Alternative: a dog shelter simulator that starts off like nintndogs (feeding, cleaning, caring for the dogs) but slowly you have papers and news reports about an infection spreading and boom, your in a zombie survival horror held up in a dog shelter, and the better you took care of the dogs the more loyal they are and help you survive

Dragon Age origins has best boi. You can take him into battle with you, get him to search around and find items in the area, play as him, interact with him while out and about, calling him a good boy and petting him, have unique cute dialogue options when hanging out at camp and ask him to "clean" you up from the blood after battle. 10/10 solid dog, you just have to find him depending on your class and race in the beginning of the game.

Haunting Ground is the game you're thinking of. The dog is your only companion and means of defense. You need to be kind and pet him consistently to get the good ending. It's for the PS2, so aspects of it are definitely rough but it is such a good premise for the game mechanic. It's a horror game where you have no power so it sticks with you.

There's this horror game called Lost In Vivo, where your motivation for going through spooky areas and fighting the monsters is to save your pet Corgi. Its a game that really spoke to me because saving my dog is the only think I can think of that would get me to wander into a Silent Hill-esq nightmare world.

Wait but the dog from Fable 2 was pretty good. He was useful for both fighting and finding treasure for you, you could name him, pet him, give him treats, and even teach him tricks. And after you become super attached to the good boy he ACTUALLY SACRIFICES HIMSELF TO SAVE YOU AND THEN AT THE END YOU CAN CHOOSE TO REVIVE HIM AND GO ON ADVENTURES WITH HIM IN AN OPEN WORLD GAME. 10/10 good boy

It shouldn't take that long if you know what you're doing. You just have to get the Howl of the Kubrow quest, get the egg from that, and farm your way up to Phobos to get to the void so you can get an Argon Crystal for the Incubator Power Core. Or, you could spend the 50 starter platinum to get an Incubator Power Core. But, yeah, after that you're going to have to wait 2 days for it to hatch. After that you'll have to mature it for combat, which takes no time.
4:19 Reminds me of my first time playing Kenshi, i bought a dog nearly the very beginning and before even hiring a companion. It's a miracle my boy survived to elderhood.
What you feel with dogs is the same feeling I get when I see a guitar laying around. Just let me PLAY it, give me at least like some basic ass ocarina of time style button inputs for single notes, and I'd be floored.

The doggo in Fallout New Vegas is one of the coolest and useful companions in a video game. Very customizable and detailed, with its own quest line with different paths available. And YES he can be pet at any time!

Rex has the health of a wet napkin on survival, and charges every enemy!... He dies INSTANTLY the moment you encounter any enemy whatsoever. It's almost hilarious.

There are literally dogs everywhere in far cry 5 and far cry new dawn and you can pet every single one of them with complete animations. They even bark and wag their tails afterwards.

Haunting Ground for Ps2 had perfect doggo. Hewie sticks with you the entire game and is absolutely necessary to take care of.

If you have 360, play Fable 2. You don't build a narrative relationship, just stats but you can pet the dog, teach him tricks (based on how much the dog likes you or you probably just have to find a skillbook or something, I don't remember), he sniffs out hidden treasures etc. Probably the best dog companion in games up to date.
I think the Blair Witch game actually utilizes the mechanics of having a dog by having it track things, perform commands, letting the player pet it, and giving it attention to keep the player's sanity up.

The Blair witch "let me introduce myself"
Haunting Ground was the best video game incorporating a dog in it. You could train the dog, give the dog treats, play fetch with the dog, have the dog sniff out stuff, have him attack pursuers, have him alert you when they're coming, AND you could pet the dog. A lot of the success from the game comes from Hewie (the dog) himself helping you, and even one of the endings related to how you treated the dog prior to a certain point in the game could get you the bad ending because of that. Even the main character, Fiona, recognizes Hewie being such a great companion frequently in the cutscenes. You even get a dog treatment rating at the end of the game! Please look into this awesome Capcom PS2 horror game. It's considered rare now, but if you ever get the chance to play it, please do. You'll really love it for the dog aspect and the game as a whole if you like survival horror. Also, Rule of Rose had a dog companion. Didn't know much about that game, though.

The Dragon Age Mabari was always in my party. Also, you can pet and talk to Cerberus in the game Hades, and it's the most satisfying thing of 2020.

Little late on this one, man, but 4:53 fits Minecraft.
I mean, sadly you can’t pet the dogs. And your interaction with them can be extremely limited. But like with much of that game you provide the context, and can make a meaningful relationship out of that. Look at that one youtuber (kurtjmac) who has been making videos for at least half a decade of him walking to the literal ends of the earth with a Minecraft dog. I really believe the relationship built there is stronger than the ones in just about every other game with dog companions.
Also, my daughter watches Stacyplays' Minecraft series named Dogcraft. Plus Minecraft has a lot of different animals you can have as pets. Ocelots (cats) and horses for sure. I don't think you can have my favorite tho (a zombie pig man).

He obviously never heard of Rule of Rose, the game is very centered around Jennifer's love for her dog. He uses his sniffer to help you find stuff and he distracts/attacks enemies as much as he can for you!!
EDIT: YES YOU CAN PET HIM you have to do this weird thing where you have to line up with him just right and press triangle a couple times I think and you can hug/pet him.

The 2 main characters are a girl and a dog. If I remember correctly, if the girl gets scared, you can hug the dog. The dog also plays a huge part in protecting the girl.

They can't make a game with a dog companion because everyone playing that game would know that the dog would die and that you were probably more emotionally invested in the dog than any other human companion you've ever had.
Coming back to this vid for nakey jakey to shout out the upcoming indie game Red Lantern, a game literally based on survival as you and your sled dogs lost in the Alaskan mountains and keeping them safe and fed is vital to your transportation
