According to the sram service manual that came with my 2001 judy c: Right leg Judy c/xc 130cc oil Judy sl/race 120cc oil Left leg All models 30cc oil I can send you a picture if you'd like.
Just remember that these Judy forks dont have rebound adjustment, so the only way of variyng its rebound is using different oil viscocity. Thats why is so important to use 5W, 10W or 15W depend on your needs. Adding 10-15cc more oil, change the perfomance as well, it make it harder to bottoming I still has this fork on my 98´s Scott Endorphin and it runs flawlesly since then. Great video, regards.
Thanks RJ, just serviced my Judy shocks thanks to this video, and I’m all set. ‘99 GT XCR is still kicking! These seem to be one of the lower maintenance Judy XCs from the late nineties. Great videos!
You should have soaked the little foam rings (that are just under the rubber seals in the lowers) in the suspension fluid. These foam rings are actually made to hold oil inside themselves and effectively lube the stanchions while the laters are moving up and down past the foam rings.
Thanks for the video. Just got a K2 Attack 1.0 with Rock Shox Judy -- it's been under a house for a couple years. Your video was just enough introduction to tackle the cleanup. Thanks for mentioning using 110ml of 5W shock oil.
Awesome video. Saving it for later. I have a 2001 Judy Race fork and it's NEVER been serviced. It's getting serviced later this year when I get home though.
This is a great form thx for the video rj. I was able to install new old stock SiD lowers and the fork looks and rides new. I also repaired the upper stanchions with super glue two years going strong.
I followed your tute and rebuilt my judy xc forks yesterday. Man what a difference, stoked! One of my foam seals was blown to bits so I packed the cavity with butter grease. Works like a charm. Cheers again mate.
I bought my TREK 6500 new in '99 (I think) just now serviced the forks for the first time, they weren't bad, the bike got limited use but now they are spanky. thanks.
Great video man. I've been looking for a straightforward mechanic's explanation of how to rebuild the Judy forks on my two Santa Cruz Gen 1 Hecklers and you nailed it. Thanks.
I just found your video. I have 1995 judy rock shox. I am planning on getting it fixed and the dust off of it and go riding again. Since I cant afford another motorcycle yet.
Hey this video and the "Repairing Seized SR Suntour T890 Forks" were great help for me! I've got an old Judy DH, rusted and frozen. I'll try to follow similar steps to clean it! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for posting this video. I just bought three older used bikes to work for $100 a day ago, and the one has a judy xc hydracoil on it. Could not have been better timing.
Just did an amazing rebuild of Rock Shox Judy with blown air cartridges.....I took two trampoline springs with OD of 22mm, stretched them out using my electric winch, they became the perfect compression spring about 9 inches long after I ground ends flat. I cut off the ends of the air cartridges for my screw down spring retaining top nuts. I used a pvc 3/4 male pipe x 1/2 tubing barb, for my lower spring end guide....greased it all up and put it in....works great....cost NOTHING. LOVE BACK YARD ENGINEERING!!
Ive got a Judy ""Long travel"" , tad diff than this one..( got it all cleaned up n Back tgether, VERY nasty n NO Foam rings! Thanks for another great video RJ. From reading, my understanding is that '97 and earlier year Judy XC's used elastomer blocks and not springs. These elastomers were prone to extreme deterioration but can be purchased as aftermarket replacements. I think it was '98 and '99 XC's that had springs and no elastomers so you must have one of these years. I have those later model XC's (I think, I have never opened them) on an old bike and am wondering if I should service them as per your excellent video. My thoughts are that since the forks work fine and there are no oil leaks then the philosophy that applies is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", especially since spare parts are difficult and/or expensive to get. On the other hand, service as you described will ensure fresh oil and a general cleaning but I would be worried about accidental damage to non-replaceable parts such as the rubber boots.
Rock Shox recommends regular service on them. I have never damaged parts doing service. If parts were damaged, they were already damaged. It may extend the of the fork with fresh oil grease. Use proper suspension grease like Slickoleum.
It usually means if it was an elastomer fork that the MCU elastomers have degraded to bits. Also the fork might be low on oil if there was any -- more oil also keeps them from bottoming out since it means more compression.
pre-hydracoil Judy's used plastic cartridge in the bottom that can be removed with a clip at the bottom, usually they will need to have the o-rings replaced and oil re-added.
Hi! I noticed you used Grease on the Lowers and Oil on the stanchions. Won't the oil just mix with grease? Wouldn't Oil just dislodge the grease? Or isn't Oil With Grease a bit redundant? (Newb DIY here btw, haha.)
yup, for these forks that use an open oil sump it's pointless, but other forks use damping cartridges, or no oil and my guess is that the manafucturers don't want to confuse their customers/ mechanics and tell them to put grease just everywhere :)
+Slippingsnake I don't think the manufacturer mentions anything about grease in the manual. And on a side note; the oil quantity is 130cc on the right and 30cc on the left in the Judy Race at least.
RJ, solid videos thanks for the step-by-step tutorials. 👍 what would you think about using a hi temp anti seize lube for the inside. Or Permatex Super Lube PTFE based.
Mine are Judy Race and have a rebound adjuster pin that you can turn to adjust at the bottom of the forks. I'm not really sure if this is working at all, as it is possible to remove the pin (rebound adjuster pin completely). Should you be able to remove this without doing any harm to the fork? A bit late now if it isn't okay, reackon it's been taken out and put back again a few times. Oh!! great video by the way. thanks for your post. :)
Is the disassembly the same as in this video, just with 1 bolt not 2? The performance on my Judy SL 2001 is... "shocking" 😛 I just don't want to spend £30 on the grease and oil to find I can't even take the fork apart.
I have to service my Rock Shox Psylo XC soon. If you read the service manual (freely available on the web search for: 04 Psylo/Duke U-Turn Service - Birota - Yumpu) it seems that you put 30cc of oil in to the bottom of the left leg and later 140cc in to the top of the right leg. Somehow this does not sound correct. What do you think.
Rj my knowledgeable man!!!!! Have pair Rock shox and just started to take the right side off the lockout cap off. Had to undo the very small hex screw, tiny off and nearly undone the black plastic bolt an cant see a hole to lock an unlock, there locked out but limited on tools. Thought there would be a hole for a Alan key to turn on and off but there's not one. I thought the cap an tool on the cap was broken but there's no hole for an Alan key
I noticed that the yellow spring was in the right hand tube when you pulled It apart, but you put it back in the left tube. Why is it coloured if it doesn't matter? Thanks
Great video! My Rock Shox have never had maintenance. They have started bottoming out. Do I need to replace parts, or will this maintenance take care of the problem (maybe all the oil is gone)? thanks!

ok, your springs show two[maybe] connected with shrinkwrap or similar, and the 99 manual shows this in the judy 100.....I have a "blue" XC long travel, haven't taken it apart yet, I need it to be a regular 63mm for a 1996 geometry stumpjumper so the manual shows a single spring and a spacer for the c [63mm] and xc [80 mm] can I assume the spacer length determines the actual travel? thanks
i got this Fork on my Bike and looking for the right service kit to find it in shops or the internet but i can´t. I live in Germany. Would you show me a way to buy it please! Thank you
Hi RJ - great video thank you. Do you know if the black adjustment knob comes free from the grey cap at all? Both sides on mine have a small o-ring that has torn out from under the black knob and I can't seem to separate them to be able to replace it. When I turn the forks upside down the oil leaks out and I think it might be from these missing o-rings?
Any specs on changing oil in an old Judy XL with dampening cartridge? Have some belray oil to use and was wondering about oil volume in the fork leggs. In the past, long away past, I had emptied the cartridge and "primed it up" before intalling the cartridge. Oil volume is what I'm looking for. Thanks. Might even have a little Judy butter left, if anyone remembers what that is. The lowers seem to be about the same size, but the cartridge will displce the oil in one leg, bit it goes in and out of the cartridge while it cycles.... maybe?. Last revamp if it can be pulled off. Want to save it. Thanks for any help! seems like fork oil leaked out after years of storage.
RJ, have you ever serviced a Judy that has hard plastic rings braced in a metal sleeve instead of foam seals? I redid my Judy XC long travel (hydracoil) and there were no foam seals. I was also unable to remove the rubber wipers, but thankfully nothing seemed to be in bad shape to i just cleaned, greased, and added oil before re-assembly.
I use Rock Shox Judy XC (but silver tubes) and i have to do some sevice. I also need new Springs. I need Black springs, but which one? Is so much different springs and i don´t know which one I need. I hope you can help me.
Hi there great self help video. I have an old mtb with old RS fork with cantilever brakes and want to upgrade the fork but none of the major fork makers(SRAM/RS, FOX, Marzocchi) makes one with cantilever brake posts so I decided to make/modify one instead. Ebay still sells new old lowers with cantilever posts so I would like to ask will a new RS SID upper stanchion fit into old RS SID lowers? So is the upper stanchion outer diameter and lowers inner diameter the same? I am thinking of getting a used newer RS SID and fit it to a new old lowers. Do you think this is doable? Another question is the new RS SID travels 100mm whereas the old(cira late 1990s) SID travels 80mm so if I were to go ahead with my plan would it work? Any suggestion is appreciated. Thanks.
I have a 97 Judy SL. I took it apart a few weeks ago, and when I was trying to put the adjustment knob back into the bottom, it would stop to far from the screw to be able to push it in enough for the seal to clip in. We figured out we lost some parts, but when trying to fix it this week, we found it and put it back in. It didn't fix our problem. the adjustment pin still would hit the cartridge to early, and not clip in. we decided to ignore the pin, and put in some oil, but when we put 110 cc into it, it overflowed. we dont think it went in because when compressing the shock the level of the oil stays the same. we dont know where to put the oil in, and how to put the pin in. The shock is still flat when filled with oil.
I could have, but there was nothing wrong with them. This was just a basic service. You don't need to replace all the parts. Especially since the manufacturer recommends this service every 100 hours of riding.
Hi, I think you have the "Judy C" version just kike me. I was servicing an old GT and noticed the same situation, only one spring in the left plunger, the right one came with some wavy washers and a nylon white ring on top but no attached spring. I don't know if this is the way its supposed to be or if someone has overhauled it before and messed up the internals. I can't find any information about it.
My 2001 Judy SL only has 1 bolt on the bottom of the left leg. The right leg has a plastic dial for rebound damping. Has anyone taken this specific fork apart? Does it only have one bolt at the bottom?
RJ question for you I'm rebuilding my RockShox J1 and the PDF from Sram says 20 cc's of fluid just in the right side Fork, is that correct are the Judy's different from the J1?
Since I don’t like the looks of the boots, I’ll be leaving those off, and just keep the bars clean with a rag and some WD40 every so often or after a heavy ride. Great vid for servicing the old Judys, thanks!
Never use wd40 to clean those, it removes the grease from dust seals. Wd 40 is a solvant, use the correct suspension Oil or cleaning alkohol that vaporise before it goes down to the seals.
T OK WD40 did an amazing job marketing that product to be used for EVERYTHING. So many people like this guy use it for all the wrong reasons 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
I've got an older set of those that came on a used MTB that I bought and they pretty much bottom out, do you know if what you did in this video might fix the problem or will I need to do something more in order to fix them? Thanx!
Maybe smith41978 needs stronger springs, there's several different colors/combinations depending on your weight. Any idea if springs from other Rock Shox lines are interchangeable with Judy?
Do you know what the white plastic pieces are called that are connected to the springs? I need to order a set if they're still being sold. Thanks for any information!!!

lol, same - I can't wait to service it now that I've found this video. it's gonna have to survive another ride or two, first, though.
Same for me. I have not ridden mine in twenty plus years. I have all the tools. But not the bike stand.

I dont recommend re-using them as this is known to cause some problems. Just replace them, they are really cheap

I was also unable to remove the rubber wipers, but thankfully nothing seemed to be in bad shape to i just cleaned, greased, and added oil before re-assembly.
There are bunch of different Judys. And variations.
Hi.... I have the same judy fork, and i cant find a service kit. What service kit works for this fork ?
On my rock shox judy race it calls for 130cc on right side and 30 cc on left. But i remove old oil it was the same amount approximately 120cc
thanks for the video man
This is excellent - thanks.
I use Rock Shox Judy XC (but silver tubes) and i have to do some sevice. I also need new Springs. I need Black springs, but which one? Is so much different springs and i don´t know which one I need. I hope you can help me.
Hi mine are compressed as soon as you get on the bike. Do you have any idea what's wrong? Very low miles on bike. I
Hi there great self help video.
I have an old mtb with old RS fork with cantilever brakes
and want to upgrade the fork but none of the major fork makers(SRAM/RS, FOX,
Marzocchi) makes one with cantilever brake posts so I decided to make/modify
one instead. Ebay still sells new old lowers with cantilever posts so I would
like to ask will a new RS SID upper stanchion fit into old RS SID lowers? So is
the upper stanchion outer diameter and lowers inner diameter the same? I am
thinking of getting a used newer RS SID and fit it to a new old lowers. Do you
think this is doable?
Another question is the new RS SID travels 100mm whereas the
old(cira late 1990s) SID travels 80mm so if I were to go ahead with my plan
would it work?
Any suggestion is appreciated. Thanks.
No idea. Changing to a shock with more travel may change the geometry of the bike.
I haven't done a Judy SL. I don't know how it differs from the XC.
@@RJTheBikeGuy Ok, thanks. And one question not specific to the sl, on some older shocks, does the oil go in the cartriges?
@@cyrusthegreat3553 Not all of them even used oil. Instructions vary.
@@RJTheBikeGuy ok thanks
are this racing tires or hybrid mountain bike tires?
Thanks! Very helpful!
Good video. Why didn’t you replace the seals?
I could have, but there was nothing wrong with them. This was just a basic service. You don't need to replace all the parts. Especially since the manufacturer recommends this service every 100 hours of riding.
I noticed that you have both springs on your plunger. I only have 1 on the left side. Does it affect hugely on the performance?
Hi,
I think you have the "Judy C" version just kike me.
Did you ever figure this out? I am in the middle of this and can't figure out if it's the same amount and why it would be different!
So many people like this guy use it for all the wrong reasons 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
nice video and nice shorts!
+Alessandro P Cool socks!! ;)
sorry socks..
I've got an older set of those that came on a used MTB that I bought and they pretty much bottom out, do you know if what you did in this video might fix the problem or will I need to do something more in order to fix them?
Thanx!
Nope. If they bottom out, it sounds like the springs or elastomers are toast. You might be able to find replacements.
Maybe smith41978 needs stronger springs, there's several different colors/combinations depending on your weight. Any idea if springs from other Rock Shox lines are interchangeable with Judy?
can you use 5w30 instead of 5w oil?
Do you know what the white plastic pieces are called that are connected to the springs? I need to order a set if they're still being sold. Thanks for any information!!!
+Kenyon Daniel I don't know what they are called off hand. But I doubt you will be able to find parts for these old shocks.
Socks in the garage?
Sure.
