    Take the strongest body builder and put them on a basketball court. Have them play intense defense for an hour or two. Ask them how their abductors and peroneus muscles feel the next day. Functional strength is the coordination through multiple joints which improves long-term resilience to injury to unpredictable stimuli. You get good at what you train for. If you don't train in weird planes of motion, you will be less resilient than you could be when you move in those planes. Not everyone's goal is purely strength. Maximizing absolute strength in bilateral movements is not the best strategy to improve injury resilience, but some strength is absolutely a component.

      I agree. Stronglifts people use strawman arguments by describing the worst, most silly exercises that usually are included in globo gyms aerobic classes and then call them "functional training".
      What I mean by "functional" is back squatting then supersetting it with Bulgarian bag lunge while the front leg is on a balance cushion.
      Single kettlebell squatting, holding it in the "rack" only on one side (core activation, balance) and then running stairs.
      That is functional. Not curling pink dumbells on a bosu.

That's functional training. No use being able to deadlift heavy weight when I can't bend over on one leg or stand up on one leg and support my own weight to let's say put on my pants and especially when I get older. I don't see his point either saying heavy deadlifts are functional unless you plan on lifting a car for someone so that they can change their tyre.😊

      Great question. I do feel like he underestimates how "stability" in muscle control is a large part of strength due to recruiting more muscle fibers and activating the nervous system more. I can see the limits in it, but more muscle recruitment and coordination ultimately can add a lot to your over all strength. Maybe there's a sweet spot involved

      I'm not an expert but I would say that if a person wants to pursue gymnastics as a sport, it's better to develop strength with barbells first. It's more efficient to progress in the bench press than it is to progress in bodyweight dips, and safer.

    • @Mahermovement
      @Mahermovement 4 года назад +3

      I would have to disagree, from my experience benching 315 and also doing ring dips and muscle ups, the bench press doesn’t teach you how to move your scapula through a bodyweight pressing motion, because it’s holding a retracted position, while also being pressed into a bench...where the dip and push up allows for free movement from elevation and retraction in the bottom position to depression and protraction at the top of the movement. My shoulders are far more flexible now with the gymnastics training than they were with barbell training, as they should be. I also think someone would be better off doing what you suggested just in the opposite order. Learn how to move your body with gymnastic/bodyweight movements before you start adding external loads. A lot of top powerlifters have sport experience as children/young adults which is what gives them an edge from others, on top of their good genetics of course...

Are you going to tell me that they can't increase their weight? that the range of motion is not complete? that the bilateral version works better stability? that the floor or a bar is too unstable and is a limiting factor ? In any case, I believe that the problem is not isolateral movement , it is the use of unstable surfaces and not increasing the weight.

    Interesting assessment. As a professional trainer I'd have to say you clearly have never ventured outside the world of the gym. Yes, to improval MAXIMAL strength the 5 "golden exercises"(bench press, bent over row, overhead press, squat and dead lift) are necessary. However, one can improve on each of these by changing the variables. I.E.. single leg dead lifts, single arm dumbell press, etc.
    Which naturally will even out muscular imbalance, improve mind -muscle connection, increases core activation, strengthens tendons and ligaments thus improving joint health, etc. No, these movements cannot be done with near as much weight, however they will improve your MAXIMAL lifts which as mentioned, are used to increase potential force generation and output.
    If you want a better idea about functional training, attend a JiuJitsu session and roll with a higher rank... I promise the force exertion in their grip, core, and back will be more than satisfying. Don't dismiss an entire training style because of your limited personal perspective and lack of education about the human 'organism'.

    Barbell Complexes are functional tho. Everything that works with barbell lifts for strength development to benefit GPP is going on but its muscular endurance, anaerobic endurance, and aerobic endurance (metabolic conditioning) focused more than Strength focused. There's General training and sports specific training. But to say Strength training is the only general training that one should do is WILLDD. When you are working all day being a lumberjack lifting over and over daily and youre not used to it. I bet what you feel like is more akin to complexes than pure strength barbell training. I believe most functional training is bull but the fundamental old school stuff, barbell/Dumbbell/kettlebell complexes thats undeniable. Obviously functional.

  • @curlean-x4443
    @curlean-x4443 4 года назад +1

    If functional means to improve function, then the movement pattern must be specific to the function that we want to improve. So unless your sport or discipline tests squatting with 8lbs dumbbells on a bosu ball, then it's not functional. Balance and coordination are not inherently functional. Neither is squatting or pressing if you are not competing in strengthlifting or powerlifting.
    Based on the simple definition of improving function in an organism, any physical activity is better than doing nothing. So technically, everything can be functional so nothing truly is functional.
    Mixing aspects of fitness (strength and endurance and power) will dilute adaptations from stimulus for each of these things, so it makes sense to focus on conditioning work and strength work separately. Athletes must "train" to develop these fitness attributes more in the off-season and then "practice" their sport (football, baseball, etc.) more leading up to and during the contest season.
    But you still have people who have nothing to show for all the "functional" work they do, claiming that mixing movements in and of itself has hidden training benefits.

    • @Cenot4ph

    When i define functional training here is what i mean.
    I worked a job where i needed to be able to lift bags of heavy large tents into the back of 6.1 ft high off the ground trucks.
    I needed to stabilize and quickly move without damaging long heavy pieces of metal frame for tents. I needed to lift and
    quickly move ground stakes made of steel. I needed to lift up and use a jackhammer to hammer them into the ground or
    use a sledge hammer to hammer them into the ground for tents. I needed to use a tool to pull up and remove those stakes
    or loosen them and remove them by hand.
    I needed to be able to stabilize a large tent from falling down by holding the corner up sometimes over my head. Using my whole body.
    I have to use very large metal poles like phone polls to stop a huge tent from falling down damaging the tent material when we need to use it again.
    I needed to be able to pickup and move quickly with stability 15 ft tables and 9 to 10 foot round tables, I needed to be able to use hand trucks or sometimes
    called Dollies to move 24 to 30 metal and plastic chairs over and over and over off a truck or on to a truck. To be able to move heavy metal plate platforms that
    connect together to form a small or large platform. Then we are now talking about endurance? How about working that way for 10 hours a day or more and trying
    to get proper sleep. Lifting awkwardly weighted boxes over my head on to a shelf?
    When i talk functional Training, that is what i mean. Heavy, Awkward, long duration, repetitive lasting effects performance. You wanted me to define that?
    THAT's WHAT I MEAN! Now go on tell me that regular weight lifting or bench presses lying down or sitting down and pulling down weight or even barbell dead lifts
    to the knees does ANYTHING to help with the awkward and often dangerous work that requires functional training as i defined it. YOU TELL ME! You can't.

    • @JackgarPrime
      @JackgarPrime 4 года назад

      My man, you're getting way too worked up here. Besides, it sounds like barbell lifts would translate just fine to your line of work. Deadlifts get you better at picking heavy objects up off the ground, while also strengthening your back to make it easier to carry things. Pressing makes your better at taking a weight and putting it over your head to get it on to those beds and shelves. Squats have a balance element to them while your body is under load, making you more stable. Oh, and power cleans are also really good for getting the weight from the ground up to shoulder level. Not to mention that having stronger muscles in general is highly beneficial to any occupation that involves lifting and carrying things, and the compound lifts hit just about every muscle group in the body when you put them all together.

He is a strength performance coach. Another goal of Mark's is to increase the bodies efficiency at lifting a weight and increasing the amount of weight lifted. My hat is off to him. As far as off season bodybuilding is concerned, he is not interested in this topic. Although steadily lifting a said weight will cause muscle hypertrophy, this is not one of his concerns but more of a side benefit. To gain muscle mass one must steadily gain strength but also one must either maintain or increase the number of repetitions performed, Performing higher repetitions but increasing the weight is the goal of hypertrophy this is not the main focus of Marks training. People need to understand this. You cannot compare his focus to a bodybuilders focus its ridiculous.
