The CRAZIEST POSTPONEMENT in Monday Night Football HISTORY | Steelers @ 49ers (1978)

- What happened to Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin in their Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals was absolutely tragic, and the NFL absolutely made the right call by postponing the game. But what you might not realize is that this was not the first time in MNF history that there was controversy about whether or not the game should be played. Because in week 13 of the 1978 NFL season, when the San Francisco 49ers played the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wake of the assassination of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, the NFL came under a ton of heat and a ton of criticism for not moving the game to a different date. This is the story behind the 1978 49ers and the controversy surrounding that game

This has to have been one of the hardest videos to make ... Prayers to Damar
Thoughts and Prayers for Damar Hamlin
Praying for Hamlin.. I do clearly remember this postponement discussion in 1979. It was shocking what happened city hall and equally shocking how close it was to the Leo Ryan tragedy which happened the year before.
‘78
Dan White also had ties to Jim Jones. Bay Area media still has annual retrospectives about the events of November '78, but as time has passed, they don't provide as much perspective about how influential Jones was in city politics.
@@brianoneill7186 And I'm sure you know Jim Jones had ties to Mayor Moscone. Joe Thomas, the 49ers GM at the time also wanted the game postphoned. But that was because he was convinced someone would try to shoot him. Thomas was a truly awful GM and was fired after that season ended. I remember watching some of this game and was a bit surprised in light of the day's events it was being played. Dianne Feinstein has often said that the 49ers winning the Super Bowl in '82 helped heal the city from this awful day.
Oddly, the NFL is very hypocritical about this issue. A few years ago, a Texas Ranger was murdered in the line of duty. The Dallas Cowboys wanted to honor the martyred Ranger with a pre-game ceremony. Commissioner Roger Goodell ordered them not to do it.
@@toddhawley2226 Although well short of a sellout, the attendance was announced as over 51,000(tickets sold). However, the traffic jams and diversions throughout the city due to unrest, and security measures at Candlestick resulted in many fans not making it to their seats until halftime.
I was there last night. Truly unbelievable. Prayers up for Hamlin.
Where were you? I was in section 212
@@Brian-dh3vq cant even imagine being there, serious props to the bengals fans last night
Did the stadium keep you guys aware of what was going on? Did y'all know about the CPR? That had to be really scary for those in attendance. I bet a lot of people used their phones. Being there live had to be so surreal.
@@Fencellisk I have ESPN+ so I watched the broadcast on my phone and found out what happened.
@@Brian-dh3vq ok. So no announcement on the stadium?
My thought and prayers are with Damar Hamlin and his family.
Mine are too.
I agree with you guys my prayers are for damar 😢
In the 1971 season, Detroit Lions receiver Chuck Hughes actually did die on the field from a heart condition. The game was still played to completion.
There was only a minute left at the time for the record, game was about over at that point and decided. The Bears, whom the Lions were playing pretty much ran the clock out afterward.
@@ajk It's true there was only a minute left, but the game was still being decided. The Lions had the ball at the Bears 37 trailing just 28-23 at the time, so they still could have won.
@@TheStapleGunKid Because thst’s the important thing: Winning. Not a player’s life. 🙄
@@a.grimes4202 thats kinda the point. The players today are more empathetic and more connected than before. What happened in 1971 didn't happen yesterday. I'm not condoning 1971, and I'm not calling the 2023 players weaker by comparison. Just saying I think we are improving. Wishing Hamlin a full recovery.
@@a.grimes4202 I didn't say that. In any case, it's not like stopping the game would have brought him back to life.
I really hope and pray for the full recovery of Hamlin. It even made the news in Australia.
Shout out to Bengals fans for being both respectful and classy during this entire situation. I feel like some fan bases might have been less graceful during a similar situation. Good job Cincinnati.
Who Dey nation is a real one
can't believe they actually have class
At a time like that it really does bring out the best in some people. Here's hoping Damar continues to recover.
The Cincinnati fanbase have always been pretty chill compared to a good few either ones.
To compound matters, San Franciscans were still reeling from the Jonestown Massacre, in which Rep. Leo Ryan was murdered prior. November 1978 was a dark, traumatic month.
Dark times
Unfortunately, America has a tradition of gunning down its best and brightest, including Ryan.
I remember when Dallas Stars forward Richard Peverley collapsing on the bench and wanting to go back in after being revived.
I remember Yuri Fischer collapsing on the Red Wings bench in 2005, nearly died and ended his playing career.
I'm a stars fan and this was my first thought.
I remember that. It was I believe against the blues back in 2015 if I’m not mistaken
Almost 3 years ago, St. Louis defenseman Jay Bouwmeester collapsed during the hockey game. That was really scary too.
@@worldsgreatestdude1784 It was against my team, the Blue Jackets
I remember watching that Steeler game, but didn't remember that was when Mosconnoi and Milk were killed.
I'm not surprised they didn't postpone the game. Those times weren't the era of 'breaking news"
Also, Chuck Hughes (Lions TE) had DIED during a game in '71 and the game wasn't even stopped. I remember hearing that news report(I was 6)
Yeah that game was'nt in fact.
The nfl didn't postpone after JFK was killed
I remember the Harvey Milk killing, i never knew it was on this date
@@andrewgrove1691 Pete Rozelle later called that his biggest regret as commissioner. The AFL did postpone games until after the final week. Incredibly, Wake Forest and NC State played a college game *that night*--I guess the logic was the teams were probably already on site, they may as well play.
I was at a Maryland State Boys High School Championship game and the man who sang the National Anthem collapsed after the first verse, he was carried off in a stretcher, he was moving his arms, we all sang the anthem in unison, Bob Wade who is the public school athletic commissioner then ordered both teams to take 10 more minutes of warm ups before tipping off. The singer was fortunately released from the hospital the next day, it was just a bad reaction to a medication he was taking. But it scared us all who were there.
MLB postponed a baseball game when umpire John McSherry collapsed of a heart attack on the field, coincidentally in Cincinnati.
Prayers to all the football players who have died during a game or who where injured terribly. My uncle was killed during a game in 1944. He was the quarterback for the Wisconsin Badgers. He was only 17. After a play everyone went to the sidelines except for Allen Shafer. He lay dead from a hit to his chest while blocking for a running back. It was big news in Madison for a couple weeks, but then largely forgotten after. I would like to think that after all these years and with all the improved equipment someone would figure out how to protect the chest of players. I hope the young man who was injured last night recovers. I also hope THEY figure out a way to protect the players chest. Allen Shafer suffered a pulmonary edema (hemorrhage of the lungs. There is an article on the web. His number was 83. November 2006.
His number was retired in November 2006
I think you handled that intro really well. Good job and all the best to Damar.
So you mean to tell me that Pete Roselle was the originator of Ball is Life!?!? I love it!!🤣😂
Chuck Hughes died in a game. A Broncos player died in the locker room during a preseason game.
I have seen this happen now once a year for three consecutive seasons in three different sports in three different magnitudes of stakes.
A St. Louis Blues player had a heart attack on the ice. A college coach had a heart attack on the court.
Chris pronger was hit with the puck
This also brings to mind the worst decision that Pete Rozelle made in his entire life. He had the NFL plays games the weekend following the assassination of JFK. The AFL did not play that weekend.
Specifically to that, a *lot* of people have to answer for it, and they won't. Makes the NFL playing a minor inconvenience in comparison.
When the 60th comes the day before Thanksgiving, watch how the media will almost celebrate it, by honoring the same people (though not in body obviously) who were conspirators as heroes, FFS
This is crazy. From a tackle made by Roethlisburger to someone dying. Football is secondary to what Hamlin's condition.
This guy is LITERALLY the Football equivalent of COSGROVE! Whenever A crazy event happened one day, He'll find a VERY SIMILAR classic incident to talk about next. Unreal. Prayers 🙏 for Damar Hamlin.
Cosgrove is a great channel too
I was watching live in the UK and had some major flashbacks to the Christian Eriksen incident. Let's hope that Hamlin has a similar recovery to Eriksen which has seen him return to play at a high level.
"And God-willing it doesn't happen again"
Damn right Jag, damn right.
What's really wild about this situation. Moscone and Milk were killed 10 days after Leo Ryan was killed in Jonestown. Ryan represented a district close to SF and represented Redwood City, which is where the 49ers trained at the time (though the border between districts was in Redwood City, so he may not have represented that part of town). Just a very sad time in the city/areas history.
My best wishes for a speedy recovery for Damar and my condolences to Uche Nwaneri’s family🙏🏾
Even if the game had been sold out, ABC affiliate KGO San Francisco probably wouldn't have carried it anyway.
They (and the other network stations in San Francisco) probably carried non-stop news coverage through that.evening
On October 24, 1971, the Detroit Lions were playing the Chicago Bears. Wide Receiver for the Lions, Chuck Hughes, had caught a pass in the fourth quarter and was sandwiched in a tackle. Just a few plays later, with 63 seconds left in the game, he collapsed on the field. The cameras showed him rapidly panting, helpless on the turf in a vain attempt to stay alive.
I've never forgotten those images. He became the first and only NFL player to die in a game.
The game concluded and 50 minutes later he was pronounced dead.
Yesterday with the injury to Damar Hamlin, all the announcers I heard said nothing like this has ever happened before. But it has.
I was twelve years old when that happened and the event stayed with me for weeks.
If you could report on that game, Official JaguarGator9, it would be of benefit to all.
The NFL released this statement on the day of the game:
"Tonight's Buffalo Bills-Cincinnati Bengals game has been postponed after Buffalo Bills' Damar Hamlin collapsed, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced.
Hamlin received immediate medical attention on the field by team and independent medical staff and local paramedics. He was then transported to a local hospital where he is in critical condition.
Our thoughts are with Damar and the Buffalo Bills. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
The NFL has been in constant communication with the NFL Players Association which is in agreement with postponing the game."
To me, this sounds like the NFL trying to cover itself against a lawsuit that will undoubtedly be filed.
In contrast, the NFL Players Association released this announcement last night that read:
"The NFLPA and everyone in our community is praying for Damar Hamlin. We have been in touch with Bills and Bengals players, and with the NFL. The only thing that matters at this moment is Damar’s health and well being."
This statement sounds sincere, honest, and concerned.
I had never even known about Chuck prior to seeing this comment section. Well written, sir
I'm familiar with Harvey Milk since I have a transgender sister and Milk was one of the first openly gay politicians.
That being said, you wanna see what NOT to do? Look at WWE and the Owen Hart tragedy at the 1999 Over the Edge PPV.
At the same time, when Larry Dierker had a heart attack three weeks later all sorts of players and fans were calling bullshit after the game was postponed. It's a no-win situation.
Next to Hamlin, I got really scared when Saivion Smith went down at Foxboro during the Patriots Lions game, how he collapsed without any major physical contact made me think it was something else just as bad as Damar Hamlin, his dad and uncle were in that game thankfully as it was his first game after called up from the practice squad.
Another injury that had happened with another Lion was Reggie Brown a fellow Austinite, who went to a rival high school of mine and was knocked out and not breathing in the Jets Lions game in 1997. Unfortunately his injury was career ending. It's very sad how dangerous can the NFL be out of nowhere, these poor athletes didn't sign up for life threatening moments like these and most don't think it could happen.
I thought people where talking about the Reggie Brown collapse that happened when he was in Georgia but I guess it was the Lions game.
I heard this on the radio. Damar is still unconscious and in critical condition. His vitals are getting better so hopefully he will recover soon
We can still think about what to do for the game while praying for Hamlin. His health is important, but the doctors are doing everything they can for him and not playing the game or finishing it won't affect his outcome
Ikr Skip's comment was pathetic but the game itself has got to matter at some point or just say that the game is over and give the W to the Bengals.
Praying for Damar Hamlin 🙏🙏
I pooped my pants at four, and boldly mounted that Rollercoaster....
Hoping hamlin has a speedy recovery. 🙏
Prayers up to Damar and his family😭🙏❤️

I was 3 years old when the assassinations in San Francisco happened, so I have no memory of this day. I actually learned about this tragic event 15 years later when it was mentioned in a book about the 49ers. One particular thing I remember from the book is that 49ers general manager Joe Thomas, who fans blamed for the team's losing ways, wanted the game cancelled because he was afraid that some angry fan would try to shoot him. That's when Eddie Debartolo knew it was time to fire Thomas, and the team's fortunes would begin to turn with the hiring of Bill Walsh and drafting of Joe Montana the next year.
Joe Thomas was a dirtbag.
that just shows you how horrible the 49ers fan base is , cowboys are annoying yes but niners fans are violent
I miss when the 49ers actually played in the city of SF. It’s probably for the best that they don’t these days, but still, I miss it.
Remember...the NFL played two days after the President was shot (albeit Pete Rozell later considered it the biggest mistake in his tenure as commissioner)
Paul CBS never showed any games following the JFK murder that weekend. Also I don't think (correct me guys if I am wrong)those games on that horrible weekend in Nov 1963 was even aired on radio. FYI Lee Harvey Oswald was shot and killed about a hour before the kickoff of the early 1pm(ET) as well. So even if a couple of radio stations had to broadcast those NFL games, I am sure it was cancelled for the breaking Oswald murder news.
@@americangiant1003 They weren't shown, but they were played...
I knew it was only going to be a matter of time this dude was going to post this after what happened last night.
I hope we’ll still be able to play Football tho, Praying for Damar and everything but this is wild… I just hope everything will be returned to normal
Football doesn’t matter as much as a player’s life.
@@a.grimes4202 at some point it's gotta matter or else just award the W to the Bengals and don't play the game.
@@runrafarunthebestintheworld If the game isn’t resumed and finished neither side should get a W, L or T.
I remember after 9/11, the NFL delayed Week 2 until the end of the season.
They didn’t bother doing this in 1971 when some guy died on the field
I'm curious as to the logistics about how the NFL will end up handling all this.
I'm as sorry as anybody for what happened to Hamlin and hope and pray he overcomes his situation 🙏. That said, it'll be interesting to see what and/or when the NFL ends up doing with the last 3 quarters-plus of that suspended game in the wake of this tragedy. Wonder also if they'll be extra concerned about the kind of hits like he took there.
I think it would either be chalked up as a tie if they don’t want to replay it or it would be postponed and restarted
The game will likely be played later, policy prevents the NFL from cancelling the game
@@yamingizzo7186 Oh, okay, hadn't necessarily heard of such a policy. I've also heard people talking about the game possibly being double forfeited, although I don't know if the league really would go that far.
The best solution: declare it a 0-0 tie. Yes, it will complicate the seeding for the AFC teams, but it eliminates the need to replay the game and all the complications that go with it.
This happens in 1971 between the Bears-Lions game
He has a video covering this.
A-EFFIN'-MEN BROTHER!! Some scary stuff for sure! I am a Bills fan and I could give two poopies if they will go all the way this year! I just want that kid, and yes he is a kid, to be OKIE DOKIE and live a great life!!
Inappropriate to place a f-bomb between the a and the men
@@thomasnorman4221 OKIE DOKIE Jim Bakker!
They played the full schedule on the Sunday following JFK's assassination. They finished the Chuck Hughes game in 1971. They finished the Hank Gathers game in 1990.
Actually the Hank Gathers game was cancelled(along with the rest of the WCC tournament in 1990)
JaguarGator: I have a scenario that might be worse than this:
Imagine two games that HAVE TO BE PLAYED, as they both determine the conference champions for the NFL title game; or whether playoffs are necessary.
The Chicago Bears had to win 7 Dec 1941 against the Chicago Cardinals to tie the Packers. The Dodgers *(yes the football Dodgers)* were tied with the New York Giants entering the day. That day the latter two teams would play each other to determine who would advance in the Eastern Conference.
Because the playoff game between the Packers & Bears would be scheduled for Dec 14th if needed; and because the All-Star game was Jan 4th: with Christmas and New Year's intervening; and teams needing to know where to travel - and due to possible train delays from inclement weather - since the games being already both further in progress than the Bills-Bengals game, they had to finish game.
Imagine finishing a game AFTER you heard of a terrorist attack. Imagine two games happening as such, with the latter being of HIGHER stakes in the standings; but none of football is on your mind.
To complicate things, if an American Football Leauge (1940-1941) game involving New York & Milwaukee that went into overtime ended in a tie, there would be chaos.
The New York team due to host would have to travel for what would otherwise be a home game had the Dodgers' game ended in a tie. And under current NFL game playing rules, that is exactly what would have happened in today's tackling and scoring system.
And since the NFL is was a monopoly regulated under the leauge, it meant something major. War efforts would be forced to be postponed!
Praying for Damar 🙏❤
Hi Nathan
Not to mention a 2008 movie starring Sean Penn. Which won him a Best Actor Oscar.
Should’ve went to Mickey Rourke
Damar has made a complete recovery which is great, but it’s significant to acknowledge that the injury wasn’t a typical football issue. Hamlin had a cardiac attack as a result of a million to one shot resulting from the fact that he was hit at the precise microsecond that his heartbeat was most vulnerable.
This same problem actually happened to a high school baseball player from my town who was hit in the chest with a batted ball at the very worst possible moment. Unfortunately, he didn’t receive the immediate help that Hamlin did and we lost him.
At any rate, keep in mind that it wasn’t a normal football injury. It was an extremely rare cardiac problem.
But yet, the biggest reason why the game was *NOT* moved to 24 hours later was very likely the pressure from ABC. They didn't want a postponement of _Happy Days_ , _Laverne & Shirley_ , _Three's Company_ and _Taxi_ , all of which were some of the highest-rated shows on TV at the time. Trying to play it on November 28, 1978 would have been a huge financial disaster for ABC since it would have seriously affected ABC's ratings at the very end of the all-important November "sweeps" period for Nielsen ratings.
Yep there might be a similar situation happening right now with last night's game. Since Bengals Bills was broadcasted on ABC I don't think ABC will be willing to do a 8 pm game in the coming weeks since they have new episodes of the Rookie and Will Trent on Tuesday and Wednesday with Abbott Elementary.
@@runrafarunthebestintheworld I’d almost agree, but since it’s not a Nielsen “sweeps” rating period, there is more flexibility on the part of ESPN/ABC. Back in 1978, “sweeps” ratings were EVERYTHING to the networks, hence my comment.
When CBS got Patriots/Chiefs and Bills/Titans on weeknights in 2020 Norah O'Donnell was more Karen than she usually is (even though neither cut into the CBS Evening News)
@@mgb4692 she went all dan rather karen over that one. and nfl had no problem switching games around during covid two seasons ago. its all about their 'sympathy' bottom line now.
While I agree Rozelle deserves almost or all of the blame for having the NFL on the weekend after the JFK murder, with happened in Nov. 1978, I put most of the blame on then CEO of ABC. While the NFL had just overtaken MLB as America's most popular sport, Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley to this date over 45 years later for that combined hour had some of the most watched scripted entertainment shows in US Television history. So you are correct Sacto.
A friend of mine from high school bought her 10 year old son tickets for this game as a Christmas present. He told her that he wanted to go to a game with just her and leave dad and older brother at home. They stopped for something to eat and she read about the toy drive. When they got home she said he went to his bank and got $20 of his Christmas money out for the Damar Hamlin toy drive.
Last night was a scary thing we all witnessed....I have experienced similar moments where I passed out or fainted but snapped right out of it and came to
.....last night it was so subtle but the imagery was a powerful way to interpret our vulnerability as humans
According to the Bills Hamlin suffered Cardiac Arrest and was revived on the field. He was taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center and is still in critical condition after being intubated
That CPR probably brought him back.
I tell you, that crowd (tHeY dId CpR fOr NiNe MiNuTeS!!!!!!!!!1) is just as bad as all the hardcore anti-vax cretins.
praying for Hamlin to pull through and make a full recovery
Reminds me of what happened during "The Federation's" (aka WWE) Pay-Per-View event when before airing, Owen Hart was supposed to come down to the ring on a harness. The harness gave way and Hart fell to his demise. nstead of calling the event off, they went ahead with the event, though everyone in that venue seen what happened. I tuned into the event late and wasn't aware until Monday Night Raw.
I'm glad that the NFL had enough sense to shut the game down after what had happened to Damar Hamlin.
It was during _Over The Edge_ in 1999. WWE Network released a heavily-edited version of the show on its service a few years back. It's the first time the show was commercially released.
Even Dr. Sutterer said this is really rare where commotio cortis where a blunt force hit to the chest that disrupts the heart into cardiac arrest usually happens with kids. Their ribcage isn't developed to protect against those hits. Usually this happens in baseball or lacrosse where the ball his either hit or thrown and hits the person's chest causing that incident. The only treatment is CPR and AED shocks to the heart as quick as possible. In this case, the medical staff did the CPR and AED shocks almost immediately. Just waiting to see what UC hospital is going to say.
I remember a situation like that where a lacrosse player was hit by a ball in the chest at the split second pause in a heartbeat and his heart stopped and he died.
@@RCVictoryLane This is the third time I have seen this happen. A St. Louis Blues player had a heart attack on the ice. A college coach had a heart attack on the court.
On the 49'ers roster,I noticed a former Bill,Heisman Homicide.
An NHL player for the Dallas Stars, Rich Peverly literally died after leaving the ice and sitting on the bench. He was revived, and his first question was if it was his shift.
Great video even though the thumbnail was misleading. Thoughts and prayers are with Damar Hamlin and his family.
After the Hamlin Incident, I think the NFL should have Mandatory Rules for defibrillators in every stadium to Revive Players like European Soccer did after the Christian Eriksen Incident.
Chris I think it will happen sooner than that. I think defibrillators will become mandatory by the start of this year 2022/23 NFL playoffs at the latest.
I have been trained in first aid and I would have thought that the training staffs already do have an AED for this purpose. If they don't they should definitely now.
Going back to last night's (January 2nd, 2023) game, the NFL should consider terminating the game, and give Cincinnati a 7-3 victory, barring a forfeit.
A final decision on whether to play games on the weekend of January 7th-8th be held off until Friday (January 6th).
If Damar Hamlin is still alive, the Week 18 games would proceed as scheduled.
But if, Heaven forbid, Hamlin passes away on or before Friday, the NFL should cancel the final weekend of the regular season and not make those games up.
Because the injury occurred so early by game clock standards, the declaration of a 0-0 tie is not out of the question.
Alt. I think if Damar is still alive Friday 1/6/23, they will still play the regular season finale on schedule that weekend. And as Sacto says just award this tragic game a tie for the Bills and Bengals.
With the Grammys and Daytona 500, both scheduled around the President's Day holiday weekend/later in Feb. I don't think the NFL and CBS/Fox wants to delay the Super Bowl any longer by postponing the current last week of the regular and the entire post season unless they have too.
If it becomes inappropriate to have NFL games on the weekend of January 7th-8th, I think those games will simply be cancelled and not rescheduled.
The league has announced that the suspended Buffalo/Cincinnati game won't be resumed this week (January 3rd--6th).
I guess the game won't be resumed at any later date
🙏 for Hamlin
Correction, the Hank Gathers game was suspended and ultimately cancelled
Sincere thoughts and prayers for Damar.
YO WTF IS THIS THUMBNAIL!?!?
because of this incident ; i googled people who died while playing college football and it's eye opening to say the least. i had heard that there were people who about 100 years ago wanted to ban football due to the violence
I seen my nephew collapse on a high-school football field. Not knowing what happened. Only to have him have surgery on his brain. And having to wait to see the outcome. I know what this family is going through. My prayers are definitely with them. My nephew come out of his surgery and went on to graduate college. Thank God in Heaven. I hope for a full and speedy recovery for Hamlin.
Not only did Chuck Hughes of the Lions die on the field in 1970 during a game, not only did the game not stop, but MNF showed it AS PART OF THE HALFTIME HIGHLIGHTS and Howard Cosell did not mention the death.
Being 1970, i wouldnt be surprised if they didnt actually know he was dead yet. Not saying its right, to show someone laying motionless on the field but information traveled a lot slower back then
It is true that highlights of the 1971 game were shown with the other games, and Cosell didn’t mention Hughes by name. But he somberly noted there was a tragedy, and had reason to think the public knew about Hughes’ death. His tone was respectful and somber through the discussion, and ended with how the game was overshadowed by tragedy. ABC did not include footage of the play on which Hughes collapsed in the segment. From having watched it, I think Cosell and ABC handled a hard situation in a reasonable way.
And yes, it is true they did not stop the game.
Prayer for Damar
In 1971 a Detroit Lions player died on the field during a game. There was just over one minute left on the clock. The game was played to the end. Not like Hamlin is a unique event.
No team deserves to win the Super Bowl this year more than the Buffalo Bills
Well, Rozelle didnt postpone any games following Kennedys assassination.... who knows what he was thinking
Cancel this game. It doesn’t need to be played. Can’t expect players to be able to focus whenever it is played, which I don’t believe it should. Call it a 0-0 tie.
Call it a Bengals win.
Remember that day. Have always wondered if the Niners considered a postponement.
I'm sure NBC had a big movie on that night my Mom just had to watch:)
After shouting occurred during moment of silence, Myron Cope said on Steelers radio that 'there are disproportionately more coo-coos in this town'
My dad is from Pittsburgh and he is really sad about it since he was from the rocks. Prey for damar.
"Politicians used to be more noble"
"Shot, killed AND assassinated"? How does that work?
On March 30, 1981, President Reagan was shot at 6 times and was rushed into emergency surgery to save his life. That night, the NCAA decided to move forward with the championship game between North Carolina and Indiana.
WHAT? IS THAT TRUE?
WHAT? IS THAT TRUE?
@@CatherineJessicaNatof 100% true. Easy Google search.
They did however cancel the LSU/UVA third place game (which hasn't been played since)
@@CatherineJessicaNatof Yup. True story. Unlike with JFK in 1963, the Heads of the NCAA and then main TV partner NBC contacted then VP GHW Bush, Sr. office directly and they got the ok to play at around 7pm (ET)about 2 hours before tip off. Right before 7pm, the White House and Reagan's Doctors had a press conference to announce that it was an almost 100% chance he would recover following his surgery.
FYI same thing happened with the Oscars airing at that night and time around 8-11pm ET. They went on with the ceremony at the last minute after that event was also on the verge of being cancelled.
Well well done
7:38 Great example of why Congress needs term limits.
🙏🙏 Prayers to Damar Hamlin
Prayers up for Damar Hamlin
This is so sad man
I was literally there, although Damar is fine now, I hope and pray for his family.
Late 70’s the AFC central was tough. LUV YA BLUE!
the big difference is you can sure as fk bet that if you put that 1978 situation into 2023 that game sure as fk would have been 'postponed' for an obvious reason. abc would do it-no problem today. it's called 'appeasing'.
Last night was devastating. You have all kinds of stuff go through your mind like how long was his brain without oxygen and did he have a condition nobody was aware of? I pray first that he survives, and second that he is able to resume his career. You don't want people getting crippled or killed over a sporting event.
Possibly heart rhythm problems but who knows.
"It is hard to transition to another topic, but here's another time when the league should have canceled the game because someone died."
I'm sorry, JG, but if you had left today's video with prayers for Hamlin, and said "I'll see you tomorrow," we would have understood. The video topic just seems opportunistic instead of a tribute.
Let me add, I think you do an incredible job finding events from the past that connect with events in the present. Many times, we either learn from the past, or we do worse than if we just spiked the ball on every play. I am amazed how you crank these videos out every day, plus two college videos each week, and when you said you were doing this on top of law school and other stuff, and the quality of your videos never suffered, I was and am in awe. I just think this was the wrong call.
Yeah, seeing what suddenly happened to Damar Hamlin was very shocking, and I really hope he'll be alright and can make a full recovery.
I guess Scorpio didn’t get his next ransom payment from Callahan like the mayor had promised
This was a really dark time for our city (bay area cat here). Pretty crazy that they decided to play the game, but then again money and logistics speak volumes.
The guy is still alive, he didn't die.
Wrong. They were not team officials. They did what they should have done played their game And Harvey milk wasn’t even a 49 ers fan. He didn’t like football
Praying. for Damar Hamlin
Interesting time to post a video about this kinda like your trying to piggy back off whats going on now.
Thats unfair
In light of what happened last night, this upload is more than a little tasteless.
Why do I have to scroll this far down to find this? This is like the day after 9/11 uploading "The Craziest Plane Crash in History!"
@@flard1754 No kidding. This is malicious exploitation of a horrendous situation.
What about Dennis Bryd injury? That was very scary as well
Didn’t he get unparalyzed?
Yes . Mths of rehabilitation and prayers. Later he died in car accident. Still a scary situation
His story was turned on into a made for TV Movie call Rise and Walk which premiered on Fox based on the book he wrote. It’s available on RUclips.
Do one on Chuck Hughes. Seriously, I dont know if the game went on or not, but im sure it did.
It did there were about 5 minutes left in that game when Hughes had his heart attack on the field
I honestly thought that this video was going to be about the only time a player died on the field in the NFL in 1972.
1971
