I love how he mentions the memories that flood in when he cuts the fresh dill. I started growing dill right around the time my oldest son was born. After the first year leaving a lot of it go to seed i didnt have to plant any more. All of my boys love going down to the garden and picking fresh dill and putting it straight in their mouths.
Its amazing how memories are tied to scents.

This is one of my all time favorite salads from my childhood until now. I do not use water at all, and I do not put in any sugar as I like it tart. My salad includes garlic powder (granulated) and I have recently used some Mrs. Dash (regular) for extra seasoning.
P.S. Dill weed reminds me of my Grandma also. She grew it herself. For pickling she always used the seed heads which are so potent and tasty!
P.S.S. My dad always sorted out only the onions at dinner time. No stinkin' salad for him . . .

When I was growing up, my Father (a Russian immigrant) made the best tomato salad. He used locally grown New Jersey tomatoes (big and juicy), cukes (completely peeled; I do stripes like in your video), and spring onions (just the green stalks, not the white heads). He added equal volumes white vinegar and oil (then it was Mazola - everyone used Mazola for everything; I now use EV olive oil), and a little salt. That's it. The liquid at the bottom was perfect for dunking seeded rye bread. A true Russian tomato salad. I still make it today, many decades later. Please try it the Russian way and see what you think!

I also add, at different times, sliced radishes, cubed avocado (stir carefully!!), celery, bell peppers, montzerella cheese balls, and a little mild or hot chili powder.

I just discovered Cucumber 🥒 salad I loved how you told everyone just how varied this salad is! Me No water, No Vinegar I use 1/2 cup of Italian Dressing and 1 giant tablespoon of Hellmann's Mayo and a fresh or dried Dill...I add Sugar, salt and pepper at the very end after I stir it up!

Grew up in OKLA and we made this (sans tomatoes) from our garden every day. I don't remember ever putting sugar in it. We iced it for an hour or so. Yes, to the dill! Still looks yummy.

my husbands family were all from Germany and this dish was a given at any family meal. We call it Donder and Blitzen or Thunder and Lightning . The dressing was equal parts oil, vinegar and sugar with salt and pepper to taste. Any amount always turned out perfect. Same dressing was used for German potato salad and wilted lettuce and onions but instead of oil bacon drippings were used

You could mix all of the wet ingredients and dill, salt, pepper, vinegar etc.. in a separate bowl, and just pour it over the salad at the end. It looks delicious!

Tomatoes are full of lectins. POISIONIOUS to your cells. Look them up. And cucumbers need to be peeled like tomatoes and be deserved to remove the POISIONIOUS lectins🤔. Do the research
