like Light My Fire. Not to say that Robby,s songs were bad they were very good in fact and usually were Top 10 hits.
@@dannyessers7434 besides partying that hard he also studied like mad. My great grandmother was his grand fathers sister and they were Clan Clarke. @@lastchild6153 it was pretty awesome finding this out. Some times I think what a cruel joke life played on me. It let me end up adopted by the neighbors and never able to meet Jim. Then again I was two when he died. I didn't find out until age 52 that I'm Jims second cousin, once removed. I was a fan by age 12 or 13. The Holladays are my bio maternal side, and the Mattesons are my bio paternal side. The Clark(e)s cross both sides of my family multiple times. So do the Stuarts. My 8th great grandfather Henry Mattesons ancestors were nobles but when he migrated to Rhose Island he wasn't important. This is my favorite doors song. That is such a killer groove. And that bass line, wow. And this song is just so fun to dance to also. And I really love the quality of his voice on this.
"Doom carnival in New Orleans" - more accurate than you expected. After The Doors recorded the LA Woman album, they did a short tour and the last place they played was at the Warehouse in New Orleans. Morrison was drunk and despondent, partway through the gig his bandmates said they saw his energy just leave him, and he started smashing the mic stand against the floor of the stage in frustration. That was the last gig that The Doors played with Jim Morrison.
Classic Doors! Keyboard-led rock is hugely underrated, but we all love it. Brad might be expecting too much from Doors lyrics. People are Strange, Backdoor Man, Hello I love you - these are all moods, not stories.
Every doors song no matter what genre they did was a little bit "creepy". They always looked at the odd, wierd, outside of the norm subjects and way of looking at things.
Jim Morrison was a poet before he got into music so that's what alot of their lyrics ryrhme so much. I absolutely love listening to the organ in doors songs.
This was a single in the Spring of 1971. It was the 1st single released from the album L.A. Woman. After that later in the summer, Riders on the Storm was released. Shortly after Jim Morrison, lead singer , died at age 27. At age 15, I had a little rock band and this was one of the newer songs we learned.
Way too literal - loosen up. It's about the music, melody and observation Try 'The Changeling' to really mess with the literal-ness. Or - perish the thought When The Music's Over.
Good observation, because there actually is just a little something different about Jim’s voice on this album, their final studio LP. If you listen closely you can hear that the pitch of Jim’s baritone dropped to its lowest point on that record. So for that release his voice was deeper than it was before.
“Seven horses seem to be on the mark” … always gave me Lord of the Rings vibes: riders on the mark were those riders that had the lances, and where they’re patrolling is called the Mark.
I know how you feel about thinking of having been there. I wasn't at the first Lollapalooza but was at the second and third. It was an amazing experience to get a mix of EVERYTHING at one crazy long outdoor concert festival thing. It was a great memory of my life.
Lex, I understand when you spoke about the significance of seeing someone in concert before he died. I saw Stevie Ray Vaughn in concert shortly before he died in a plane accident.
It was the Chambers Brothers with The Doors and Steppenwolf on that July 5th at the Hollywood Bowl 54 years ago. Perhaps listen to their song "Time Has Come Today" -- get you some cowbell now! Steppenwolf's "Berry Rides Again" makes for a great pop quiz: identify all the Chuck Berry song references if you can. "The Pusher" is another good choice, written by the same guy who wrote "Joy To The World" (you know, "Jeremiah was a bullfrog...") which Three Dog Night had a big hit with.
Hey guys what's up! Greetings from South Florida! Yeah that's Jim Morrison singing. He's just singing a lot mellower than he did in the other songs you reacted to. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
Well done, as always. The "other group" on the poster was The Chambers Brothers.; their big hit was "Time Has Come Today", which came out in the mid 1960's. The Chambers Brothers' music was described as "Psychedelic Soul". Hope all is well.

Hi Brad and Lex, is Jim Morrison the original singer in 1971's Love Her Madly? Yes. I feel Jim did improve his voice range and vibrato since 1967's Light My Fire. Great REACTION! Thanks! - Bob
Jim Morrison in my opinion is the greatest front man of all time. He was the total package , looks , voice, and on stage antics. Long live the lizard King.

The Chambers Brothers were the 3rd group. "Time has come today." React to this one. Political action during the Vietnam era and psychedelia. Black awareness beyond just James Brown saying I'm Black and I'm proud.
The other group the chambers brothers. From LA mixed blues, gospel, psychedelic, rock. Do your self a favor and listen to Time has come today. It's 11 minutes so not a song for the channel but worth listening to on your own.
OMG I love Lex!! Girl you're definitely an empath. Jim had done so many drugs and drank so much alcohol in 4 years, he aged like 50 years. 😥 So freakin sad but he lived life hard and full. You can hear all the damage in the LA Woman album, but they were still so amazing and Jim was so hot! ❤
Jim Morrison thought of himself as a poet first, a singer second, and a rock star third. He even fled to Paris with his girlfriend to write, and there is where he died.
Song's basically about a guy saying he still loves his woman even though they're fighting at the moment. The lyrics are vague enough it could be a break-up song, but "As she's walking out the door" could also refer to her storming out the room after a fight
Some Doors songs were written by guitarist Robbie Krieger, and others are credited as "lyrics by Jim Morrison, music by the Doors." You can definitely tell which is which - Robbie's are very "I love you baby"-type pop songs, whereas Morrison's lyrics are, well, obviously Jim Morrison lyrics. They both had great songs though. Guess which one this is.
Jim was bloated and struggling with his addictions when they recorded this album, LA Woman. His voice sounded slightly deeper and gravelly by this stage.
Robby Krieger wrote the song I think. He was their guitar player. He wrote it about about his girlfriend. It was about how they would fight and he would realize how much she ment to him as she was walking out. I may be wrong but it seems like I remember him speaking on the song in the 1 of the 20 different documentaries or 100 different interviews I've saw on the Doors.
Hi Brad and Lex. If you want to imagine watching The Doors, I think the closest you're going to get to that now is 'The Doors Alive' tribute band. Check them out. I saw them in Glasgow and they were amazing. They do tour worldwide and may well come to where you are, especially if there is enough demand. Æx 🙏
Visited Jim’s grave in ‘86 at Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris. Doors cassettes, empty wine bottles. A mess. Revisited last September. Got a good upgrade. In other news, he’s still dead.
On the mark, get set, go. Seven horses of the Apocalypse. I never knew the words. I bet nobody knew the words. So cool today that the words are so easily accessible. In the old days, once a month "Hit Parader" magazine would post the lyrics of maybe 5 of the top 40. It was slow-going.
Hi Brad and Lex, is Jim Morrison the original singer in 1971's Love Her Madly? Yes. I feel Jim did improve his voice range and vibrato since 1967's Light My Fire. Great REACTION! Thanks! - Bob
Yep, Jim was the singer on every song. He also was the lyricist which he would come up with on the fly. His favorite drug of choice was booze.
Robbie Krieger wrote at least as many of The Doors songs as morrison and he wrote most of their hits.
Jim Morrison in my opinion is the greatest front man of all time. He was the total package , looks , voice, and on stage antics. Long live the lizard King.
5 to 1,the Soft Parade,Cars Hiss by my window, the Spy ( Texas Radio & the Big Beat)The WASP, Summer's Almost goon,Spanish Caravan,AN American Prayer,When the Music's Over.. ..
For more "doom carnival" Doors music, check these out guys; "The Crystal Ship", "When The Music's Over", "Strange Days", "Not To Touch The Earth", "Queen Of The Highway", "The WASP (Texas Radio and the Big Beat)", "Ship Of Fools" and "Five To One".
awesome classic song
The Doors had a huge influence on a lot of musicians.
LOL
The Chambers Brothers were the 3rd group. "Time has come today." React to this one. Political action during the Vietnam era and psychedelia. Black awareness beyond just James Brown saying I'm Black and I'm proud.
Ray Manczarek on form as usual for this, I swear that man was the heart of the doors while Jim was the voice
That is a very recognizable Jim Morrison vocal.
The other group the chambers brothers. From LA mixed blues, gospel, psychedelic, rock. Do your self a favor and listen to Time has come today. It's 11 minutes so not a song for the channel but worth listening to on your own.
Jim Morrison…he was so deep! You should watch his documentary!
I love this song❤❤❤
One of their best songs.
The doors are legends, especially Jim. The last of the true musical poets. Could you give Peace Frog a listen please.
They made a video about Peace Frog two months ago 🙃

Oops, my bad. I must’ve missed that one.
Jim Morrison thought of himself as a poet first, a singer second, and a rock star third. He even fled to Paris with his girlfriend to write, and there is where he died.
He fled to Paris to keep from going to jail.
You need to watch the movie The Doors . Val Kilmer played Jim Morrison. Great movie
Thinking not a breakup, loves her face and the rear view as she walks out the door "a thousand times before".
Maestro Fresh Wes - Let Your Backbone Slide
Like the Beatles, so many well written great songs in such a short period of time.
Yes Lex!! An abandoned them park music is perfect.
Æx 🙏
Probably my favorite Doors song. 💥💥💥👍😎
This was in the movie, FOREST GUMP. Love The Doors.
It’s a relationship where he gets a kick out of her saying she’s going to leave-cos he knows she never really will.
Thats not 70's talk. That is 7 horses lined up at the gate for a horse race at the track.
