I did lol because of your channel I bought a Northface Kaban. I hated it tho haha I brought it with me to KL and Bali and shared my experience on my YT channel.
AER Travel Pack 2 Small. It's perfect for 2-3 days trips or longer - especially if you can be wise about packing and don't need to bring any shoes beyond the ones on your feet. It's perfect sized and looks discrete enough to carry into business meetings etc.
I appreciate the adlib commentary/humor and editing on this one. Feels less like the teacher reading directly from the PowerPoint, more believable/alive, in my opinion. Great job Lauren and team, I’m looking forward to the next one 👍
I am a recovering overpacker. I’ve been watching your videos in the past few weeks just for fun then lo and behold, I was called to take part in a week-long medical mission. I put in all that I needed in one backpack + body sling and didn’t have to check-in any luggage. With a little creativity, I managed to arrive home too with just enough souvenirs. It’s a great feeling to be able to do this. Thank you!
My personal tip is use a sling as a packing cube for your plane essentials. So that you can stow your bag either in the bin under the seat or in baggage and it's as simple as grabbing out your sling.
😮 very interesting.. I have to give this idea some serious thought though I could see the straps of the sling snagging on something when pulling it out.
@@qakbot100 I add "strap keepers" to every bag and will pack the sling as condensed as possible. Also it gives you a smaller sling option for a bag at your destination. Safe travels
I pack more than one sling for use in flight. 1 is for tech and 1 is for snacks. Having the straps reduces the possibility of them sliding onto the floor if I fall asleep and makes deplaning a snap if I don’t have time or energy to repack.
I took my first disaster flight this weekend and ended with this same conclusion. Using an rei 18l day pack and their fanny pack fits perfectly in the top and carries my essentials.
Please do a video featuring best personal item backpacks with trolley sleeves! My goal is carry on only. Would love your input on best carry on luggage/backpack combinations!!!! Thanks!
Would be good to show the dimensions. I find a lot of carry-on and personal items are larger than guidelines even though they use those titles. Also, do a review of items that don't have laptop sleeve for those of us who don't travel with a laptop.
Agree. Westjet has a size restriction for Personal of 18x12x6 inches. Its insane to keep it at 6 inches. Basically can't use the front pockets of yer backpack 😭
@hairlessmonkey7642 Many non-US carriers have the same small size restrictions. Some also have very strict total weight allowance for what you bring aboard.
I love my Patagonia Atom Tote. Perfect backpack for a small person, fits many things including 14inch laptop and 12inch tablet. Never had a problem to fit it under the seat.
I travel in European cities during winter. When reviewing daypacks, please look into some important issues: (1) comfortable padding on the straps? (2) contoured shoulder straps? (3) waterproof outer fabric? (4) outside "secured" mesh pockets for a water bottle and an umbrella.
I have the women's specific Fairview 40L, however it's much too big for a personal item. Great for carry-on only for a week trip to Europe on one of the non-budget airlines, but when my son flew EasyJet he had to pay almost as much as his ticket for his carry-on since only a small personal item was included.
great vid - but as a travel backpack user would love another version of this video with more messenger style / front /side carry bags that can balance you out more while you have a larger backpack on.
I just bought the dell pro hybrid which is a brilliant personal/tech bag with a messenger strap and tuck away backpack straps or just as a briefcase! luggage pass through, quick access pocket and all for 50usd!!!
I have the Patagonia Lightweight Travel Courier, and it's perfect for this. They discontinued it but I just checked and there's some on poshmark and eBay. I can wear my Aeronaut and sling that over my body while wearing it. Mine is solid black so it's classy enough for all sorts of travel.
Excellent review - advice. I've been trying to find a good choice that can work for personal carry and also for daily work. And your best video yet Lauren!
1:53 totally agree, been doing this for years, never heard it from vloggers before - sure some will recommend a tiny pullout pouch for meds, but the bag you show in the demo is close to (but not) full size.
I've been using the Topo Core Pack for over two years and only once had to put it on the overhead compartment as I overpacked but otherwise, always perfect.
I’m traveling personal item only for the first time in a few months and I plan on taking the Kanken laptop 15. I’ve used the original Kanken for school/everyday for about 7 years, which I still have, but I recently bought the laptop version for the laptop sleeve and turns out it fits within JetBlue’s personal item size!! I’m very excited. And yes, I’m definitely using packing cubes.
Can you guys do a video for petite and shorter people? I’ve watched every backpack video on the internet at this point, and no one has a comprehensive review of bags for those of us who have smaller frames. Most backpacks are catered to large and tall bodies and they all look ridiculous on me and are uncomfortable to carry. It’s been impossible to find a bag that fits my 15” work laptop and doesn’t completely overwhelm my frame! I’ve purchased 12 backpacks (
I know this is an old comment, so you may have found a good bag by now. I'm 5ft tall, 100lbs, and I've found three bags that work great for me. The cotopaxi tasra 16l, the paradigm by Tom bihn 9l, and any size of the kankens. I have a mini kanken that I use daily, and then a big 17 inch laptop kanken that I can use for travel
Great video! I fly Spirit and I live in the 18x12x9 limits. The perfect pack for me is the Cotopaxi Allpa 28 liter. Fits in the sizer and is huge inside!
For anyone looking for a budget option, the Quechua NH Escape 500 32L backpack from Decathlon has pretty much the same features as the first backpack shown in the video for a really affordable price and although the measurements are a bit bigger than what's allowed as a personal item in Ryanair for example, a lot of people say they can successfully use it as a personal item. With all the features it offers I think it's a good choice if anyone is interested 😊 I would love if Pack Hacker would review this budget backpack!
I have 2 decathlon bags, the quality isn't as high as these packs but for the price it's close enough and you save enough money it's worth it. Love them and good recommendation!
I have the 16L version as a challenge for myself to pack light. So far, I'm happy with this bag! Lots of pockets, padded shoulder and back, also has suitcase strap. I'm considering to buy bigger version...will see...
FYI, I have used the Able Carry Max Travel - 30L for under my seat. It's not a lot bigger than that Able Carry Daily Plus, I don't think, and maybe it's a little iffy on some airlines. I was on Delta - perfect fit.
I recently flew American Airlines with an Evergoods CTB26 packed around 75%. I wasn't questioned but it was sorta difficult to move it between the seats while getting snacks/charger mid-flight.
Top quick access is important IMO. I can grab the bag from under the seat and have ready access to that stuff in my cramped economy seat. Boundary Errant has worked well for me with that in mind.
Well-researched. I am looking for larger backpack that conforms with average 18x14x8 personal item size of most domestic airlines. Most of these packs seemed considerably smaller. Thank you.
What do u suggest for everyday office bags for women and pls suggest brands that ship world wide . A bag in which bottles and tiffin could fit in with other essentials
I nearly tuned away when you were showing oblong bags before you got to the Timbuk2. If I’m looking for a personal item that’s gonna squeeze through RyanAir then I don’t want wasted corner space. One thing that’s always bothered me is the number of bags the proper size for personal carry-on size but waste a third of the space on the back panel and shoulder straps. I don’t need the same shoulders, back, waist straps on a personal item bag that I would on a 60 L trekking backpack. One of my favorites happens to be a budget bag… CabinZero. No waste of space, incredibly lightweight. no frills or pockets as I can fill with gear bags and packing cubes. Sure, the straps are lightweight and would dig it and if I wasn’t already covering my shoulders with any carry on jacket or sweater… And obviously I’m not carrying 60 L of weight, so why bother with the climbing gear, level straps? Timbuk2 was my go to when I lived in San Francisco, and now that I live in Seattle, Home of Tom Bihn I’ve gotten past the “dad bag” look and did purchase the Cambiatta. Good sturdy bag! Team #TomBihn
LL Bean Stowaway bag is under $60 and many color choices, and with chest and waist straps it is super versatile. Just don’t overstuff it and the airlines won’t check fit. I also have a hack for extra clothes that airlines overlook that isn’t wearing the clothes. But I’m keeping that secret to myself😊.
I like that she is showing more personality in this video by keeping the side comments and jokes. I think PH should do more of this so we can experience more of the hosts’ personalities! PH is great, but injecting more levity or spontaneity would be great!

This video was made before my personal item backpack was introduced. GoRuck came out with the Bullet Double Compartment in 16L and 18L around Thanksgiving of 2023. In actuality, these bags hold closer to 20L and 24L. These are GR2 style bags in lightweight ripstop nylon with a quick access pocket and no exterior molle. I chose the 16L over the 18L because: 1) it holds all my essentials and everything I need during flight (everything except clothes and shoes) and 2) the bag goes under the seat in front of me in a 2-bag system and I prize my leg room. Packhacker rates the GR2 40L as one of the best travel backpacks available. I would say the same would apply to the Bullet DC bags in terms of personal item backpacks.
I think I will go for Aer, but not the City Pack Pro shown here, but rather the Travel Pack 3 Small X-Pac since I’m looking a do-it-all backpack, so something that can handle my extended tech EDC (includes the Steam Deck in it’s bulky carry case) but also a bag that’s versatile enough to fit a packing cube or two for some light traveling.
I just bought a North Face Never Stop Utility Pack and I'm excited to see how the shoe compartment effects the main bucket. Love these options for personal item bags too!
Great rundown, thanks!! Our fav fir eons now has been the original Paragonia Blackhole Tote bag. Holds tons, weighs little, looks decent. No comfy straps but for a personal bag meeting tight Play Airline sizing restrictions it works/worked!
Great video. Thanks. Which of these have that sleeve that allows you to attach it to your roller carry on by slipping it over the extendable pull handle? What's that called?
Ryanair listed as the first line, only a single bag that fits ryanair officially in the video. Not to mention, that there are some other bags that fit and are slightly more capacious.
I would love to see a couple of options for personal item backpacks without a laptop compartment, for those of us flying a budget airline and not taking a laptop. So far I've only found the costly Tom Bihn Synapse 19.
Thoughts on Hedgren? I have a backpack that is pretty sleek and holds my laptop with some nice pockets and roomy interior that I love for work trips and it fits nicely under the seat on the plane.
Thanks for the helpful comparisons. Do you know if a personal item backpack meets the dimensions requirements for width and depth but is 2.8 inches taller in height than the dimensions listed on Japan Airlines for personal item, would that be acceptable? In other words are they really strict about meeting ALL the required dimensions, otherwise, the personal item backpack has to be checked and cannot be carried on board?
Well have used an REI Trail 25. It's just a tiny bit too big. Have not been questioned or even talked to about it (possible because I'm an older guy and very short). Southwest is cool about it, but I don't know so much about Lufthansa (and the puddle jumper from Albuquerque to Denver). The Trail fits a hellavu a lot of stuff and there always seems to be a tiny bit more space. The organization is also nice. Even a secret pocket down below (rain cover) and three water bottle slots. Nice colors too, and is easy to carry. Too bad it's too large. :(
No review channel will do a review of the Briggs and Riley Convertable Duffle. I was hoping you folks would be able to. It fits underseat. Briggs and Riley has not done one and they do one every junk bag.
Could you recommend a back pack that would be suitable for a nappy on flight bag. Around 25-30l with good organisation and reasonable price. Thx you.( I am based in Europe 😊.)
interesting selection. I really like the Minaal Daily, has a remarkable capacity and an excellent laptop / tablet organiser - and very comfy to carry around…
Question about the peak design 15l choice. Does the 20l also fit as a personal item? I notice other 20l bags on this list so I'm curious why the 15l was mentioned from PD and not the 20l?
Currently travelling with the Eagle Creek Gear Warrior Travel Backpack/Duffel 45L and I like it. I just wish they’d put a water bottle holder on the side.
Have you ever traveled with just a personal item, and what’s your go-to bag for minimalist travel? 🎒✈😎🌴🗽

Hi, I don’t have included in my ticket a carry one. Does any of the backpacks in they video will work for me?
Has anybody tried taking the Aer Travel Pack 3 Small as a Personal Item on an airplane? Maybe some of the bigger airlines.
You think Ryanair's bag cage is small? Try Aer Lingus'!
Why are the 30L Topo bags and Patagonia mini MLC not here?
Would love an update on packing cubes.
Is there an easy way to search for bags based only on size? I want a 17" x 13" x 8" bag.
No review channel will do a review of the Briggs and Riley Convertable Duffle. I was hoping you folks would be able to. It fits underseat. Briggs and Riley has not done one and they do one every junk bag.
Thoughts on Aer Travel pack 3 (Small) as personal item? is that in the category too?
Could you recommend a back pack that would be suitable for a nappy on flight bag. Around 25-30l with good organisation and reasonable price. Thx you.( I am based in Europe 😊.)
interesting selection. I really like the Minaal Daily, has a remarkable capacity and an excellent laptop / tablet organiser - and very comfy to carry around…

I think the Peak Design you are reviewing is the Everyday Zip, not the Everyday V2, isn‘t it?
What do you think about the 5.11 rush 24?
Question about the peak design 15l choice. Does the 20l also fit as a personal item? I notice other 20l bags on this list so I'm curious why the 15l was mentioned from PD and not the 20l?
I have the same question. I just had the 15L delivered yesterday and man, is that small and tight. Sending it back…
Currently travelling with the Eagle Creek Gear Warrior Travel Backpack/Duffel 45L and I like it. I just wish they’d put a water bottle holder on the side.

How are you fitting a 45L bag under an airline seat as a personal bag? 😮
Curious - why is the Aer City Pack chosen for this list over the Aer Flight Pack? Is it due to the weight?
What airline is that in the opening sequence? I’ve never seen so much space under a plane seat!
Any opinions on the Dakine Essentials 26L?
buen video, saludos desde argentina
