  • The time came again to go for my dental hygienist appointment which also means that I have more dentist dramas in relation to my teeth, ongoing gum disease, receding gums and more. As I was feeling slightly under the weather, I tried to cancel my appointment which was unsuccessful as they said that they would charge me, I didn't want to pay the fee so I just went and had an awful time.
It was shocking to know that ulcers can be a sign of disease but also more shocking that they jumped to conclusions invoking fear. Long story short - because my teeth are really bad and gums are progressively getting worse, I now have to go for a teeth clean every 3 months which to be honest is my idea of hell. I hope you found part two of my dental journey helpful, over the next six months, I will provide an update.

I was just looking that up about appointments for cleanings and if your infection was bad you do have to have them cleaned every 3 months to keep it from getting worse again. Sometimes the dental infection never goes away so it needs to be done but get a second opinion

The gum disease is recurring and will continue come back if I do not have regular cleanings. The dentist tried to get me to come every 3 months but I prefer to go every 6 months, a lot of people have great results from coconut pulling so I might try that!

Good luck but I think you need to listen to your dentist they all say every 3 mo.

@@ryanbomzerI have it too. Family history of gum disease. You have to go every three months and ask your dentist to refer you to a Perio. I got referred on NHS but crazy thing is that they tell me my first appointment will be by phone.

I've heard a lot of great things about oil pulling and it sounds amazing but how does it work? Does it get rid of the built up tartar? ❤️

It’s all about stopping it. You can do it. And oil pulling does help.

Hi, I've also had some problems with receding gums, and read a lot about it, and maybe I can share some insights here.
Brushing technique is maybe the most important. I took me a year to develop a technique where I can remove most of the plaque. It is really hard to do it properly. It is about finding the correct angle (how you move the brush is also important), so that the areas near the gums are cleaned, but it also needs to be gentle. Some people have thick gums, others have them very thin. Thin gums can recede due to overbrushing, or brushing too hard. (And I've asked many dentists and hygenists about the correct technique, and none worked perfectly. I had to experiment and find one on my own). (And this is not as easy as buying an electric tooth brush and pressing it bristles straight on teeth and gums, this doesn't work for me. There is a lot of nuance to how I brush, all accumulated with experience and experimenting a lot).
I have a condition where I feel pain in my gums if they are inflammed. This is very useful in guiding me how to brush. If I do not brush perfectly, I feel pain. This is the main reason why I got interested in all of this. Not the gums that are receding, but the pain that is hard to bear.
Medium brushes can hurt gums. Soft ones clean no worse and are more gentle. I can clean my teeth with both manual and electric brush (I use an ending with soft bristles). I suggest experimenting with both.
Speed of the electric brush does not matter. The simplest electric brush is enough. Really. Don't fall for marketing.
So, you need to maximize the removing of plaque, while minimizing the damage done to gums by brushing.
Mouthwashes seem quite useless. They reduce bacteria in your mouth, and hence plaque builds up slower, but this doesn't matter if you are brushing correctly once or twice per day. It is enough to remove all the plaque once per day.
Interdental brushes are terrible (and useless if you already use floss). I use floss. Once per day. Flossing technique is important and also comes with experience. It is not easy to floss gently. When your floss snaps, or when you press with it too hard on gums while going underneath them, you may hurt them.
If I do not floss for two days, then on the next flossing I will get some blood from it. So it is needed. Even if you brush perfectly, you still need to floss if you care for removing all of the inflammation.
Nearly all people have some gum inflammation. Some conditions can make it worse. Like diabetes. Drinking tea does not make it worse, haha. Gums that do not bleed during brushing can still be inflammed or in bad condition.
Dental cleanings. If you brush perfectly, if your gums are not inflammed, then you don't need them, I suppose. I do once per year together with a dental check-up, for the peace of mind.
And dentistry is not a science. They can solve easy discrete problems. Like a rotten tooth. But for more complex problems they have little clue. What should be the frequency of the dental cleanings? They don't know. There is no research. And there are so many variables. Here I have some trust issues.
To sum up, I would revisit the brushing technique. Teeth must be smooth when touched with a tongue, especially in places where they meet gums. If they are smooth, this means no plauqe, and this usually means no inflammation. No inflammation, together with gentle brushing, gives slower rate of gum recession.
Oh. And I've read that one can have receding gums due to incorrect occlusion. Or when you grind your teeth at night. But this is due to mechanical stress, and not the hygiene. So more frequent dental cleanings won't help here.
And if you do not remove all the plaque, then you will get the inflammation in two days. You go for a dental cleaning. But if you do not brush correctly, then your gums are back inflammated in just two days. One should first pin down the brushing technique, because it is the most important factor here.
And there are many more reasons for gum recession. Can be due to hormones. Inflammation due to plaque, and not brushing gently, are the most common reasons.
And lastly, gum recession is pretty normal. Just a part of life. You can have recession but still have healthy gums and teeth. Then this is not a health issue, but rather the esthetic one, if you care.

I also have gum diseases. I saw comment on RUclips that said that zinc, vitamine c, vitamine D and rinse with salt water could help. I don't know if it's true. Maybe you can look into it.

the thing about mouth ulcers is you get mouth ulcers usually when you have ulcers in your stomach but always it could also mean that you are weak or that you have vitamin b12 deficiency but the most common is stomach problems.

You are 100% correct, I didn’t know it but I had H-Pylori in my gut which was causing some nasty symptoms including acid reflux and ulcers - I took antibiotics but the success rate varies so I may need to test again.

Thank you for sharing - it must have been caused by a build up of acid from the fast food, and sorry to find out about that 😟

Can you give an update? Do you plan to do a gum graft for your receding teeth since she mentioned it? Has she mentioned it again? Has your teeth gotten better?

It looks like it is turning into periodontal disease. Look up LANAP and have that a go.

@@ryanbomzerAlso interdental brushes would help a lot. I am using them now. I just found out that I have Periodontal disease after a lifetime of bleeding gums. I have had a couple of sessions with a hygienist. I will be seeing a Periodontist soon and am planning to get this gum treatment using this laser system called LANAP. This system not only removes the disease causing bacteria under the gum line but also helps in the regeneration of bone and gums. It’s going to be expensive but I am determined to find a way to afford it as I have gum and bone loss.
Very few periodontists use LANAP in New Zealand. Found one and I am very happy about that. The fact that bone and gums can be regenerated through laser treatment has given me a lot of hope.
