    yo! i can't tell u how helpful these have been for me. i've watched and re-watched each one of your mixing videos, coming back to them each time it's time to mix a song to refresh and reinspire my work flow. THANK YOU for being such a clear explainer with great examples. I also love how much time you allow for your on/off comparisons, that's the most satisfying part! Cheers.

    That was very useful. I’d heard about distortion on bass being a good thing but it had never been explained to me previously that’s its vital to allow bass notes to sound out of poor quality speakers. I just changed one of my mixes and it’s made a massive difference immediately.

    Thanks Graham, I learned a lot from your videos and this one shows me I´m on the right way. For a constant lowend I love to mix in a duplicated track with a highcut around 250-300 hz and hard compressed (ratio 10/1, fast attack, medium to long release). To the distorted channel I often blend in an octave up, depending to the bassline and the song also 7 semitones up +/- some cents panned hard left and right. Adds something hard to disccribe and glues to the guitars. Best wishes from Germany and keep on your great work.

    one of my fave things to do with bass is double tracking and panning just slightly to either side. I tried reverb once and it was just to washy for my ideal bass sound. Also, if i want a grittier bass sound all the way through a song, keep the bass guitar pretty gritty and bright, but use a sub synth to give it the lower harmonic presence. It's hard or original, but i really enjoy using those techniques.

    Good teaching! I am new to Pro Tools, I am really enjoying it. I am a bass player, people naturally assume that it's a bass lets just heap loads of bottom end on it, not necessarily. I play fretless bass and I love those high notes to really sing out. 1K will surely do that! But I love experimenting, Pro Tools offers such an awesome range of tweeking for the tweeking geek like myself. I am really a singer/songwriter I play mostly acousic guitar and I am learning to play keys by ear. So I am loving experimenting using my Novation 61 midi keyboard. I am new to midi. But I am loving the endless sounds, and beats, it's just amazing! I am not frightened to try things. But this is great teaching. What I want to know is why my Waveform window looks so different to what I am seeing on my screen? Sure I can see my channels, but I can't see my plugins except on the mix window. I am not sure how to use a compresser yet so this is good for me.

    • @brandoncooke6564
      @brandoncooke6564 3 года назад

      Hey Tracy, what do you mean you can't see your plugins? Like you can't see the individual plugins' interface itself, or you can't see the list of which plugins you have on individual tracks, or what? And if you are just starting out, don't overwhelm yourself with information overload. Learn everything deliberately, and learn it at a pace in which you can actually comprehend it. My guess is you probably don't NEED to know the full ins-and-outs of compression just yet, even if you want to have a career in production/engineering. The super basic principal is, you're evening out your sound. Quieter sounds get a little louder, louder sounds get a little quieter. A faster attack time will generally add excitement and tighten the sound, while a slower attack will kind of give a more drawn out, punchier sound. Release times work pretty similar where a fast release gives you more aggression and grit, while slower releases really smooth out the sound. Those phrases in and of themselves can kind of be dissected as well, but that's a general guideline for you :-)

    Aloha, Graham. I start with a fantastic solid rosewood, ebony fingerboard 6 string fretless bass with custom wound Bartolini passive pickups - played through a Genz-Benz amp/SWR 15" speaker/horn picked up by a Townsend Sphere microphone (usually the fat U47 setting - depends on the rest of the track). Then I usually use a Parallel Bass Izotope Neutron compressor plug-in sometimes followed by Neutron EQ or Sculptor. But your video has given me some food for thought so I'm going to experiment with some of the techniques you've suggested. Thanks again.

    I like how you're warming up to reverb on instruments. I use a "studio" room on every single track, and it goes a huge way into creating three-dimensionality, roundness and depth, and smoothening the transients. Additionally, the variable predelay play is a great tool for layering instruments from front to back.
    I like the song, by the way. What's it called?

    • @thomaslewis8438
      @thomaslewis8438 4 года назад +1

      It's also a good way to preserve clarity. IMHO, if you are using dry samples, a room reverb is almost essential, since no sound in nature is dry. But I think if smoothing transients is the goal, there are better ways to do that. I also think it makes sense to time the pre-delay to an exact 1/128th note, so it is in sync rhythmically and not fighting the rhythm.

      @@thomaslewis8438 absolutely, you need to "detach them from the wall" which is how I hear it when they are no longer flat, like stuck to a wall, and you can actually hear that slight reverberation behind them that tells how much inside of a space they are, and how much depth there is behind them. that's what i i call "detach from the wall".
      there are several things you can do to smoothen transients, no doubt, and this, too, I find is one of them, it happens naturally. i think reverb acts kind of in the same way analog noise acts in hardware, in this regard, with some top end micro phase cancellation, but i don't know for sure.
      never thought of predelay rhythmically, like that, i don't know if you can feel that lag enough to perceive it rhythmically, but you can bring instruments closer or further. i'll keep that idea in mind, though, to try it once.

      there's a difference between getting a great tone on an amp and having a track be heard in a mix. He's not showing you how to tone your bass, he's showing you how to tweak the already shaped tone in a mix setting so it can still be heard between all the other tracks. Guitars, vocals, keyboards, drums, etc. all add volume to each range of EQ, so if you had a ton of tracks with a fair amount of mids, you are going to want to turn down the mids on certain tracks for them to pop. Just an example of a near infinite amount of variables. And each mix for different songs is going to be different. You can try to get your amp right all you want, but while it might be perfect for one recording it will be off on another, it's just more logical to tackle to small tweaks in production than before.

    • @rockwriter9054
      @rockwriter9054 4 года назад

      @@Blackenedwhiplash my point was the bass tone wasn't shaped, or equed,prior to recording, concideration at this point is the one song in question,not what it might sound like in other songs. Unless you are an artist who is known for a signiture bass sound. I am a respectful fan of Graham generally, (who should be responding to these points but very rarely does) but you can polish a bar of gold, but you can't polish a Turd, (as quoted by CLA) but even after "tweaking" it didnt sound well in the mix, (in my opinion) but i suppose thats what you get if you only allow 10 minutes,to mix your bass.

    First, not titling the vid correctly is a grave mistake. Do you even know what mixing is? You did not instruct us on mixing, You instructed us on eq, reverb, and layering distortion. Those happen well before mixing. The word 'mix' implies more than one instrument.
    Second, that bass player is terrible. Maybe they should take up the trombone instead. The irony is that you concentrated on very subtle changes to the track, yet ignored the fact that half the notes rattle. The rattles are the loudest sounds in the track. Not good. A good bass player never lets notes rattle like that. Makes my skin crawl, and would ruin a mix.

      You need to show your well agreed comments to Devin H he is the Authority on bass playing & recording, or at least he thinks he his, he guesses , and presumes i am ignorant ,after being on 15 Albums and working in Rockfield Studios for 4 1/2 years the sound was not inspiring going in ,so no matter what you did would not sound good, going out! especially in that mix.
      we all understand his subtle tweeks, he did, but it sounded poor going in and wasted sat in the mix, come on Devin ive had 6 PMS from people who know me who all agree you shouldnt guess or presume , Thomas lewis comments are just spot on correct , so let it go ! but to be fare to Graham, (who should have spent longer than 10 minutes) he is not a bass player, but generally a very good teacher, presenter and sound production engineer.

    • @thomaslewis8438
      @thomaslewis8438 4 года назад

      (Michael) Thinking you have license to instruct people on how they should reply is an even graver mistake. You don't. I didn't either, until you opened the door.
      (Rock) I thought so, but this vid throws all of that into question. A 'good' sound engineer is aware. This bass track clanks horribly and should be rerecorded, at a minimum. Anyone can make a mistake, including a great bass player and a sound engineer. Miles Davis says 'whether a note is good or bad depends upon what happens next'. In this case, realizing the issue and rerecording is what should happen next. What makes a good teacher, presenter, and sound engineer also includes due diligence.
