Mdou Moctar - The Agadez Folders: Live at Sultan’s Palace

- "In Mdou Moctar, it is not out of the ordinary for well-laid plans to collapse at the last-minute. For example, this happens a lot with flights being canceled. Maybe one of us doesn't get a visa to travel somewhere in time. Maybe all of us don't. Maybe someone at the embassy in Niger puts the visa sticker on page #1 - you know, that important page that has all your personal information like your name or birthday. As a result, we've all gotten good at reacting and maneuvering, and adapting an initial plan into something … even better!
When we got to Agadez winter of 2023, the first thing we did was drive around all together and scope out locations. We walked up a small building that overlooked the famous Agadez mosque and said ‘Alright, we're gonna film here as the sun comes up.' Another idea was to film under a well known bridge that connects the road from Agadez to Arlit - 'Let's set up a generator and play here! The kids will love it.' Those were two examples that didn't end up happening because it was either not allowed or we overslept. That's where the creative part comes in.
On our way to film at a location out in the bush, Mdou suddenly stops the car to talk to a guy walking a couple camels. They exchanged numbers. Unbeknownst to me, Mdou was plotting to get 50 camels to show up at the king of Agadez's palace where the famous Agadez mosque is.
This was an idea we had discussed, but much like some of our other concepts, I just kinda said 'cool' and assumed it would fall through.
On our last day together in Agadez, we showed up to the Sultan’s palace, set up, and then waited around for a few hours. Was the show gonna happen? Maybe a few hours later, 15-20 men riding camels showed up. I didn't count because I was so shocked Mdou was able to pull it off - calling this random guy we met in the desert with some camels, who then made some calls to get a bunch of Tuaregs (the youngest was probably 5 years old) to ride out from their village 3-5 hours away to be there for this special performance! Holy shit.
When we started playing, Tuaregs dressed in traditional Agadez clothing armed with hand drums started dancing and drumming. There were even a couple friends of ours who showed up with some swords and performed a traditional dance together as we played. This was all totally unplanned. Mdou, Ahmoudou, Souleymane and I are all wearing the signature Mdou Moctar colors - Tuareg purple mixed with white, which is the same color of the Mdou Moctar bird symbol." - Bassist, Producer, Mikey Coltun

The Tuareg posted up on the Camels is the hardest shit ever lmao
Seriously! What a way to roll up to a gig.
Africa will save rock and roll.
Totally!
From the very beginning, rock and roll was an urban movement closely connected with freedom: personal freedom, existential freedom, social freedom, sexual freedom, political freedom, freedom of dress, freedom of thought, speech and individual actions independent of the expectations of someone’s communities and authorities. Now, look at this crowd and tell me do you see any of these in them?
Maybe I'm stupid but I just can't see how exactly will Africa save rock and roll. Please, let me know.
@@andjelkozlotvorit’s a very cynical take. I am going to assume you know pretty much nothing about this particular culture beyond making certain logical assumptions (since it is in Africa after all). Certainly not its evolution over time. For all you know this is radical behavior, for them.
@@hashimrahman51 Of course my take is cynical. I don’t need to know much about their culture to see inorganic relation between r’n’r and them. Maybe this music won’t save r’n’r, but it will satisfy the desperate hunger for a new sound of us western consumers for a while.
@@andjelkozlotvormaybe as you say you're stupid. Doubt it. I have another diagnosis about you.
Golden Earring almost saved your rnr....
As a parody of your underground culture.
The dudes posted up on the camels, the dancers in their headdresses, the intimate crowd, the setting and of course the incredible songs make this one of the best live videos I’ve seen. What a band!
Your drummer is SO GOOD. His high hat game is outstanding
He is very good.
I love that guy too. And great charisma!
Tasteful drumming. Not exact comparison, IMHO like grand funk, early airplane.
Also check out early drummer of Big Daddy and the Hoodoo Men, a local band .

Anna has always been my favorite mdou song.
One of the most original bands currently, hope that they can inspire more bands in Niger and all of Africa
left-handed guitarists man. this is amazing. all of these musicians, the videographers, the performers, everyone involved here are just top notch.
this is one of the best concerts I have ever seen streamed on youtube - love the dancers with the elaborate headdresses
Always a joy to watch a Mdou Moctar live video! Locale, dancers and the camels have made this one of the best. Shout out to the drummer Souleymane - he is insanely good.
It’s weird how the best guitarists are left handed. Mdou is definitely one of the best.
Greetings from Alaska!
Your music & video brings warmth & joy to the cold days & long dark nights.
Peace & long life to you & yours
The headdress of the spear men look amazing! Crazy crazy concert. Wish I was there.
Dude nailed it! His guitar is an extension of his soul. I want to be there!!!!😍💯🎉💥
other bands have people knocking each other over in the pit, but mdou has freaking sword fights! All jokes aside, incredible band with incredible music doing another incredible performance!!! Was very lucky to see them live earlier this year and the energy was incredible. I wish I'd have been able to read more lyric translations before then, as it would've made that show even more impactful than it already was. Blown away as always by these insanely impactful grooves!
Je serais présent sur votre concert à Paris demain soir, n'oubliez pas de ramener les chameaux aussi!
so grateful that you share your culture with us
Greatings from Ukraine to the free Touareg people of Sahel!
An Argentinian from Colombia here!
I've got my ticket to see them here in Los Angeles, 10/26/24. Very excited.
Gonna see them on th 18th in Oct! Can't wait!
Aí @ozcriasoficial No minuto 23 rola uns passinhos de respeito eim!!! A cultura Tuareg é foda demais!! Beleza pura!
Yes! I love Mdou Moctar! Great production once again! Keep up the great work!
I'm liking Mr. Ahmoudou Epiphone Rhythm. Wish I could hear him better in the mix. Great!
The music is absolutely amazing, production is insanely good, the vibe is off the charts and in no universe does this not get 5 stars from me.
Good Evening: Stunning. Probably just my imagination, but some of the camels seemed to sway their heads in time with the beat.
I love how every time they play one of their songs it's a bit different while completely recognizable.
You should check out The Brother Moves On from Joburg South Africa
Amazing guys! Come to Brazil!
Os caras fazendo o passinho, véi! Viva África!
Gracias Mdou Moctar por mostrarnos la música desde otro punto de vista con una mezcla de melodías
incredible band
Best band out there these days, I love it!
I hope the kids watching also get inspired to pick up the guitar and never put in a situation where they have to pick up a gun
What's the difference?
@@Heimelhead the guitar will help them pick up chicks😎🤘
That classic north american rac1st comment implying that every middle east/african person is a potential terrorist who needs to be saved from their own retrograde uncivilized culture
Why would you assume that these kids could eventually end up in a situation like that?
@@chocobo678 The country currently has separatism issues, and a branch of ISIS hanging about in the desert, and is currently in the midst of a civil war. Fun fact, the rebel groups as well as Al-Qaeda branch operating in the area are supported financially by France and Ukraine.
I love this music very much, it makes me happy and thouhgtful.
Damn, what a rhythm section!!
The drummer is machine ! So good !
Gorgeous sounds, particularly love the guitar ❤
i love this so much!!! thank you for allowing us to watch! i would be excited to meet the people in your country as you have met ours. #onelove
Tokoba is the smoothest groove that I've heard in a long minute! I can't stop dancing.
И подтанцовка то-же хороша 🫠

while politics and religion divides humankind , art has the power to reunite it , thank you Mdou Moctar for remembering us that we can actually be one!
The story in the description is so good
Fabulous ... thx to everyone, love & care for all 🕊
Fantastic sound, would love a vinyl pressing of this show!

Mdou Moctar ❤
Good show, I liked the dancers ✌😎
10,000 thumbs ups!
いつか日本に来てくれたとしても同じようなステージは観れないだろうから現地に行って観たい!
Incrível! Muito amor do Brasil
Спасибо! Вы пишите и исполняете очень хорошую музыку.
Woooooow 🔊⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️🧠
Really wish to hear them live sounds as good as studio! The overall arrangement of sound is top notch! God bless Afrika! Love and peace from India.
Agadez - WOW!!!!!!!!!
iiiiiiiiiiinsaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaane authenticity
41:40 he spots the people getting down to that song and walks over to show appreciation
Moctar is back 👏🏼
🌹🌹🌹Grazas polo video. Emocionante!
you rock , guys !
incredible!
Just like here only a few feel the energy. I thought it was just a U.S,A. thing. What's wrong with people? Get up and enjoy the music. Dance people. Energy like this is positive and can raise you to new heights. I would be jammin with this band and vibing. Dance and enjoy the energy. Get off your phones and ignore the thought police. Only the preachers can enjoy it. Do better preachers you will get a better following. Our human race is amazing how music can influence us to just enjoy the moment. What is a shame is the jack boot soldiers on the circle to prevent those who really want to take part can't unless you have permission to do so. I'm glad that you dudes are out there doing this. Music is integral part of our ancestors and now as well.
Mdou’s index finger is the pick of destiny
