There are going to be huge huge trust issues. Kon seller h, kaha se maal bech ke kaha chala gya, or maal customer tk ni pohcha, if all these things aren't paid attention to, it'll be a failure.
But eventually the platform will get saturated with reviews & e commerce support to hold the platform. Like people ordering things from Instagram just for the quality & service.
Same problems exist on Flipkart and Amazon as well. They solve themselves along the way. Even Amazon and Flipkart depend on our ratings for product and seller!
Thank you for explaining so beautifully. Actually Indian retail industry contributes a significant portion of the country's economy, accounting for around 8% of employment and 30% of the country's GDP (IBEF, 2022; Technopak, 2020) but mostly dominated by unorganized retail 88% in 2020-21. Organized players has failed to drive out these small retailers because of three reasons specially in India; First is rapid urbanization, secondly high density and third is the dramatic income differences between poor and rich. Day by day the gap is increasing. Now E-commerce is trying to monopolize the market but I think that they will not able to do that much destruction because most of the zen Z and millennials are high adoptor of technology (around 52%). Rest of the people stills wants the old way of personalized service, human touch, fear of online transactions etc. On the other hand 60% of people are Buttom of the Pyramid (BOP) consumers. They need these small stores to survive with relationship credits and smaller packages for mere daily necessary items. It will be a disaster if these traditional channels disappears. Governments has taken much steps to prevent it till date like banning FDIs in several sections. Now coming with ONDC is a great initiative but your points are extremely valid and important. Proper research should be there before implementing. It is interesting to see how these dynamics play in the long run for betterment of us, the average Indian consumers. I am currently doing research on this topic. Feel free to contact me if you need any information.

India's biggest marketeer is its PM. Leave the marketing to him. The moment it is ready, look for ONDC in his speeches and see the magic. He did the same with UPI and marketed it as BHIM.
The key is service. No questions asked returns, immediate resolutions, timely delivery, protecting the customer is what Amazon & Flipkart got right. Unless the new platform gets this right, it is bound to fail. Leave it to the retailers and they will take the customer for a ride. Drafting customer protection policies and ensuring that it gets implemented will be key. People usually do not mind paying slightly more for protection/safety.
Totally spot on. The nationalistic side of this is not going to help also, mixing business and political goals plus government interventions = big mess
Most satisfying video I have seen in a long time! Great job, you're a superhuman at explaining things. Keep up the good work, this was my introduction video to your Channel and man you have some talent!!
There was a Paytm market place where we could order directly from small retailers, but the service was very poor like packaging, product quality, etc. Also, getting the product replaced was a major problem. ONDC will face this challenge and people would opt for big players like Amazon, Flipkart for the service quality and assurance they provide.
yeah government can provides only platform ..in the end small retailers had to do what is good for them ..if they cant provide even a good packaging ...then they should get die...
Of late, even Amazon is proving inefficient. Products for replacement are not collected from customers. We are left with unwanted stuff. And nowhere to go and complain!
We are all indebted to Nandan sir for his contribution to India 🇮🇳 his initiative like Aadhaar, UPI, Fastag, Diksha are all had massive success and many more in the pipeline. His vision about India is truly remarkable. No other countries come close to India when we talk about societal platforms and digital public goods
UPI came from Modi govt. in 2016. Please check your facts. Give some credit to Modi govt. Without demo, people would not have adopted UPI and similar digital payment systems.
@@srinisbir8781 I have closely worked with people who built UPI from ground up. It was initiated by Nandan sir and later went to govt/RBI for approval. I thank Modi for branding the UPI and urging people to adopt. But it was brain child of Nandan

Thank you for explaining about ONDC so well! Good to see that government did not stop at UPI and is launching yet another platform in the digital space :)
Modi government is the one which brought UPI. You are probably confusing UPI with RuPay, which was brought in 2013 by UPA govt. Give credit to Modi govt. when it deserves.
@@srinisbir8781 did he say it was the congress govt who launched UPI? What are you trying to say here? Why did you want him to mention "Modi govt." instead of just govt?
JUST A WILD GUESS, according to me government has always been the seat of power but in recent times big companies have gained a lot of power and to some extend are misusing it, so ONDC can be seen as a counter by governments to keep companies in check.
An issue I see with cheaper products is that, they are "cheap". As important as pricing is for the common Indian buyer, so is a feeling of satisfaction upon buying an expensive stuff. Similar is the mentality when people prefer "branded" products over local ones. I suppose it's all a matter of time before we see which side we align to.
@@S7poetry not books, if suppose you're given two choices between 50 inch tv, which will you prefer? one is 25,000/- has 3000 reviews at 4 stars (has some negative reviews of 1 star at 20%) another is listed at 35,000/- has 1000 reviews at 4.5 stars (has only 50-60 negative reviews, and that also on petty things) I personally would prefer the 2nd option as it feels quality product to me and it has greater chance of sustainability and that extra 10000 on that product would worth it according to me. this is the mentality of like 20-30% buyers, 2-5% of buyers are always in for price whichever cost the most will be good, and the rest 60-70% is our general price sensitive population which buys only the cheap

Logistics solution I will like to point out... The logistics prblm can be solved by integrating local delivery partners and making them the king of their particular own territory of 3-4kms the best example is paper n parcel of mumbai and how they operate with the Dabbawalas. But by keeping the big logistics partners out to some extent.
There are some challenges. But we have great minds like Nandam Nilkine sir and team working on this project. I am sure they would be able to figure out a way to implement this project. But it will be interesting to see how this platform evolves in the coming few years.
The biggest concern shall be quality of service. From Payments to Packaging, Delivery, Return and replacement Policy. Amazon specifically uses a lot of AI and robotics to make the delivery mechanism efficient. Doubt how much intelligence ONDC will use. Competition is always make things better for Consumers. So it's a welcome move.
The state-run comparison site has overwhelmingly more advantages than disadvantages. Here are two solutions for two possible problems: 1. The Indian government must pass a law that forces companies to price their products on the basis of ‘Cost+Profit’: this will prohibit big players form selling unprofitable products in order to drive out small competitors, then dominate the market and massively increase prices. 2. The Indian government must pass a law that forces app and websites to have a ‘Filter’ feature: this way a user chooses what comes first and not the provider. Respect from Macca 🤷♂️♥️🇸🇦 Also, I think a new class of retailers will be born. They will be above scammers and below Amazon and Walmart. Their advantage is that they will have prices and quality above scammers and below Amazon and Walmart. Their disadvantage will be their inability to serve huge customers and quality inconsistency. This happens becuase they are a one-man entity. This class is unable to kill Amazon and Walmart but will carve out the biggest share of the Indian retail market.
@@UnknownUser.ar1 The reality being India already has a Competition Act and Competition Commission of India in order to prevent such predatory pricing by the big players that cause harm to the local industries. However, the principal problem with this is the fact that it becomes really difficult for anyone to prove the direct problems caused by such predatory pricing because the impact is not correlated on a one-to-one basis. Further more, even if such impact is quantifiable, the current state and efficiency of the judiciary means that the small business owners who actually are hurt by these strategies will never have sufficient sustained cash flows to fight out the big players. This is one of the things that government must solve. ONDC is an absolutely brilliant initiative that if implemented right can catapult India ahead of the rest of the world in this space.
Lots of love and respect for your insightful video. We the audiences are vary lucky to have you in this digital platform. Again thanks a lot @think School❤️
Two things I will like to point out. First- The listing paradox can be easily solved by using filters. It can be based on individual preferences. Someone can prefer lower costs over a high number of product sales. While others want the higher reviewed product, etc. Second- This one is just related to the presentation. Your presentation has improved a lot from the past. The while wall used to hurt my eyes. This is better, but I think that if you cover the complete wall with soundproof panels, it will look good (less contrast and so distraction and therefore more attention towards the topic). Just something you can think about. Video was awesome as always.🙂
Hi, well explained 👍. Mr. Modi is a Yogi and with a super spiritual brain. Now the govt has given the platform, we people of Bharath should take it forword 🙏.
Trust is the main problem with the small retailers ...It's very difficult to thrive in these challenging times when you have competition from big players in terms of service quality ..
I want to see this work and proliferate across the world. The future of unethical data is not one I foresee any country solving through legislation in the near to mid-term future. If instead we have a system of checks and balances for data, then that would go a long way to protect the average citizens of not just India, but the world.
What is "Unethical Data"? Why shouldn't a company that has hired talent all around the world to become competitive in every country gather data on its customers to provide them with better services while earning a profit? Data is for everybody. Today it is being exploited by tech giants like Amazon and Flipkart. Maybe in the future every shop will gather data on its customers, give targeted messages to the customers phones and even gather data through a spyware app installed within their customer smartphones that is approved by the customer itself. In the past, when every person in the neighborhood knew the preferences, activities and personal life of every other person in that area, nobody would mind. Now one small bit of data is stored in a data center about a harmless ad click and everyone loses their minds. You want to protect your privacy, get VPN. The vast majority gives a rat's ass about privacy because it saves time to search for things they want.
@@Fastest_Animal Unethically sourced, used, or sold data is a problem that cannot be solved via VPN. Neither I nor this video are talking about data privacy - that is an different topic entirely. This is a hard topic to conceptualize. Buying from a seller like Amazon can seem like a good thing to a consumer. As demonstrated in this video we watched, Amazon was able to provide a platform for businesses to get sales that they otherwise probably wouldn't without using the platform. But by using the platform, Amazon figures out where the consumer money in that industry is spent. Then Amazon is able to put small to medium sized businesses out of business by capitalizing on that sweet spot and their economies of scale. Over short periods, this may save consumers money. Certainly a good thing, right? But over long periods, it tends to create monopolistic environments where a company like Amazon can start raising prices in industries that they've gained control of on their platform. This may not only cause price inflation to consumers, but it tends to stagnate innovation. So product improvements slow down because it is not required to drive sales. In other ares of human society, like many governments around the world, this type of behavior would be considered a conflict of interest, unethical. Depending on the government, this could be a cause for dismissal or even criminal action. The difficulty we have here though is not inherently the act of collecting data nor the act of offering similar products at lower costs. These are important pillars of most economic systems. The challenge with legislating data, compared to a conflict of interest in government, is that it is hard to write legislation that doesn't hamper ethically sourced, used, and so on data that does drive innovation, improve society, and make our world better. I like the solution that was presented in this video because it bypasses having to write incredibly difficult legislation and empowers consumers to make their own personal decisions on purchases while also mitigating the monopolistic impacts of platforms like Amazon. I don't want to see Amazon (and other platform giants) go out of business, I just want to see them fairly compete with small to medium sized businesses as well. The barriers to entry for industries around the world seem to be rising faster than wages. If our societies can take action to lower the barriers of entry into markets, it will increase innovation and generally improve quality of life for everyone.
While I can almost see the Alibaba or Aliexpress influence in this, my biggest worry about this is the amount of Fraud that's going to be flooded in the market. In Amazon or Flipkart, its pretty easy to get a return or refund. But knowing how people are in my country, they are going to figure out a way to circumvent around this as we love contrived conveniences. So unless this platform can match the safety and customer protection conveniences offered by Amazon or Flipkart, I'm afraid that its going to fail.
@@rockfire3290 that's not the purpose of ONDC. It's upto you what you buy. Ondc will just be an open network. Think of a catalog or a yellow-pages book for your city. The concerns that you have raised regarding ONDC is similar to what domestic companies raised way back in 1991, when FDI was about to be introduced. Many experts thought that Foreign players will capture the market due to better quality, better features etc. After 30 years we can see no such thing happened, companies who were innovative were able to survive despite intense competition. So as of now ONDC is in nascent phase, it will take atleast 5 years for people to start adopting this platform. This is a good step by the Govt to ensure small businesses can also survive in an intensely competitive environment of Retail industry. Hats off to the government for this great initiative. This initiative is going to be the next UPI like innovation. ONDC will create a new market for small sellers and small sellers can reach out to more customers remotely.
Although, the idea sounds great at first. It is a total bummer when you look at the details. Here's what I think it will face problems in(opinion of a seller)- 1. Protection to buyers- platforms like amazon and Flipkart have strict policies to ensure it. With multiple platforms involved, who would take the responsibility. 2. Protection to seller- sometimes wrong returns are delivered due to mixup of packages or wrong product provided at the time of return by the customer. I can just raise a safe-t claim on Amazon and get compensation. But in ONDC,Who would pay? 3. Customer service 4. Courier returns- platforms cover the cost for packages that get cancelled in the transit. This would be impossible to impose in ONDC. 5. Customer returns- Right now, platforms allow which return request will be allowed or rejected. But with no skin in the game, platforms would allow people to raise return for the silliest of reasons. Resulting in just massive loss for the seller. Moral of the story- e-commerce is very different from payments and I cringe everytime I see people compare the both.
@Harshit Jain exactly, Indians are good at pure software and hence UPI is a success, but ONDC involves supply chain management and logistics. We are bad at creating hardware and needed infrastructure. I have doubt about success of ONDC
Bhai what I understand that ONDC is just a backend software who needs a interface like UPI who needs Amazon pay to interact so what I think is the service provided by Amazon will be same until you choose only Amazon's logistics and seller also have option to choose their delivery Partner BUT on the rest cases responsibility will be messed up
@@millennialmind9507 correct, in case of UPI, govt only has to cooperate with 20-30 banks and only one product- money. But in ONDC, there is lakhs(if not crores) of sellers and tens of crores of product.

Answer is that all these different elements of the market will run separately in future without the need a centralized marketplace like Amazon / Flipkart...... Vedors, Customers, Warehouses, Delivery parnters etc will connect to a single entity like ONDC or maybe some other single startup. Just because these startups took billions in funding doesn't mean they have to succeed, only the ones with a future proof business model will survive at last.
After sales support is also an important thing to consider while buying expensive goods. I think customers will be more comfortable buying higher priced items from Amazon/Flipkart if it means they can get better support for any grievances. This said for cheaper products which do-not require much maintenance ONDC can be revolutionary.

Thank you for spreading awareness about these government initiatives in perfect way of story telling. Your work and dedication should must be appreciated. 😀
Whatever steps are to be taken it should be taken by the govt. And provide small seller a position in market...otherwise these big gaints will drain out our currency and people
This really looks like a cool way to tackle these tech giants and business tycoons but I just hope that Indian govt doesn't leverage this platform to pressure poor and middle class business owners to pay higher taxes by aligning them into this centralized payment system. If this works out in the favor of the SMEs and middle class BOs then its definitely am example for many countries to learn from India
My take on ONDC product listing which thereby may help solve other problems too is like - 1. Firstly products should be listed which are available as nearby to user locations as possible with cost (filter) of products. 2. And then use ratings, comments n all. This will help users with faster delivery, easy after sales service. This will also help nearby shops as they will also be anle to sell products and compete and grow in market. This will also help delivery centres too as many deliveries can be done by nearby delivery services hence chances to grow and compete in market. And thereby maybe solving supply management and merchant/products hotlisting problems.
I think they have already built a successful model like this.. I am talking about the e catering in railways.. after introduction of E-catering they countered the monopoly of pantry car and brought many small restaurants under the roof.. Now the food while traveling in train is just awesome..
Not awesome at all. The pantry car is still dominating the railway food section. Other restaurants are not reliable and can't even complain about their food to any authority over its quality issue. But I can complain about food quality from pantry car to irctc.
If there food is bad from next time no one will buy eventually they will be out. But when there was only pantry you were forced to take it. Aur complaint kitni suni jaati h ye sb jaante h 😂😂
@@loop7081 complaints in IRCTC are usually taken serious. I have watched it happen effectively. If everyone knows the food is bad then they won't buy it, since it takes time to do so, by then that restaurant would have ripped good enough money.
About listing those products on market space...the govt can use location based suggestions.. like suggesting mom and pop stores nearby first (as mostly they might the ones who can deliver the product at a faster rate but with higher cost) and then those giant market companies on the criteria of their pricing. Further Zomato could use their delivery hand to deliver any thing apart from food items. They could tie up with local stores to deliver items...
ONDC sounds quite promising. Yes there will be initial hiccups with delivery and platform, but hopefully they will get ironed out. Regarding deep discounts, it's a very valid issue but govt can make rules to stop deep discounts (to prevent competition) but that can also have a negative image on the govt as customers who stand to gain in the short term will get frustrated.
This actually helped a lot in learning deep insights of how these giant tech companies are ruling and have established their monopolies in the market. They actually have kicked out many small retailers and sellers from the business. Anyways, ONDC looks powerful but it surely has to fight with obstacles so as to stand out in the market. It surely can help in more innovation and development of economy.
As far as listing the sellers is concerned, there can be a possibility of segmenting the sellers into categories like Established Sellers (Amazon, Flipkart, etc.), Budding Sellers (the brick & mortar sellers) & more.

Another primary concerns of ONDC is the focus on User Experience. UPI was an simple one step interface leading to it's success. This is a much more complex engagement where all stakeholders and users need to have a seamless experience, in order to drive adoption. Even if government hires specialists, I don't trust a govt platform to even remotely match the experience tech startups provide.
true to some extent but there are customers in remote places who does not believe in private players and will prefer to shop from ONDC. Alteast big giants will have fear of government after this and with time who knows it becomes a big success.
Excellent video. India will need better PageRank algorithms to deal with the situation to protect domestic traders. Also India urgently needs its own social networks, search engines, secure messaging and email services.
Since we got skilled IT professionals, what you said is going to happen. As customers, amazon should be preferred only when we are in need of a product that's not available in our country.
There is one thing missing fake products verification. Even on Amazon and Flipcart there are number of vendors selling products which are different from what advertised.
According to me, it will be disastrous if ONDC is not implemented keeping in mind of everyone, like GST was disaster. If the profit of big sellers goes down they will cut the salaries which will again hit the unemployment problem. More the competition, more the offers, lesser the quality. More options, more confusion, more offers, more panic buying. And the customer has to be more smart while making choice. My father is also a businessman, but there should be another way of making them strong in the market. It's not the only way to directly compete them with big fishes. And being the evidence of their previous policies they can't figure out all these even in 2 years. So I'm ready for disaster in the market.
we can’t compare it with UPI. UPI is transfer of money and information. ONDC is transfer of money, information and products. In my opinion ONDC will not be beneficial for Local retailers but it will be beneficial for Indian E-commerce players like Tata and Reliance.
Not really. many small retailers don't go on Amazon or Flipkart etc because marketplaces makes it harder for small retailers to sustain with their own proxy sellers and other marketing strategies tailored based on the data aggregated from buyers on their platform which are not a cup of tea of our local retailers and they lose visibility after a while. It benefits customers but local businessmen are losing business. Flipkart and Amazon are basically stealing away the ideas of products from best selling brands and launch products through their proxy brands and sell and earn huge revenue and killing the original product. That's why many sellers complained about this malpractice where they do all the work to make a quality product and become a best selling product in category and after a while these marketplaces takeover that traffic by launching their copies of these products with all the data in their hand to capitalise and kill competition.. Not just in India, but also in other countries. In US, sustainable shoes brand All birds also faced same issue with Amazon where their best selling Merino wool shoes and tree based material shoes are copied by Amazon and launched with deep discounts.

These would be the major problems :
1.Quality control...
2. Trustable seller...
3. User interface...
4. Possible scams...
5. After Sale service..
Yes, most customers are looking these points.
I think these problems will be solved by sellers or e-commerce or logistics platforms only. Bcz ondc just an open network platform.

Explained it well..
Sure, but competition will make it okay.

Yes I get it
When the same product can be given at cheaper rate then it’s the deal. Suppose same books is being sold by two. The cheaper book will win
Nope, india is very price sensitive not quality sensitive, huge population lives under financial pressure
@@S7poetry not books, if suppose you're given two choices between 50 inch tv, which will you prefer?
one is 25,000/- has 3000 reviews at 4 stars (has some negative reviews of 1 star at 20%)
another is listed at 35,000/- has 1000 reviews at 4.5 stars (has only 50-60 negative reviews, and that also on petty things)
I personally would prefer the 2nd option as it feels quality product to me and it has greater chance of sustainability and that extra 10000 on that product would worth it according to me.
this is the mentality of like 20-30% buyers, 2-5% of buyers are always in for price whichever cost the most will be good, and the rest 60-70% is our general price sensitive population which buys only the cheap
But if you look at the bigger side.. there is a huge chunk of indians including myself who would rather try a product just because it is cheap.

The 'Trivago' Man was really one of the Best Advertisers. Never skipped his AD on TV
Here are two solutions for two possible problems:
Respect from Macca 🤷♂️♥️🇸🇦
Also, I think a new class of retailers will be born.

@@UnknownUser.ar1would love to know more about your insights and idea's if you have any❤
@@UnknownUser.ar1 The reality being India already has a Competition Act and Competition Commission of India in order to prevent such predatory pricing by the big players that cause harm to the local industries.

Agreed
Indian government is planning to introduce PDPB
While I can almost see the Alibaba or Aliexpress influence in this, my biggest worry about this is the amount of Fraud that's going to be flooded in the market. In Amazon or Flipkart, its pretty easy to get a return or refund. But knowing how people are in my country, they are going to figure out a way to circumvent around this as we love contrived conveniences.
So unless this platform can match the safety and customer protection conveniences offered by Amazon or Flipkart, I'm afraid that its going to fail.
it isn't even started yet, it's like an APP where users will tell about the bugs, govt. will fix it.

Ultimately remember all these companies are in the Services sector so its ultimately better user experience and customer support which determines User retention for any such platforms

Good. Amazon Flipkart are not loved by retailers anyways. But I hope the ONDC website remains active all the time.
Although, the idea sounds great at first. It is a total bummer when you look at the details. Here's what I think it will face problems in(opinion of a seller)-
3. Customer service

My take on ONDC product listing which thereby may help solve other problems too is like -
Idea looks good, let's see how it turns out!
Best wishes to all involved in this👍

Top quality case study.. certainly a Food for thought.
As far as listing the sellers is concerned, there can be a possibility of segmenting the sellers into categories like Established Sellers (Amazon, Flipkart, etc.), Budding Sellers (the brick & mortar sellers) & more.
Only the Modi government can do these types of miracles..
I hope this will be a success and become another UPI like hit

Another primary concerns of ONDC is the focus on User Experience. UPI was an simple one step interface leading to it's success. This is a much more complex engagement where all stakeholders and users need to have a seamless experience, in order to drive adoption. Even if government hires specialists, I don't trust a govt platform to even remotely match the experience tech startups provide.
true to some extent but there are customers in remote places who does not believe in private players and will prefer to shop from ONDC. Alteast big giants will have fear of government after this and with time who knows it becomes a big success.
Ultimately..they are coming with their own platform..
Thank you for explaining it so well. Keep it up Sir👍

Oh my god. What a energy and information you have to make these kind of videos. I am sure this is the best channel to get undated information. Thanks
I am also worried about the Quality on this platform too.. there needs to be some control mechanism for Quality control.
we can’t compare it with UPI.

Whenever I use to visit small markets, I used to wonder if there could ever be a connection that can lead even the smallest vegetable vendors to sell online. Here we are 💯💯💯💯
As a consumer i and most will prefer price and not care about from where it comes example if i go to offline store i have to pay more in many cases but in online its much cheaper and affordable.
