    A HUGE thank you to JC Santana and his crew for the chat and for kindly letting me use their footage for this video! JC is an absolute luminary when it comes to functional training, as I think is apparent from even a few minutes of hearing him speak! I'll be uploading the full interview to the site shortly, and you can find some clips on my Instagram in the meantime. And stay tuned as hopefully I'll have more stuff with him in future!
    My Instagram: / thebioneer
    This video explains the basics of functional training / functional fitness and how it can apply to athletes or the average person. Essentially, functional training is training to improve functionality. This can either be specific (e.g. for a sport) or it can be more general (to make you healthier and more functional in day-to-day life).
    JC has worked with MMA fighters and a bunch of other top athletes and has made some fascinating observations regarding the function of the body in motion. It's as much as being able to transfer momentum and energy as it is being able to generate it.
    Other ideas I touch on here include Georges Hebert's Natural Method, which has since gone on to inspire MovNat AND parkour! Functionl training is far from "new" then, and in fact has its roots in our evolutionary fitness! Functional fitness means different things to different people, so let me know what you make of the subject down below.

    Build Your Dream Job Online
    The full post: www.thebioneer....
    This video details a blueprint that anyone can use to create their dream job online. The great thing about the web is that it gives you the reach and the flexibility to invent entirely new job descriptions, launch brands, and execute crazy plans.
    The strategy involves bootstrapping (doing basic work to give yourself the finances and flexibility to do other things), developing your skills (personal R&D), building a personal brand, and then 'springboarding' in order to use each success as momentum to take you even further.
    I'm away in Cumbria this week, so this is a quick 'vlog' style video. I'll be back next week though, and I've got some really cool stuff on the way to the channel...

    Thank you brother. Thoroughly enjoyed this...I've been training this way for a while now. My job at times is physically demanding...guys half my age (I'm 56 btw) observe and comment; they're amazed how well I move for my age and the duration. We're all made in God's image. Eat right,smart exercise routines with consistency and the rest will follow. I feel like a teenager.

      Same age as you Frank. Great shape here too. I’ve been working out since I was 19. I change heavy semi tires all day every day. I was in the blazing sun all day today by myself doing a set of eight. The young guys that work for me would have left in an ambulance, lol. And crossfitters play with tires without rims. Just don’t ever stop and we”ll be kicking ass for many days.

    I used to think the hip abductor machine was useless until I had my right hip replaced. For me, it is the best hip rehabilitation exercise I found. It has also saved my left hip from surgery.
    Love your work, l’ve been training in a similar way for over 40 years.

    Another great video Adam. Theres nothing wrong with the big three but as Ive gotten older they have less relevance to me and my goals. During lock down Ive been doing more research on advanced body weight exercises, kettlebells and clubells and at becoming more capable of moving weight through multiple planes of motion in one exercise. I really enjoy that style of training and when my gym reopens I dont see myself doing a powerlifting or body building style routine again. Not that I wont touch barbells and dumbells ever again, they are great tools, they simply wont be the back bone of my routine anymore.

      Thanks man! JC has some *really* interesting stuff to say about how moves like squats translate to real world performance (or don’t) which I’m sure I’ll be talk about soon! Like you say, there’s no need to throw them out - but treating them like some holy grail of human strength is mad: they’re competition lifts chosen for that reason!

    • @NaturalBornWinner-
      @NaturalBornWinner- 4 года назад +2

      @@TheBioneer Squats are very beneficial for health and longevity alone, but most people just do only regular back squats, i prefer to do thick bar zercher squats, and sandbag zercher squats, the reason being is because they are more functional to real world applications due to holding the load infront the body, plus the sheer bulkiness of the sandbag will humble people with a modest amount of weight. I agree that functional training is very beneficial for all round performance, plus it's fun to do! 0_0

    Being "The Fitness Guy" at my work I get asked stuff, so I had a co-worker ask me for a recommendation for a "good book on bodybuilding". I had to pause and think, then asked him "what are your goals?"
    When people are ignorant or misinformed they don't know what they actually want/need and ask questions that the answer won't lead them to the results they want.
    He wanted to lose fat and build muscle, which he tried doing before with no success.
    I had to explain the basics of "you can't out-train a poor diet" and progressive overload, then also recommended a couple body recomposition books.

    Thanks for sharing! JC has some great ideas. I didn’t know Georges (spelling), but I have so much respect for the French military approach to PT. If you look at the mobility and ability of indigenous people, it is astounding. No gym required. Nothing like a good obstacle course to humble meatheads. Looking forward to more videos.

  • @cezarionescu75
    @cezarionescu75 4 года назад +3

    I agree with most of the things you say, tho I highly recommend for someone to take "functional training" with a big grain of salt. A lot of what is promoted as functional fitness is some sporadic stuff that gets you a big ticket to snap city. My advice has always been focus on the big lifts (done corectly) and stabilization exercise for injury prevention (face pulls anyone?). As such you will have a strong foundation, from then on out you can look at diffrent disciplines that you consider to implement in your life, for instance parkour (start slow), martial arts, swimming etc. I agree with you that people should focus on skills not just general fitness, but skill based learning is more important than "functional training"

    • @TheBioneer
      @TheBioneer  4 года назад +6

      What JC is saying here is essentially that - practising the skill is the best way to get better at the skill. BUT if you choose the right moves in the gym you can add a little extra spice to those movements by strengthening the right muscles and patterns. IMO the big three aren’t enough - all stuck in one plane, all on two legs, all bilateral. As I said in another comment those lifts are chosen for a specific competition. How they ended up being treated like some holy trinity for strength I’ll never know. Good functional training shouldn’t mean snap city at all - squatting on wobble boards is not representative (just a few people on Instagram!). Good functional training should actually prehab you against injury!

    For me, functional training is what a firefighter or a builder has to do. And it all goes into traditional strong man training, with the 3 basics and the other 2 lifts (military press and hang clean).
    Functional training in the end is your ability to move weight from one side to the other with relative ease.

    the thing i find interesting is when i let my body react on its own, my reflexes are just amazing.
    i feel as if my body works alongside with me, i mean i just caught a fly with my bare hand without thinking about it. this one time i was sound asleep and there was a spider crawling on my leg, all of a sudden my hand just moves and crushes the spider in between my fingers. the weird thing was it was almost like i could see it. and i was spot on, when i saw its legs.

    Fair points about over-specialization, but I do think functional training has its own risks of being overly general and wasting time with piddly nonsense exercises that do very little for you. Note how Hebert, the better strength coaches, and most military PT sticks closely movements you *actually need to use in life* rather than fooling around with toys and oddball implements.
