Well done Steve did not expect that loco and sadly could not get out to see or film it so thanks to you and Nige I could enjoy your content ,cheers Brian
Great captures of a great performance Steve, brilliant to see them letting the 5 do the lion’s share. Great sound throughout. The exhaust sounded much more even than it did in the famous shot you captured several years ago..!
Thanks David , you could certainly hear the five coming as at the summit I heard her all the way from Tebay 👍A lot better than the day all those years back 😂
It was a stunning performance by the Black 5 yesterday and this video really captures how hard it had to work to climb Shap even with the diesel assisting on the rear. I was a bit further south at Salterwath where there was only 2 people, myself and Stephen Brass. I was expecting it to be really busy.
Steve, A fantastic sound and although there was some diesel assistance the Black Five was being challenged so a good balance here. Incidentally what's that object at 3:33 above the smokebox door in front of the chimney ? It looks like a microphone blimp. Regards, John
Thanks John , we expected assistance but like you say the five was doing its share . It is a blimp on a zoom pole that’s being used for a model rail company for the sound .
Fine stuff - never seen a boom mike on a loco before! Was there one on the 47 too?! It's quite easy to level clips these days but the second one isn't very bad.
Thanks Ian , the boom pole and mic were just on the five recording sounds for a model company. I normally level the shots up in my editing suite but was having trouble getting it right 😂
Excellent footage. 12 coaches on Shap for a 5MT is asking too much - but the diesel didn't seem to be giving all that much assistance. Top marks to the footplate crew for a fine performance.
Brilliant video well done Stephen very good camera work as usual as well also will you and nige get out to see British India line and Scots guardsman or just Scots guardsman or just British India line please reply quickly bye for now Philip
Thanks Philip , not sure what the plan regarding 46115 and 35018 today as I’d heard 35018 would come back engine and coach slow and possibly 46115 with the ECS but I suspect the 47 will be leading.
Honestly, if you call that "being pushed" 😑 You do know what the maximum load for a Class 5 unassisted over Shap would be? A clue: it'd be a lot less than what you see here
At 2:40 you can hear the Brush on about Notch 3 or 4; so carrying its own weight plus maybe three coaches. (i.e. good railwaymanship). But I still think a 2-6-4T at the back would be better. 🙂 I live just south of Workington station, and later heard the "five" go through on full "woof", with nothing heard from the 47 at all.
Spot on Steve, good to see a five working over Shap again and what a cracking sound she was making, cheers 👍
Thanks Nige , the sound certainly made up for the lack of exhaust 👍
Nice, Stephen. Revives pleasant memories of rail fanning at Shap.
Thanks for the kind comment and I’m glad it brought back memories for you 👍
Well done Steve did not expect that loco and sadly could not get out to see or film it so thanks to you and Nige I could enjoy your content ,cheers Brian
Cheers Brian , was hoping for Britannia but the five was a great choice 👍🎥
Great sounds from 45231 on Shap bank Steve, great video, cheers Steve . 👍🎥
Thanks Steve, plenty of effort from the five with just a bit of help from the rear .
3 good shots here Steve, with superb sound (as always!).
Thanks Julian, the sound certainly travelled as I could hear the approach for ages .
Black 5 and Brush. Two historic machines playing together.
Thanks Brian, plenty of years added together I’d say 👍
Spectacular sight and sound show Steve. Black 5 putting in an excellent performance. Well done 🤓
Thanks Anthony, certainly knew the five was on its way 👍
Superb video Steve, great to see the Black 5 in great form. Cheers, Jeff.
Cheers Jeff , it was a cracking display from the five even with a little assistance from the rear.

Thanks Alistair, it was strange that not many folk we’re around 🤔
Hi Steve , Great video.....Dave 🚂🚃😃👍👍👍👍
Thanks Dave , appreciated as always 👍
@@TheStephengthompson Cheers Steve , Thanks for reply., Great videoing....Dave 🚂🚂🚂🚂😀👍👍👍👍
Superb video Stephen and excellent audio of the black five working hard up the incline.
Thanks Allan , it was a fantastic sound coming from the five that was audible for ages 👍

Great video as always Stephen, 45231 sounds fantastic. Cheers, Jake.
Cheers Jake , much appreciated comment as always 👍
Good video
A good sight and sound from the Forester. First time I've seen microphones attached to a loco!.👍
Thanks David, certainly a first for me an all 🤔😂
Excellent shot. Like !
Thanks for the kind comment as it’s much appreciated.
Working well there Steve, making a great sound with seemingly little help. Those flies must have been horrible!
Thanks Austin, plenty of warning it was getting near me 😂The flies were oddly not a pest but they seemed to like getting in the frame ☹️
Fantastic indeed!!
Plenty of exhaust I'd say, just that the locos being well fired, with I guess reasonable coal, therefore no great plumes of black unburnt smoke.😂
Thanks Mike , appreciate the comment 👍
Great footage.
Cheers Denis , pleased you enjoyed the video 👍

Nice video Steve :)
Cheers Simon 👍
More smoke belching out the diesel pusher than the steam loco!
Very true Andrew, the five was certainly doing 90% of the work or more as if you listen the 47 certainly wasn’t on full bore push 🤔
Nice them Steve not a lot of exhaust but a brilliant hot day Nice one mate 😊
Thanks Graham, the sound certainly made up for the lack of exhaust 👍

I was on it, after Grayrigg stop for water, the 47 got us up to 61mph before shutting down and leaving then it up to the Black 5
Thanks Rod , the five was certainly giving its all as it was making a wonderful sound.
@@neildimmer9521Thanks Neil , certainly a great show from 45231 👍
Ah. The power of steam.
12 plus the diesel would be equal to 15. So probably overloaded for the 5. I can't see network rail allowing it to run without the backup.
Thanks Richard, that’s a pretty good point about the loading 👍
Nice Footage there Steve off the Black Five working hard. Shame about the 47 working at the back
A class 5 on 12 coaches? It would be inevitable
Thanks for the very kind words as they are much appreciated as always.
Sobering to thing that the '47 is now at least 55 years old....
Thanks Chris , very true and I bet 45231 is a few years old an all 🤔

46115 & 35018 I believe
Five standing in for a bigger loco? Assistance in rear is hardly surprising in those circumstances.
Thanks Andrei, very true and thankfully the five was allowed to do the lions share of the work.
If it wasn’t for the Duff she would have taken twelve (hours) over shap! 😆
Bit harsh Matty as back in 2011 black five 45305 took 12 over Shap without any problems 👍
A lot of work for a class5!!
Thanks Stephen, certainly was and it did well I thought 👍
Always a “grumbling Gertie “ on the back!
Thanks Andy , sadly Saphos have the diesel on the rear at the moment .
A Black Five they dont get better than that.
Looks like 12. Some weight.
Great video but, should be titled pushed over shap. There's more smoke coming out of the paraffin burner
Thanks Christopher, agree a bit but the five was certainly giving its best with the 47 hardly in full throttle mode 🤔
