This is one of my favorite recipes that Shotgun Red taught us. It's delicious! I make it many times through the year, but summer is best!! Rest in peace Sir
I love this salad in summertime, with Italian dressing, all the little bits of vegetables, and anything else in fridge, green peppers, red kidney beans. celery, yum yum
When I was growing up, my Father (a Russian immigrant) made the best tomato salad. He used locally grown New Jersey tomatoes (big and juicy), cukes (completely peeled; I do stripes like in your video), and spring onions (just the green stalks, not the white heads). He added equal volumes white vinegar and oil (then it was Mazola - everyone used Mazola for everything; I now use EV olive oil), and a little salt. That's it. The liquid at the bottom was perfect for dunking seeded rye bread. A true Russian tomato salad. I still make it today, many decades later. Please try it the Russian way and see what you think!
This is one of my all time favorite salads from my childhood until now. I do not use water at all, and I do not put in any sugar as I like it tart. My salad includes garlic powder (granulated) and I have recently used some Mrs. Dash (regular) for extra seasoning. P.S. Dill weed reminds me of my Grandma also. She grew it herself. For pickling she always used the seed heads which are so potent and tasty! P.S.S. My dad always sorted out only the onions at dinner time. No stinkin' salad for him . . .
Nothing trigger's memories more than your sense of smell and taste, it amazing how it brings you back to enjoyable times and things in life. My Mother used to also put about a tablespoon of sour cream in it which is a nice accent to the tangy and sweet.
@@CookingwithShotgunRed Smell memories are very strong. It goes back to primordial instincts. Amazing how it triggers memories. Steve related this smell of dill to his grandmother's pickle-making days--Wonderful!
I grew up in Missouri. We had a very big garden. We had some version of this salad every night in the summer. My Mom used water and cider vinegar and salt. No sugar.
Yum!! When I make A salad like this with liquid and spices, I put my spices in with the vinegar, oil and water to let it all get mixed in evenly before pouring it on the salad.
Hi Red 🍒 love your salad I make this many times but never used raw onion I will certainly add this the next time I especially love this salad with hot toast delightful! Keep those refreshing salad recipes coming God Bless have a wonderful day 💕😋. From the Caribbean love you guys
Boy does that bring back memories. I remember as a kid, mom making that in the summer from the garden. What I would do differently is make the dressing separately so it gets blended first then poured on and tossed.😋👌

This is yummy! I mixed all of the dressing seasonings in separate small bowl until l reached my desired flavor then poured it over the salad. I let it sit for 2 hours and mixed it a couple of times. My family and guests loved it!❤️

This reminds me of my granny (great grandma) she had a garden behind her house as long as I can remember and I remember a bowl of what she called tart salad in her fridge all the time and most of the time she has a bowl of mush melon too. Today I can't eat either without closing my eyes and remembering her!! It triggers other childhood memories that are so precious!! No one ever had her recipes, they were all in her head tho! So I'm definitely gonna have to try this!!
I make this all the time. I add a perfectly ripe avocado and instead of using an oil based dressing, I use a lite poppyseed or Italian dressing. Not as good, but still delicious and saves a lot of calories. For someone wanting to diet and still maintain a healthy and low calorie dish, give this a try.
I love this salad, it's my favorite. A couple of modifications when you make this often. 1st, I don't do well with vinegar, so I use lemon juice instead. I also add, at different times, sliced radishes, cubed avocado (stir carefully!!), celery, bell peppers, montzerella cheese balls, and a little mild or hot chili powder.
You could mix all of the wet ingredients and dill, salt, pepper, vinegar etc.. in a separate bowl, and just pour it over the salad at the end. It looks delicious!
Grew up in OKLA and we made this (sans tomatoes) from our garden every day. I don't remember ever putting sugar in it. We iced it for an hour or so. Yes, to the dill! Still looks yummy.
I really appreciate that the recipe is right here and not on some web site that does not work. I no longer listen to cooks who have their recipes on web sites. This recipe is hitting the spot as I want salad, but do not feel like eating lettuce.
I use sweet onions and chop everything into dices. Roma tomatoes are best. Then ACV, sugar, salt, garlic, parsley flakes, and EVOO. A variation is to add diced avocado and boiled eggs.
I've made that way for years. But I have added fresh tomatillos, and crisp fugi apples. Spices include Italian seasoning, turmeric, and red wine vinegar. No sugar. My all time favorite salads. Just made two last week for me and neighbors.
