Olivier has mastered so well how to play with Bechet‘s vibrato, true he uses the same original vintage Buescher Model Bechet which belonged to Bechet himself !

Olivier Franc is without doubt the finest soprano saxophone player in the noble genre of Bechet Jazz Music. His playing has the highest technical quality and most importantly, his technique never strays into the realm of intellectual intrusion. One of the qualities of Franc's musical approach, is to subordinate his technique in order to reveal the unrevealed discipline of humility that is an essential part of a great artists contribution to his chosen Art. Olivier Franc shows deep understanding of what makes art , and separates Art from artifact. He has no peers in this, he is the outstanding player of this generation.

    • @adticoalu

From what I can tell, Mr. Franc basically was making sure the octave vent pad wasn't sticking so he can execute the gliss nice and clean. He's using an older Buescher True Tone soprano (which previously belonged to his mentor, the great Mr. Sidney Bechet). The older style octave key lever mechanism can get somewhat tricky to execute during certain passages. Also, the possibility of the pad sticking due to moisture from playing could also add another bump to overcome. So quickly pressing down the lever right below the upper octave key to manually open it up can somewhat help overcome the obstacle.
