- GWR 5043 The Earl of Mount Edgcumbe would make her long anticipated return to the West Coast mainline over the 1 in 75 climb to Shap Summit with this being the 1st time since she last ran over the line back in 2015 . The tour would start at Birmingham New St and head to Carlisle with 5043 joining the tour at Carnforth after arriving there the day before . We first see 5043 on the last half mile towards Shap summit and the Summit with the return leg just South of Penrith station. Thanks to Nige for the great company.
I was on-board the tour with 5043 and she put on one hell of a good show going up Shap, compared to the gradients they have on the Western region the castle just walked up Shap like it didn't exist and we didn't have a shoebox on wheels at the back unlike those who we're on the WCME with Tangmere. From footage I saw from people who we're onboard the tour hauled by 34067 there we're a number of people who we're so jealous that we we're going up Shap with no diesel on the back. They claim that the days of steam running solo is over forever, 5043 was like hold my drink 7029 i'm going up Shap alone.
From on-board I timed the tour from the M6 overbridge just after the yard at Tebay, from there to the Shap Summit sign we managed the climb in 6 minutes 53.69 seconds.
Had the 47 on the back not been giving 34067 a shove from the rear that would've been dragging the weight of 14 going up Shap (a dead diesel is roughly the weight of 3 coaches).
Spot on Steve, a cracking run from the Castle and nice to see something different for a change, cheers 👍
Thanks Nige , certainly knew she was on the way and like you say something different.
Great shots of the Jubil.... sorry Castle heading up Shap! 9 on isnt bad - but two were empty. Sorry being cynical about GW locos. You definitely were braving the elements for the Penrith shots. Fantastic stuff
Thanks Leslie, certainly great to see something different. Thankfully the rain didn’t last too long ☔️😂
Superb video Steve, great to see "The Earl" heading for Carlisle again. Cheers, Jeff.
Glad you enjoyed it Jeff , seems ages since I last saw 5043 on Shap so it was a welcome change 👍
Steve, It was good to finally meet up with you yesterday and thanks for helping me out with the tripod straps. It was go to see the shots that I missed of the Castle attacking the summit.. Regards, John
Thanks John , yes it was great to finally put a face to a name 👍
Oh! What a chuff! That thing's relentless! Just l;ove the GWR stuff. A bit special imo.
That's another Genius video Stephen well done keep it up bye for now Philip
Great video of the Castle at full cry, thanks for sharing.
Amazing performance without a banker!! Thank you
Glad you like it Karl , yes it was great to see her unassisted 👍🎥
Nice video. This came up as a RUclips suggest. Im here in Sydney. I was lucky to be able to have the chance to ride The Flying Scotsman when iy came to Australia in i think 1988. I cant remember where we boarded it tho it went to Maitland, Newcastle... Some 150km north of Sydney and returned back.... Im actually wondering if our overhead electric inter urban fleet that services Sydney is able to run under the wires over there 🤔. Standard guage we have same as over there... Also whilst im random rambling, i dont think we can let rip trains here like you can in Britain. I think 115kmh is limits in Australia.
Thanks for the very detailed comment and I’m glad it brought back memories for you. Regards Steve
Brilliant footage was great to travel behind her
Thanks for the kind comment and I hope you enjoyed your day out 👍Steve
I went on the tour too.
Excellent clips Steve , as another contributor said the Castle being worked just nicely Northbound Shap . At least you ,ve got one unassisted steam tour so far this year . Heavy shovage on the 34067 trip ,but thats fairly normal with that loco is,nt it .
Thanks Edmund, certainly great to see something different especially running unassisted 👍
only half a load though!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A fine unassisted performance from 5043. great angles at Shap and not seen many shots around Penrith.👍
Thanks David , decided to get away from the crowds that would be around Strickland and Shap so Penrith was good.
Excellent video Steve. Nice to see the Earl up north, a change of loco. Kind regards C&A
Glad you enjoyed it C&A, it was a welcome change from the normal locos we get 👍
Great footage of the copper top on, Shap. 5043 putting in a great effort with 9 on the hook. Great stuff, well done 🤓
Glad you enjoyed it Anthony, certainly knew she was on the way . Regards Steve
Nice set of shots there Steve! Cheers 🍻
Excellent footage of the 5043 Steve. Great sound climbing Shap. 2 Great locations at Penrith aswell 👍
Glad you enjoyed it Simon , we did the Penrith shots to try and avoid the crowds which worked well 👍
Very impressive!
Great video
Great video
Great video Steve, the Castle was definitely the star of the day.
Totally agree Alistair, certainly knew she was on her way 😂
I'm sure they've fitted traction motors under that water carrier😂 gw locos don't usually go like that😮
Thanks Peter , you could be right 😂
If it had 12 on, it wouldn't!
Brilliant coverage of the Castle Steve a welcome change of loco, thanks for sharing. Brian
Glad you enjoyed it Brian, plenty of folks about so we tried to avoid the crowds 👍
Lovely. The year in the title is '23, but I assume it's '24?
Thanks Ian , hadn’t noticed that to be honest.

Thanks Austin, brought out the idiots but like you say it was a great show 🎥👍
I was on-board the tour hauled by 5043.
Nice video Steve :)
Thanks Simon 👍
Just shows what these old engines can still do when given a 'sensible' load. 🙂 p.s. What does 'Reg' weigh when full?
Totally agree Chris, not sure what the reg would be to be honest 🤔
@@TheStephengthompson I guestimate 43 tonnes. 30t for the GUV; 11t for 3000 gallons of water and add a few tons for the tanks. So train weight about 320 plus about 15 tons of people. Go on ... shout "NERD!!" 🙂
@@chrisredding6673Wouldn’t dream of it . Thanks for the very detailed explanation 👍👍
@@TheStephengthompson 1403 Horsepower at the rail. More than a Class 37 and nearly a 40. Supernerd! 🙂
