  • In this video we take a pair of tired looking Rock Shox SID XC Dual Air mountain bike forks, Strip, Repair, Sand, Re-Finish, Service & Put it all back together again.
We show the process involved for servicing maintenance and how to transform them back to top condition.
They have become very tired & dirty over the years, So now it is time to breath new life back in to them.
We will be replacing the original damaged decals and doing a full colour change.
This particular set will be used on the project GT STS bicycle, Which is also being shown on the channel.
Keep posted for how we carry out all of the refurbs on the bike components.
The Rockshox SID series was introduced from 1998 and was produced to provide reliable lightweight forks for mountain bike riding.
They were at the high end of the fork market, But had various versions of hierachy within.
Rockshoz is one of the best known manufacturers for cycling and has a reputation for making quality products. In the 1990's they were considered king of the hill by most.

This video was very helpful for me. My SID is for a Bontrager Privateer, so it has a specific shorter offset/rake in order to achieve the handling characteristics that Bontrager wanted. I just completed a full service on mine, except for removal of the cartridges in the upper tubes, which require either a special tool (SID Cartridge Retainer Tool Part No. 140-001905-00) or a substitute. I have seen a 15mm flanged nut suggested as a possibility. Some other things that helped me:
1.) The retainer nuts on the bottom of the exterior of the fork install with 8mm crush washers. These are supposed to be one-time use items, so it's good to have extras on hand, but they are cheap and available. I think this prevents leakage from the bottom tubes.
2.) I found it helpful to pressurize the upper tubes slightly before installing the retainer nuts at the bottom. This helped push the air piston and the damper cartridge piston out through the holes in the lower leg a little farther so it was easier to thread on the retainer nuts.
3.) Be careful with the damper cartridge piston, as the adjuster at the end is delicate. My adjuster knob won't screw back in all the way with the tiny screw. It's possible I tweaked it during service.
4.) If you do decide to remove the cartridges from the upper tubes, be aware that they are reverse threaded!

I have been researching these lately, and the mention of 100ml of oil is for the "Hydra-air" model SID. That was the "SID XC" and was a slightly heavier as it had a coil spring for negative pressure and a small oil bath. The model in the video is a "SID SL" (Dual Air). The difference is the use of a negative air spring (air valve in the bottom) and thus not having the need for the extra oil bath for the spring.

There was definitely conflicting information online for this 1999 model SID. The SID in the video is suppose to be an 'XC' model and was badged up this way from new.

Really helpful video! I've just stripped down the SID XC long travel version for a 1999 GT Zaskar LE.
Where did you get the decals and shock adapter? I have a SID shock pump but unfortunately the O-ring has disintegrated...

    • @retfurb

Thank you, I am glad it helps. I was thinking of getting longer travel for the STS, But I ended getting these. To be honest they should be ok for what it will be used for.
Both of them were from ebay. The link for the decals is www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134527539723 .
For some reason I cant find the pump adaptor, But there are some others on there still.

Hi! nice work, thanks for share it 😉
I have the same fork: same model and same color. I don´t like the red version and I want to paint it "blue" too, but I searched all over the Web and I can't find the color code. Which paint did you used? (all the information is useful; brand, color name, color code, pantone, anything).
    Thanks!

Thank you for the kind comments, It really is appreciated.
I will have to double check with paint supplier, As the tin doesn't say a lot on it.
All the information on the tin says:
      Car: Pantone
      Code: 300C
      Color: Blau
So it pretty vague. I will contact them on monday and ask.
