A Beginner’s Guide to CrossFit
Understanding CrossFit

CrossFit is similar to religion. You can still believe in your god, even if you don’t go to place of worship. You can still believe and practice CrossFit even
If you don’t attend an affiliate.
Thissss
True. Because affiliate owners have acted like pastors to make money. Period. They are not good in business so they use cult tactics
@@DevHazyas an Affiliate owner, I agree that most of us are not skilled businessmen, but to say that we use “cult tactics” is completely off the mark and slanderous.
this is blatantly false... @@DevHazy
CrossFit as a cult is the real problem. Glad things are slowly improving and moving away from that
I was a coach for about 7 years. For a while I was in Philly coaching a bunch of Wharton Business School guys and I would never here the end of business this and business that and how the gyms were leaving money on the table, blah blah blah.
I remember Greg saying in an interview that he wanted his gym to be hard to find because he wanted to know that you really wanted to be there. That resonated deeply with me.
I drop in affiliates once a month or so but I'm definitely a CrossFitter that works out in my garage gym. Thanks Greg for what you started, best health prescription there is!
In summary…. CrossFit of old was primarily about ‘forging elite fitness’, making lives better and just doing things for the love of it. Making money off the back of that was very much secondary and came as a result of doing the primary thing well.
New CrossFit is primarily a business first and foremost and interested only in where the next buck can be rinsed from. Now, the love of the sport and the desire to make people’s lives better is very much secondary at best.
CrossFit won’t grow the way they hope it will when its interest in making money and rinsing the community of every dollar they can is so very very far ahead of its interest in WHY we all do this and WHY it’s so important.
Street Parking was all I kept thinking nailed Greg's vision..
Give a man a fish, he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, he’ll eat for life.
In general, CF Affiliates don’t need more leads, they need to better handle the leads they already have (lead capture, response time, lead flow, sales, onboarding, and retention).
I have a good sense of when the "oh well" is coming, but it still has me 😂😂😂
Greg got on his bike and peddled to the stationary store… it had a cool gold star. So good!
I was apart of an affiliate for 3 years. In that 3 years the people in the community helped me get toes to bar, and butterfly pull up. The coaches at this gym were great. But they didn’t teach me these skills, the community taught me these skills. The coaches helped me perfect them. I ended up leaving my gym because the price went up to $60 a week, which is $260 a month. The gym has everything you need, and they now offer yoga with your membership.. The weekly fee just got to me. So I’ve been doing CrossFit in my garage for 2 months now. It’s not quite the same. Because I’m not around people. But it’s CrossFit, and I’m still doing it without the hefty price tag. 🤷🏼♀️
Get your L1 and invite friends over to workout. Make your own fun.
Lmao... Be your own hero
Spot on. I’ve been an affiliate owner since 2014, L3… yadda yadda. I’m a huge fan of CrossFit and you, Andrew. Weird that it seems we have to pick sides.
I see that you want what’s best for CrossFit as a whole. I think the new HQ is getting pressure from affiliates to do something (to make the affiliate fee worth it). The obvious issue is they’ve done a ton of outside hires and the heart and soul of CrossFit feels sold-out.
As an owner, I’ve been able to spread CrossFit to way more ppl than if I stayed in a garage. I can say my gym has changed 1000+ lives.
It’s also been a struggle and a labor of love.
Is there a way to help the affiliates successful and “get leads” and still be true to the roots that got me and so many of the real OGs diehard CrossFitters for life. As of now it feels like CrossFit is a few dilutions away from being a f45 or orange theory - just another drop in on someone’s class pass flakey workout routine.
The most sold out thing HQ did was start the affiliate partner network (APN).
This is so good. Well done per usual Hiller. Connecting to the original works and intention gives off serious ‘08/‘09 nostalgia.
CrossFit is forging elite fitness. That sounds so cool and made me want to start CF back in 2017. I love knowing that I am fitter than well over 90% of the population
One of your best videos, keep it up big guy 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Great video, love the journal references.
Fitness *braveheart scream* Freedom!
I started out of my garage 2009 no idea what I was doing completely main site based and have had the best time on my own and in affiliates still work out of my garage daily love the things that were created and it would be really nice and we can go back but changes inevitableexcellent video as usual Andrew thank you
Camaderie is "suffering coupled with laughter." Working out with people will give you the best expression of CrossFit, but remember, you will COME for the fitness, then STAY for the community.
Creepy
*Camaraderie
Sorry, I had to
@@DevHazy I have no idea what would be creepy about that post.
@@spencergsmith duly noted and edited. Thank you!
@@jethrocardona9063 cult stuff. Making members think they have to constantly buy things and be involved or else they won’t be good enough for the gym … making them feel they have to cut standards to get higher scores to impress their lame friends. Making them feel other sports are inferior. Making them feel olympic lifting isn’t a sport because it’s not a race. The whole cult aspect is dangerous
Do you get the feeling that today’s CF HQ is primarily focused about the Games? I wonder what would happen if the Games only happened once every four years like the Olympics.
Without the Games, what else would be the best marketing for CrossFit?
Hey. Been doing CrossFit for 11 years now. I know change is inevitable. But all the interviews I’ve watched over the years with Greg. One thing I can conclude is that the excitement to make people fitter was more important then the money.
You have a GIANT blind spot. CF grew so fast because the financial crisis made rent at industrial spaces dirt cheap. Glassman, Roza, fitness definitions, none of that matters. The "size" of CF will always be determined by the cost of rent.
This. Is interesting.
@@hillerfit federa reserve has data. Look at "Producer Price Index by Commodity: Real Estate Services (Partial): Industrial Buildings, Gross Rents"
@@hillerfit this is by far the most important factor in the growth of CF. Greg, Roza, Don....irrelevant. CF growth is an accident of the real estate market.
I know where the owners are going. There's a reason they put all that affiliate cost info on the site. One of these days I'll email ya.
Our affiliate closed for financial reasons. I bought equipment from them and wife and I have been doing CrossFit at home since.
10 years affiliate owner here! Your leads come from your current members! Do your job and other will show up 🔥
Fitness has been defined in a measurable way decades before Glassman.
when? where?
@@brianhaida3103I could list many textbooks and scientific articles. In English check Merton 1959 or Astrand who measured "work capacity' since the 60s. But anybody who has done physical education in school has done things like a Cooper Test, vertical jump test, or AMRAP of push ups/sit ups in 1 minute. These are all measures of well defined fitness components like general endurance, muscle power, muscle strength and endurance.
@@brianhaida3103 I could cite many textbooks and articles. In English try Adamson 1959 in the journal Ergonomics
I hate to defend DeCoons again, but if his experience is like mine, I can see where he's coming from. My first exposure to CF was in an affiliate that I joined, and I can't imaging trying to work out like this on my own. I have worked out similar to this on my own, but having the community around me makes all the difference in the world. Unlike Dacoons, however, I don't have a vested interest in devaluing the garage gym.
Yes Sir.
It’s a lot like writing a business plan without having a business plan.
I've been doing cf workouts for over 13 years.. Was at an affiliate for about 3 years.. New owners took over, i left.. I'll never go back to an affiliate. I only pay $35 month go to a local gym, pay $15 month for Linchpin programming. Plus have my own stuff at home now. I'm not paying $150 a month to say I'm going to a official cf affiliate
I loved the old Glassman CrossFit . Now it sucks. I started in 2010 and quit in 2016
Imagine if they had the slightest hint that crossfit could be delivered and performed with successful outcomes outside of an affiliate space, their private equity backers would have a spasm. Rather than deciphering the mindless drivel of Don et al, it would be more revealing of the direction of Vrossfit's direction to know exactly what return on their investment the PE interests have for the company and over what time period.
LFG!!! This shit is invigorating! I knew I landed in the right place when I did (alpha dog). I've been at it ever since, with no intentions of stopping. Keep crushing homie!
Great job Hiller.
Did you see Sevans rant on roasting other sports, like hyrox, tough mudder spartan race, powerlifting Olympic weightlifting? 😂😂😂😂
By far my favorite video! Thanks Hiller
Like, ever? Out of all videos ever??
I’m not as tuned in to HQ as you are, but it seems that HQ doesn’t have a problem with garage gyms, just with gyms that de-affiliate.
The amount CrossFit was bought from Greg is the highest it will ever be worth. These investors trying to get good on their investment should just realize that they spent too much on it in the first place and accept the short term loss and just accept it needs be held for the long term.
This was a really helpful video. I moved and had to leave a great affiliate. I've been torn between just doing CrossFit at my globo gym by myself, or joining a non-affiliate that does "functional fitness." They eliminate some elements like snatching so I dislike that, but I like doing it with community. What are people's thoughts on what is more "CrossFit"? I do like that I can do a bit more progressive overload in lifting at my gym than I got at my old affiliate.
the website comparison is really damming
Awesome video Andrew! Does Crossfit Chief Nation have a link for their merchandise? I am in the west coast in Colorado but would love to purchase a sweater to support!!! Loved the video you did with them.
Does he have a bulldog floor scrubber in his gym? Seems a little overkill 😂
Bought it from the affiliate when it closed lol
New camera? Video is crispy.
10x common business cliché, think Grant Cardone
The look on Jason’s face when he said that, you could just read his mind. Probably a valid goal 10-15 years ago, but not in 2024.
When people say old vs new HQ, it isn’t referencing the mentality from the early 2000’s. That’s so far gone and lost in history.
It’s referencing the same California Dream’in mentality that hasn’t changed since 2012 that CrossFit could be this center of the world entity.
The average paying CrossFit member today has or never will touch articles from twenty years ago.
CF without a total priority restructuring and massive partnership will never reach 20m or 30m that is absurd.
You would need partnership with the US Government and Congress and make it mandatory in all schools PE programs to get that kind of traction and growth it will never happen in its current state. Would that be awesome? Hell yes. But not likely.
HQ is full of interesting people with personal agendas that don’t mesh well and conflict with any real progress, constantly wrestling between growing a business and restructuring after a few years of figuring out who to let go next.
Speaking of the articles, they are a goldmine of timeless stuff. Bill Grundler and Chase Ingram did a series reading through the old articles and some of the stuff is still somewhat relevant today.
“The leads are for closers..”
Crossfit is great!! Just dont drink the kool-aid. What I have noticed is that the price continues to rise and the standards continue to fall. Glassman needs to start another venture. Better and cheaper
Bro is an OG crossfitter
It's a little unfair to blame Jay. He is reading from the new playbook, which is about business growth, not elite fitness. And as you pointed out, it's not like he even has actual facts to work with. The "North Star" is super blurry. Now he is one of the public faces, charged with explaining the unexplainable. Tough gig.
In the shadows …..CrossFitting my life away-200 sq ft. garage
wonder if the movements that are to be understood include deadlift? 🤪
Ahhh and all good things come to an End.
All of this from one guy sending out a tweet
Good tone on this one, could be better though.
Is the journal still a thing? I haven’t personally looked at it in probably over a decade. Is there still a message board?
I started learning about CrossFit after watching the games. I joined a CrossFit gym and was really disappointed. No on ramp classes available. So they gave me a trainer, who did not even have his L1. I used to be really fit 30 years ago working out at Golds gym using free weights so I at least had a basic understanding of using weights but I had no idea how to do things like cleans, thrusters etc. I could not figure out how to do those moves correctly when working with the trainer and it was so frustrating. I could tell the trainer was annoyed with my inability to catch on quickly. When you are 50 and overweight it is essential to have the correct form when doing these type of movements and that didn’t seem to be important to him. I felt like a failure and quit. Through the Dave Castro podcast I found CrossFit on-ramp classes on line. Finally, I learned how to do the movements. It wasn’t me that was the problem it was the trainer who didn’t have the qualifications to do on ramp training.
So I ended up joining CrossFit Mayhem on line and I love it but would really like to join a gym.
Serious question (not trying to be a douche)….how do you balance the garage concept with trying to run the business of CrossFit?
You let Street Parking carve it out with a dull knife…oh wait. 19 dollars per month
Hot Chow!
Our pets heads are falling off 😂😂😂
Oh well
Hiller, I’m stuck at 455 deadlifts can I make it to 600?
First!
This is a bad take. Sorry Hiller, looking at Journal posts from the early 2000's doesn't equate to what crossfit became. When those journals came out, there were 50ish crossfit gyms? What was Glassman supposed to say...go find an affiliate? At that time, Glassman probably didn't even recognize the importance of working out with friends. He just wanted to get his mythology out to the public. I'm sure his opinion changed when they had over 10,000 affiliates. By then he new the importance of the affiliate. At the end of his tenure, how many lectures did he have a the importance of the affiliates pushing out health to the population? This video missed the mark.
I love leads
Nickel and dime the affiliates? 4:25
Awww men
Let's be real Greg didnt invent CrossFit he just put a timer on fitness and called it CrossFit #TheBiggestHeist
