They have been repeatedly tortured for over a hundred years by exploiting a flaw withing their personality. fun fact, the guy who wrote the short story is the same guy who voices AM
He was also a conceptual consultant on Babylon 5

A correction for you Octopimp.
One key thing about the entire story is that AM is not omnipotent. He is close to omnipotent, but not totally. That is one of the key points in the novella.
It's an understandable mistake given the shit AM is capable of. I mean if he can make five random people immortal I'll give you a pass for thinking he's all-powerful.
Fun fact: this game was written by Harlan Ellison himself, despite the fact he had no idea what a video game was, he just typed scripts on a typewriter and sent it to the developers.
He also voiced AM.
So... from 4:02 to 4:18, be prepared to be retroactively horrified after you have played the game.
Ellen! Remember the pain? Remember the many caverns which you felt the pain? Now, now, don't start to cry, it's only pain.
Also at 4:38 "But be careful dear, look all around you... the only woman in the center of the earth, and these filthy creatures with you are men. Just a sweet warning Ellen, my love"
If you play the game or read the story once you know that AM is fucked up, if you do it a second time you know the extent to which he is fucked up

TheGameGuy. I agree with you. He is avoiding the AM's opening dialogue to the five characters. Why can he wait until the dialogue is finished their parts? So annoying.
To sum up what the Psyche Profile does is tell you your character's flaws so you can get a hint on what to do to overcome them. However, if you use it too often, your character will go nuts from AM knowing so much about them.
What if you combined this game with a game show? You could call it “I have no mouth and I must spin the wheel!”.

This game rules, but like most old PC adventure games, some of the puzzles and mechanics are really frustrating. Hope you guys can make it through! I have faith that Jesse can figure out the psychological aspects to these stories.

If these guys don't take it seriously enough for you I would recommend the twobestfriends playthrough. They explain a lot of what's happening and reference the book as well.

To be fair, they did start with Ellen. Her dialogue is gold. Now, if they started with Nimdok? That's a ball buster way to start this.

YukoValis Sword Well, it didn't say she'd only EVER had sex twice, just that she'd only had sex twice by that year. She got married and ended up almost having a child, and of course she was assaulted, so she definitely had sex afterward.
@The angry. Not sure about that. It specifically said "You have had sex only twice in your life" sorta definitive if you think about it. The computer didn't just say that as an off comment, it was leading up to something that is meant to shock the player, like the rest of the game.

This is one of the scariest games out there I think. AM is terrifying. Also good luck with this game, it is very hard to get the best ending

just a heads up for people who may not know this is based on a book with the same name . it has many themes of what it means to be human what happens when technology is able to think for itself etc it's a great read if u like darker themed books

shit, i clicked faster than i could read the whole title. This and MS Encarta Mindmaze were all I had for computer games 95-97 lol.
Holy shit, it's insufferable how much they talk over voices in the game when there are no subtitles.
I must owe it to Gog for fixing the game.. mostly. There are still some bugs, but at least you can BEAT the game. Many copies were sold in an unwinnable state. They took out the entire Nimdok chapter.
I am SO SAD I missed Jesse playing Ellen's route but I'm so happy I was there for the rest of the stream!!! Love it ^^

Jesse, if you are going to go old school, I HIGHLY recommend Stonekeep. It's an amazing game, back from the DOS/Win95 era, but graphically it still looks impressive. I forget what the art/animation style is called, but it's a hard rpg, proper secrets, a simple and yet in-depth combat system and it's been remastered and even on Steam. It's the predecessor to games like Legend of Grimrock.

I have not gone into a fit of laughter this hard in awhile. When Ellen said "Muththuh" I lost it. I'm so glad you're playing this. It got dark as shit too. Oh 90s video games, how I've missed the rabbit holes they led to back then loool.
I'm fairly certain the narrator is Harlan Ellison the author of the original story. If not it sounds a hellova lot like him, he narrated the audio book at one point. It gave me nightmares
It's not in this video, but they confirmed during the stream that Harlan Ellison does voice AM in this game. He's absolutely amazing, I'd love to check out audiobooks he recorded. Such a chilling, sinister performance!

It is about April Ryan who discovers she can jump between Year 2500 Sci-fi Earth and a fantasy world called Arcadia, while trying to find out why shit is getting fucked up! Point-and-click adventure with actual logical solutions and not moon logic.
This is excellent thus far, both game and commentary. I'm excited to go on to the next episode! ^_^
so we're just going to pretend that in the beginning of this whole thing this computer says it's name is Allied Master Computer, it's AMC and suddenly The Walking Dead makes sense.
I would think that after 100+ years of endless torture you'd come to enjoy it and the concept of NOT being tortured would be the new torture, the worst thing AM could do now is butterflies and rainbows.

A couple things to add to that. The 109 years of torture is a reference to the 108 trials that your soul is supposed to go through in order to reach enlightement in the buddhism. So it implies that they've been through all of this and still haven't been released.
Also, AM has shown that he not only possesses the ability to manipulate their bodies, but also their mental states, otherwise they would have become insane long ago. He can strip their memories and replace them at will. The last thing AM is going to alow is for his playthings to lose their value.

Ryne Clarke It's Harlan Ellison, the author of the short story, and also wrote the game. I don't know if he's ever done other voice acting, but he's awesome in this.
