@@jacobh5817 yes, I do agree that in some aspects the GF 110mm f/2 is superior. But, what I am after is who is it for. Who should use it. When to stop down to remove chromatic abberrations, how compact it is, how it feels in the hand, etc. The field of views are different on both lenses, right? Who on Earth would use this for sports and action, or wish to shoot more than seven frames in quick succession? I do chuckle when you criticise kit for not being able to do things for which it was never intended, nor actually used for by the vast majority of people.
Only thing is, as always, devaluation - the GFX100s being relatively still new still trades for above $9000 Australian on my end, but get this, and trust me - I am very tempted! - my local guy has a more or less original GFX100 with less than a thousand shots on the shutter, complete with box, charger and two batteries - price guv'nor then? - $7200 Australian dollars. Silliness. Rather surprised he still has it listed on his website to be honest....
The part with IBIS is funny. I had an Oly M1 II and with a 50mm equivalent lens I easily got 1/2 sec shots in perfect focus. Guess smaller sensors have advantages too :)
it's about 2cm wide. that would be a huge pea :) actually, people underestimate, but i find them quite capable. my full frame camera has more "sensor horsepower", but the micro(b) 4/3 one is not a gimmick too.
@@momchilyordanov8190 My main camera is a Nikon Z7, and I can shoot it comfortably at 1/4th of a second at 50mm. I’d be *appalled* if I had to make do with 1/FL or thereabouts handheld, and I’m leveraging 45MP (more pixel-dense than the GFX 100S, actually).
@@Ildskalli I had the Z6 and the IBIS was good. Oly one was better though. Depends what you shoot, really. But I like to shoot around the city at night and ironically, the m43 was very good in that department. Because on theory m43 struggles exactly when it's dark :)
You guys need to remember one important variable you are all forgetting. The photographer. IBIS+how steady YOU can hold it and YOU'RE ability to press the shutter without moving the camera=how slow you can handhold.
@@josh885 that is true to some extent, but it's me who shoot both cameras and my abilities to hold steady did not improve just because i took the little one :) the smaller sensors are simply easier to get stabilized, which gives benefits in some scenarios.
I gotta say, you’re wrong about vertical grips. Even if I don’t use the camera in the vertical orientation, the v-grip adds much needed surface area to the regular grip. I have an add on vertical grip on my Nikon and I can’t stand to go without it.
lol medium format for sport? sounds like you cant shoot sport back in the film era as well this camera is for landscape and portrait you want shoot sport get z9 or 1dsmk3
It am starting to consider this camera, because I used and loved the 1Ds III, 1Dx III and now thinking about getting the R3. But, I do a lot of portrait work. And while it is nice to have some fast FPS for certain shots. It's not really that needed. Mostly had it for my birding side of things and events. But those are not my bread and butter, portraits are. So for the same money as the R3 I can get something that is plenty fast for the majority of my shoots and give me insane IQ in comparison. I don't have to have 100mp, but if I'm spending this kind of money. It's a why not. Especially since I would be buying new RF lenses anyway.
The 50r is good enough the price is great cheap used too. Once you buy medium format you're going to have so many people contacting you're not gonna keep up 😅😂
You guys are in Canada. I understand that majority of your viewers are in the US and knowing how much a camera costs in USD gives everyone around the globe an idea about its value. However I am wondering why you never mention the current prices of the cameras you review in CAD also?
It really is for the reason you stated. Sometimes I'm known to do some ridiculous conversion rates for fun though so regardless you wouldn't get an accurate CDN amount from me, even if I did mention it.
Excellent review. I know, I know... this isn't a sports camera. But based on your experience, do you feel that one could comfortably shoot, say, a live performance event with it (how is the high-iso, btw)? And do I understand correctly that if you want to shoot in 16-bit, you can only shoot on the lowest frame-rate? Also wondering if this camera has an intervalometer should one want to use it for astro work. Just to trying to determine how big the potential drawbacks really are, as I'd definitely like to make the move to an MF sensor.
Regarding the optional grip: The 50S already had one so WHY on earth didn't Fuji just use it? It's such a blunder and I don't get it at all. Why build a modular system and then make NOTHING compatible? Seriously, the only thing that's compatible are the lenses - you can't even use the batteries from the previous GFX cameras because they changed it. Why, Fuji, WHY?! The 50S is fantastic because you can use if without the EVF and without the battery grip to have a very lightweight landscape camera - or you can slap everything on for a comfortable studio session. The 100S could be the perfect camera if it was a bit more modular.
I'm thinking of getting one as a regular everyday camera but just shooting jpg as in 30 years I'll kick myself that I didn't capture family photos in the fantastic resolution I could. Would you say the camera performs well for general usage like that. I have a Fuji X h1 I love but this is something else. Thanks. Will use with 32 to 64 zoom I think
For you, a Nikon Z9 would be better. With the Nikon Z9 you will be able to freeze every movement of children chasing pets, natural family movements. And it's a camera without a shutter. No shot count. You can shoot as much as you want.
So any chance of a lens test for AF speed and 100MP quality for as many as you can borrow? Kinda a big factor in a buy decision IMHO... Also if they introduce a law allowing daughters to claim retrospective modelling fees in years to come you might be in trouble, unless you had it covered Easter-Egg wise... Plus in the gallery I see one image "JPEG (297.2MB)", I mean really??!!?? I thought 14-bit Raws were c. 100MB... ah, I think it's a miss-named 16-bit Raw file... P.S. how is the last image in your dpreview gallery a 311,648,258 byte JPEG? Surely the (not provided) Raw file was smaller than that?
The way I see it kids will ALWAYS owe their parents for the rest of their lives so... As for that last picture it's the 400MP multishot file which is ridiculous in file size.
For me it's the 50mp MF sensors which are the real advantage over similar resolution full frame, because the pixels are so much bigger. Going to 100mp on the same sized sensor just makes the pixel size about the same as (or even smaller than) the full frame competition.
You make a good point, however the gfx 100s sensor is newer technology vs the 50 so the sensor performance is still better even at a smaller pixel size.
I kind of laugh at the idea of "sports and action" shooting with a Medium format camera... Pretty incredible camera though. Think that Fuji will come up with an R (Rangefinder) version of the GFX100S as they did with the 50R? Also, Medium format sensors (over a 50 MP full frame sensor still has superior image quality because of larger pixels, and there is a special look to the colors a medium format sensor.
Back in 35mm film slr days, it was not all that hard to get nice sharp images at 1/30th with a 50mm lens. Image stabilization was not a thing back then. In some ways we’re going backwards.
Not really. Even with some slight motion blur at 100% viewing due to higher MP, at the same output size any modren ILC camera, especially this one, will blow 35mm film out of the water in terms of resolution, color accuracy, dynamic range, smooth tonal transitions, ect.
Well, the images might be technically better, but the beauty of photos is subjective and many photos taken with film look better than digital ones to many people.
@@ditto1958 Film only looks better to people with rose colored glasses. It can have different looks though in terms of contrast, color saturation, and color cast SOOC. But if you want a certain film look can get that with digital. There are many film simulation presets for popular raw editors and even in camera. This camera for example uses fuji's very excellent film simulation modes which capture one supports. So you get film look but in a quality that isn't embarrassing for 2021. Film is simply worse in every way. Even artistically. Since with a digital file you can have any artistic look you want, including simulating different films. All without the need for toxic, polluting, foul smelling chemicals to develop it too.
This isn't just a GFX100 issue, all top Fuji models after a few months get their half-priced replacements with the same sensor, same/comparable AF in a smaller body.
It's been two years since the GFX 100 came out, and it's still better in some respects. Working commercial photographers have already amortized the expense several times over. It's not an issue. Same goes for the X series: the cheaper bodies can produce the same image quality but have less usability, so the higher-grade bodies are still valuable in their own right.
@Carlos Vega I'm not saying that xt2 and xt20 are the same cameras. They are not. This politics also works for Fuji (they are selling well for a while). But I wouldn't say I like it. Just look at Fuji bodies' used market, bargains on every corner (for a reason).
I tested the system thoroughly during 2 weeks but although I so much wanted to love it , the system remains bulky , slow AF , AF-C that is not reliable and the bayer sensor gives not the same charm as x trans does in the apsc system. The camera lies very good in the hand but the 102 Mp are just an overkill to my thoughts and makes AF much more critical. The 80/1.7 performs bad in AF-C.Sorry to say but I couldn’t hardly find an added value against my Sony A7R4.
These are all fair enough points (except one regarding your comment on X-Trans). But, I think the fundamental problem with your testing of this camera is that you went in with completely the wrong expectations. You were essentially comparing functions to functions with Full Frame mirrorless cameras. You’ve to realise that although Fujifilm’s GFX system uses a “baby” size Medium Format sensor, it is still 70% larger than a Full Frame sensor, also the aspect ratio are not the same. Because there is so much more data to be processed, it will always be slower than any Full Frame or APSC cameras, but the GFX100S is already by far the fastest, the most nimble and has the best AF system of any Medium Format cameras to date. The slow AF was also lens dependent (if you use Fujifilm’s lenses with Linear Motor, it will have a faster AF than the lenses without). AF-C being not reliable is the problem of the Fujifilm AF system in general (same goes for their X mount cameras) - their AF-C algorithm is very different from Sony’s and Canon’s. You have to make lots of small adjustments in the menu to fine tune the AF-C behaviour in order to get a much more reliable AF-C tracking, which is also subject dependent. It’s very finicky compared to Sony and Canon (which work out of the box). You mentioned the bulky size. The GFX100S is already a revolution in compact size and weight in the Medium Format world. At 900g, it is the same size as the old Canon EOS 5D, and only 160g heavier than a Canon R5. But the grip and handling is much more ergonomic and comfortable than any Sony cameras (for me anyways). So all in all, to a lot of people, the GFX100S is major breakthrough for Medium Format cameras, and with a price point firmly targeting the high-end Full Frame market, with only AF speed and the slightly larger size and slightly heavier weight being the only compromise, but this packs in 100MP in a sensor that is 70% larger than Full Frame sensor - hell it’s actually cheaper than the Sony A1! I know not many people will need 100MP, but this camera is all about the ultimate in image quality. It’s the same that not many people need Sony A1’s speed and fancy specs.
@@ryanhoviolin Thank you. It's such a pleasure reading such well-articulated and cohesive points, and although I'm a complete novice in the GFX system (and photography in general), I could follow your points well.
@@stevenlau9180 thanks so much Steven. Just giving my two cents as an experienced Fujifilm shooter and trying to point people to a more realistic expectations with Fujifilm’s GFX system. The first inclination for most people not experienced with Medium Format is to compare them to the best of Full Frame and APSC systems. But the GFX system is a completely different animal - it has never been about the speed and compactness until now. And only 5 years ago, medium format was only usable in a studio environment on a tripod. But with this new GFX100S, you can pretty much carry around with you anywhere and handheld shoot to your hearts content 😊
@They Caged Non I have no affiliation with any brand! My most loved system is aps-c Fuji!I just wanted to give honest experience. This makes one not a Sony fan boy! Some people just don’t appreciate critiques. Does that mean that I should just go tighter and suck it? I don't believe that suggesting just one lens for everybody is a good advice. I gladly support this channel for their content and robbing them the opportunity to review according to Fuji "the fastest lens for Medium Format" is just sad. Their content is equally as important as other people you support. I like how they present their data and "real world" results. It's not just about "your" preferences, it's for people who want or likes that focal length and if they are willing to put up with the compromises of the GF 80mm f/1.7.
@@davidjohnbalce1111 I fully agree that when you need the 80mm focal length, that’s what you should go for. Just saying that if you have the room to take a few steps back and don’t mind the slightly stronger compression, the 110 is the better lens. Dustin Abbott has done a review of the 80/1.7. He’s very thorough in his reviews.
Excellent review! Thank you!

Loving the top LCD copied from the PHASE ONE IQ3. Hasselblad need to up their game where their H6D 100 & 400MS look extremely vulnerable
Wow 11:30 🔥🔥
Who on Earth would use this for sports and action, or wish to shoot more than seven frames in quick succession? I do chuckle when you criticise kit for not being able to do things for which it was never intended, nor actually used for by the vast majority of people.
Great review guys!
Only thing is, as always, devaluation - the GFX100s being relatively still new still trades for above $9000 Australian on my end, but get this, and trust me - I am very tempted! - my local
guy has a more or less original GFX100 with less than a thousand shots on the shutter, complete with box, charger and two batteries - price guv'nor then? - $7200 Australian dollars. Silliness. Rather surprised he still has it listed on his website to be honest....
Great review! Do you think we will be seeing an XH2 in 2021?
The part with IBIS is funny. I had an Oly M1 II and with a 50mm equivalent lens I easily got 1/2 sec shots in perfect focus. Guess smaller sensors have advantages too :)
it's about 2cm wide. that would be a huge pea :) actually, people underestimate, but i find them quite capable. my full frame camera has more "sensor horsepower", but the micro(b) 4/3 one is not a gimmick too.
@@momchilyordanov8190
My main camera is a Nikon Z7, and I can shoot it comfortably at 1/4th of a second at 50mm.
That 2:38 there is a beautiful frame, Jordan.
Should make a playlist for all fujifilm related videos
lol medium format for sport? sounds like you cant shoot sport back in the film era as well this camera is for landscape and portrait you want shoot sport get z9 or 1dsmk3
how about the new PENTAX K3 iii
Thanks, the only thing i needed was a low light test and nobody did that
It am starting to consider this camera, because I used and loved the 1Ds III, 1Dx III and now thinking about getting the R3.
Once you buy medium format you're going to have so many people contacting you're not gonna keep up 😅😂
Always great to see camera reviews from you guys!
Notorious for rolling shutter
Do a matchup between this and Sony alpha 1
You guys are in Canada. I understand that majority of your viewers are in the US and knowing how much a camera costs in USD gives everyone around the globe an idea about its value. However I am wondering why you never mention the current prices of the cameras you review in CAD also?
It really is for the reason you stated. Sometimes I'm known to do some ridiculous conversion rates for fun though so regardless you wouldn't get an accurate CDN amount from me, even if I did mention it.
It’s because they work for a US company.
@@niccollsvideo Fair enough, Thanks Chris, cheers!
Wait…did this review occur in a landscape setting and not one image taken with the 65:24 XPAN aspect ratio? No…I must have missed it.
Finally! I have been waiting for your guys take! Let's go!!!!
Hi. Which GF lens and at what aperture did you use for Jordan's video review section? Thanks!
anyone know if there’s an updated version of the GFX 50r coming? i’m hoping for something more similar to my film rangefinders.
Is the background hiss of the video portion from the GFX’s preamps?
Me: Even though it's getting old, my D800 is still more camera than I need, I love it, and I have no plans to upgrade!
Also me: (◔‿◔)
Thats true🤣
Just started shooting a Canon 5d mark ii. I have a bunch of older Nikons. This Fuji is a great camera but the older cameras are nice for me.
@@crsantin I'm just planning to buy a 5d2, magic lantern looks incredible
Same here, D800e my father gave me still rocks it just takes all the photos that I want
What about manual focus? And could you use it for street photography if you were daft enough?
Manual is smooth enough. And for street? Why not! I totally would myself.
The 50mm (a little bigger than) "pancake" lens is popular for street. Zone focusing is harder due to shallow DOF.
Street . Yes
Anyone know if GFX100S has automated focus bracketing function for stacking?
Hey Chris what camera bag are you using? I’m on the market for a new bag
How video stabilization works? Especially interested with gf 45-100.
I’d love to know this too!
Does the camera have a crop mode setting for full frame lenses?
What camera was this filmed with?
New Fujifilm video, Yeah!!!
How does it compare with the Hasselblad X1D 2 50C?
There’s still snow there? Sweet!
It’s Canada😂
how to use gfx 50s without stand. becuse of shutter lag images are blurry
This camera is about stills. It's amazing. No full frame can touch it.
What lenses are available for this camera today?
5:00 bokeh is insane looks like a green screen
So medium format in an X-H1 body?
Must borrow from 401k!
0:17 Hello from Greenland 🇬🇱🤣
im selling my outdated gfx 50r buying the best mirrorless camera at the moment canon eos r5 i have also in mind sony's flagship
YOU MEAN DOWNGRADING 😂 good luck with that ROTF
Bomb ass review, as always.
11:50 Did you take a picture of this landscape?
I kind of laugh at the idea of "sports and action" shooting with a Medium format camera... Pretty incredible camera though. Think that Fuji will come up with an R (Rangefinder) version of the GFX100S as they did with the 50R? Also, Medium format sensors (over a 50 MP full frame sensor still has superior image quality because of larger pixels, and there is a special look to the colors a medium format sensor.
That starting though 🤣🤣#OP
"They lie to you just to get you up here." Hahahaha!
Perfect camera for Instagram.
I must admit Fuji did a great job improving the MFsystem , but sometimes GFX is presented as a plus ultra to full frame , but to my experience it certainly is NOT.
@They Caged Non I think some people just can’t accept criticism
