Fun fact: The second “engine” in the Chaparral 2J, or fan car, was built from two snowblower motors. It was an experiment in what we now call ground effect. As the car is pulled onto the tarmac, the 2J is able to take corners a lot better than most cars. The problem, however, is it has to stay planted to the ground. Otherwise, you end up with a nasty lifting effect called porpoising, where the car would bounce up due to the loss in suction, and then it would pull itself back onto the road, and it would repeat this process over and over.
Hi Rory, I hope u see this, just wanted to say thank you for a video, that helped me get my very first win! Im normally a single player grinding all the cars and licenses, but thought i was gonna give this online stuff a bash I took your advice, looked at the meta car for the daily race and watched the replay to get some tips, for breaking zones. It worked!! i won my first online race, after 6 attempts, hopefuly onto many more! Thanka again mate!
I'd rather try to tame an old American muscle car rather than a modern Prototype or Formula Car. I find it's easier when I can assume the mindset that the car is always trying to kill me and adjust my driving to the level of sliding that I'm confident I can manage. The modern racecars are so planted that they lull you into a false sense of security, until you step one millimeter over the limit and your race is over because it's swapped ends faster than you can blink. Also, I will hear no Chaparral 2J slander! That's my 800 class racer (with some mild suspension tuning) and it's so easy to drive. Long gears means good traction, and fan car means it's practically glued to the track, if a bit understeery. I play on controller, so I value stability under trail-braking and predictability over outright pace.
@@nickb2049 Eh, you can get some fun with more traditional racing stuff, but getting better tech has been the main reason to do racing in the first place Also, downforce has been a thing in racing since forever, the superbird looks like it does because it was taking adavantage of that lol.
Absolutely brilliant video. Makes me realise that I'm not getting the best from this game. I just want to go get a wheel and immerse myself in these classic and sometimes fruitless creations. Such a well put together video. Thanks Rory!!
The 2J is the scariest car in the game for me because it does have a grip limit but it seems so vague & hidden within the insane traction, so every corner you’re meant to go flat out & hope it works. As opposed to the redbull that will handle everything you throw at it. And the screen shake on it seems abnormally high for some reason.
Mercedes…with the right setup and slick tires, it’s actually great for its PP. I saw the real one at the Mercedes museum in Stuttgart. So awesome to see it in real life. I’ve owned 2 big red Mercedes sedans because of it.
As a Classic American Muscle car fanatic I appreciate your critiques of them lol. We definitely built more for the drag strip than the road circuit then. Definitely love taking them around the track in GT7 though even if they do handle like garbage lol The Jeep was incredible BTW that thing is a monster
I'd say this: The willys was awful on purpose, the whole point was making it so bad to drive. But the fact that the tomahawk is just bad right from the get go it's impressive in the worst way possible lmao
Ah, the red pig aka the waxenberger mercedes. There is only one authentic waxenberger remaining of this legendary racecar in the world. And luckily it`s in a museum in Finland for all to see.
My dad has a 1977 trans am with a 530 WHP LS3 stroker in it. Those cars are terrifying to drive hard with 220 HP from the factory, let alone 530. It's the yellow car on my channel in a few videos.
The video demonstrated that Rory spends the majority of his time in race cars with slicks and aero - which he is very good at. I spend the majority of my time in the game driving standard road cars which are frequently on sports and comfort tyres, so cars like the Citroen, Trans Am and Mercedes Benz 'red pig' are quite normal and pretty benign in the handling. The engine swapped Samba bus and Willys Jeep are indeed awful. The one car that I simply cannot make driveable around Bathurst is a tuned (to Group A spec) Sierra RS500. With no aero able to be added, it's diabolical running over the top of the mountain, even with race soft tyres on. That's my special mention for a terrible handling car.
I mostly drive tuned streetcars on sport tires. Race cars on slicks are boring to me. Nothing beats a well hosted, realistic Touristenfahrten lobby for me.
I didn't find the Trans Am too bad last time I drove it, although PD did revamp the physics of a lot of cars recently? Incidentally the caption said it's a '67 but it's a '77 🙂
When I was a child I saw a Citroen in person, I had nightmares it was chasing me for weeks after. What a hideous looking machine. Tucker had the steering headlamp. ;)
Some frightening motors there. The willie's jeep will definitely put the willie's up you. 😂 The tomahawk is literally good for special stage route x only. Fun vid Rory 👍🏻
I have a challenge for you: "The random setup challenge!". Take any mid-performance car you want to drive, and you like to drive, but then randomize every single setting on the car for 5-10 different setups, try to do a lap with all the random setups, and see how bad some of the setups can get! From completely random setup, i got a Mini that literally couldn't drive straight because of marshmellow suspension and bonkers toe and camber angles, meaning it kept "falling" to one side or the other constantly, and it was a struggle to just make it down a straight, as the faster you went, the quicker the change was from side to side, and eventually the car would just spin itself out when you went fast enough...
Great video Rory. Not only entertaining and funny, but educational too. I liked the cockpit driving view and other views of the cars, good editing mate. Mt Panorama certainly tests a car's handling!
Hey Rory, you should do a video of all the same vehicles but with all the modifications and upgrades possible to each car, then do a setup for each to see how much better you can get each car to go! 🤘🤘
So, I don't know if it's modelled in game, but I know irl with fan cars, you have to keep the revs high, because, like you said, the fans are powered by the engine. If you let the revs drop, the fans don't spin, you don't get the downforce. It's how Nikki won with the BT46
Just a small point, mate - it's Willys, not willies 😉 It was hilarious to watch, though 😄 Edit: had a look in my garage, and found a car, that easily tops all of these - the little Abarth 595 (a fiat 500 basically) with a fully upgraded Civic engine 🫡 I literally spent an hour trying to do one lap without spinning, with various suspension & diff settings. Still failed. Completely undrivable 😅
What's funny is, I upgraded my Sambabus and it's a beautiful beast, one of my favourite vehicles to drive. I think you may have removed the suspension or something. Great video though!

My dad had a black 1980 trans am with the 6.6 liter V8. His biggest upgrade was water injection. Love this.
The Roadster isn't so bad. It's not fast enough to be truly dangerous to handle. With the engine swap, though, it's beyond a handful.

controversial take here, but I've felt that down force and technology has started taking away the fun of racing.

There's a guy on GT7 who set up the Super Bird and it'll destroy most cars.

the Citroen was use in National Lampoons European Vacation and I loved seeing that car everytime I watched the movie lol
Within the families we can the tomahawk “stupidity” because of its un drivable status 😂
It's not undriveable. It just takes practice.
