@@mavfan1 It's not really about art, it's about whinging people who try and deter people from using a tool for arbitrary reasons, which has always existed. There's not really an objective 'right way' to do something like photography because of the amount of variables.
Remember, this is a gear review channel, meaning at least some people are using this to help them decide whether to buy this camera. I'm all for experimentation, but if you're reviewing a product, you should at least cover the scenarios in which most people would use a camera like that...and then you can experiment. Of course, why not ? The remark comes by the fact that street photography is supposed to be done quickly, often in a hurry not to miss the "decisive moment", and it's more difficult with a heavy camera and with a huge 100+megapixels sensor, that does not stand the slightest shaking. So, there is an objective basis to this point, "why would you use a MF camera for street ?". But of course, as this one is not so heavy and is stabilized, why not using it for street ? Furthermore, before digital, photography history is full of photo journalist using medium or even large chambers.
I'd say that the biggest struggle i have with my a6300/a7III is not getting out enough. I optimized for the experience I wanted with the way I spent the money, but I don't use it enough any more to justify the money. In other words, I made a mistake that has so far ended up costing me ~ 4-5 grand (with lenses) because at the time I thought it was worth it. If you get out and shoot, whatever gets you out and shooting is good enough, the gear itself doesn't matter. Keep the passion. And gear does matter, but having the a6000 puts you ahead of the gear curve by a LOT TBH. Its a great camera I still recommend to my friends, and they've all loved theirs.

I hate to be "that guy" because I get just as excited about new gear and insane tech specs as everyone else, but a very sobering reality just came over me as I was watching the studio portion (around the 11:10 mark); It's all the same, these days... Basically, any professional camera since 2012 can "get the job done" no matter what that job is. I know I just sound like a barrel of cliches and buzz words, right now, but really. There are so many photographers that use 100 year old film cameras and produce beautiful work. There are so many photographers that still shoot film, only. There are so many professional photographers that still use their D700's or 5d Mark ii's. There are professionals who have actually built entire careers with a smartphone. Obviously, there will be very clear disadvantages and quality differences in the extreme examples (like comparing a professional camera to a phone). But, I honestly believe that any professional camera from 2012 and on (and a few select cameras from pre-2012) in the hands of any competent photographer will produce results that are indistinguishable from the results we see coming out of the latest and greatest stuff. I mean, we have been doing these same "studio environment, portrait of a woman, zoom in to the eyes and marvel at the incredible detail and perfection of the results" thing for over a decade, now. We are so far beyond the point of any of this actually making a difference 99% of the time. It also makes me realize just how much trouble camera manufacturers are really in. I mean, it is getting increasingly difficult for them to produce any camera that is worth upgrading to. I think their entire business model is shifting towards non-professionals with G.A.S. out of shear necessity.
@Art Amazing print quality has been seen for decades, though. A billboard is very low res and low quality, but looks good because we are far away from it. A standard photo we might hang on the wall will also look good, no matter how close we get to it, because its size isn't being pushed to an extreme. You would need to have an especially enormous print and your nose pressed to the photo to start seeing a difference in print quality, in the vast majority of cases.
Studio usually means F5.6 or F8 for highest resolution. This camera + lens can do it wide open as seen in this video, which has been around for a much shorter time, and certainly hasn't been available with that sharpness at 100 mp.
@Art Firstly, I was very tempted to not read your comment, at all, since you started off by saying "You don't have to tell me that". As for the rest of it, since it is clear from several of your comments that you prefer to read as little as possible, I will just say; "Gallery quality" prints have existed for nearly as long as cameras have. It's not as if we have been unable to print anything worthy of a gallery up until this point, but now this new camera has solved that problem for us.

Hi Chris and Jordan, great work as always guys. Just one thing I would like to comment on is at 4:45, what you are doing is not ETTR, but instead protecting highlights... so that is more like ETTL (expose to the left of the histogram). I have been shooting digital for more than 20 years, and in the early days we had to boost the exposure so shadow detail was not completely lost with those early sensors. The log representation of digitized light values (especially with those early sensors) meant that there was less information in the darker range of the image, and we needed to overexpose the shot so there would be more useful detail in the shadows. Newer sensors are much better at recovering this detail without excessive noise or lost information. Hope this makes sense. Wikipedia also has a good article on this and simply states... "ETTR images requiring increased exposure may appear to be overexposed (too bright) when taken and must be correctly processed (normalized) to produce a photograph as envisaged." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exposing_to_the_right Thanks, D.

Fujifilm is smart enough and decided not to compete with Sony in the full frame market. So Fujifilm preferred the medium format market and made medium format cameras and medium format lenses relatively more affordable to professional and amateur enthusiasts. That is great. Until 2012 with the introduction of Canon 6D and Nikon 600 full frame cameras were expensive for amateurs. Usually around 3000€. Nowadays the full frame Sony α7 can be bought new for 700€. In ten years the price of medium format cameras will be dropped more. For example the second model of Hasselblad X1D is has a significantly lower price than the first one.
Dungeon Master You are right. The digital medium format Pentax 645D and Pentax 645Z had great prices in comparison to Hasselblad and Phase One digital medium format cameras. But that wasn't enough. Both digital Pentax 645 were very bulky and heavy. Very similar to the Pentax 645 film cameras. The mirrorless revolution has opened the way to smaller camera bodies. For example the new smallest full frame Sigma fp mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses doesn't even have a mechanical shutter. The medium format Hasselblad X1D doesn't either have a mechanical shutter but its lenses have leaf shutter. In the near future even the mechanical shutter will be a thing of the past.

even though its not for me, it definitely looks like an impressive camera. a huge step forward in making medium format versatile in more situations. congrats to fuji. also thanks to dpreview team for another excellent video. love the guest photographer and model. love it even more cause rene has minimal experience with fuji's mirrorless cameras.
Loved both videos. Don't understand how you can use the wrong camera to take amazing photos. It's like cars, they can all do basically the same thing, some are better in some situations, but who cares if it works.
I gave this camera a lot of thought and after watching your review several times, and also Matt Granger's review. My decision is that i don't need 100MP and although i DO want a camera with a higher resolution than the 1Dx Mark III which I'm more used to shooting with, I will go with the Leica SL2 and attach the Zeiss Otus 85mm with a Sigma adapter. I read and watch most of your reviews which I find to be very thorough and honest, and also very engaging. They don't influence my decisions, because I ultimately take into consideration many other reviewer's feedback, like Dustin Abbott, Jared Polin, Kai Wong and even Ken Rockwell before making a camera purchase. It has taken me the better part of one month to decide that the Leica SL2 is the one for me, even with it's average autofocus system. I can live with that since I mostly shoot outdoor portraits and prefer manual focus.
I’m glad to see you guys finally stepping up with the photo compositions in your videos. And the guest professional portrait photographer providing those excellent portraits were sublime!
Agree with Chris, Jordan on this, A sensor size does not in any way tell you what style of photography you should shoot. The GFX100 is an outstanding camera that is also very versatile and that is a big plus, as it means more photographers can benefit from its innovation and features.
The GFX100 is IMO a revolution. It’s a revolution because of all the integrated technologies. IBIS? Wow. Autofocus? Wow. Never seen on any other MF camera. And then the HMI. Fuji did it right and this for a price which is killing the competition. Well done, Fuji.
Wow what a review! I watched it twice! I just bought the Fuji X-T3 with the intent to learn all about photography... Once i master it all, i think this is the camera that i will be getting
The image quality is outstanding. I've shot 4x5 andf 8x10 large format film and this camera impresses me. I can get this GFX 100 with 3,000 shutter actuations in mint shape from Japan for $4300 Canadian. Its a no brainer and I'm going to get one.
To really replace my FFrame cameras, it would need to have equal "Black out" time. I get frustrated with the A7R2 when going to preview a image, and zoom in...Feels like a lot of time compared to my Canons. So 3 FPS is not a killer, but the time to playback or zoom..It just needs a stronger processing power. Maybe when they finally get nuclear power to push the processing? For now, I will stick to my Phase One in studio on high end work, and the FFrames for all else. Great review.....You're such the presenter!
Chris and Jordan are a team. I much prefer them to present the stills and video reviews at the same time. Separate titles are fine but release together. There is a GAS mystique for the larger sensor but logic has to be in place too. Use the right gear for the job.
Funny, You always shoot your videos with Panasonic GH5 and during the review of this camera I found myself marvel at the quality of video this little "smallsensor-beast" can produce in skilled hands. It would be interesting to see a video about "bang for the buck for videomakers" to compare the most popular videooptions out there. Is the GH5 still worth getting or have the tide turned? What are the effects on the firmware upgrades from the introduction until now? And are there better options in a similar pricerange? Darn it! And here you are reviewing an exiting mediumformat camera that I will never afford. Sorry, my thoughts took a turn there. Great video as always!
People that hate on this stuff are challenging. Use a camera how you want, not how it's arbitrarily and artificially determined to be used. You do you Chris and Jordan. Just make more content ;) (please)
Medium format is great for street photography. In the late 70's I was using a Bronco ETR then went to a Fuji 6X9 pro. I wish they made an R version of this camera like the GFX 50R.
There are about ten videos like this and I watch one every day. Why? Because I ordered the camera June 18 and have not received it (credit card not charged). Who knew a $10K body would become a big seller?
The sharpness as showcased in the portraits (enlarged to 1:1) and the marmot image is very impressive, although it doesn't appear to show quite that well in other images taken with the same lens at sufficiently fast shutter speeds.
12:00 That resolution tho. You can clearly see and count every individual cell of the strobe grid from the reflection on her eye. And I'm not even watching this in 4K but in 1440p.
Did you manage to test the 16bit tethering speed to capture one. My initial test was I find it quite slow. Around 5 sec for a 16bit raw file. Would like to hear if any one have better experience with it
I’m a little confused about that hybrid evf statement, what about the xpro and x100 lineup? Or does he want a glass evf with a hud inside? 😅 Considering the evf is replaceable there could be other options one day 👍
@@2MCHFRETMEProduction I mean, it's 2019, you can buy a 265 GB card which will fit 400 images at your settings. Did you turn on lossless compression for the raw images?
@@2MCHFRETMEProduction That sounds like compressed raw, since jpgs can already by 100MB, so 200 MB is only double that for a lot more information content.
Great video, first good review of this camera I have seen. I would totally buy this camera if I had the $, maybe in the future. You can take 1 photo and make a lot of different compositions because of the high res, if used the right way, has a lot of potential
Any thoughts on this not being a "true" medium format sensor? I've seen size comparisons with a 35mm, this and then the true sensor sizes of the Hasselblad's and Phase One sensors, which are x2.5 larger than the 35mm sensor. Know they're x4 more expensive than this Fujifilm.
Look at the beautiful image from 23mm F4, I kind of miss the era of Mamiya7 43mm and Zeiss Biogon 38mm. Unfortunately no one seems to be able to make an adapter to make those gems work on modern mirrorless cameras.
It would have been nice if you guys shared a few ideas about how it compares with other medium format bodies in the same price range. Great video nonetheless.
Great review BUT! At 1:38 you show two photos. The one on the right has me interested because I see you took the photo at 1/250th ss and 2500ISO... I dont get it. Why not reduce the shutter speed and lower the ISO for a cleaner image??? What am I missing here?? Can somebody explain?
People who think you can't use this camera for street photography are just fanatics. (Hate to pass judgement but this is a plaguing issue with gear reviews) It's a freaking camera!! People are free to use it wherever they like as long as they don't commit any crimes. Get a life people.
great video , my kind of shooting love the high pixel count images , iv had flack for saying so in the past but the dynamic range if like me you dont edit on a computer( in camera only) the d850 is good the fuji is awesome (i dont own one ) but know exactly where your coming from , having unedited photos on big enlargements, bigger the sensor the better they have to have the mp count to match , otherwise your basically just getting more critical depth controll ,
Viewing this on a 43" 4k monitor, the 2nd half of the video using the Fuji is noticeably softer with lack of detail compared to the GH5. I wonder if the Fuji is doing a lot of line skipping and the video downsampling algorithm isn't up to par? I know this camera isn't considered a "video" camera but I was expecting a little better considering the higher bit-rate and bit-depth. Hmmm
Im shooting with this in the next few weeks, but you talk about 16 BIT in relation to Dynamic Range?... Im maybe missing something here, even although i print my fine art work large... 16 BIT is for colour spectrum, not DR. Somebody please tell me ive missed something...
The way I look at it is if you spend 10 grand on a camera, you can shoot whatever the hell you want with it. Great review!
Hahaha love this!:)

@@JeremyGalloway no seriously, try it. It helps! Within seconds (hint). Also, you react disproportionately intense, which is rude in itself. I take no offence, but it's not so cool.
Hey Jordan, great composition and editing! Real excitement too from Chris. Chasing the Fujifilm GFX 100. All that's missing is a volcano. Cue the NatGeo fanfare... Any plans for the Calgary Stampede? Half a dozen GoPros, flaming DJIs from the sky. Dust! More Dust! Staring Fujifilm X-T3 12 bit? C'mon Amazon, give these guys some backup.
What i liked about this review is that it was made actually taking good poctures. Kuddos to the model and the mp artist.
really looking forward to the gfx100 video features video
This is some solid work you guys.
Jordan in a ball on the highway should be in every -2008 flickr gallery- episode.
That was a class act to use another photographer abilities for this camera ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
Just another note is the guy that do the video your assistant? I think he is a very prominent videographer he needs to have equal time 🤔. 😀
Otherwise great review.
even though its not for me, it definitely looks like an impressive camera. a huge step forward in making medium format versatile in more situations. congrats to fuji. also thanks to dpreview team for another excellent video. love the guest photographer and model. love it even more cause rene has minimal experience with fuji's mirrorless cameras.
FYI, you can custom map Preview Exp/WB in Manual Mode to a button. Definitely helps in the studio or low light shooting.
Loved both videos. Don't understand how you can use the wrong camera to take amazing photos.
It's like cars, they can all do basically the same thing, some are better in some situations, but who cares if it works.
the best review ive seen so far
Man, the video image out of this is amazing!
Chris, really lovely photos in this review! Thanks for the eye candy!
So beautiful location. Grip is thermal sink Chris, it has its use :)
In that case, why can't they do the 2 layer grip design like in the handguard on rifles? It would only make the grip slightly larger.
@DPReview, Did you update your lenses firmware before this review? The update added phase detect capability.
Now that is interesting. AFAIK even the GFX 50r and the brand new Hasselblad still have only contrast detect af.
William Miles La Mont I meant on the GFX100, it's the only large format camera to have phase detect
I bought my Fujifilm XT-20 based on binge watching Chris and Jordan :D
oh man, every location you guys go to is just so beautiful
Wow...that portret guy has some incredible..amazing talent, i am amazed!
Hey guys...you’ve done a superb review of the Fuji camera with the tallest sensor in their lineup. Keep it up and don’t fall off!
Sam E get to saving this is 10k US.
The image quality is outstanding. I've shot 4x5 andf 8x10 large format film and this camera impresses me. I can get this GFX 100 with 3,000 shutter actuations in mint shape from Japan for $4300 Canadian. Its a no brainer and I'm going to get one.
Man, the images are fabulous. You need a great environment for superb photos
Nice to see some portraits for a change. 👍🏾
Great review, great production value. you guys have become so good at this you make it look easy but I appreciate all the hard work.
Now I want to see a macro episode with the camera.
That would be interesting.
you'll be able to crop down to the cell structure
@@thegreatvanziniphotos5976 If they are going to this episode then they should let me do it. I show you a world that is incredible
They need to make a cheaper 50 mp MF camera with same IBIS, AF, etc. OR update the GFX50
I would love to replace my X Pro 2 with an improved GFX 50r with faster autofocus.
"Not bitter" Chris is best Chris!
The colors of graded GH5 footage and Fuji's Eterna are SO different.
I think the GH5 is way too saturated
If it's graded it depends on how they graded it...
14:34 "Do you really need 100mp? Now in all the confusion I kinda lost count. Well, do-ya, punk?"
The man, the myth, the legend - Dirty Harry!
Did you bring a matching LOOP fly rod? Seems like you went to some nice fly fishing locations.
It does echo very well my impressions after a few weeks of usage!
Was hoping for your thoughts on how the camera handles video. The detail and field of view looks really good for the second half of the video though.
If you watch the video, they say at the end that they’re making an entire video just about the video capabilities. Coming soon.
The sharpness as showcased in the portraits (enlarged to 1:1) and the marmot image is very impressive, although it doesn't appear to show quite that well in other images taken with the same lens at sufficiently fast shutter speeds.
Those portraits were heavily retouched, which leads me to believe some sharpening was added in post... which would be a disservice to this video.
your snarkiness in response to the complainers was humorous and made me subscribe to your channel. bravo!
Great review, as specially the ending ! (full of truth and objectivity) :)
12:00 That resolution tho. You can clearly see and count every individual cell of the strobe grid from the reflection on her eye. And I'm not even watching this in 4K but in 1440p.
Quality video. Loved the pacing and featured photos.
There needs to be talk about the medium format “look” it is very different
Did you manage to test the 16bit tethering speed to capture one. My initial test was I find it quite slow. Around 5 sec for a 16bit raw file. Would like to hear if any one have better experience with it
I died at the opening skit, that's what makes these reviews so good.
Great video, as always, and chock full of the kind of information photographers really need. Thanks!
I’m a little confused about that hybrid evf statement, what about the xpro and x100 lineup? Or does he want a glass evf with a hud inside? 😅
Considering the evf is replaceable there could be other options one day 👍
What kind of file sizes are we talking about on this thing? @dpreview
On a 32gb card I got about 50 images at RAW+JPEG
2MCHFRETMEProduction damn! I mean, that’s not AWFUL. Just gotta make those shots count.
@@2MCHFRETMEProduction I mean, it's 2019, you can buy a 265 GB card which will fit 400 images at your settings. Did you turn on lossless compression for the raw images?
@@problemat1que I can't remember, but each RAW file was around 200mb . The camera holds 2 SD cards. I only brought one to the hands on day .
@@2MCHFRETMEProduction That sounds like compressed raw, since jpgs can already by 100MB, so 200 MB is only double that for a lot more information content.
Why are you using a tripod and stuff instead of handhold on all those shots? The shutter speed seemed fast enough 🤔
Nice work guys, love your reviews
Look at the beautiful image from 23mm F4, I kind of miss the era of Mamiya7 43mm and Zeiss Biogon 38mm. Unfortunately no one seems to be able to make an adapter to make those gems work on modern mirrorless cameras.
9:33 "And it does flip out One Direction like this just like the band."
but it flips out in two directions...
In my film school, I thought my photography teacher's GFX R was superb, this is a whole new level.
Maybe, because this is a review, he wants to show how clean the high iso is?
People who think you can't use this camera for street photography are just fanatics. (Hate to pass judgement but this is a plaguing issue with gear reviews)
It's a freaking camera!! People are free to use it wherever they like as long as they don't commit any crimes. Get a life people.
You guys are LEGENDS
My first camera, 40 years ago was a Fujica AX-1, should I get a GFX 100 ?
:o)
Love your channel ... great reviews and excellent quality .... greatings from Germany ...
great video , my kind of shooting love the high pixel count images , iv had flack for saying so in the past but the dynamic range if like me you dont edit on a computer( in camera only) the d850 is good the fuji is awesome (i dont own one ) but know exactly where your coming from , having unedited photos on big enlargements, bigger the sensor the better they have to have the mp count to match , otherwise your basically just getting more critical depth controll ,
"its only 2019, I'm sorry" HAHAHAHA CRACKED ME UP SO HARD
That's nice. I want to go somewhere foggy too. Right now, all I get here is haze.
