  • Part 1 in my multi part series on the LS Swap. With the availability, performance and general kick ass nature of the LS series of motors it is inevitable that they would find their way into more and more square bodies.
    Here I provide as much information (probably too much) as to how I chose my engine, where I got it, what else was needed and what options were out there.
    There will be more vids coming that will address: fueling, cooling, trans, installation, drivelines, transfer cases, harness and PCM and many other things.
    Please don't take this as gospel, this is just my experience and understanding, I am sure that there are many different ways of doing this, all right, this was how I did it.
    Any questions, please post them below, I will attempt to get as many answered as I can in the comments, a future video or over at:
    www.merricksgarage.com
    Many have asked about the parts I purchased for this build. As much searching as I have done and pricing comparisons I have made, Amazon is still my go to.
    Here is my list

    The 5.3 LM4 and LM7 have a cast iron block. The L33 produced from 05 - 07 is the aluminum 5.3 truck engine

      @rtk6157 5 лет назад

      Wrong. LM7 and LM4 are the same engine with the exception that the LM7 is a iron block and the LM4 is an aluminum block. I own a LM4 and my friend has a LM7.

    I love your channel!!!!! watched every video at least a million times lol but you should make a part 3 tutorial on the wiring. I've done countless research and printed a bunch of pinouts but you really should simplify for people who really don't have too much experience on the wiring. especially the relays, wiring the injectors and coils together, fuse block>>>

    • @bdavis12758
      @bdavis12758 8 лет назад

      yes sir I did, a few times actually. I prefer to do it myself for cost efficiency AND knowledge. but its really not that difficult YET I still don't have a full understanding but I see a lot of people asking about the electrical. you covered a great deal of your build and some of the tools.... but not very cost effective(not being a hater)...
      on another subject, what are your future plans on this truck since you covered a lot of different subjects on the k5..... is there anything you would do over or replace using something different if you could go back in time?

    • @bdavis12758
      @bdavis12758 8 лет назад

      Merricks Garage thanks sir.... I am no professional believe me but for other people who have questions on wiring the ls.... the bulkhead is what really gets people...... don't go out of your way fpr the vid of any but it would help people on that subject..... how much do you suspect you have in your Truck? for the swap for mine after deployment I'm looking at maybe around 3k considering using mt th350 and buying an engine for less than 1k in Kansas...... and that's woth new dual tanks with a baffle and new pumps and sending unit with the high pressure valve and harness for the switch and bearings for my acels

      lmao I can only imagine. my wife watches these videos with me before I left and she already told me I'm not spending that much on my truck. lol. I told her this is my happy place and if she doesn't like it get out(trying to kid around) well lets just say I wasn't married for a few days lmao!!!! be she knows...... I would assume $2500 is a lot since I can find the pair cheaper in by me at least. was the engine low miles or new? yeah I plan on reusing everything and doing everything myself. have you checked out Mrwhitels1? he has some AWESOME DIY for wheeling. not quite as off-road as you are in a sense but he's got a truck, tools, and a go pro lol what made you ultimately choose the 6.0 versus the 5.3? they are essentially the same except for some being VVT and all that stuff..... AND the 6.0 is less fuel efficient from what I've dealt with

    First off thank you for ALL your vids... They always have the answer I'm looking for... Now down to picking your brain a lil lol I'm doing a 5.3 swap in my 87 k10 4x4 I went on ahead and bought a donor truck which is a 2006 Chevy Tahoe I've made my own stand alone harness from the donor trucks engine harness and have mostly every thing I think I might need do the swap but do u think I can use the gas tank and pump out of the Tahoe that way I don't need to by a new pump for the swap? My goal is to use as much stuff from the donor truck in my k10...

      +Merrick's Garage ok so if I'm basically getting rid of all the Evap system when I get the computer tuned I really don't need all that extra stuff huh...? Oh also I will be using the 4l60e aswell and I'm thinking about going with a 6 to 4 bolt tcase adapter from advance adapters w/vss and for engine mounts I'm using dirtydingo adjustable plate mount they look pretty awesome... But yes sir I do have dual tanks... Should I just stick with those? And what size pump should I use... Hhhmmm two tanks two pump... Sorry for the million questions but to be honest I've watched a lot of vids on here and your are by far the most knowledgeable guy I've found and trust me when I say I've watched a lot of vids lol I think I've built this truck a 100 times in my head already lol

    Hey just wanted to know what kind of front coil shocks you put on your Blazer? I own a really clean 1988 R2500 4x4 GMC Suburban. So I have four shocks in front. Would coil over shocks such as Monroe coil overs be a good application for my truck?

    • @MerricksGarage
      @MerricksGarage  5 лет назад +1

      Coil over? I think you mean the shocks I installed when I was in leaf springs? Bilstein all the way. No Monroe!!

    i just bought a blazer chalet. unfortunately its a 76, how did you make your swap legal here in cali. i would love and lq9 but not with cali smog laws. fyi. look up blazer chalet. very rare.

    • @johnreddick413
      @johnreddick413 6 лет назад

      Mike Romero I don't know a ton a bit Cali emmissions but what it some down to is the engine has to meet the same emissions requirements as if it was in a factory truck and you have to deal with the referee station they will look at all your paperwork and smog it I would call them first
