That would confirm their status as rookies coming into F1. Lando was considered a solid prospect but not the best in the class whereas Oscar was basically touted as a generational prospect before he even entered the grid.

For years now the narrative has been 'Lando's getting there, Lando's getting there', but I feel like a world champion level driver almost always 'gets there', and is up to speed, very quickly, like in 1-2 seasons. Some examples:
    - Hamilton fighting for the title in his rookie season.
    - Verstappen winning his first race with RB.
    - Vettel winning Monza in the wet with a Toro Rosso.
Or look at how quickly Leclerc got poles and wins in his first season with Ferrari, or how Piastri won a sprint race in his rookie season.
I just don't see it with Lando. Don't get me wrong, he's very fast and talented, but something's missing.
He could've won Sochi 2021 and should've won Monza 2021 (Ricciardo won ffs!).
We were always told that as soon as Lando would get the fastest car, the wins would be coming in. But that's not the case is it?
I think Verstappen, Hamilton and even Leclerc would've won more races in that Mclaren, and those are the drivers you're up against.
Like, some people are still acting like he's a beginner, but he's in his 6th season now!

    • @Robalexe
      @Robalexe 2 месяца назад +87

I fully believe Russell would've done a lot more in that McLaren than Lando this season. He has as many poles and wins (actually should have more wins without the DSQ) this year as Lando, despite having a car that can challenge at the very front far less times than McLaren

Yeah Lando has the Sergio mindset where one mistake snowballs into 10. Likes of Hamilton, Verstappen switch to a damage limitations mindset immediately and start a recovery drive for the ages. I think it's not just a drivers loss of confidence although and I think this is where race engineers or the best ones shine. I don't think Lando has a good race engineer that knows how to communicate with a racers mindset. When the driver is dejected and is in a doom spiral because of a mistake you have to give them a series of easy to achieve red meats they can chew on if that makes sense. For example giving up the spot in Hungary; Will Joseph wasted valuable time emotionally manipulating a driver and breaking their confidence by putting them in a villain role. What Will Joseph should have done is convince Lando that giving the spot back immediately would have him capable of passing Oscar cleanly in the remaining 20 laps. A driver would go for that as if it was their idea ... Will Joseph never tried convincing Lando that a win was possible by giving the spot back early and doing the pass. At Spa Will should have given Lando the information on Oscar to get Lando's competitive juices flowing instead of settling behind Max.

Lando has always had good race starts (Not so much recently, due to a drop in form). He has always got pole in the worst tracks.
In Spain, there was a head wind, meaning slipstream would be more extreme going to turn 1, and a slightly worse start than Max didnt help at all.
Same for Hungary. No headwind, but it is an EXTREMELY long run to turn 1, meaning he was never going to go into turn 1 alone unless someone in 2nd or 3rd completely fucked their start. Says a lot that Max got a worse start than both McLaren's that race and STILL got side by side into turn 1.

Agreed ... there is a lack of aggression and plenty of hedging to survive T1 as if he's in the midfield trying to survive that melee. His mindset to cover and avoid is not what the front mindset is about. The front mindset is about capturing the fresh air, boxing out someone trying on the outside, hanging it in there when someone is on the inside, racing towards the perfect spots to get tows or defending that corner. Lando has learned most of his race starts from the midfield days of McLaren ... starting at the front it seems Oscar has more relevant experience coming in from F2. Oscar sending it twice (Hungary and Spa) down the inside and Lando yielding and literally at Spa ducking to the outside compromising his race seems like Oscar got the measure of him on race starts. Also Lando has slow get aways and his team may have chosen a race start engine maps that saves tire life where he brings it in slowly but they surely know some tracks position matters more like Hungary.

    - His start in Hungary
    - Him paying attention enough for the pass in the sprint in Austria & then passing Sainz in the race
    - His performance pre-safety car in Miami

Totally agree mate you said it all thanks cause now I don’t need to say much at all. I’m usually always up for a bit of writing However I’ve been writing for the last 12 hours and I’m getting tired and still I’m suddenly in a flow and it’s hard to stop. George will win next yeas WDC but not too far ahead of Oscar and then it’s time to Oscar to show the World what true Aussie grit and determination is and just beat down on everyone who dares disturbs his flow. He’s already faster than Lando fundamentally and poor Lando should’ve won 5 of the last 6 races but he’s got a severe lack of Mental Fortitude and zero % killer Instinct and they are the two most important elements to an athlete who is good to go on and become the best. That’s why George will win in ‘25 then Oscar will dominate for a few years and beyond Oscar there really isn’t anyone special that I can see but Oscar is young and could win 10 WDC Titles and become the new undisputed GOAT. I don’t have a crystal ball and I’m not psychic but I guarantee that George and Oscar will both win the next two WDC Titles or the two of them may win the next several tbh cause Max won’t hang around at Mercedes with George beating him cause that’s 100% happening and Lando and Charles don’t have what it takes to be a Champion and it’s really that simple so how many can they win certainly until 2030 I can’t see any competition for them not Kimi, not Olli, nobody. They are the two with the pedigree of course and clearly the mental fortitude required along with a healthy Killer Instinct that George showed in Spa it’s a shame that the tyres wore down so much and combined with the extra fuel and the plank wear from being flat through Eau Rouge and Radion is just a shame that they were light but had there been a normal cool down lap there wouldn’t be any discussion cause the pick up 1.5 in marbles easily enough so on any other Circuit with the same circumstances George babes 25-26 points and then the discussion is completely different. It’s unfortunate for George to have lost 50 points in 3 races but it’s not over with 10 races to go I see Mercedes winning 6-7 of them honestly with the majority in favour of George and Oscar I see him especially in Qatar and I’ll be there for that in my Papaya of course and 3 days later I’ll be in Abu Dhabi for the final race which I hope is for the title and winner takes all. If the Championship is over I’ll be highly disappointed but I don’t se Max currently finishing higher than 5th place but he might sneak a couple of sneaky podiums cause he’s Max but the car is abominable now Adrian has left and Max is mighty pissed cause this shit was never in the game plan it was supposed to be 4 5 easy easy ta very much 5 straight now let’s check out the point and squirt dynamically different cars to drive and adaptation is a major skill set that the best drivers in the World have and thrive on such challenges as the ability to drive in a variety of different styles to achieve their desired results with any given situation and it’s sorts the men from the boys and I’ll say this’King George’ easily the most adaptable driver on the grid and he’s so used to driving sh1tboxes that he’ll be very confident from the first lap I suggest and that factual and knowledge based opinion but I’ll bet it’s bloody close to being spot on and I’ll challenge anyone who has a vastly different opinion. Similar does count cause I’ve given myself a margin of error. Oscar will be in the mix and I don’t see Max on the grid after getting beat by George who stated to the World “ I’m faster than Max put us in the same car and I’ll prove it” George doesn’t talk shit he’s very candid and his filter is high his intellect is massive and he choses his words carefully and I know because I’ve met him and we actually spoke about that very thing at Tommy Hilfiger store in Melbourne this March 22nd after Qualifying and we spoke for a few minutes. I came from Albert Park after Qualifying but my son went and waited in line from 1045 was second in the que with his GF and waited till 7 when George arrived. He was great. My 16 year old son was shy to ask for a selfie so I told him your 2nd in line been waiting speak to him normally like a human and ask him what comes to mind whatever is natural but definitely ask he’d mind have a selfie so you can look back at the time you met your hero. He’ll talk to you he won’t bite. And sure enough him and his GF 2nd first guy was scared didn’t speak no photo and my son a GF go up and he’s asked basically straight away but George said let me have a go I’m not bad at this , they had a conversation for a minute and then he asked what if anything he’d like written on his cap, and his GF interpreted and says excuse me Mr Russell but are those Ferrari caps just behind you, you see I’d actually prefer one of those if you wouldn’t mind and they’re available I’m a big Charles fan but I’m a fan of the skill set that people display and your very quick and precise you’ve won lots to this point and you’ll do well if you stay on the right trajectory. I’ll be watching because my boyfriend is your biggest fan. Actually Mr Russell your biggest fan is up next and he called you King George and makes me say it if I’m talking about you. I seriously cannot believe but I’ve got this on my phone on video and he’s like of course I’ll write a message if you don’t mind and he signs and writes with Lve from Mr Russell think of me when the shadow is cast on Charles and he says something to my son about so do you know this guy and he says that’s my Dad he’s obsessed with f1 and he lives it breathes it and knows everything and the 3 years you were at Williams were painful cause even Lewis nor Mclaren we’re winning but his hopes were on you getting the seat and now he compels your drive a beep box at Mercedes to not like the one when you subbed in for Lewis when he had Covid. He was going crazy you should’ve won that race 3 times over he says and I never hear the end of the fact that your just unlucky in certain circumstances. He didn’t shut up, threw me under the bus and then they got all 3 in a photo I’m videoing and I’m up I said George what did my son tell you, if in fact that was my son. Apparently your a big fan and you’ve followed my carrier which I appreciate because you need that support and every little bit helps and it gives you belief and confidence. I just said sorry you didn’t get the same kind of opportunity as Lewis it would be nice to have that over him but you’ve got him covered you’d have Max covered if the car wasn’t a shit box in the current regs trust the new regs to have created havoc but I believe and you’ve prove that your World Class and in 3 years you’ll be top of the tree because RedBull won’t or can’t maintain this it’s Mercedes I’ve worked for Mercedes and their ethics are just to be the best and if your not don’t bother. I’m sure Toto sails that daily but you stay sharp I support you I spend time defending your ass frankly so let chat next year and I’ll pray you have a better car. You deserve it and you don’t need the best just goos right. You can drive anything good luck you’ve got big support and belief mate that’s for the pleasure of watching I’m here every year and usually around Asia or Middle East these days I’ll see you in Qatar and Abu Dhabi this year hopefully for a decider of the Championship. I’m backing you all the way to that title man and now I’ve met you I see it 100% your focused laser focused don’t lose sight of the target objectives and you’ll be fine I know. Well Done in advance. I hope we cross paths again Champ. And we stood and watched for a while he was only supposed to see the first 50 but he stayed and had to be practically dragged out after seeing over a 100 I’d say. Top bloke. I looked in his eyes and he’s totally on it in all of the time I’ve never seen such focus in another driver or sports person including Rodger Federer who I worked with as personal protection at the Melbourne Central roof top where he was giving tips and having a hit with 30 odd kids they just rotated after each shot and a couple of the say 16-17 year olds smashed the ball past him and he didn’t enjoy that but they were focused and and intent. Was great to watch. Everyone is human and deserves equal treatment unless they do you wrong then personally I cut them after one strike. Friends say I’m harsh I call it self preservation. I don't believe Lando is a bad driver all of a sudden, but I do think there are several factors that maybe explain these recent misses. The frustration of waiting for a good racing car for more than 5 years which makes him too eager to prove that he's championship material, but it makes him prone to mistakes. His own frustration with himself that he cannot be on top of the situation once that good car was "delivered" (maybe they didn't expect for that car to be that good this year). And a quick team mate that is not going to be accomodating and who will not be a traditional number 2 driver.
Also, mistakes are always easier to hide in the mid pack. Not so much when you are leading the pack.

Yeah about the strategic thinking ... I 100% agree. Lando doesn't have the gutsy hail-mary approach like George or the clever scheming like Alonso, or the adaptable precision of Hamilton, or the massive aggression of Max with strategy. He's too tentative, apprehensive, hedging, indecisive on decisions. His race engineer while a good communicator is not adept at talking to a racer and incentivizing their competitive streak so the messages are muddled and mild mannered but not energizing or dense with information. One big issue is they have left Lando with too much strategic decision making when it should be the pitwall with the strategists they pay big bucks making these calls not a driver under duress. They need to give Lando space to operate as a driver and make input that influence strategy not expect him to make strategy. This has been the over correction from Sochi 2021, they need to reel back some of that strategy freedom back from the driver.

He's the ringleader of those drivers that would downplay other driver's achievements (something you would expect only casual fan or trolls would do). Maybe jealousy or just pure upbringing leads him to do this. The ultimate outcome of his ridiculousness is the unwanted pressure he has brought on himself. I think he's gonna get way worse before he gets better. From his personality type, I expect him to now even double down on his behaviour, such as been defensive in interviews, blaming others and which will ultimately needs to more errors. He has to realise that he is not what he think he is yet, he needs to humble down, get mentorship and come back as a person of himself (a great driver with his unique style that doesn't need to invalidate others to feel worthy).

If Lando were to ever leave McLaren, I don't think Mercedes is the answer. Toto is absolutely in love with Kimi (and Max). The choices would be RB (if Max leaves), Aston Martin (if they're actually good once Alonso retires), and maybe Audi.

Oscar has basically matched all of lando’s achievements in 2 seasons. He’s got 1 more sprint win than lando, they’ve both won a race, both gotten pole positions, both won driver of the day, etc etc. Only difference is that it took lando 118 GP’s to achieve all those and it took oscar 36.

No idea, they are both very good. Piastri has had the edge in the last two races but Lando was having the better season. But for Max turning into him, Lando wins in Austria. If McLaren just put him on the mediums, he wins at Silverstone. If McLaren, don't try the overcut and then immediately bottle it, he finishes in front of Max in Spa.
Who knows what the future will hold in terms of development. Piastri looks like the real deal, but Lando was leading the way for McLaren for most of the season.
The idea that Lando is suddenly shit is ridiculous the margins in Hungary were incredibly as he demonstrated in the final laps disappearing down the road.
I think what McLaren have is two really good drivers, who will both improve as they get more wins under their belts.
And I say this as someone who finds Lando to be a bit of a tit, who still needs to grow up a bit. Piastri might have less experience in F1, but I think Lando has more to gain from age and life experience. Piastri already has a maturity that makes Lando seem emotionally volatile.

Lando should’ve taken the kerb in Austria, he should’ve taken the initiative at Silverstone, and he should’ve taken pole at Spa. He wants to be a champion but he’s not acting like one. These are all things that a driver like Verstappen or Hamilton would do (and indeed in the case of Hamilton at Silverstone, did do) that have a drastic effect on the championship.

    • @MH-jx1hc
      @MH-jx1hc 2 месяца назад +2

@@ChrisStoneinator I disagree about Austria. He is on the limit on breaking, no one could suddenly react to the other driver turning left into him. Same thing happened to Hamilton at Silverstone in '21 and he got blamed for it as well. Max won't give up position and will just drive into people. There is no mitigating for that, as it is completely unreasonable behaviour.
Go up on to the kerb he's got a grip imbalance across the car making out braking impossible. Give Verstappen extra room and he would just have come further across on to a better racing line, making him faster and harder to put brake. Norris had to be where he was to make the overtake feasible.
Should he have waited for a later lap? Possibly but he had the tyre advantage then and we all know that they can disappear quickly because this generation of tyres gets hot and lose performance when a following driver starts sliding in the dirty air of a car they are trying to overtake. We saw that at Spa. Hamilton's first attempt on Russell was the closest he got. Each lap he lost just a fraction more time.
Austria is on Verstappen. He is a great driver and one of the very best ever on the brakes in a car highly regarded for it's stability under braking. He turned left deliberately. The only way you can ever deal with a guy like that is not to jump out of his way, otherwise you'll be his bitch for the rest of your career.

@@ChrisStoneinator With regards to Silverstone, yes, he could have said give me the mediums. However, the mitigation comes from the fact that a sensible driver he knows he is in the cockpit of a racing car and not sitting on a pit wall with all the data. He has to presume that the uncertainty of the team must mean that they have concerns over the pre race strategy. The are after all offering an apparent choice between the soft and the hard.
The main problem though is that McLaren make a classic mistake, they ask a leading question. Effectively, they ask, "Do you want race for the lead, who is on softs, or give up and protect against Verstappen, who is on hards?"
One can tell from Norris's intonation that he is taken back. Verstappen at that point is someway back and he was close to the lead. He initially goes I want to go towards the softer end. Not specifically the softs but he definitely doesn't want to give up and match the guy who is at that point a distant third.
So, yes he could have said, just give me the mediums. However, I put the blame more on McLaren for asking one of the worst questions I've ever heard posed to a driver.

Oscar has become my favorite so far after Carlos because I’m Spanish so kind of biased there hehe. But what I like about Oscar is that he is calm and collected like Carlos, I think that’s what makes him stay focused and keeps getting podiums, he doesn’t let emotions or anger get in the way. He learn what most of us takes years to master and that is we have no control over the rest of the stuff we don’t control!
